Oprah Winfrey’s $40 million girls’ school in South Africa opened its doors on Tuesday to 152 students handpicked by the media mogul.
The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls in Henly-on-Klip fulfills a promise she made six years ago to former President Nelson Mandela to give students a better future.
“I wanted to give this opportunity to girls who had a light so bright that not even poverty could dim that light,” Winfrey said at a press conference, the Associated Press reports.
Mandela was among the guests at the opening, as were Tina Turner, Mary J. Blige and Mariah Carey, actors Sidney Poitier and Chris Tucker and director Spike Lee, according to the AP.
By providing education to the girls in the lavish setting, Winfrey said she hoped she could help “change the face of a nation” that had once been divided by apartheid. READ MORE at people>>

TMZ reported that Oprah “dissed” American children in an article for Newsweek, which put speculation on why she rejected the idea of building a school in the U.S – saying “If you ask the kids what they want or need, they will say an iPod or some sneakers. In South Africa, they don’t ask for money or toys. They ask for uniforms so they can go to school.”
I’m not going to get too deep into this, but there is a clear distinction between the conditions of children and education in Africa versus the conditions here. Do you guys think Oprah was not fair and should build a school here for disadvantaged inner city youth?

“Voodoo priests at risk as bird flu hits Africa”

Cotonou, Benin, – Priests who tear out the throats of live chickens in ritual sacrifices to Voodoo gods may risk contracting bird flu after the deadly virus reached Africa.
Voodoo priests in Benin, which borders with Nigeria where an outbreak of the deadly H5N1 virus was found in poultry last week, sacrifice animals to invoke blessings or favours from various gods.
Officials in the tiny West African country which is the home of the ancient religion say spreading the word about bird flu may help save the lives of Voodoo devotees.
“We have identified the groups at risk, including fetishists and followers of the Voodoo cult who sometimes kill animals with their teeth,” Guillaume Hounsou-ve, director of livestock at Benin’s Agriculture Ministry, told Reuters in an interview.
Sheep, goats and other animals are sometimes used for sacrifice, but the favourite offering is a chicken.
Priests commonly kill birds by ripping their throats out with their teeth or using a knife to cut their heads off, both of which would bring them into contact with chicken blood, one of the ways bird flu is thought to be spread to humans.
Tracking Africa’s child trafficking
Almost all African states are affected by trafficking as importers or exporters, or both, a United Nations Children’s Fund report says.
It also warns that children are the biggest victims of trafficking: forced into slavery, recruited as child soldiers or sold into prostitution.
Thousands of Nigerian children and young people are trafficked each year, both within the country and beyond its borders.
No-one knows the scale of the problem, but the International Labour Organisation estimates at least 200,000 children are trafficked within west Africa annually.
In the eastern Nigerian city of Benin, girls and young women are sent to west Africa and Europe to work as prostitutes.
Many go willingly, buThey are taken to a witch doctor, sworn to secrecy and end up in effective slavery to the middle men who smuggle them abroad.
Other children are trafficked for work inside the country.
Girls and boys as young as six are taken from desperately poor homes and placed as domestic workers with strangers in the city.
In return, they are promised an education. In reality, they are often beaten, fed on leftovers, forced to work long hours and forbidden to go to school.
Other children are sent instead to work in quarries or plantations, both inside Nigeria and in neighbouring west African states.
Some are even trafficked for ritual purposes and end up dead.
The Nigerian government has now recognised the problem and last year outlawed trafficking and set up an agency to deal with offenders.
But they have a difficult task ahead. Close to 70% of the population live in poverty and traditional values have been eroded by years of misrule.
For many Nigerians, trafficking has become an accepted way of life.
In Morocco and in neighbouring Mauritania women and children are often treated as commodities.
While reporting from Mauritania, I met a runaway slave who told me she had been raped by the men of her master’s family.
Her children are still in his custody, born into slavery just as she and her mother was before her.
Slavery was officially abolished in Mauritania in the 1980s, but local associations say many families still have slaves, who they sometimes send to business associates to work off a debt.
Now in her late 20s, the runaway slave I spoke to had started working for her master as soon as she was old enough to carry water and clean.

ATHENS, Greece—If she runs away from her life of prostitution, her parents will become sick and die.
At least that’s what this Nigerian woman believes. The threatened curse, she claims, was part of a voodoo rite performed in her homeland just weeks before she was brought to Greece by a prostitution ring.
“I have no doubt in its power,” says the petite 24-year-old, who goes by the alias of Maria and described being forced into seven-night-a-week duty at a flophouse brothel on an Athens back street. “Even if I had a doubt, how could I risk the life of my mother and father?”
Maria’s case illustrates one of the least understood corners of the sex slavery underworld: gangs using the perceived potency of native West African voodoo and hexes to hold women in their grip. Recently, however, an unusual alliance has started fighting back.
