ISAIAH WASHINGTON GETS HELP FOR SAYING ‘FAGGOT’
Thursday, January 25, 2007
Isaiah Washington, who does the healing as a doctor on “Grey’s Anatomy,” is the patient now. He’s in therapy for his use of an anti-gay slur against a castmate.
“With the support of my family and friends, I have begun counseling. I regard this as a necessary step toward understanding why I did what I did and making sure it never happens again,” Washington said in a statement Wednesday. “I appreciate the fact that I have been given this opportunity and I remain committed to transforming my negative actions into positive results, personally and professionally.”
Washington took a break from filming Tuesday to meet with gay rights activists and offer help in educating the public about the cruelty of such words, an offer the activists called sincere. Whether Washington was receiving outpatient counseling or had entered a facility was not specified, and the statement did not indicate whether he would miss work on the show…
Series creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes issued her own statement, at once criticizing Washington for his use of the word “faggot” about co-star T.R. Knight and lauding Washington’s decision to seek help.
“I speak for all the executive producers here at ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ when I say that Isaiah Washington’s use of such a disturbing word was a shocking and dismaying event that insulted not only gays and lesbians everywhere, but anyone who has ever struggled for respect in a world that is not always accepting of difference,” Rhimes said. I don’t think there’s anyone on here who hasn’t called someone out of their name but the difference is that he’s in a business where if you even sneeze wrong someone’s going to have something to say. We don’t have to worry about reporters waiting outside our houses or going through our trash cans to see what they can find. We’re not in the public eye so when we do something like that it’s not going to be posted in every newspaper, on every news station and all over the internet. It’s still wrong either way but when we do it it’s not going to be publicized all over the world. He made the decision to become an actor and now he has to play the game if he wants to stay in the game.

I’m sorry but the “F Word” does not carry the discriminatory history of any racial slur against African-Americans. The “N Word” alone could be argued as the basic explanation of slavery, racism, discrimination, and injustice against African-Americans.
I believe slurs against gays are hurtful, yes, but it’s does not carry the same weight. Sexuality can be easily concealed while your racial attributes are quite a bit more difficult to hide.
I do feel bad for Isaiah. I think the folks at “Grey’s Anatomy” are playing him to get more press for the show. Isaiah could have handled this whole situation a lot better but the same could be said for the “powers that be” on the show and the network as well.
I can’t help but think that if Isaiah was a blond-haired, blue-eyed “Adonis”; then this situation would not be as controversial. Opportunities for his career are closing because he said “faggot” against a straight man with whom he was arguing. Eminem says “Hate Fags, the answer’s yes!” and I wonder how many doors were closed for him after that? Maybe a top selling sophomore album???!!!
I believe that black people are being unfairly labeled as homophobic by gay white people. I don’t think we are exactly comfortable with open gay sexuality, we just believe in discretion. I know for a fact that racism exists in the gay community and I think some gay whites are trying to use an “expected homophobia” as an excuse to be racist against black people. Therefore, a prejudice is being freely exercised and it’s doing nothing for the progress of neither party.
Back to the whole incident, I know if I pissed somebody off enough, the “N word” would probably come out of his or her mouth no matter what the intention is. I could probably expect the word Faggot as well, no matter what my sexuality is. When people fight, hurtful words are exchanged. Period.
What makes more sense to me is that Isaiah was not too friendly with his cast from day one. Maybe that is how he prefers to do his work. I don’t make it my priority to make sure that all of my co-workers like me, and I know when any friction came up, I was unfairly blamed. Sometimes, when you are the one of the few black persons in the room; non-blacks want you to entertain them to put their racial angst at ease. Just be the “sassy sista” or the “crazy black guy” and everything will be fine.
Some of our greatest artists were not the friendliest people in the world. So an argument happens and now the whole world is supposed to end?
Isaiah firing his publicist and going into counseling shows that he knows his career is in trouble and desperately wants to save it.
Isaiah deserves a “PR slap on the wrist” but he should NOT lose his job. Let the man go on his “apology tour” coming to a city near you so that we all can move on.

Yo, everybody, read all of Sloane’s remarks on this post, especially #150.
Read it b/c I think this is my point and Judah’s point EXACTLY….gay people are obviously the violent, angry ones and if you don’t jump right on board with them, THEY are the ones who start with the unnecessary language and hatred.
Yo Sloane, believe it or not, you and all the ones like you will get dealt with soon enough! I know you don’t believe it and I know you’ll reply with your usual remarks about your “struggles” as a black lesbian and call me all kinds of names, but it’ll be okay. I’ll just sit back and wait for YOUR day to come!! And when that day comes, please remember…Quiche-A!!
Hey Judah, I got your back!
Peace.

Yeah i’m trippin at all that cussin intermingled with verse from the Bible too… wow.
Umm this Washington guy acts like a “jerk” on the show and seems to be one offscreen as well… screw him and the horse he rode in on…
As for people being gay, its the new “in” thing to do…if you folks would shut up about it and stop giving it so much attention they will see how stupid it looks to go around presenting their sexual orientation to everyone (as if anyone cares) and let it go…
When will we ever get back to being moral and actually begin caring about the images we project again?
Teen pregnancy is not cute. Not being mature enough to provide proper guidance because nobody has guided you properly and honestly because you are too young to handle the responsibility responsibly is SAD not cute.
The gay fad isnt cute. Swinging aint cute, bisexuality aint cute it all screams CONFUSION to me.
People not taking pride in their communities isnt cute. We get upset when people move out behind us moving in and swear that they’re wrong…they arent. I would move out too if you moved in with disruptive children, loud music, too much traffic, trash in the yard, not keeping your landscape up, etc. Disrespectful children arent cute. I dont care who they belong to if they disrespect me Im spanking! And if they think that they are to old to be spanked, and want to be grown then I am not beyond fighting a kid like his/her ass is grown. And if my kids disrespect you then you had better BEAT THAT ASS TOO.
Men not working, not taking care of their children and not marrying the women they knock up isnt cute. Our men think that dropping seeds all over is manly but to me it makes men look terribly gay when they would rather spend more time running around with their boys than settle down and marry a woman. Men need to stop being scared of the responsibilities associated with marriage and help strenthen our race and culture.
And all of these things are interrelated whether we would like to believe it or not.
Agree or disagree thats how I see it all.

@134 Louise
Sis, I like your comments but you’re attempting to mix your personal philosophy in with the Lord’s Word. You’re trying to make Sloane feel comfortable living her lifestyle when she is not comfortable accepting other people’s views. The Most High said to hate the evil and love the good. Hate is a part of life. Anyone who says that they have no hate is a liar and the truth is not in them. It’s not an emotional hate, it’s just hate in propriety with the understanding that the evil will spread if you just sit back and let it. Sis, don’t come with that only God can judge nonsense either because that’s not scriptural. The white man (mis)judges blacks, hispanics, and the entire world for that matter and no one bats an eyelash.
@135
Brother please, you gave a link to some white people co-signing Michael Richards’s rant and then you bitched up and said that black people have to stop being racist, lol. You’re emblematic of all these weak black men that can’t analyze anything worth a damn and don’t have anything to offer their community. If you don’t know the Bible then be quiet about it.
@140
That was good, very informative, lol. You should write a book because your philosophy could cure the world. I think that all you utopians need a place that you can go and exchange “ideas” and philosophy while real life goes on. You all will probably start killing each other within the first month.
@149, 150
You mean I was so funny that you were laughing your ass off for the 20 minutes between the 2 weak posts you made, lol. I must be entertaining, or irrefutable, one or the other. I love how you homosexual wannabe intellectuals try to worm your way out of a lightweight debate that you know you’ll lose by trying to invalidate the Bible. So typical. No response on the “Igbo”, lol?
Bring what on sis? You’re not gonna fight me, you’re trying to fight against Christ and the Most High. You have alot of unfocused anger in you and you need to come to terms with that. Do you see how asinine you look challenging someone over the internet to “come find you”, lmao. I can’t believe that you’re so enlightened but I pulled your card like that. You speak on open-mindedness and ignorance but all you’ve done is name-call and threaten people that disagree with you, lol. You’re not one of those lesbian chics that hate black men are you? What were you planning to do, pelt me with your D batteries? You and the dyke squad were gonna pistol-whip me with your dildos? I love the homosexual movement because it’s a sign that Christ is on his way back. I honestly could care less who you’re licking or who’s licking you but you seem to want to force your way in. I don’t think that you understand the ramifications of your mentality. The white man has put such a battery in your back (pun intended) that you think that you can’t be stopped, lol. Sis, I don’t hide anywhere because there’s nothing to hide from. You’re really taking that “homophobic” phrase seriously huh? You people really think that regular people “fear” you, lol. Damn degenerate.

how dare ppl try and compare being black to being gay. that is a disgrace and shows how stupid ppl are becoming. you are born your colour and anyone who does bad to based on your colour is wrong. but if your told being gay is wrong accept it because its true. there is no such thing as discrimination to something that is plain wrong. its like someone saying “you killer” and saying that they are discriminating against murderers. its stupid because being a murderer is plain wrong same as being gay, a thief, being an adulterer, being a liar etc.
its a shame that society are getting brainwashed into thinkoing its ok to be gay. its nasty and nothing thats right NOTHING can prove its natural.

JUDAH, I feel sorry for the day you cross over from the living only to see the shit you preach was dead wrong.
By then it’ll be too late and you will beg your maker for mercy from all the evil ways you’ve preached.
You are no different from Jim Jones or David Koresh- a poor but evil misguided soul, attempting to draw in more like you.
You are no different from Samuel Jackson’s character on pulp fiction either- obsessive bible quoting/assasin/filthy mouth black man.

You claim I have a utopian mentality while yours is one of a realist? A realist would understand that gays have existed before Christ hence their mention in the Bible, which means Sloane is correct that while man walks the Earth, they (gays) are here to stay! That dosen’t mean that everyone should go out and try it, but it’s the truth. So perhaps your perception is the one that is more utopian rather than realistic.
I hope and pray that upon Christ’s return, you’d have thrown out enough stones from your bags to make him choose you over Sloane to ride to heaven with him. If not you’ll be one pissed off individual, lol.

#169 WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT! IF YOUR GONNA USE THE BIBLE TO PROVE A POINT USE IT CORRECTLY. THE BIBLE SAYS PLAIN AND SIMPLY THAT “BEING GAY IS AN ABOMINATION TO GOD.” AND WHEN JESUS COMES THEM GAYS ARE GONNA GET PUNISHED AS WILL ALL SINNERS. YOU NEED TO GO TO A REAL CHURCH WHERE THEY PREACH THE WORD AND TELL YOU THE REAL TRUTH. YOU HAVE BEEN DECIEVED.

I don’t hate gays or lesbians, but the fact of the matter is that lifestyle is a CHOICE, not really supported by any religion that I know of, a bad sign for this behavior. But this behavior unfortunately will become more mainstream as people look for more ways to screw-up.

Chantelle, my dear…SLOW DOWN. I know what the Bible says about homosexuality, and my church is the real deal. Thanks for the concern. My conversation wasn’t about what is/isn’t sin. I was pointing out that homo’s have neen around since the Bible was written (otherwise they wouldn’t have been mentioned, right?) and they are STILL here, and will continue to be here until man’s last days on Earth. What about that was to complicated for you to comprehend?
“AND WHEN JESUS COMES THEM GAYS ARE GONNA GET PUNISHED AS WILL ALL SINNERS.”
My point exactly. It’s so easy to cast judgement on another person you don’t know because he/she identifies with being gay on the internet. By doing so , YOU ARE SINNING, and the Bible states that no sin is greater than the next, so I was trying to get people to see that while they are condeming this individual to the firey pits of hell, they are standing in the same line and awaiting their turn, so what’s the point???

Let’s sum it up and get in with our lives:
T.R or whatever his name is, is gay. Big deal.
Isaiah acts like an ass, who dosen’t? Eminem has said it before, and besides the GLAAD people, didn’t make a big deal out of it, and he didn’t go to conseling. But why make a big deal out of this? He said it, he said he’s sorry, and he’s getting help. Let’s move on.
There! This whole situation is dead and buried.

Not a problem. The only reason I get upset when hearing people discuss gay people isn’t because I disagree with reference to them in the Bible, but more so the hatred that comes out of (Christian) peoples mouths to prove a point. It’s obvious that straight people don’t understand their lifestyle but there isn’t a need to come off so bigoted and insulting while at the same time portraying yourself to be morally superior…that’s being hypocritical. Then you have people portraying them as a menace to society and hateful when things don’t go their way, but the funny thing is any demographic will do the same if their issues aren’t heard or seen as valid, so which is worse? The arguments don’t make sense, and really it isn’t our place to speculate what happens to anyone.
