DRAMA @ THE GLOBES: ISAIAH V.S GREY’S ANATOMY
Wednesday, January 17, 2007

The cast of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ may have left as winners on Monday night, but that didn’t stop them and star Isaiah Washington from being the center of drama the day afterwards:
In the Globes press room on Monday, Washington tried to set the record straight in regards to reports in October of an on-set incident that resulted from the alleged use of a homophobic slur toward co-star T.R. Knight.
After a reporter questioned the validity of the on-set incident, Washington denied his involvement saying, “No, I did not call T.R. a faggot. Never happened, never happened.” VIEW VIDEO OF PRESS ROOM INTERVIEW
So what’s the big deal right? Well, his answer left the cast as well as alot of fans thinking he is an a-hole:
In response to Washington’s use of the slur when addressing the situation last night, [costar Katherine] Heigl spoke out.
“I’m going to be really honest right now, he needs to just not speak in public. Period. I’m sorry, that did not need to be said, I’m not okay with it,” Katherine told Shaun.
Does he sound like an a-hole to you?:
After making his comments in the press room, Washington came straight to Access Hollywood’s Billy Bush and Nancy O’Dell to explain.
“There is no way I could do anything so vile, and so horrible, not only to a castmate, but to a fellow human being,” he insisted…
Washington also said that he and co-star Patrick Dempsey have moved beyond the October incident.
“I kiss Patrick Dempsey. We sing ‘Ebony and Ivory’ everyday since the so-called incident and it hasn’t come up. We purposely sing ‘Ebony and Ivory’ every night since October 9 and nobody has written about it,” he added.
Can’t we all just get along?

I don’t think that it’s a “black thing”(the whites having something against him), yes, it happened months ago, but ‘where there’s smoke, there’s always fire’. He should really just keep his mouth shut, cause seems to me everytime he opens it, there’s trouble. I’m always ‘team black’ and have been supporting Isaiah, but now I’m starting to wonder. You can’t have everybody pointing a finger at you and not question wether the problem is, or does really lie with you.
Anyway. It feels good to be back on CL after such a long time.

He’s an asshole because he supposedly said it yet he’s still an asshole for supposedly saying he did not say it. The ‘Ebony and Ivory’ thing was pure sarcasm. Come on now, folks!
I get the feeling he is just as big an asshole off set as he is on. I can’t stand his character on ‘Grey’s’.
He needs to sit down somewhere and stop talking about this nonsense. It will ruin his career.

Well I would like to say the use of the word “faggot” was VERY unnecessary. As I am a gay person myself, I totally understand why its offensive. Of all words to say, he says “faggot”? I love Isiah but there’s more to this story no one is talking about I think which is why Katherine spoke out the way she did. Think about it…she must have been PRETTY pissed to say what she said in PUBLIC and of all places, the Golden Globes PRESS ROOM. She even said “I know I’ll probably get in trouble for saying this but oh well…”. She was a little unprofessional about it but a person can only take so much which is why I think other stuff may be brewing. I dont think we’ve heard the last of this and why is the race card being played? I think if Isiah werent Black, she would have still fealt the same way. Hurtful words are hurtful words period and it shouldnt take a gay person only to realize that

I hate to say it but, I never understood why we as black people are so willing to use a slur towards gay people and sweep it under the rug yet, let somebody say nigger and all hell breaks loose. Respect is a two way street.

I have to say that he must be a little off. If someone accused you of saying something that is obviously offensive and you were asked about it why would you repeat the offensive word out loud while answering the question. What kind of sense does that make?? It doesn’t go well with your case that you don’t use that type of language.
Basically he poured more salt in the wound when he decided to repeat the slur.
As for #23, I’m one of the few people that doesn’t watch Grey’s Anatomy but if Morris Chestnut was on the show I’d be a faithful viewer. Maybe we should start a petition…………

I have to agree with #14. There has to be more to the story than what Isaiah’s telling us if another costar is so upset by his comments that she is willing to put him on blast, to the PRESS, a few feet away at the SAME event (homegirl wasn’t scared).
And the way Isaiah’s handling this, I’m more inclined to believe that he’s not telling the “truth”.

T.R. Knight says hearing Isaiah Washington call him a “faggot” on the set of Grey’s Anatomy gave him the courage to come out of the closet – and that he’s speechless that Washington on Monday denied using the word.
In an interview with Ellen DeGeneres set to air Wednesday, Knight says something changed inside him when he overheard an argument in October between Washington and Grey’s co-star Patrick Dempsey during which Washington used the slur.
“It’s an awesome word, isn’t it?” the 33-year-old actor tells DeGeneres sarcastically. “I’ve never been called that to my face. So I think when that happened, something shifted, and it became bigger than myself.”
Shortly after the dustup, Knight confirmed exclusively to PEOPLE that he is gay – something he says wasn’t his style, but that he felt was necessary.
“I was under no delusions,” he says. “My friends on the set knew. We talked about it. Publicly it’s not my thing to call up PEOPLE magazine and be like, ‘Hey, you want to know something about me?’ … I could’ve just let it slide and not said anything, but it became important. It became important to make the statement.”
In the Golden Globe press room on Monday night, Washington denied using the slur. “No, I did not call T.R. a faggot,” he told Access Hollywood. “Never happened, never happened.”
That statement drew a sharp rebuke from another Grey’s co-star, Katherine Heigl, who said Washington “needs to just not speak in public.” And Knight tells DeGeneres he doesn’t know what to make of the denial.
“I don’t know what to say, really, about that,” he says.
Knight also thanks DeGeneres for having the courage to come out as a lesbian 10 years ago. “It just made all the difference in the world,” he says.

there was supposedly an argument that everyone on the set heard - it wasn’t a private conversation.
The bigger issue still is that Isiah acknowledged that he made comment in October, but now he is denying it.
This is a news article quote:
In October, it came to light that “Grey’s Anatomy” star Isaiah Washington had allegedly called co-star T.R. Knight a “little faggot” on the set. Washington soon released a statement saying he regretted his “unfortunate use of words” and had “nothing but respect for my co-workers.”

See that’s the problem. Forget about good writing or directing or hard work, I’m gonna win because it’s a black holiday.
Oh, and as for Isiah, he needs to learn tact and humility. I mean, how would he feel if they guy came up to the mic and said:

This is NOT a Black-White issue.
He is a professional and he is on the #1 show on ABC, the #1 show in the 18 to 49 Demo, and the show is fighting CSI weekly for the #1 Drama on television in the ratings.
He get’s paid handsomely for being on this show, a show that if I may add, wears it’s diversity very proudly on it’s sleeve. A show that is the brainchild of an African American woman who is being paid brillianly for her efforts. A show that features 3 African American actors playing the 3 most PROMINENT AND HIGH RANKING people in the hospital (Dr. Burke is the Head Cardio Thorasic Surgeon in the country, Dr. Bailey is the Head of the Surgical Intern Program, and the Chief of the whole damn hospital is Black.)
So with all of this, why is he acting a damn fool? Why couldn’t he give a more dignified answer? Why did he have to rehash the incident by using the word again? And why the hell is he lying? TR Knight is going to appear on Ellen and when Ellen asked him what happened, he tells the truth, Washington called him a faggot.
It’s not about not being able to let go because he is Black. It’s about him not being a damn professional. Why would you give ANY ONE ammo against you when you are in a position like he is? Grey’s will be scrutinized because like I said above, it’s the #1 show. People want to hear about in-fighting.
I’m sure Washington realizes how hard it is for an African American actor to get a good role on TV. WHY is he fucking it up? I’m sure there are plenty of other out of work Black actors who would kill to play his role and would do it with no backstage drama.
I know I’m in the minority here with this issue. I just hate how people pull out the race card when they know damn well the dude is wrong. I don’t care what people do or say in their lives because it doesn’t affect me personally, but I find it annoying when people who are in a really good position act a damn fool. Don’t act like a fucking stereotype of the “Angry Black Man” and don’t ruin all of Shondra Rhimes hard work. It’s bad enough she set the bar high with the quality of her show. She has to weekly be consistent, and doesn’t need this bullshit, or a shakeup that would require extensive re-writes and work arounds.
Screw it. They should just make Burke’s character come out of the closet as Gay male.
59.

He should just say no comment. He knows he said it and needs to stop lying. I’m pretty sure everyone on the set is uncomfortable with him. Clearly Katherine Heigl is not over it and neither is Knight. He should just apologize and probably in public. A gay person being called a faggot carries just as much hate to them as a black person being called a nigger. Washington should relaize that…
Nontheless I still love the show despite all of their off set drama!!! And I love his character and would hate to see him get kicked off because of pride or whatever. Own up to you mistakes and get over it.

I’ve never seen 1 episode, so I personally don’t care. However, on this, I’m going to play devil’s advocate. It sounds to me like they’ve wanted him out for some time. This is just their prime excuse to get rid of him. That whole “he’s hard to work with” routine. You knew he was hard to work with from the get go. Stop pretending here. Also, he should stop fielding these questions. It’s a set up. They put a microphone in front of him, as soon as he answers the question, they run and yell he’s talking about it. No, it’s called an interview. What Isaiah should do is announce before someone hands a mic in his face that he’s not going to talk about the T.R. situation and that it’s water under the bridge. Watch them all back away. That’s what you do, take their power away so they don’t have any levirage over you. But that’s just my take here. What do you guys think?

We’ve got a long way to go, folks. There is alot of anger and bitterness w/in. Very often, the anger is not w/the proverbial “White man,” but it’s familial.
Way too many black women don’t speak to black men. Way too many black men walk around w/scowls on there faces. This behavior is a prescription for negativity.
I have loving family members who go to church on every Sunday, and sometimes more, yet, they’ll curse somebody at the drop of a hat.
We’ve got to go w/in self, and find that joy about life. We are only on this earth for a moment. There are times anger will come, but it shouldn’t be on one’s sleeve, as a action or reaction, to all.
