JENNIFER HUDSON COVERS GIANT MAGAZINE
Thursday, February 1, 2007
ON HER SIZE
“Look, I used to be a size 22. Now, I’m a size 12. When I go to Hollywood stuff, I’m the biggest girl there. And I could care less. I still feel sexy and pretty whoever I’m standing next to because when I’m out in the real world, I’m the size of the average woman. And there is nothing wrong with us. There’s something wrong when you’re just skin and bones. It’s not cute. I love my size, period…. You gotta be comfortable in your own skin! I’m comfortable in mine. I don’t have a problem with it at all. I work with a trainer these days—to tone, not to lose. This jelly ain’t going nowhere.”
ON THE RUMORED FUED WITH BEYONCE
“I’m too busy trying to enjoy my blessings to be dwelling in mess. It’s not about that. It’s supposed to be about enjoying it. But then again, when something is good, people are always gonna try to find something wrong with it and try to throw a monkey wrench in there somewhere. We support each other as much as we did on day one. I mean, come on! That’s Beyoncé! We’d rather see people focus their attention on our work.”
ON FILMING DREAMGIRLS’ “AND I’M TELLING YOU”
“I think that was the most exposing scene, you know? And it was hard because I’m a newcomer, and everybody wants to come and watch the scene being done, so that was a little nerve-racking—like do they really need to have all of these people in the room? And I’m the only person on this stage, other than [co-star] Jamie [Foxx]. Just being able to match the emotion, when it was needed from the different angles, being able to hold on to it—it was a long process, and it was the last week. Everybody else was wrapped, and I was the very last to wrap. It took about three, four days to shoot. I had just shot “One Night Only” and “I Am Changing,” so all three of those, back to back to back… It was a blessing to have such a patient and kind director [Bill Condon] and for him to be able to know how to approach talent and get what he wants and needs from you.”
ON HER LOVE LIFE
“My boyfriend is my childhood sweetheart. We’ve been together since 1999! It’s crazy. I’m the dreamer and he supports my dreams – always has. He’s happy to be my rock and let me fly. I think it makes more sense to date someone outside of showbiz. He is stationary, stable, a home base. I’m on planes, here and there and always on the go. It’d be a whole different story if he was moving around, too. Instead I have a patient, understanding man who’s there for me when I get home. He’s home to me.”

That’s a lot of weight to go from a 22 to a 12. She looks good and she’s doing big things. I just wish she would stop looking so shocked when people talk to her or give her compliments. I can’t wait to see what God has in store for J-Hud!!! She’s highly favored.

No I garuntee give it some time. the same peopel in here praising her will be the ones in here doggin her out. I think the main reason peopl are so vocal in praising Jhud is to spite that other chick from the movie that shall remain nameless. I mean shes just as talented as she was on american idol and she didnt even make it to the top 3 , what happened? B happened. As soon as Jhud loses any more weight and gains more noteriety she will become less relatable then the hate will set in becuase thats what people do.

Its her perogative if she decides to loose weight, I will support her in whatever she decides. Her frame supports her size and she looks healthy. Tocarra from A.N.T.M. looks like she lost weight but she is still looking big and healthy. I guess some ppl will b madd just bcuz big girls are making headlines in the new millenium and skinny girls are getting a lot of pressure for setting bad examples to lil girls who are dying to be just like them.
I am a size 6 but my mother is big boned so I got luv for sistahs who represent their size with pride and class like JHUD, Queen Latifa, Raven Simone, Toccara Monique from the Parkers and newly added to the list Tyra. They give woman who are like them confidence to dress sexy and feel beautiful. Everyone in America cant all look the same, variety is the spice of life.

She’s on Oprah’s Pre-Oscar special right now and O just asked her about all the rumors that she and Beyonce aren’t getting along bc Bey wasn’t nominated and she was. J.Hud said it’s so funny how people can make up stuff or say anything about she and Beyonce when they don’t know either one of them personally! She also said Beyonce supports her just like she did from the beginning and that they are both just happy the film is being recognized. She said the rumors are ridiculous!
Oprah said she didn’t believe it anyway. She said the media always tries to put women up against one another but never men. SO TRUE!
Oprah also said…. she is BEYONCE KNOWLES for goodness sakes (saying that she shouldn’t have a reason to be jealous - O even knows that.. lol) and J.Hud agreed. J. Hud also said she’s bringing her mom to the Oscars with her.
I’m so happy that was said. It’s all nonsense!

I agree with #18. I love Jennifer but as soon as she does one little thing (in word or deed), SOME of the same people who are so in love with her now will be tearing her down. It’s the way of human nature so I hope she really does have a thick skin.
So, Jen here are your list of “don’ts” to stay in public favor (like that is even possible):
DON’T gain too much weight, then again don’t lose too much weight.
DON’T leave your high school beau for a white man or Jamie Foxx.
DON’T get plastic surgery.
DON’T start wearing blond weaves.
DON’T start posing half naked all over the place.
DON’T become over-exposed.
DON’T come out the crib looking busted…EVER!
Obviously, many of the above “don’ts” are dripping with sarcasm, but I hope my point was grasped.
Peace.

Ive known my off and on since 1999 too and we are even thinking about it yet. Maybe they were waiting on JHud’s career to take off first. Since he is an engineer, he is letting her live her dreams right now. IMO, he is a great BF for that. Anyway great article, keep doin you..stay true and humble and get some rest.

as far as looking shocked when people compliment her, it’s all new for her, this is her dream come true she still cant believe it, give it some time, she will get it, she is meeting people that she has idiolized for years, sitting with Oprah, it’s all so much to take in…

… i recently heard two songs that j.hud did. my advice - stay with the broadway show tunes that is where your strength is. you are not ready for the rnb race. you are right beyonce is BEYONCE. j.hud will lose her fans fast if she releases an album that sounds like the two songs that leaked recently. if you recall the people voted her off american idol - for good reason. STAY WITH THE BROADWAY SHOW TUNES J.HUD. don’t think that just because you wailed on a song that i have heard many sistas throw down on, you are ready for the rnb race. learn a lesson from jennifer holiday. she was the ish after dreamgirls on broadway - then she released an album. and that was that.

I wish JHud the best and she looks wonderful on the cover. I plan to buy her album and as long as she produces good music, she’ll have a returning fan.
It’s about time the soul in R&B comes back. Mary and Keyshia can’t do it by theirself. If anyone comments about that statment, please don’t. I don’t know if it’s me or what, but lately R&B has taken on a pop sound with the women. The only thing placing them in the R&B category is the color of their skin. Unless you’re going old school, then who is available today with that soulful sound?
If for some reason, her musical career doesn’t work out, she always has acting to fall back on.

Also Jennifer said this to Essences Mag:
http://www.people.com/peo...ticle/0,,20010541,00.html
Hudson also dismisses rumors that there was tension on the Dreamgirls set between herself and costar Beyoncé Knowles. “We clicked from day one,” she says.
She says she, Knowles and their fellow Dreamgirl Anika Noni Rose bonded over the fact that they’re all Virgos, and all have a mole in the same spot on the left side of their necks.
“It’s amazing to me that God took three different women from three different walks of life and created the Dreamgirls,” Hudson says. “We were meant to be together. When you look at us, you see it’s all connected. I’m loving Beyoncé.”
Photo by: Len Prince / Essence Magazine
Knowles has also dismissed feud rumors, telling reporters in December: “It’s really unfortunate that everyone is saying I’m jealous of Jennifer. … Because I’m a star they just automatically assume that I’m not humble enough to sit down and take a back seat, which I am.”
NO Beef just LOVE….

Thursday, February 1, 2007 /
Say what you want about Keyshia but I still rock her album. Hers, Mary’s, and anyone from the 90s and backwards. She may not be the best singer, but she has major potential to grow. Only if she doesn’t mess it up herself.
The difference is that you feel what she’s saying and you can hear in her voice that she’s experienced that pain. Now does she need to improve vocally live? Yes. Can’t never deny that.
Which goes back to proving my point….if I used her as an example of soulful R&B and your response is WTF, then that tells you the state of R&B today. Keyshia has potential. As long as she builds it up, then she’ll be in the game for a minute.

Well,
This is not her year…she cant act (I finally saw the movie)…Eddie & Jamie were the ONLY good actors in the film.
There was no main character to me—the may as well have nominated both Jennifer and Beyonce for best supporting—-Eddie & Jamie MADE that movie.
Until the movie, I was an avid J-hud supporter and honestly felt that Beyonce would not appease me in the film….I was wrong. Beyonce was cheated! She deserved just as much of a nod as J-hud and she would have had just as good a shot of winning were it not for her being classified as a “leading actress”.
J-hud, I think, will become arrogant overtime b/c Hollywood makes you that way quicker than Hollyhood (the music Industry). And yes, ppl will get tired of her.
After the Oscars, she will be passe’ and ppl will just be commenting on her looks at random parties and celeb events….yes, she is BLESSED—maybe she is favored, but she does NOT have “IT”…she is just a pawn in the game—a game that is looking for a new, healthy, identifiable image for Black women…and she is racking up accolades along the way!
Her and that BF will prob end in the near future.
And, yes, she needs to stop looking so damn shocked when ppl talk to her….its beginning to seem rehearsed and fake.
And…she should (along with many others) keep her titties in her damn clothes…cleavage is okay…but sagging tatas look cheap and hookerish—HIRE A NEW STYLIST.
And if she thinks she’s in good w/ BEyonce’, her ass better take another look at Kelly and Michelle b/c as the saying goes:
“Keep your friends close and your enemies closer”…that way you can weigh your competition…and something tells me that that is the situation here.
That said…in this interview, she sounds a little arrogant and the word choice of hers in her statements sound completely DIFFERENT from the Jennifer they show at LIVE events.
Too much, too fast = INSTANT DEATH!

well J Holliday didnt have the Star Maker Clive Davis behind her either, she wasnt sexy and pretty like JHUD either, I think Clive will make her a star but i think she will be more accepted by white people because we as a race are so negative towards our own (remember Whitney early on in her career)?
this girl can sing, her talent and range is so that there is no room on stage for all that dancers and hoopla some of the others do… I think her career will be well thought out because that white man Clive has something to prove(he can create a star that was kicked off of American Idol) time will tell, but i’m almost certain that we as a people will turn on her way before the media does, we always do…..

84 i agree with some of the things you said but the enemies part i don’t think so. kelly and michelle need to put thierselves out more, well at least kelly. No attention from the media no ablum sale, no mag covers, or commerials. To me jennifer wasn’t that great on AI she was forgettable and yes she could sing but so could Latoya London (she could have been lorelle in dreamgirls). FANTASIA Won and i voter for her every tuesday.
74 i said the same thing in another post.

And I feel pain in my ears everytime she sings. But Keyshia won’t make it in the industry unless she changes her attitude. Her attitude AND her voice stinks! Not a good combination.
I have to agree with you on Mary. Now that’s my girl right there. She does the damn thing! What do you think about Fantasia’s soulful voice? J Hudd is definitely going to do good. I am rooting for her all the way. She is a breath of fresh air to R&B.

He will make her a star because with the awards and the American Idol lost if he makes this happen, he will no doubt be given alot of the credit, all that is going on right now is calculated, trust me, he has his hands all over this.
i wish her the best, i like what I’ve seen so far, the voice is really nice, she reminds me of an early Whitney, maybe that’s what Clive sees, i think he said that about her recently…. that’s the difference between JHud and kimberly Locke- and you are so right he will be using it to his advantage, it’s not so much about JHUD but for him to get the credit….

Kimberley Locke was not signed with Clive Davis. She is and always has been signed to Curb Records and was more of a Pop/Country singer after American Idol.
I agree with #79. She will be in a totally different class of R&B than what’s out right now. It’ll be more traditional R&B and not this hip hop or pop flavored R&B. I personally like a little bit of all of it. I can’t deal with straight up soul R&B 24 hours a day. I can’t get ready for the club listening to that. LOL There is room for all of it. Jennifer will find her niche and she’ll be successful, it may not sell like the hip hop/pop stuff but she WILL be successful. I just hope that people are smart enough not to compare her sales to “others” knowing full well they are not doing the same type of music.

Foxxy380, you’re right. I did forget about Fantasia and another one, who gets no props….Leela James. I wholeheartedly agree that Fantasia is breath of fresh air.
#98 I agree with you and like how you separated the R&B out. Maybe the awards shows and the music industry need to do the same thing. You can’t listen to it 24 hours a day. When I’m ready to party, I turn on the radio to listen to some upbeat music to get the party started before I leave the house.
Without these few that sing traditional R&B, there is no else representing that style on the airwaves. Hip hop and pop flavored R&B dominate the airwaves though. I, too, hope that others don’t compare her numbers to other artists. If anyone wants to compare, I say compare people in the same R&B venue.

It’s obvious by your last comment “Where is your bf” how old—or lack thereof you are.
You dont have to agree with my opinion…that doesnt make it any less MY OPINION.

Have a nice day and a great afternoon snack once grade school lets out—and plz spare urself the embarrassment of commenting that you are a “grown ass woman” b/c IF that is true—your words speak volumes otherwise.

And to the person who said Bee does it better. Beyonce really doesn’t do it better. You can’t really compare J.Hud to beyonce musically because beyonce is a pop artist and j.hud has not really done anything in music besides be on american idol.

But Beyonce is who she is but not too many women can come from nothing and get an Oscar nominations and GG awars, SAG awards and no cd’s out whatsoever. No hate for Beyonce she’s doing her thing but she does nothing for me.

I think it makes more sense to date someone outside of showbiz. He is stationary, stable, a home base. I’m on planes, here and there and always on the go. It’d be a whole different story if he was moving around, too. Instead I have a patient, understanding man who’s there for me when I get home. He’s home to me.”

# 106. Honey YES, I am a grown ass woman. Furthermore, I am a college grad (Go Gram!) and I have a masters in International Management, so I think you should take your own advice and get back to school. First of all yes I see that you stated positive things about her, why not just leave it at that, but you post your negativety before your positve. I could understand if the critism wa constructive, but it wasn’t it was just dissing her because you felt like it. You are predicting ill will on the girl and her boyfriend and for what, since that is your opinion, what are you basing it on? I said boyfriend because that is what she called him. Since you understand that I am intitled to my opinion, you can also understand I can post whatever I feel whether i’m wrong or right just like you making these unfound comments about this lady. So because I disagree with you it warrants you to right this ridiculous attack comment?
So, if you are a “grown ass woman” that shit REALLY speak volumes!! I can’t wish you a nice day because apparently at 12:00 this afternoon yours became screwed up! CLEO.

I still haven’t made it through all of the comments yet. But what I have read so far epitomizes how ppl act when they are jealous and very intimidated.
Jennifer Holiday said that someone she really admired walked up on her and told her, her voice was too heavy and loud and that she would never make it. She was initially hurt but she later realized that this celeb (that she admired) was really jealous and intimidated.
People on here are trying to tell J-Hud what genre she should stick with, she didn’t act well, she’s fat, blah, blah, blah. ALL of the ppl who have said mean-spirited things about J-Hud needs to practice what yall preach.
Let’s see, she is bound to get an Oscar and a Grammy is inevitable. #74…I totally agree with the “BROADWAY” statement. J-Hud, go work that BROADWAY stage so you will not only have an Oscar and a Grammy, but YOU will be the FIRST African American female to win ALL three.
BESIDES, THERE’S NO ONE ELSE OUT THERE THAT HAS A CHANCE IN HELL. Hello, you are J-Hud! Oprah said this is YOUR year. #57 did you go deaf when Oprah said that?

I am very happy to read this.
I dont know about anyone else, but when she won the Golden Globe, I cried with her.
I felt like I had actually won myself.
that’s how happy I was. I celebrated in her victory as if it was my own.
Not many singers have done that in my life. Mary J Blige, Lauryn Hill, Billy Holiday,Tracey Chapman, Janis Joplin have all moved my spirit.
Jennifer has “IT”
most people call it the favor of GOD.
I agree
She will be loved and embraced by anyone who sees her for what she truly is.
She will inspire many young females just like her.
As far as the girl who just couldnt help herself and started predicting the woman’s demise, it was so sad to read you type that.
Everything you predicted her to do is everything that you will personally do in your life.
If you keep that hateful jealous evil theme in your predictions, you will be doing your life an extreme diservice.
I’m very happy that we have Jennifer Hudson. It doesnt even matter that she’s not the typical physical representation. She doesnt need to be bc she is TALENTED, RELEVANT, POSIITIVE and BLESSED.
Nothing can bring her down anyway.

You people on here are CRAZY! The same people on here praising Jennifer are the same people bashing Beyonce. Two wrongs don’t make a right. They are not is the same league. And for the breathe of fresh air comment aboout jennifer where have you’ll been? jill Scott, kelly Price, Angie Stone, MJB and Fantasia. Hell even Joss Stone or Norah Jones are Soul Singers. Jennifer is good in the movie but her version of the song (the only reason why she was nominated) was not as good as the ORIGINAL. Lots of poeple have sang the hell out of the song even the 16 year old girl that audition for american idol season 6 a couple of weeks ago did a hell of a job. And my same league comment is base on experience. Beyonce and jennifer are both the same age but beyonce has been on top of her game for over 7 years and jennifer just getting a break. Nobody would even give her a change for a record deal and as for her doing interview about american idol being abusive last time i check Clive Davis signed all the contestants to his record label and they are also sign a contract for 5 or more years with american idol management too. if you wasn’t voting for jennifer on AI then why are you all jumping on the bandwagon? i use too dislike DC because they were everywhere and I always felt like it was Beyonce and the Childs anyway but now i LOVE beyonce as a fan and give her all my props. But jennifer will have to earn them. Winning awards doesn’t mean nothing. I have seen most of the movie people have won awards for and some of the movie aren’t even good. Well i’m tired of b$tching so that my 2 cents (i mean $5 bucks).

If all the so called fans voted for her on AI than maybe she would have won and some people haven’t even seen the movie. She doesn’t sound any different from when she was on AI and i watch every week from season 1 to now. If you do like jennifer than that is fine with me. Nobody would even give her a change (*and I guess you mean chance) for a record deal…” and then you said “anyway but now i LOVE beyonce as a fan and give her all my props. But jennifer will have to earn them. Winning awards doesn’t mean nothing. I have seen most of the movie people have won awards for and some of the movie aren’t even good.”
Dayum! I should have copied your whole post! But my point is, if you don’t call this bashing Jen then I don’t know what is.

167 since you want to comment and spell check then I will answer.
How am i putting Jennifer down by saying that she has to earn my fanship? Beyonce has earn my fanship (it only took 5 years for me to like her as a artist). I was putting her down to bring nobody up. She has to work harder for me and like i said getting awards don’t mean nothing to me its whatever your talent is. and she hasn’t change much since AI.

Jennifer Hudson dissing Jennifer Holiday?
Rumor has it that Jennifer “Singing on Gay Cruises for Jesus” Hudson isn’t as humble as one would expect from someone who just started receiving all of this praise no more than four months ago. In the March issue of Essence magazine, which hits newsstands February 12th, Hudson had a little chit-chat about Broadway icon, Jennifer Holliday, who played the original Effie White in the Broadway version of Dreamgirls in 1981. She philosophizes, “First off, don’t let that be the only song you’re performing. Pursue other things and don’t just limit yourself to that. I don’t intend to say, ‘Okay, I’m going to sing this song for the rest of my life, and this will be the only character that I portrayed.’ I’m Jennifer, not Effie. I’m flexible and different and have other dreams and other goals and songs to pursue.”
Is Jennifer Hudson feeling it? Isn’t it a little too early for an American Idol castaway to give advice to the woman who paved the way for there to even to be an Effie White character past the second act? In addition, while “And I Am Telling You (I’m Not Going)” is Holliday’s biggest and most popular hit, it is not her ONLY hit. Anyone who knows their female soul music of the ’80’s history knows: Holliday’s 1983 song, “I Am Love,” from her Feel My Soul album, hit number two on the US R&B charts and number 49 on the Us Hot 100 and she would also follow with “Just Let Me Wait” (#23 US R&B Charts). In 1985 Holliday garnered two other hit singles “Hard Time For Lovers” (#17 US R&B Charts, #69 US Hot 100) and “No Frills Love” (US R&B #29, #87 US Hot 100). Between 1987-1991 Holliday would have three other R&B hit singles including the #10 hit “I’m On Your Side.” Holliday is also a two-time Grammy Award winner, in 1982 for “And I Am Telling You” and 1985 for her song “Come Sunday.” Also, just as a point, charting on the R&B charts in the ’80’s wasn’t disregarded as it is today…black artists rarely got airplay on “mainstream” radio and charting on the Hot 100 was nowhere near an easy task for a black female artist. From 1996-2001 she garnered three number one dance hits. Of course no one can forget her appearances on the hit Fox series Alley McBeal and she even performed for President Bill Clinton in 1997. Does this sound like the work of a woman who only let one song be the only song she is performing”? It is her signature song, but every artist has that–what would a Tina Turner concert be without “Proud Mary”?
Many might feel as if, “Yeah, well Holliday didn’t match the success of ‘And I Am Telling You’,” while that is true it is ridiculous to say she didn’t pursue others things and limited herself. Holliday’s career fell victim to the music industry like several of the great soul R&B divas of the ’80’s such as Regina Belle, Phyllis Hyman and many others. Regina Belle’s biggest hit was “Baby Come To Me” but many people (at least in the black community) know her for classics like, “If I Could” and “Make It Like It Was.” Phyllis Hyman— an amazing singer who came from Broadway and was battered and abused by the music industry is probably best known for “Meet Me On the Moon”, but her catalogue in the black community is huge (”Old Friend”, “Living In Confusion”, “Don’t Wanna Change The World”, etc.) If you ask the average person (not rooted in urban) whose name they recognize outside of Hyman, Belle, and Holliday—I think most people would say Holliday. This is not to say Holliday has had a plush career, there are rumors of her attitude (I have know idea if they are true) when working with people, but one must keep in mind—the music industry for great black female singers of the 1980’s was incredibly tough, vicious and cut throat. Belle, Holliday, Hyman and so many others paved the way for artists like Jennifer Hudson. If Hudson could pay homage to Florence Ballard in her Golden Globes acceptance speech is to too much to pay homage to Jennifer Holliday? Most importantly, how can Hudson make such an assessment about Holliday when she hasn’t even released an album or had a hit single?
Many might think, well, this is pop culture fluff. It is pop culture, but homage is paramount. I do think there is something to be said about paying respect to those before you especially for a Broadway play like Dreamgirls that completely changed Broadway and black theater. Without Holliday the role of Effie White wouldn’t have been the main character. I am somewhat shocked how the creators of the film version of Dreamgirls have treated Holliday. Jennifer Holliday, Diana Ross and Smokey Robinson have all spoken out against the film because once again the Hollywood machine is profiting off the backs of people who have paved the way while they get no recognition, respect or royalties…I mean, honestly and truly, the way they robbed Diana Ross’ story was uncanny. Therefore, for Hudson to babble about Holliday is deeply disappointing. For all we know history might viciously repeat itself with Jennifer Hudson…it is already starting, the similarities with their names, winning awards and outshining the rest of the cast. The difference is, while Hudson can sing, she is not a mucus membrane of a singer or an actress as Jennifer Holliday. The music industry is even more cut-throat now so I am looking forward to seeing where Hudson’s “flexible and different” dreams will go—especially considering she STILL has not sung “And I Am Telling You” live!
