Serena Williams won her first title in two years when she defeated No. 1 ranked player in women’s tennis, Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-2 to win the Australian Open today.
Sharapova was run down by the Williams’ power and aggression, punctuated by fist pumps and glares.
Serena told Yahoo News that she was inspired by the memory of her sister, Yetunde Price, who was killed in 2003.
Usually I write, Look at the ball, move forward, do this, do that. Today I just had one word. My note was just Yetunde. Every changeover I looked at it and I just thought about how happy she would have been … about what an amazing sister she was to me. I just said, ‘Serena, this has to be more than enough to motivate me.’ And I think it was.
Williams entered the Australian Open ranked No. 81 in the world. But as she exits the tournament her projected ranking is 14, which is a phenomenal achievement.

For her to not have played almost any matches in 2006 and them come back in 2007 and win a GRAND SLAM is almost unthinkable in tennis. But no one has ever counted the Williams’ sisters out. Becuz they can come and go as they please in the tennis world and still DOMINATE when they get back. A fact that has always upset and perplexed the white audience who follows the game. Serena made over 8 million last year according to Forbes.com (Venus made 7 million I think) so even when they aren’t hitting balls, the dough is coming in.
I’m glad she won, but I honestly wish she and Venus would participate more throughout the season instead of just the big matches. tennis is boring without them.

I’m so proud of both her and Venus. With all the pressure they have on their shouldres, they continue to be shining examples. In regards to an earlier post that said “it’s just tennis”; I’m always glad to see us excel at something more than just the NFL and NBA. It shows the younger generation that no matter where you come from, you should never settle for what people expect from you. Tennis or not, the Williams sisters have made a place for themselves in sports history and no one can take that away. Congrats Serena once again!
