NEW YORK TALKS ABOUT NEW SHOW & MORE

Monday, January 8, 2007

ny.jpg

The Flavor of Love blog always stays on top of anything FOL related, so when I saw the link to Karu F. Daniels’ ‘New York’ interview, you know I had to post it.

Also, make sure you watch “I Love New York” when it airs tonight on VH1.

So are you from Rochester or Syracuse?
You know what baby? Actually I’m from upstate New York, New Hartford New York. So that’s even farther up there. It’s past Buffalo, it’s cold, it’s just a weary little city.

And now you’re putting Upstate New York on the map.
You know what baby? Yes. I’m definitely putting Upstate New York on the map and I’m happy to do it.

You’ve been described as the “Grand Diva of Arbitrary Emotions.”
What? Are you serious?

Well that’s what it says on VH1.
Well you know what baby, I really don’t go on the ‘net that much because I don’t have that much time to do stuff like that. But if that is out there for me, you know I’ll take it. I’ll be that. I’m that then. Okay.

It’s all about the internet.
It truly is. I should be ashamed of myself but I’m not. I don’t really get online as much as I should but that’s a great title to hold.

What do you in your pastime?
In my spare time, I’m basically giving a lot of attention to my nails and my skin. I’m a real huge skin person. I’m constantly washing my face making sure it’s clear and clean and making sure my nails are clean. I’m just a big skin and nails person. I hope that doesn’t sound too weird but that’s what I do in my spare time — making sure that everything is on the up and up.

You save that for ‘Essence’ magazine.

What? (laughing loudly)

What was your life like before all of this television stuff? Were you an aspiring actress or something like that?
Seriously, yes I was. I was an aspiring actress. And I still am. Basically nothing has changed since the show except the recognition. Now when I walk down the street I’m easily recognized. I mean that’s the only thing that has changed in my life.

Who is Tiffany Pollard and who is Tiffany Patterson. You’re referred to one or the other and I’m confused? What’s the difference between the two of them?
Well you know I am here to set the record. Tiffany Pollard P-O-L-L-A-R-D, that’s me. That’s my last name and that’s who I am. Tiffany Patterson is basically, uh (pause) well I could tell you how that went about; My mom and my dad aren’t married. My mom’s last name is Patterson but I’m carrying my father’s last name. That’s the name I grew up so that’s my real name, Tiffany Pollard.

Well what exactly are you looking for outside of just “a man”? What qualities were you seeking when you were filming this?
That’s a great question. When we were filming the producers they wanted to know what was my type, in terms of looks. For me, I don’t really have a type when it comes down to looks.

Well after you pined for Flavor Flav, you obviously don’t.
(scream) You know what, I ain’t even going there with you. I’m going to leave that alone.

I love Flav and I think he’s hilarious. But come on.
He’s styling, he’s cute and everybody (pause) is beautiful in their own way. But [for] me, my type is someone that meshes well with my inner being — someone who can deal with the fact that sometimes I have my days when I’m problematic and sometimes I’m going to have my days when I’m going to be on his side. Someone that can definitely take me on as a whole. That’s what I was looking for.

So it’s not a physical thing?
Oh, absolutely not. Looks never mattered to me.

Oh okay because you have a motley mix of guys on this show — from the rooter to the tooter.
You know I had to do it like that.

So how long did the show take to produce?
It took about a good three and a half [weeks], I’ll say.

So it’s going to be packaged. And how many episodes are we getting?
You guys are going to get ten luscious episodes.

#143, 144, 145, and 146. I co-sign with all of you!

To hear Black Americans cheering on this stuff blows my MIND! I feel like I am living in some nightmare. How did we get to the point where even ONE of us could have the gall to voluntarily present him/herself like THAT in 2007. No shame? No pride? No self-respect? Shows like Springer, Maury, Flavor of Love pimp the foolishness of the most ignorant members of our now pathetic race.

To those of you who say ‘white folks look crazy too’. They are not hated by the world. They are not an ‘unknown’, misunderstood race. They are not considered ignorant and unworthy, at birth. Their success, power, and influence FAR outweigh their select silly one-off antics. We do not have such a luxury and will increasingly suffer for it.

We should be as vigilant as the Jews when it comes to protecting our image.

Wonder why other groups routinely vote or work to undermine anthing supporting black advancement? Employment. Education. Law. Keep reinforcing images of blacks acting uncivilized and unworthy.

I AGREE WITH #149. WHY EVERYBODY SAYING THAT WHITE PPL PUTTIN ON THE SHOW TO DEGRADE BLACKS AND A LOT OF REALITY SHOWS HAS WHITES “DEGRADING” EACH OTHER. I PERSONALLY DONT WATCH “JACKASS” WHICH HAS WHITE PPL BEING REALLY “STUPID” BUT A LOT OF WHITE PPL WATCH IT. SO WHY YOU ALL THINK WHITE PPL WATCHIN FOL OR ILNY, THEY MAY NOT BE AS WELL AS THERE MAY BE BUT ITS NOT GONNA STOP THE PRODUCERS FROM PUTTING OUT SOMETHING THAT THEY THINK APPEALS TO A CERTAIN AUDIENCE

New Hartford, NY is in the middle of Upstate New York, east of Buffalo. Apparently, She doesn’t know where she spent her time. What I find funny is that this area is actually an upper class, suburban, bmw driving kinda area. As someone from a town close to there, I can say for sure that no one in that town wants her representing them. I would rather stick to the successful athletes from that area to represent our beautiful upstate New York. I think we’ll pass on the trash. Thanks anyway!

#155 hit the nail on the head when u mentioned Jackass, I mean thats one show I would never watch bcuz its soooo stupid and meaningless and lacks any dialouge or cause. As for #154, u cant compare black ppl with Jews bcuz thats a religion….Do u think u would see a reality Christian, Jehovah witness or Seventh Day Adventist show with ppl acting like these groups on reality t.v., drinking, smoking, walking around naked and fighting. Hell to the No!

But on the other hand do u even watch the Trinity Broadcast Network or The World Harvest Channel or any other religious channel for that matter? There are plenty of black folks who are acting with a cause there…… Clearly not bcuz ur @zz was watchin I Love New York just like the rest of us on here. Be for real. U could have turned the channel but I bet all the ppl who hated on I love N.Y. or FOL will be tuned in next week. Ha!

I didn’t think Dave Chappelle was funny when his show was on regular season and EVERYONE thought he was the best thing since sliced bread. But you know, I have to honestly say, I actually sat down and watched the DVD.

I laughed my azz off on the Sam Adams skit. Sometimes in my busy life, I need a release. Outside of playing with my kiddos, spending time with my man, it’s laughter.

If something can make me laugh and take the stress out of my life and noone is being harmed, I’m good. As far as this I LUV NY show, I can take it or leave it. However, I’ma watch a couple episodes just to have 2 cents to talk about on it!

#166, I can’t agree with you. It is refreshing to see that there are well meaning, deep thinking, concerned, young Black Americans who will ‘hate’ on the bullshit when given the platform and opportunity.

I was starting to think I was alone.

Interesting comment (not directly related, but follow along): I was asking a couple of my Mexican buddies who live in LA ‘why is it that the Mexicans keep preying on the blacks’ (literally ‘target practice’ on anyone black, if they can get away with it — its been really hot for over a year now)? Their separate responses were interesting, which started off with this: “You know, you’ve gotta understand something, they learn (media)to hate and disrespect blacks while in Mexico, and simply get the opportunity to clown on the blacks when they get here.”

Obviously, this is in no way a complete answer, but thinking folks can understand what this small recent (yesterday) anectdote highlights.

TO Bill and Windwalker…knowledge truly is power…it is very disheartening to read these comment typed by BLACK people, MY people, OUR people. They truly fail to see the big picture.

NinjaGirl..I seriously recommend you pick up a book and understand where you come from. You by far make the most uninformed comments on this thread. For the record, I do not watch those trash shows like Flavor of Love, I Love NY or that stupid ass Dave Chappelle show. So don’t assume just because I post on the topic that I’m tuned in with the rest of you dumb ass black people who are comatose at the wheel.

I’m going to make this point very brief, because i doubt that I can even shed some light on an individual with no self awareness like yourself. Listen very closely: you CANNOT and WILL NEVER be able to compare blacks to whites. Throwing up idiotic white shows like The Real World and Jackass does not strengthen your argument. First off, like someone clearly stated, White people do not have a negative image to fight worldwide. White people are not disrespected and viewed as a inferior race the way blacks are. Whites DO NOT have to worry about damage control the way we do. White people are not portrayed as a societal burden like blacks are. White lives are considered valuable, whereas the life of a black person is seen as dispensable. Whites as a group make the decisions, own and create the majority of the wealth generated worldwide and are RESPECTED. This is not the case for us. Do you see the damage that shows like this create? The next time you’re passed up for a promotion at work, fail to secure a job interview with a good company, or travel to another country and are treated like dog shit, turn on the television…take your pick between Flavor of Love, I Love NY or the Dave Chappelle show just to name a few and laugh like a stupid donkey. The rest of the world will be laughing as well….AT you and black people collectively.

True,
The purpose of a Blog is so that people can give their OPINION on the topic.

Why people feel that a person should not have an issue with the subject matter is beyond me…

Thanks for relating your experiences with the Mexicans.

That just reinforces the point that sometimes the images presented in the Media about Blacks can have a negative effect on our race.

@#170 Ur point is understood however ur still wrong…..I have worked in corperate America for over 9 yrs and can say that I have never been overlooked of a promotion bcuz of a reality show!?? Thats going over board….If u have been overlooked for a promotion sweetie u need to look @the man in the mirror.

I’ve worked for a company who has just as many black managers as whites. However, there are more white ceo’s and presidents then there are blacks. Not bcuz of reality t.v., its politics. There will never be a black or hispanic president for that matter and it doesnt matter if Martin Luther King rose from the dead and ran for president, its not happenin.

For u to say I need to pick up a book is crazy bcuz I read everyday. Sorry u feel that ur real life situations are stemmed from reality t.v. but u have to own up to ur reality… T.v. is for entertainment only and ur career is a reflection of u. When u get a promotion or raise @work its not bcuz of what N.Y. or Flava Flav did last week, lol. Cmon, b real.

#180 ninagirl1, I have read all of your posts on this thread. In all seriousness, serious question, Are you trying to:

1. Play ‘devils advocate’, and make senseless statements for the sake of arguement? or

2. Trying to be coy and funny? or

3. Really BELIEVE what you have been writing?

Maybe I am lost to the joke or something, because you really can’t be for real…like ‘for real for real’. Right?

Wednesday, January 10, 2007 /

Windwalker….I agree with you. I am starting to believe that Ninagirl is indeed playing devil’s advocate or being contrary just for sport. I refuse to believe that any enlightened, well-read black person (and by well-read I’m not talking about Vibe, Essence or Ebony magazines) would believe that garbage she is typing.

Because you seem to have completely missed the mark Ninagirl, the subject of my post is not about individual career successes, but about the success and failure of black people as a RACE (meaning as a whole). If anyone cannot/will not understand the correlation between a negative image, lack of self-respect and pride and the progression of a people, then we (meaning ALL of us) truly are in trouble.

Wow Reality_Check

An amazing rebuttal–something I’ve always thought but could not articulate. I lived in Southern France for a year studying. Every time I would go out with my friends, i would always be apporached by nasty french guys who wanted a guick piece. They would sexualize me, call me names like Josophine Baker, Naomi Campbell, Little Kim…I look like none of these women. I was so confused as to why I got these names it seemed so random, then, i was watching televison one night (Canal Plus) and saw these coon shows being aired and dubbed in french. Trust me, the dubbing is even worse, makes us look even more stupid. Instead of seeing me as a PhD candidate in Physics studying in France, they saw me as a loose black negro bitch.

I agree with you 100%. The plight of blacks and the rest of the world is like comparing apples and oranges. We do need to wake up!

Thanks for your well stated post.

184.

Ninagirl1

Wednesday, January 10, 2007 /

To Windwalker, Edub and Reality Check, yes I’m serious. I can relate to Edubs comments about being called Lil Kim etc…bcuz its happened to me b-4 but my hair was in a weave and I may have appeared to resemble the rap star. However, that comment came from a black person on my job. :O

My point is that anyone could say ok 10% of Catholic priest are molesting the boys in the church than assume u cant trust any Catholic priest or if 5% of Caucasian males are pediphiles and serial killers than u would say, generally all of them are sick. We all watch the news everyday and move on. But its not ok to judge one person or ppl in whole bcuz of a small is acting out, thats called racism.

Racism still exist in the new millenia and I agree that its awful. But it wouldnt matter if all of the black t.v. shows that exploit black ppl were banned and all we could watch was the Cosbys or similar shows, even then there would still be racism. All we can do is represent our selves as indivisuals and let our lights shine. U all seem really bitter about this subject and Im sorry that the world has made u all so biased however, ppl will b ppl and evil walks the earth everyday. Instead of complaining about I luv N.Y. likes its such a serious subject lets talk about A.I.D.’s in Africa and the U.S., now thats a problem.

windwalker1313

#184, ninagirl1

1. Regarding your resemblance to L’il Kim for one day, your point is irrelevant.

2. Regarding the Catholic Church and little boys, the Church clearly demonstrated that it understands that ‘Image IS Everything’, and worked hard to handle the bullshit (ex: they covered the shit up for years). So, your point is lost.

3. Regarding your point that racism will always be racism, true. But, (a) it doesn’t necessarily have to be as severe as it is (ex: 2007 is presumably better than 1955), nor (b) should black folks do shit that makes the idea of racism seem like ‘logical sense’ (ex: “blacks are stupid and irrelevant, just look at how they act”).

4. Regarding your point that we should be talking about AIDS in Africa. Well, this blog string is about the ‘Flavor of Love and Ms.New York’.

Keep laughing at FlavorFlav, Ms.New York, Jerry Spring shows, Maury shows, and all of the ‘if a black man were President’ movies. You just keep laughing girl. Keep on giggling.

I don’t know you, you seem like a person who is proud of who you are. I admire and respect that. The shows like Jackass is degrading. I cant believe some of you people out their care what people say about our race. Im a young black African American female and there isn’t anything that the white man could put on tv or do to make me look down on my on race and say that black people or a disgrace. It’s people like Martin Luther King, Malcom X, Rosa Parks etc, that made me a believer. When I look at some of these tv shows I see white people on the dating shows going with the same sex, drinking and acting crazy, and then the show Jackass just takes the cake, it makes me happy to be BLACK. It must be something that the white people like about black people because now adays they are trying so hard to be, and when I see how easy it is for the black people to easily accept them burns me up. Its a bleesing to be black. If any one picked up a history book it was the white people who did something to every single race. LIKE I SAID ITS NOTHING A WHITE MAN CAN DO FOR ME TO PART MY LIPS A SAY BLACK PEOPLE ARE A DISGRACE. IM HAPPY TO BE BLACK. PEACE OUT.

198.

@Reality_Check, WTF does Jews have to do with the comment I made?

I AM TALKING ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE!!!! I am talking about the generation who was in fucking slavery for nearly 400 years, who was owned and controlled, who was stripped of nearly all rights and their freedom, who were not paid for their labor, who were lynched, beaten, raped, whipped. We were looked down on as we weren’t shit then and we are looked down on like we ain’t shit now. Wake the fuck up! And like I said, it has nothing to do with programs that are on TV. Before these programs came on they didn’t think any different.

Tiffany, I just saw the reunion show and man did Tango acted like a complete jackass. First he came out challenging Chance to a fight but surprisingly, Chance was not into that. We did not get why he still wanted to fight with them and he had already won. From this moment on we began to have doubts about you chosing him. He started to come of sounding really ignorant. He acted like an old dirty gangster. When he dumped you alot of us hadn’t even understood what he had said until you reacted that’s how dumb he came of. Girlfriend, don’t even worry about that and it don’t make no sense crying over SPOIL MILK. Our mamma’s have a saying and it goes ‘YOU DON’T HAVE TO MARRY THE FIRST MAN THAT PROPOSES’. So Tiff, today we’ll have a glass of champayne, a bowl of cookies ‘n’ cream ice-cream and turn on some old Tina Turner music because that’s a strong ass woman. THERE’S ONE THING WE WANT PATRICK TO KNOW THOUGH, IN LIFE YOU BETTER BE CAREFUL HOW YOU BURN THOSE BRIDGES BABY BECAUSE YOU NEVER KNOW……………….

Reality_Check,
There’s a lot of good points in your post(s).
I’d like to point out that Black Americans make up about 12% of the population here in the US. Just for the sake of pointing it out, white people make most of the decisions simply because they are the majority here. It’s pretty much statistics–if you put 88 purple beads in a jar with bead-sized holes in the top, add 12 red beads, mix them together, and then shake it (like a salt shaker) over a bowl, most of the beads that come out are probably going to be purple.

New York may be educated, but she doesn’t give the impression of being intelligent. Both she and her mother act a little strangely. However, I disagree that they are representing black people as a whole; possibly in other countries /if/ they get VH1 shows, but you hear about both Paris Hilton and New York as, for lack of a better word, “celeb-hos.”
Of course, it’s possible that she’s just pretending, but you’d think she would have caught herself about “arbitrary” in this interview.

Hopefully, people will just see this show as what it is: VH1’s attempt to pander to the same audiences who watch MTV’s Sweet Sixteen. The behavior is remarkably similar. Not to mention, all “reality” TV is fairly lame in the first place.
