Those are nice. I think I might go see it…of course I hope it’s not like You Got Served. The story for You Got Served was dumb as shit but the dancing was hot. I hope this has a better story to it.
That’s not Tamera Mowry in that picture. That looks more like Tia…

Neyo- He knows Paula is really Paul
Evan “WTF” Ross- Being born with money seems to be more of a curse than a gift!! Look at that boy, yall tell me he is not gay AND interrupted
Tia or Tamera(I never got them strait)-Yeah, I am just suprised she is marrying a black dude…I wonder what their brother SMART GUY Taj Mowery is up to…he was a cutie and showed lots of acting potential
Megan-I was just watching an episode of House that she was on.I am happy that she is a black woman getting parts, but I think her acting SUCK and she is already type casted as the love interest in all of these black movies. I don’t know….she irritates me. And she is from my neck of the woods, almost right up the street from me, but I just can’t get into her
Everyone else is great =)

Yeah dats tia ….I can tell cause I used to watch sister sister religiously so i can see the difference. About the movie….well from the previews i have to say i’m dissapointed. I know its supposed to be about steppin but can we have education represented aswell?
It reminds me of College Hill and Drumline….both those shows/movies took place at a HBC yet neither of them showed education as an important part of college. I’m tired of seeing college students dealing with everything BUT education, I know my black people value education! I guess I will have to see for myself if this movie is like the others.

Gabrielle, you never cease to amaze me with your beauty and classiness.
That girl with Neyo has a damn big head, it’s like it somebody else’s head that was just stuck into her body.
Essence reminds me of an old episode of Half & Half that I watched last weeke when I saw Michelle from Destiny’s Child act for the first time. She was not bad, but not good either, just average.
Darren and Angie can make a nice couple. I miss seeing him on Soul Food series, he was very good. Do you guys know if there is gonna be another one?
That Kenya is damn sexy.

Dymediva, I’m confused by Your comments…
Dymediva25, Your an AKA, right ?????
I read on a Blog (greekchat.com) that the Alpha’s & AKA are boycotting this Film !!!
Maybe you were not aware of this fact…
In particular, I read That Alpha Phi Alpha doesn’t support the Movie, because the producers of the Movie are showing Images of Alpha, that hasn’t been approved by Alpha Phi Alpha Incorparated, and that Alpha Phi Alpha does not want to support a movie that shows images of Black Men being involved in Drug Dealing & Shootings..
So that being said, why should any member of the Divine 9, the National Pan-Hellenic Council, Support THIS movie ??????
I hope my Fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi Incorparated, isn’t represented in this movie…..
This Movie looks really corny anyway…

Until someone does, here’s information on a scholarship program.
The Call Me MISTER program is an effort to address the critical shortage of African American male teachers particularly among South Carolina’s lowest performing schools.
Call Me MISTER Participating Colleges
The Call Me MISTER program combines the special strengths and resources of Clemson University with the individualized instructional programs offered by four historically black colleges in South Carolina: Benedict College, Claflin University, Morris College and South Carolina State University. To provide even greater opportunity and access, students have the option of first attending one of our two-year partner colleges before transferring to one of the four-year institutions to complete their baccalaureate degree. In addition, the project has limited enrollment in the middle school Master of Art in Teaching program.

For many years we as greeks have been attempting to educate many people about our purpose and when we as a people decide to make a movie on greeks its about dancing. Man come on…I would rather sit home and watch something else and save my money and donate it to the community cause that’s what Greeks do!

Bill I must say that I am a little bit disappointed in your comments. You comments are reasonable and I am a very open minded person. The majority of the creators/directors of the movie are black male greeks. This movie is done in a positive image. I too have heard that there are some greeks who are not supporting the movie. A movie trailer is to attract an audience. Almost every young person I know attends or have attended a step show. Much creativity. You work at a school. Give a step show and see how many people will come out. That’s why the movie trailer is advertising that way. I feel that your greek brothers and sisters are judging a book by its cover. Do you find it ironic that this movie is opening in about 22,000 movie theaters and Dreamgirls only opened in about 800? Or, is your answer going to be that they are degrading blacks? I am not currently enrolled in a HBU so I can’t speak first hand about what goes on there. Not because I have something against black but UH have an awesome business college. University of Houston is a highly diverse school. Also, I am not greek and I do not plan to pledge. (My niece is an AKA and her husband is a Kappa)- NO HATE AGAINST GREEKS.

I understand Bill. I thank you for being a man and responding in a positive manner. Maybe you can help me understand why some greeks feel upset about this movie.
But from my understanding greeks teach brotherhood or sisterhoood. From the trailer, the young man got into trouble at home, went to college, joined a frat and got some respect for himself & the people around him. How could you not support this movie? Well, it opens MLK weekend. The majority of black movies that open MLK weekend have done an outstanding job in the box office. Excuese me if they did bot show the community service projects that greeks do. But it’s not like that at every campus. I have realized that their is a age difference between you and I. I’m 20 years old. You age has allowed you to experience things I have not done. Form opinions on topics that I have not researched yet. From the outside looking in I feel that the movie is done in a positive image that will attract young audiences. Maybe influence some to attend college and pledge. -If that happens it is you duty as a greek (positive role model?) to show them that pledging is not the only perk to college. Teach them: Education, the arts, wealth, and the family. How would one know if they are not taught?

Cher…
Let me see if I can help. I am 24, finished undergrad and back finishing my Masters, so we aren’t too far apart. It just that with Greek life our purposes are to uplift society, yes educate young men and women and to support our community. What our purpose is not is to dance. We step as a way to for one raise money, so that we can give back to the community. Yeah it is fun at times, but to me this movie, depicts Greek life as just dancing. Yeah he did come from violence and now joined a frat, and whatever the case may be but after this movie comes out tell me how much it showed our community service and leadership. Yeah all Greeks wear different colors but we have the same purpose.
When it comes to why I am not supporting the movie, because it simply depicts us as just dancers well steppers it should be, but we aren’t, and little ones who’s parents take them to see this movie, thinking its just another “You got served” are the ones who want to join our organizations not for the right reasons, but for the colors or to do the shows. Yeah we are educating them about what greeks may do but not our purpose and that is the main reason why I choose not to see the movie.

No comment on the Fraternity/Sorority issue. I didn’t attend a 4 year university, so it’s neither here nor there for me.
However, on the outside looking in, again folx, directors will continue to make movies that will sell. It is very disheartening that the arean for BLACK movies always casts US in drug dealing, sex, and otehr degrading storylines but until there is a change, this is all we will see.
There are continous focus groups that are apparently ruling that these depictions of US is what’s selling. It’s sad, but true.
(Putting soap box in the closet)…Anyway, my 14 year old wants to go see it, so I guess he’ll be pulling me to take him!
Everyone looks nice! Yea, that Angie’s got the MOJO but when I met Darren in person, he is very short. Dang! I don’t think Angie’s his cup of tea. Perhaps they were just posing for the pic!
Also, why does Essence and Kenya show up solo all the time? Both are gorgeous! Just wondering…..

Cher, I hope this answers your Question.
The following is a Legal Letter from Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated to the Producers of Stomp the Yard.
“FYI…
Rain Forest productions, Sony Pictures et’al re: Stomp the Yard
To Whom It May Concern:
This communication is to inform the Brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. of a legal matter pertaining to the unauthorized use of the fraternity’s many trademarks. The unauthorized use is within the film, “Stomp the Yard”, which loosely depicts Black fraternal greek life.
Please know that Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. does not endorse the film “Stomp the Yard.” The Fraternity prefers not to be associated with a movie that juxtaposes gang activity with that of Black greek life. The Fraternity, through its general counsel, made a direct request to the film’s producers to not include any trademarks of the Fraternity in their film. The producers disappointedly ignored that request and included the Fraternity’s trademarks in the film without permission.
Their actions are illegal and will be addressed through the proper legal channels. The Fraternity has requested that Sony pictures and Rainforest productions cease and desist from distribution of this movie due to the unauthorized use of Alpha’s trademarks.
The Fraternity owns a family of trademarks that include Federal registration numbers 2227381, 2218329, 2770575, 2481901, 2178342, 1459737, 1459736 and 1459735. The Fraternity has at least ten additional applications for registration currently pending before the United States Patent and Trademark office. Also note, the majority of these trademarks have been in use since as early as 1906, the year of the founding of the Fraternity. And, all of these marks are rigorously protected by the Fraternity.
Although, it is unfortunate that the Fraternity has to divert its attention away from our strategic focus areas of providing service to and advocacy for our communities and to this matter during this its centennial year, we will vigorously protect the legacy and future of this great fraternity. And, we respectfully request your assistance in doing so by not contributing to the illegal acts of the producers of this film by paying money to view it or by promoting it. If you have any questions, please contact at counsel@apa1906.net”
So Cher, As I stated earlier, since my Greek Brothers, the First & Oldest Black Fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha Incorparated does not support “Stomp the Yard, then I as a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Incorparated, will stand behind our Divine 9 Brothers, Alpha Phi Alpha Incorparated.
I hope this answers your question
Respectfully,
Your Brother

Now…In Order to be FAIR to the producers of STOMP THE YARD, let me print their responce to Alpha Phi Alpha’s Legal Letter…
To: Darryl R. Matthews, Sr. - General President
From: Rob Hardy - Executive Producer, Stomp the Yard
Brother Matthews:
What a wonderful Centennial year it has been for our fraternity! Yet as we celebrate this great milestone, I am deeply saddened after reading your November 30th correspondence to the members of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc, regarding our motion picture.
Stomp the Yard presented us with an opportunity to do something that no film has ever attempted on this level: feature Black Greek Letter Organizations in the most positive of lights, as pillars of economic stability, community service and brother and sisterhood within the community. It is difficult to make ANY movie in Hollywood. You can only imagine how difficult it was to make a film about a young African-American male who finds hope, redemption and becomes a better person through his experiences with a fictitious black fraternity at a Historically Black Institution of Higher Learning. These are not ‘commercial’ themes by Hollywood standards. These are, however, positive ones that should be embraced and promoted by the African-American community, especially those fortunate enough to understand the benefits of higher education and fraternity life.
At no point does our film “juxtapose gang activity and Black Greek life”. What this film does is illustrate how lives can be enhanced by the experience of college life. It is troubling to me that at a time when we as a people face the reality of inexplicable police slayings in New York, vile racist rants in LA and many other social, economic and political issues around the country that you would choose this movie as a cause to unify and call to action the fraternity’s membership (as well as that of other Black Greek letter organizations). The fact that you’ve taken this stance without responding to my repeated attempts at contact and without having seen the film first is disconcerting. In fact, you were one of the first people I attempted to contact when we finally were given the green light to make Stomp the Yard. Yet those attempts to reach you went unanswered. After sending materials and conversing with your Executive Director, an in-person meeting was finally set for us to discuss Alpha’s support for the movie. Neither you nor your executive Director showed up at the meeting or had the courtesy to provide an explanation or reschedule. The first correspondence I received from you was the “call to action” you sent to the entire brotherhood.
Our goal for this film is simply to make college life seem accessible to all. In a society where the value and relevance of Black Colleges/Universities, and Black Greek letter organizations are under increased attack, the mainstream circulation of the types of images in our film can renew interest among our youth.
One of the most encouraging things I overheard someone say after an advance screening of Stomp The Yard was the fact that “they thought it was just a dance movie” but after seeing it, it underscored the fact that they shed “they could’ve pursued higher education, and that every young black kid should see this movie.”
At Rainforest, we share your vision of protecting the legacy and promoting the future of our great fraternity. Stomp the Yard is a part of that vision. We ave done nothing illegal. Everything we have done was within our legal rights as filmmakers. We did not disparage or tarnish the images or logos of ours or any other organization. The inclusion of real life members of Greek Letter organizations was a genuine attempt to highlight these great organizations to a generation that questions the relevancy of their very existence. It’s unfortunate that Alpha feels the need to urge other Alphas to not support a film made by Alphas. I wish that we’d had the opportunity to sit down and settle this matter as Brothers instead of having your lawyers attack myself, my partner, my company and my film.
I am a proud 13-year brother of Alpha who has given much of my adult life to upholding the aims of the fraternity. You and I have had a personal relationship for over ten years. Our first film Chocolate City (which also featured fraternity members) was screened, per your invitation, at the 1995 Alpha Phi Alpha General Convention when you were the Executive Director. Based on your appreciation for our work you personally employed our company Rainforest Films, to create the Official video for the fraternity the following year. While President of my college Chapter(Beta Nu, Florida A&M University), we were selected as the Outstanding College Chapter of the Year (1996) for all of Alpha, an award we earned with your support. Further, my producing partner (and line brother) Will Packer was District “College Brother of the Year” in 1996. As recently as last month Will and I were selected to receive the Metro Atlanta Centennial Award of Excellence as part of the Alpha Centennial celebration in Atlanta. We have spent the last 10 years of our lives upholding the light in an extremely difficult and challenging industry. Alpha prepared us for many of the obstacles that we have had to overcome in our path. We would never, ever do anything to tarnish the good name of our beloved fraternity.
Film is one of the most powerful mediums in contemporary society. It allows us to capture the attention of various generations of viewers at a single moment in time. What better way to introduce and educate others about the benefits of higher education than a film such as this. Although we may differ in our methods for reaching our youth, I hope that you will at some point take the opportunity to see the film and the spirit in which it was made, before passing additional negative judgment. As we work to move beyond this issue I look forward to a day when we can galvanize the collective brotherhood, with a call to action that will help push a social, economic or political agenda to better our entire community. I will be the first person to help spread that message and lead the charge.
Fraternally Yours,
Rob Hardy

I personally didn’t plan to see the movie, it looked like yet another Drumline to me. However, as a proud member of the Divine 9 i definitely won’t see it now. I mean if a movie was disrespecting my organization I would want other greeks to support my org in whatever efforts we took because at the end of the day we are one under Pan Hell. There is so much more to greek life than stepping, I personally don’t step or stroll because I didn’t join for that reason so to see it mininized to that concerns me.

RECENT RESPONSE FROM APHIA (ALSO PUBLISHED IN JET MAG LAST WEEK)
December 20, 2006
To Whom It May Concern:
Previously, I disseminated a written notice of the Fraternity’s objection to references to the Fraternity in the film “Stomp the Yard.” The Fraternity made its concerns known to Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., Screen Gems, Inc. and Rainforest Pictures. After several weeks of meaningful and productive discussions with the executive leadership of Sony and Screen Gems, the film has been revised to the satisfaction of the Fraternity. Sony and Screen Gems have also agreed to make a donation to the MLK Memorial Foundation.
The Fraternity raised its objections to the Film without regard to financial remuneration, but to protect its history and its legacy. The removal of all references, in the film, to the Fraternity is based in part on the fraternity’s leadership insisting that we observe our written policies and internal protocols’ regarding the commercial use of our symbols and marks.
Sony’s decision to make a donation to the Washington DC MLK, Jr. Memorial Foundation Project, Inc., is very much appreciated, and helps to secure, in history, the legacy of our brother, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and helps to celebrate his selfless contributions to the fabric of America and the world. The construction of this memorial on the national mall is the only one dedicated to an African-American.

I have fully read both letters…the letter from Alpha Phi Alpha’s General President and the response from Rob Hardy.
I attended an HBCU, however was not able to pledge, but fully respect Black Greeks and all they do.
The reasons of the boycott seem to be because the Exec. Producer didnt have the “go-ahead”. I understand that, but in no way have i heard or read that this film is depicting Greeks in the WRONG sense. It seems that you all are saying that its just not the ONLY thing that comes along with being Greek. The movie isnt out yet, so how do we know that it won’t focus on the numerous amounts of fundraising, community services, tutoring, seminars, etc. that Black Greek Sororities and Fraternities do. Has your General President seen an early viewing of this movie, and totall disagrees with it? Or its just that he is not willing to give it a chance. I thought that being Greek was apart of community awareness, supporting one another…and thats what we as Blacks should be doing AT ALL TIMES especially if its in a positive light. Doesnt matter if you’re Greek or not…and it doesnt matter if the movie is about Greeks or not. I respect the fact that you’re respecting your Brothers, but I think that you should support this Black film and make judgement for yourself after you see the movie. Its bad enough that we have to make sure that our movie ticket says the movie that we paid for, because of the scams against Black films making money, but know we have to have whole organizations boycott our own movies????
Please help me understand that.

I agree being a member of these orgs is just not stepping and partying. But dont act like when the chance to do those things come around you aint doing them. Alot of people in here with letters didnt join because of the community service alone. It was either the parties were the bomb, their steps were tight, they had alot of sorors/frats on campus, your parents are one, or a combination of some of those things. I specifically talking to undergraduates.
I loved to step because through that time of practicing our bond got stronger. And it was time to see who was the best on yard. Zetas on my campus were positive women and that is what attracted me to find out more about the organization. They did their Adopt a Highway and March of Dimes. That said, I must say, it is a movie. Hollyweird, will always show college as being a pit-stop for partying and slacking. I have NEVER seen ANY FRATERNITY/SORORITY portrayed in a positive light. Be it ”Animal House” ”Revenge of The Nerds”, ”How High”, ”Porky’s” (the list goes on and on) it’s always the same. But what I think is interesting is that in this country, how far you go in life is determined (in most cases) on who you align with. And it always has to be with a group/club/secret society. Skulls, Masons, Fraternities, Sororities, either way it’s a bit disturbing. But if these organizations want to help their fellow man, how come we never hear about what they are doing? Not to disrespect, because I’m not, I am simply asking a question. Where are they? Too many of our youth are just drifting uneducated and unmotivated. Help me understand…

103# I agree. All the interviews that I have seen and articles that I have read, the cast is giving big props to the Divine 9. There even greeks from the campus of FAMU stepping in the movie. I think it is the Deltas and Alphas if Im not mistaken. This movie is a positive movie. I think alot of the misconception of the movie comes from the dancing in the trailers, but that is just in the beginning of the movie laying down the foundation from where main character comes from. I say see the movie first and then decide what you think. Im actually excited.

My Fraternity is a member of a Larger organization called the National Pan-Hellenic Council (the Divine 9).
The National Pan-Hellenic Council is composed of nine international black Greek-letter sororities and fraternities and promotes interaction through forums, meetings, and other mediums for the exchange of information, and engages in cooperative programming and initiatives through various activities and functions.
When One of Our member organizations expresses that they have taken “issue” with a situation, then the OTHER member organization usually follow suit.
Alpha Phi Alpha (through it’s President, Mr.Matthews) had INITIALLY taken exceptions to this movie.
I have SINCE read Postings by other Alpha Brothers and I have found out since the Movie’s producers REVISED the movie and has REMOVED all negative images of Alpha Phi Alpha Incorparated, and the fact that the movies producers has decided to make a donatation to the MLK Memorial, That Mr. Matthews has REVERSED his decision.

Oops, first part of my post got cut off: first half of my post: I have visited family and friends at Howard, Spelman, Morris Brown and Morehouse. There was a united front with all black students and faculty from what I witnessed. I went to all white college and university (Lehman College and Pace University here in NYC). Of course, these were also the years that “School Daze” and “Different World” ruled the media waves. Within the past yearsI think that most people joined these organizations just for “appearance” purposes. I have seen people who pledged and know full well they were not up to par with what they were representing. As far as I can see, when the “Greekfest” turned to “Freaknic” Black organizations were over…

The movie isnt out yet,…Has your General President seen an early viewing of this movie, and totall disagrees with it? Or its just that he is not willing to give it a chance. I thought that being Greek was apart of community awareness, supporting one another…and thats what we as Blacks should be doing AT ALL TIMES especially if its in a positive light. Doesnt matter if you’re Greek or not…and it doesnt matter if the movie is about Greeks or not. I respect the fact that you’re respecting your Brothers, but I think that you should support this Black film and make judgement for yourself after you see the movie…
THANK YOU KATRINA AND GOVERNESS! I COULD HAVE NOT SAID IT BETTER! LETS FACE REALITY. NO DISRESPECT TO ANYONE.

SOMEWHAT OF A SYNOPSIS:
There is dancing in the movie because in the beginning the dude and his brother (chris brown) are battle street dancers in CA. Chris Brown is killed in an altercation where the main character is involved. Per his probation he opts to go to a HBCU named Truth University besides going to jail. He observes the frats “stomping the yard”. He supposed to a be somewhat of a journey for this young man.

Greek life is fun and yes @ #107 of course before u are actually a memeber of your organization u are attracted to the hype of it for one reason or another. I was just simply stating that it is not just about steppin’, colors, chants and all that. Dedication, respect and service should be at the forefront of it all.

With much respect to you and what you believe in as an INDIVIDUAL person not a person part of an organization…..
just because Im not a Greek doesnt meen that my point of view is invalid. There are SEVERAL GREEKS that share my point of view.
this is just the point of view for you as an INDIVIDUAL, i mean, afterall, thats what you are right? right….
So I totally repsect you following the rules and guidelines of the Divine 9 and your fellow fraternity, however that doesnt mean that you would be doing something so DISLOYAL to your fraternity if you saw a movie that YOU as an INDIVIDUAL found interesting??? Would it? I mean, does that mean you would be stripped of your rights as a GREEK memeber….since im a NON-GREEK and all you can see why i dont understand what would happen if you paid you’re money to support a Black film.
Believe you me, Im not trying to argue, im just debating your own personal reasons as to not see the movie. It seems as if all you’re telling me is that I wouldnt understand because Im not a Greek.
And so now you’re telling us that Mr. Matthews has retracted his position on the movie and is saying that you all should go out and support the movie now?

Sometimes, Our Various Frats Or Soro’s will attract a young person for all the wrong reasons.
They may like the fact that we step with Kanes, Or the attention they we get from women, or whatever…
We will straighten all of those misconceptions about Kappa life out when the scroller pledges KAΨ….

Sorry, i just can’t see how a grown ass man or woman would have ANY INTEREST in seeing this movie. I am out of high school and just out of college. This movie has no place in my life so i probably won’t go see it. I can’t relate to it……
Mehki looks bloated, and his girlfriend looks old in the face, not cute.
Darren Dewitt looks like he’s dating his older wiser sister in Angie Stone, though i am cheering for them. Angie Stone is certainly a hand full from what i seen on celebrity fit club.
Kenya Moore looks absolutely gorgeous.
Congrats to Tia and her fiance.
Meagan looks beautiful, and her acting is definitely improving everytime i see her in something.
Gabby is always on point.
Neyo looks gay as hell, and i don’t care what no one says. He’s talented though.
Essence Atkins looks like she has a attitude problem (could be wrong) and maybe that’s why her ass is by herself and not with a date.

No disrespect to Bill at all…everyone is entitled to their opinion..i am NO ONE to judge another…
However just give it a chance.
Its a Black film, we supported Boyz n the Hood, Menace II Society, Harlem Nights, Poetic Justice…
We could go on and on, but in the end its about supporting one another…Im going to see it because it looks interesting. I attended an HBCU, wanted to pledge (line was suspended) and Im fully aware that its not all about stepping.
Steve Harvey (Omega Psi Phi) even has a commercial about this movie saying for everyone to go support it.

All Im saying alot of us are acting like stepping, partying and all that other stuff that movie might show is not what we do..and if you didnt do it fine…but it is happening somewhere. Again stepping is not a bad thing. I being a Zeta know it is not the only thing we do…but stepping can teach you discipline, teamwork and respect for others. In my book those are good life lessons.

I don’t know if someone has said this already, but it looks like the stepping version of “Drumline”. 10-12 years ago, every movie was about “thuglife”, 6,7 years ago it was blacks gettin’ married, and now it’s blacks at college tapdancing because they’re in college. Everyone goes through challenges in their life. Just because he thought he was coming in for one reason (stepping help)..through the process of him becoming a member can he not find out there is more than just stepping to our orgs? I know alot of people that in the beginning joining for the wrong reason and oh when the membership process was over, they had a new found respect for the organization.

Hey now…
People shouldn’t generalize anyone’s reasons for being Greek… I know I personally did not join Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. for the parties or the “prestige” or anything of that sort but because they were the leaders on campus…a predominately white campus at that. Members of my chapter made history as the first black student body president and the first black initiates to prestigious honorary societies among other things. Their achievements and their dedication to service is what attracted me. I wanted to align myself with a group of women that like me, had high standards for themselves and their community. This motivation for wanting to align oneself with whatever organization holds true for many members that are Greek. Though the social side attracts some, the service attracts others.
Anyway,
I think the issue with Alpha initially not supporting the movie was that the movie makers used their copyrighted trademarks without asking. The rule of copyright infringement goes across the board from music and art to businesses and organizational trademarks. For instance, you can’t legally take a copyrighted picture from a website and use it on your own site without asking because that is illegal. Same with his movie, you can’t just include a Greek org wearing nalia without asking, even if it’s in the background because that is a copyrighted trademark.
On a related note…
What is Meagn so dressed up for?

The reason why I respect BOTH of your individual POV’s is because you will state the truth EVEN if it goes against the grain.
Part of being a LEADER is stating things that may hurt your people, but those expression of TRUTH as you see it, will eventually HELP YOUR PEOPLE.
So, If you have something to say, by ALL MEANS SAY IT.
We will always be cool.

Black people we say we dont want buffoonery (sp), crazy antics, violence and images of drug dealing and such in a movie, ..then we will knock a potentially positive movie. Referring to Stomp the Yard… We have positive movies..and Im going to run this example in the ground, but a positive movie like Akeelah and the Bee came out and we didnt support it. Black folks we need to make up our minds and quit making excuses. And if you dont like it, what are we doing to change it besides complaining???? GO SEE THE MOVIE FOR YOURSELF

Well..What BILL has done about it is this:
I’ve had conversations with Angel (the Creator of Concrete Loop) in regards of starting some sort of Concrete Loop Book Club where we can DISCUSS BOOKS that we read….
There IS a Logistics issue…
Angel says that she is open to that ideal, but she would much rather have a BOOK FORUM set up specifically for discussions about Black Authors as opposed to this particular blog…….
As a people, I feel as though we watch and rely TOO MUCH on TV, Video’s & Movies.
I feel that if we as a people took more time to READ BOOKS we would be more enlightened, and one would have increased communication skills..
Have you taken a look at most of the posters comments on this Blog (epecially when it has to do with Beyonce or Rihanna). The amount of mispelled words, profanity, grammmatical errors, etc, etc….
The LAST thing some of the youngins on CL needs to do is SEE ANOTHER MOVIE about singing & dancing…

You are right about the spell check. Some people may right blogs in slang or ebonics. You seem to be a smart well rounded man. I know you know that ebonics is not ghetto. Ghetto is an isolated civilization. Ebonics was first used by slaves who were learning English. Example: butta instead of butter. Ebonics is not accepted everywhere. I’m not a teacher, but people write responses on most blogs in an unformal way. It doesn’t mean that they are less educated. As for profanity - they can’t find a positive way of expressing themselves.

@#170 Ur point is understood however ur still wrong…..I have worked in corperate America for over 9 yrs and can say that I have never been overlooked of a promotion bcuz of a reality show!?? Thats going over board….If u have been overlooked for a promotion sweetie u need to look @the man in the mirror.
I’ve worked for a company who has just as many black managers as whites. However, there are more white ceo’s and presidents then there are blacks. Not bcuz of reality t.v., its politics. There will never be a black or hispanic president for that matter and it doesnt matter if Martin Luther King rose from the dead and ran for president, its not happenin.
For u to say I need to pick up a book is crazy bcuz I read everyday. Sorry u feel that ur real life situations are stemmed from reality t.v. but u have to own up to ur reality… T.v. is for entertainment only and ur career is a reflection of u. When u get a promotion or raise @work its not bcuz of what N.Y. or Flava Flav did last week, lol. Cmon, b real.

You have me over here cracking up! I understand brother, I understand.
As far as the spelling is concerned, It’s not even new, Prince has been writing his lyrics that way for years. But at that time it was “creative”, now everyone thinks it’s the norm. Which is why I hate reading those “hood” books and I refuse to let my young family members read them. For individuals who are still learning english language, you cannot let them read books that misspell everything, they won’t know any better.
But to also be fair, sometimes when you are posting, it’s quicker to use shortcuts in spelling and symbols. I usually chalk it up to most posters trying to be quick in expressing what they want to say by using fewer words. I do it myself from time 2 time…get it? LOL…
But seriously, you are cracking me up! LOL! All we need to do is get some bells…

There’s a more normal natural flow when you allow person to discuss things that cross their minds (like your comment about the CNN Anchor).

These people really get HYPED if you don’t agree with their bullshit, and notice that when they try to refute something, there are never any facts. So damn emotional. That’s why I said that the white man won’t bankroll a real movie because movies and TV are very impressionable. I remember when Malcolm X came out and it had brothers wearin’ the X caps and everything. The white man monitors those type of things believe it or not. That’s why they’ll never make a Nat Turner Story or “Hannibal”. Imagine showing tens of thousands of black men whuppin’ the Romans’ asses up and down Italy. It would look too much like a race war, lol, and it might alter the lie that blacks don’t have a history in antiquity.

THERE IS A TIME AND PLACE FOR EVERYTHING. MOST PEOPLE, LIKE MYSELF, COME HERE TO READ ABOUT MOSTLY MEANINGLESS THINGS (ASIDE FROM THE MUSIC REVIEWS, INTERVIEWS AND THE OCCASIONAL SOCIAL AWARENESS POST) FOR FUN AND CRACK A JOKE OR TWO BECAUSE THEY GET TIRED OF THE MONOTONY THAT IS THEIR DAILY JOB. MOST OF THE TIME I WRITE IN SLANG AND ABBREVIATE THINGS. I CAN’T SPEAK FOR ANYONE ELSE BUT WHAT I WRITE ON A GOSSIP/ENTERTAINMENT BLOG HAS NO BEARING ON MY EDUCATION. BECAUSE THIS IS TRUE FOR ME, I GIVE OTHERS THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT.
WE CAN ONLY COMMENT ON WHAT IS POSTED; WE HAVE NO CONTROL OVER THIS. THE COMMENT SECTION IS NOT MEANT TO BE A FORUM FOR PEOPLE TO DISCUSS WHATEVER, WHENEVER. THAT’S WHAT THE CHATROOM IS FOR. I THINK ONE OF THE FIRST THINGS ANGEL SAID WHEN THE CHATROOM LINK WAS POSTED WAS, “NOW MAYBE THE COMMENTS CAN STAY ON TOPIC.”
I LIKE TO HAVE SPIRITED DEBATES ABOUT THINGS OTHER THAN BEYONCE’S LACEFRONT TOO, BUT I KNOW NOT TO COME TO A GOSSIP BLOG LOOKING FOR ONE.

Tia’s fiance looks like a youngin. I like her new show.
Gabby and Meagan are pretty girls. Where did Meagan think she was going?
Kenya Moore is a beautiful woman. Why don’t ppl talk about her a lot when it comes to talking about who is pretty? I heard she was a straight up hoe in some movie.

Hey everyone and Bill,
You Bill of all people should go and see the movie you have been talking down about it the most. You should see it to verify if it really is that bad. DID YOU SEE JET MAGAZINE? DID YOU READ THE ARTICLE ABOUT THE MOVIE AND THE ARTICLE WITH DARYL MATTHEWS SR., THE GENERAL PRESIDENT OF ALPHA PHI ALPHA FRATERNITY?? No! You didn’t! On page 63 of the January 8th 2007 Jet Magazine it says and I quote “…After several weeks of meaningful and productive discussions with the exucitve leadership of Sony, Screen Gems, and [Daryl Matthews Sr.] The film has been revised to the satisfaction of the Fraternity.” Matter of fact now that certain members of the fraternity have viewed the film they are now backing the movie due to the fact that this is not a dance movie that insignificantly glorifies fraternities. In fact, ‘Stomp The Yard’ shows the brotherhood, allegiance, and bond/outlook within the fraternities. Bill you of all people should be the first in line. To put so much time into putting down a movie, you need to see for yourself what this is truly about and everyone PICK UP THAT JET MAGAZINE AND READ THE ARTICLE. THE TITLE OF IT IS “WHY ‘STOMP THE YARD’ IS THE MUST-SEE MOVIE OF THE SEASON” IN JET MAGAZINE PEOPLE. ONE OF THE BEST SELLING AND MOST FOLLOWED MAGAZINES IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. If you really want to get into it I got more facts for you Bill just let me know 1 more day till its released and the streets talk you better hit up fandango Haaa

Ohh and Anasstashshia or however u spell your name you should go see it to you’d be suprised of the message…and the fact that the movie is not about dance. You guys will hear the buzz and you’ll end up at the theater so I really don’t have to say anything else adios!

This Movie Will Have a POWERFUL Message!
http://imdb.com/title/tt0...539/board/thread/63609298
First question I have for most of you bashing this movie? Have you all seen the movie? How can anyone criticize a movie they haven’t seen yet?
I saw an advance screening of the movie and the major plot “AIN’T” about stepping but how a smart black male from the wrong side of the tracks gets an opportunity unfortunately thru tragedy to attend a HBCU, and learns thru his frat brothers the meaning of brotherhood, teamwork, loyalty and unity. This not only sends a message to those looking to be a part of something positive instead of negative, that can change their lives for the better. A high percentage of AFRICAN AMERICAN MALES are either in gangs, jail, dead, or not doing anything with their lives. The message from this movie is, despite my environment, I can make something out of myself. If this movie can inspire 1 person to pursue an education thru an institute of higher learning, then it did it’s job. And that is the whole meaning behind this film.
Stomp the yard has MAJOR support from 100 black men, NAACP and most of the Greek organizations who have seen the final cut of the movie. This movie is getting major plug on all the major networks (ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX), radio stations, talk shows, celebrities, etc. This is a 30 million dollar film so this if far from a LOW BUDGET MOVIE!
From the films producer:
“I’m happy that all issues with the fraternities and sororities have been resolved.” states the film’s producer Will Packer, a Florida A&M grad and 13-year brother of Alpha Phi Alpha. “This film was made to highlight the positives of these great organizations and I know it will make their memberships proud. In fact when the Alpha Phi Alpha rep watched the film to verify removal of their references, he stated that it made him proud. That was great validation.”In honor of the film’s debut on Martin Luther King, Jr. weekend, Sony Pictures recently made the historic announcement that 2.5% of the proceeds from the film’s opening weekend gross will be donated to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington DC. The MLK Memorial is the only Memorial on the National Mall dedicated to an African-American.
This is what NAACP had to say about the movie:
“This film evokes strong discussion on the importance of education, tradition and contemporary culture. It depicts the college experience as a medium that can positively enhance and transform the lives of youth ,” said Rev. Charles L. White, Jr. Director of the NAACP Southeast Region. “The NAACP for over 97 years has been the champion for human and civil rights of all Americans ensuring that African Americans in particular are portrayed in a positive light in the media. We recognize that when it comes to forming ideas and establishing norms, nothing is more influential than the images and concepts delivered into our lives on a daily basis by radio, television, film and the Internet. This film is a right step in a very positive direction. ”
This is what 100 black men had to say:
“This film stresses the value of unity while offering the world an image of our community’s best and brightest,” said John T. Grant CEO 100 Black Men of Atlanta, Inc. “Our organization continues to provide educational and enrichment opportunities to America’s youth through the united resources of a similar collective, and we are truly pleased to support films that showcase the genuine power of our collective spirit.”
‘STOMP THE YARD’ is the first film in contemporary cinema to take a peek into black college life, black Greek life and the ultra-competitive world of stepping. ‘STOMP THE YARD’ opens in theaters everywhere January 12th.

Katrina,
What I’m saying is that while I think it’s wonderful that the young man in this movie chose to go to college, I think it’s a bad message that he was FORCED to either go to college or go to jail. I personally am tired of movies where that’s the only option for black youth; jail or college. I went to college and it was not forced upon me by a judiciary system. I’m just saying that we as black people are always portrayed as struggling and hustling all the damn time. I’m sick of it. The storyline for this movie could have been just as effective without the whole jail/someone getting killed theme.

I didn’t know Bill was stating that speakin in slang made you dumb.
Do I need to go back thru and re-read the posts? C;mon now!
I personally speak proper English when I’m in the workplace and to my children. However, when I’m with my girlfriends or family, I speak in SLANG!
You have to know how to switch it up IF you are into it. When my friends call me at work or something, they’re like “Girl, you sound so white, I didn’t recognize you!” It’s all in being able to adapt to your environment!
But, some people choose not to speak SLANG and that’s cool. Do you! But, don’t knock others that do!
Just MY opninion!

The real fact is that this movie is just gonna be another “You Got Served” taking black culture down another 8 notches along with what B.E.T. has done wrong to black culture. All they do is show that Chris Brown and Ne-Yo are in the movie. Do we fucking care? Are they the representatives for black America in Hollywood? No! Neither of them can act and why is it that every two seconds on B.E.T. I see a “Stomp The Yard” commercial thats nothing but Chris Brown being showed over and damn over again. B.E.T. stays promoting his gay ass and he only in the movie for bout 10 minutes. This movie looks a damn mess and will undoubtedly have white people saying the “N” word a hell of a lot more in these LA comedy clubs.

I’m debating on whether or not to go see this movie. There are a lot of movies who use the hottest clips as the preview to draw your attention, and once you get to the theater its a bore. JillyBeans,
No that is not the only option for black youth. But it is the only options for black youth when they show their behinds in the street and get caught up and they are depending on the judge for mercy. For this particular situation he got in trouble and it was either jail or college. Who wouldnt go to college? And if that is what got to happen for you to go college. I say get it moving in the direction of the school. No matter what is a positive story in the end because he overcame his past and surroundings.
You said you are so tired of movies with this them…what other movie had this theme??

Please read the post Lanae0369 made its maybe like 10 or so up from this one or click my name and it will take you to a page where that post came from, just take it into consideration and please respond. Lanae0369 saw the movie and to tell you the truth DJ’s options weren’t Jail or School, but he got picked up for assault a crime that doesn’t neccessarily get jailtime but if u know anyone who’s been on probation u r allowed to leave the state to go to a university. With that said, “DJ”’s mom sends him to live with his uncle and get away from the life he lived, and attend school to better himself which his uncle works at. You people and your damn downplayed assumptions. If you hate so much u need to be the ones to see this film. Just read a review by 2 of your Frat bothers in Vibe Magazine [Page 40] - They give the movie two thumbs up.
Two of the most telling comments ” I do think the message of overcoming adversity is good for the youth “- and
“Stepping is a lifesytle that goes back to our Ancestors in Africa. But being in a fraternity isn’t just about stepping or partying. It’s not what your fraternity can do for you; it’s what you can do for your fraternity”

Honestly, I wouldn’t waste two cents going to see this cliched, repeat movie. All I gotta do is combine Drumline and You got Served and wow…..its basically the exact same thing!! I’m sick of seeing movies set in college surroundings with no studying going on to speak of! But I digress… And why can’t Meagan Good get a role in a movie with real substance? All I’ve seen her star in since Eve’s Bayou or w/e is ghetto-ass shit that’s not even worth catching on cable. Besides these ticky-tack hood/teen movies she’s done, she’s probably been sittin on her ass waiting for a photo-op. Or doing her so called, “modeling”, which consists of her eyes screaming, “please fuck me”. Oh she produced some movie called, “Miles from Home” but it’s so lame and tasteless it’ll only show in film festivals. And Brick? Yea no comment on that one… If you think I’m hatin on Meagan..I’m not. I just don’t think its cool to be so overrated and yet suck so bad, truth hurts. If she represented all it took to make a living in hollywood then anyone could be a movie star..no talent needed. I’m not knockin her cuz I know she’s gotta keep money in her pocket to support her hair-weave addiction but damn..she seriously works my nerves constantly playing the brainless half-witted, half-naked girl love intrest!! Some advice Meagan: get an acting coach and step up ur game, find some intelligent roles to play that will actually help you as an actress, not further brand u as a brainless sex symbol. Maybe then you can be as famed as Denzel Washington and actually do something POSITIVE for our African-American race.
In conclusion, I’d like to give this movie a “hell to da muh fuckin’ naw”!! lol.

I totally agree, movies like this do nothing but further sterotype our race and culture as a whole and make other races, whites especially, look down their noses at us cuz we can’t produce a film with actual taste. So what if these so called musicians are popular and have a few cd’s out? That don’t mean they can cross over to acting and they sure as hell need to let this be the last time they ever try!
Props to Dreamgirls director/producer. Now that is a film to be proud of 4realz!

It’s just that we see these same movies come out every year and what is the station that be promoting them?…B.E.T. (or should I say D.N.T Dumb N***a Television). And then for a fact I know that black America is being subjected to this nonsense that all we do in college is “stepping.” Umm…when are they gonna make more competent movies in black Hollywood where we’re learning to become doctors or pursuing hard working careers (like in that Will Smith movie). All this movie is is just for little teen girls to see Chris Brown and Ne-yo get they 2 minutes of screen time. And to top off the entire nonsense they actually got Megan Good the token dumb ho girlfriend who doin nothin but showin off her booty for the camera. Take for instance the commercials you see on TV that are based in “the hood.” (Look for a anti-drug commercial and you’ll know what I’m talking about). The white directors just keep writing the dumbest nonsensical stuff for us to say, and they are gonna always do this if we keep putting out shit like “Stomp the Yard.”

They could have just gone straight to DVD with this one….
++++++++++++++++
Here’s an option- It’s called “PRIDE”
This is a new movie that is based on a true story based on an all-Black
swimming team in the 70’s.
It stars Terrence Howard, Bernie Mac, Kimberley Elise and Diana Ross’
son Evan Ross to
name a few.

To tell Tia and Tamera apart, Tamera has a small mole on her face, and Tia doesn’t. The movie was okay, wasn’t all that, but Chris and Ne-Yo did good for their debuts.

…#52 H-Town Chic:
We share the very same sentiments on this right here…YES, I would indeed go see “FREEDOM WRITERS” over this movie…After I saw “Freedom Writers” the other nite, I stepped in 2 glimpse Stomp and all I saw was “no creativity”…
…I feel it’s riding on the names alone ((??))…

Evan Ross looks like the walking dead. He needs to take fashion tips from older sis, Tracee!
