HOT OR NOT: BRICK & LACE

Thursday, February 15, 2007

bricklace.JPG

For the second edition of Hot or Not we have Akon’s new group, Brick and Lace. Nyanda and Nailah Thorbourne (who happen to be sisters) rep Jamaica and dub their music “sexy r&b meets dancehall.”

Check out their debut single, “Never, Never” and tell us whether you think it’s hot or not.
Brick & Lace - “Never Never” [LISTEN]

MORE ON THE GROUP

Born to a Jamaican father and an American mother and raised predominantly in Kingston, Jamaica –on an opulent musical diet of reggae, R&B, hip hop, pop and country– 26-year-old Nyanda and 24-year-old Nailah Thorbourne couldn’t help but be trans-eclectic. “We are a hybrid,” affirms Nailah in her effortlessly sexy West-Indian lilt. “It’s not fabricated at all; it’s who we are.”

WHY BRICK & LACE?

To the ladies of Brick & Lace, their name represents the duality and complexity of the everywoman. “Sometimes you want to wear a cap and sneakers and look grimy,” Nyanda tells. “And sometimes you want to wear your sexy dress and heels and look cute.” Nailah puts it all in perspective: “People always ask: ‘Who is Brick & Lace?’ And we always tell them it depends on the day!”

The beat isn’t bad, and their voices are adequate, but I have to agree with number 13. They just aren’t original, they aren’t bringing anything new to the table.

I don’t know, maybe at 20 years old(lol–like that’s old), my taste in music has changed…but R&B has been in such a funk for the past few years. Everything sounds the same-all these tired in one ear and out the other fads and elementary lyrics.

People, go to school! Read some books! Learn about the world and cultures around you! Learn how to play with and flip words! Grow a backbone and stand for something. I’m tired of these songs and lyrics that sound like they came out of a thirteen year old girl’s diary.

Because even for club bangers this shit is tired.

NEXT FREAKING A!!

It is a typical song, not a banger. Their looks might get them half way, but they gon need alot more to make it in this game…..NEXT

Ah Jesus Christ, they got signed? Brick and Lace has been pushing their mess out here forever. Jamaicans don’t play that shit though. It’s another formula thing. Brown skin girls with weaves who have a slip of singing talent.

Everyone wants to be famous.

There are better singers than them out here, trust me.

This is a coo song. Got a good beat, good vibe… Just so ya’ll know it’s not about originality anymore. It might sound good, and make you sound “musically cultured” to say that the music lacks creativity and originality, but to be honest, what else is there to do in music now? 20 years ago there were so many possibilities, but now, it’s mainly just about if you can make a hot song.

Besides, the people who do show “orginality” never get that publicity they deserve, cuz it’s just too different. All ya’ll saying it’s not orginal, ya’ll prolly only have well known artists in your music collection… We don’t venture out to appreciate different music. Therefore, the “original” stuff never sees the light of day. If it does, we critiize it cuz “we don’t get it” or “I’m not feeling it” or “What the hell is that”!

There are alot of talented and orginal artists…just look on myspace…

the song is ok. they look cute. if they come out with a hot video they are good. I mean if ciara can get away with “promise” then why can’t they get away with this. They aleast sound better.

Thursday, February 15, 2007 /

i don’t mind them but i’d like to hear more. i don’t automatically want to turn the music down so that’s a good sign

51.

Brandon Charles

Thursday, February 15, 2007 /

I heard this song the other day and I listened to it again and it still makes no sense. How can you start off sayin “You ain’t NEVER, NEVER, NEVER gone get it” and then say “You just MIGHT get it”? Is it never or maybe? Make up your mind. LOL. But seriously, the song is boring and filled with too many cliches like “switchin lanes” and “smokin dro.” THAT’s why people say it has no originality. They won’t get far if they don’t step it up.

53.

shannon75

Thursday, February 15, 2007 /

It sounds like it was made on a sound machine in someones basement. Why does most everything sound the same these days?

55.

Mee

Thursday, February 15, 2007 /

Not! They are cute ladies- as everyone has pointed out- (funny how looking good can make or break a career without having the requisite vocals huh?) The song is catchy but it’s not hot. I need to hear more, maybe a R&B song with substance that shows off their vocals before I can co-sign on “Nina-Sky” of the islands. Nuff Said.

Where are Maxwell and Teedra Moses when you need them? First that Brandon Hines is supposed to save R&B now this. I hope 2007 will be a better year for music because it’s really sorry rightnow.

It’s hot to me.

72.

what you know about that

Thursday, February 15, 2007 /

@NetworKing,

I feel you on that, but at the same time, people aren’t really selling albums for a reason….people are fed up with the same recycled garbage so they rather not purchase the music.

Also, I think record companies are responsible for the lack of creativity with artists. They keep under estimating what people are willing to accept. If you’re original, marketed will, and have a good sound, people WILL respond.
