JENNIFER HUDSON COVERS VOGUE
Tuesday, February 13, 2007

I’m sure you’ve all heard the rumor that J.hud was covering Vogue, well here is the proof. 2007’s IT girl, covers the “Power Issue” of the popular fashion magazine, and the photos were taken at the legendary Apollo Theater in Harlem by Annie Leibovitz. I have to give her props for being one of the few “big” girls to cover this magazine, that is definitely a hard feat to accomplish…
BUT….
Why did they pick that photo as the cover? That was messed up! Not one of these pictures are flattering. WTF was Annie Leibovitz smoking that day?

U know they irratate me how they try to advertise us in a unflattering way, now u know that girl takes better pictures than that.. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know they had to be more appealing shots in her photo shoot to choose from and they select the one(s) that make her (& black people as a whole) look not so attractive, when that’s clearly not the case.. They need to stop, cause we have peeped their strategy and it’s getting so old and boring now..

Black people stop the friggin complaining and analyzing a magazine cover. If they wanted Beyonce on the cover she would’ve EARNED it honestly and not thru the muscle of her rogue pappy.
Go analyze the Katrina situation, poor education, and lack of health care for our people NOT J Hudson who’s blessed beyond her dreams at the moment. So what it reads our Biggest Cover Ever! Do you really think J Hud cares? Stop complaining about foolishness and got off your arses and complain about what really matters in the community!!!
Go J Hudson! Don’t worry about these fools. They’re gonna love you anyway! Blessings runneth over. The cover is a historical. The first AA female SANGER to grace the cover!

I am real mad about that cover! I’m glad she’s on there, but why do they have her looking like a girl who TELLS people she’s a model and then went out and had her mama’s best friend’s, cousin who has a camera, take some pictures.
They were wrong as hell for that, if ANYBODY knows a beautiful picture, it’s Vogue magazine - and you can’t tell me that with all of beautiful pictures I’ve seen of this girl - even when she wasn’t even TRYING (i.e; on the red carpet) that this is the best photo they found to put on the cover.

I’m not agreeing with the cover so much, but I do like the other two photos. I hope they have more photos of her in the magazine because I want to see more of her. And to the person that said, “Black people stop complaining”…nobody is not complaining…its just that people feel as though that whoever took the photo of her on the cover could of had Hudson pose different. They should of had her do a more sexier pose. And being fans…we have every right to state our opinions. If we don’t like the fucking cover than we don’t like it, but that doesn’t mean we don’t like J-Hud. But regardless of how I feel about the cover, I am still going to support her and buy it. You never know it might have more photos in there. I hope so.

People keeps asking, “why are yall overanalyzing?” If you think we’re overanalyzing, that’s fine; it’s your opinion, and you’re entitiled to it. The main reason I have problems with these pictures, is that for the first time (in a long time) there’s finally have a young, beautiful, full-figured woman on the cover of a major magazine. Instead of posting glamorous pictures (like they would have done for any other model), they trivialize and almost seem to mock Jennifer’s beauty. Yeah, I know, at least she’s on the cover, but it would have been nice if they could shown Jennifer’s true beauty. Just my opinion guys. Don’t start bashing me.

You hit the nail on the head! I was thinking the same thing. They always have black folks with their mouths all open and shit looking bizarre on the cover of magazines that don’t typically have black women on them but will have someone like Nicole Kidman striking a subtle pose…mouth closed and all.
I’m surprised they didn’t do a pic of her standing by a grill cooking chicken or getting her nails done.

Now all she needs is someone to help her speak during her interviews and she will be fine. She is constantly bumbling and babbling on, it makes her come across as being very unsophisticated. I am always a little afraid when she opens her mouth because she has no grace, it is as if she is clueless. She is just a tad rough around the edges.
Neither here nor there in terms of being a fan, but I must say I think it must be hard for Beyonce to work her whole life and in one swoop a Newbie comes along and gets everything Beyonce has worked for. It can’t be easy, but I will say this….I can’t help but feel like while it is true J has lots of talent…..Hollywood is looking for a fresh face. Beyonce just overexposed herself too much and J’s timing was right. Hollywood loves an underdog story, ungly duckling to swan story. I kinda think they are using J for the moment and probably next year around this time, the question will be Jennifer Who? Folks over there are very fickle despite the fact that they are the ones who worship and overexpose you…..they love you love you, next thing you know….you are yesterday’s news. Looks at the chicks from Sex and the City, or shit even Desperate Housewives is losing its appeal (except Eva Longoria for the time being). That’s why you have to ride the wave when you can.

Y’all can throw stuff at my fonts if you want too, but I think the J-Hud hypoe is overrated. I think it is a result of Beyonce overload and people were just looking for somethingelse to latch onto. I think she hollered her way through the movie and I doubt that I’d want to listen to an entire cd that sounded like that. She’s cool and a departure from the cookie cutter model pretty half crooners that we’re used too, but let’s not get it confused…. Too much of a good thing is stil too much.

I think the pictures are very editorial. Leibovitz is known for taking very advant garde photos, so I wouldn’t expect it to look like your average glamour shot.

I am so happy she is on the cover, but I feel as though these pictures were chosen out of spite. Why must the Black woman have her mouth open as if to suggest she is only good for singing, eating and other oral feats?
Why could these pictures not be more demure and refined? It looks as though they wanted to portray a caricature of what an “essential” Black woman is; open mouthed and gossiping. Jolly, jolly fry my chicken right. Have we reverted to Aunt Jemima’s early days b4 she ditched the headdress and threw on some pearls. And because she is Black (and everyone must know she is Black) the session had to be shot at the Apollo theatre- not that there is anything wrong with that- but in what context was this done.
She is on the cover, but she is imprisoned on the cover as well. So while this is a step forward for Black women and a body image obsessed racist industry such as fashion (and VOGUE)- it is also a step in the wrong direction.
BTW, what designer is she wearing cause I cannot immediately identify those clothes from any runway. Could that red dress be couture?

Vexxed–If you ever heard Jen on interviews when asked about what sound her CD will be, you would have known that in the movie that was EFFIE WHITE singing NOT JHUD herself..She says she loves to sing less LOUD, unlike EFFIE. So it will be more along the AI sound mixed with a little Jennifer style singing and some now R&B. She said it will sound nothing like Dreamgirls–don’t mean to be rude but people cannot seem to differ between character and reality. But you stick up for Bey when people say she sounded horrible in the movie and she was too lite. You’d be the first to say “oh that’s how Deena’s character is. Well the same can be said about JHud.
About the pictures, they could have chose better one’s. Im hoping this is not the final copy and they just want you to be surprised. But even if it is not, Im still buying it because it is a collectors item..

Annie Leibovitz likes to capture a certain emotion and not necessary a look (she’s an artist). Jennifer could look better on the cover of Vogue. However, Jennifer does look “CONFIDENT”, “RADIANT” and “I’m having the last LAUGH” look and I’m sure that’s why Annie took this picture of Jennifer. It’s a political statement that Jennifer and Annie are making not to mention VOGUE.

My only question is…WHY is there a need to EVEN bring up Beyonce in this? Has Beyonce expressed some interest in being on the cover of Vogue? I mean, why do ya’ll care so much about what SHE is thinking or feeling if you hate her so much? I am no STAN or anything, but I just get sick of black people being ignorant. Both Beyonce AND J Hud are doing their thing in their own way. Why can’t we support both of these beautiful, hard-working black women? Why is it that not even Black America will allow more than one black female to shine? Is there some rule somewhere that states we can only have one hot black girl in the media at any given time? Gosh, give me a break people. Congratulations to Jennifer Hudson!

# 90: VOGUE is not making any political statement other than the fact that they know they need a new formula.
In the contemporary, online blogs and internet mediums inundate people with so much celebrity news and fashion. Hence, traditional print mediums such as VOGUE cannot keep up and they know it. By the time magazines come to print all the information is usually old news. So they have to find inventive and relatively new ways to make people go out and buy that magazine.
Throwing in a non-traditional face is always an easy way to dust off your laurels. In essence, they needed JHud as much as she needed them. However, the political statement stops there. They are still racist- they do not know about or care about Black people (save for Andre Leon T. and few others, but that is complicated in and of itself). Some things never change.

OYSTER…It becomes even more evident every time I see Jennifer that she could use a little softening up. She needs to tone it down a notch or two and keep her hands to her sides when she speaks. Also, what does Beyonce working hard have to do with a VOGUE cover? It is just a cover a magazine. It isn’t an Oscar. BTW, Hollywood is always looking for a “fresh face”. This is nothing new. Next year we’ll be talking about someone else-same time, same place.
FANFAN#1…I agree. The pictures look amateurish. I think she needs to cover up a little. That dress she wore at the SAG awards looked very Maria Careyish IMO. With jugs like that she needs to wear proper better support.

I’d have to agree with the other posters…Y’all check out the pics they did for Angelina Jolie http://www.style.com/vogu...ure/121206/…totally different level. They completely dropped the ball with Hudson, and it looks intentional.
Now it’s time to do something; we cannot just complain to ourselves when this type of stuff goes down. The Vogue editors need to be aware that black women patronize their magazine and will be more likely to buy the mag when there are flattering representations of us.
This spread definately is not. Hudson is a beautiful woman who deserves to looks as beautiful as all the white women they put on their covers.
Email them here at talkingback@vogue.com. Flood their mailboxes!!! The least they can do is post some great shots on the website.

You’ve just got to cheer her on! I’m very proud of her and I actually like of like the cover shot. Sometimes the “super-sexy pout” pose gets old. I think this one is actually more Jennifer. I don’t particularly care for the one with silver dress though. I’m buying it and I’m so glad she’s doing well.

Why are we always pitting black people, particularly black women against each other? You all should read the “Willie Lynch Letter” if you’ve never read it. Anyways, both JHud and Beyonce are great in their own way. Both talented, beautiful, black women. They don’t need to be pitted against each other, they’re plenty out there for them to both get their props. Stop hatin’ and get a life!!!

Instead of reading negatively into the cover (which we do have a right to considering the quality of the photos of this beautiful, big, African American woman) try to think of the cover as Jen mocking her haters! Her pose screams “Ha!!! Look at me now haters! On the covers of Vogue and I am fierce!!!”
I love it! If this is the concept then it works!

I’ma throw a lil rumor in there just to be messy as hell cause I never do..
It’s a conspiracy!!! Matthew Knowles told the people at Vogue that Jennifer better NOT get a Vogue cover before HIS baby because Jennifer is not a star yet, Beyonce is and will sell MILLIONS of magazines for them and if they don’t do a Beyonce cover, she won’t ever do an INTERVIEW, let alone a cover for them - and the peeps at Vogue said, “Matthew, it’s all politics… but here’s what we’ll do, Jen is definitely gonna be on the cover, the powers that be sent a message down because he owes some favors to some people, but just wait until you see it… it should make you very happy, and when Beyonce’ graces our cover, the one with Jennifer will be holding up the legs on a unleveled coffee table.”
And with that, Matthew took his briefcase and whistled “You must not know bout me…” all the way to the elevator.

HERE WE GO!!! ONCE AGAIN, INSTEAD OF CELEBRATING WHAT IS TAKING PLACE HERE, BLACK FOLKS ARE BASHING!!! COULD THE PICS HAVE BEEN BETTER? YES. BUT ARE THEY UGLY AND PORTRAYING HER IN A NEGATIVE WAY? NO!!! THIS IS A CONCEPT ISSUE WHICH IS NOT MEANT TO BE ALL GLAMOUROUS AND PRETTY SHOTS PEOPLE!!! THEY WERE MEANT TO BE TAKEN AS THEY WERE!!! SHOWING HER AS IF SHE WAS PERFORMING!! WHEN YOU ARE SINGING, YOU ARE NOT STANDING THERE TRYING TO LOOK PRETTY. (UNLESS YOUR BEYONCE! LOL!) THESE ARE THE SAME PEOPLE THAT STYLED HER FOR THE GOLDEN GLOBES AND SHE LOOKED GORGEOUS IN THAT CUSTOM MADE VERA WANG GOWN!!! THEY ARE ALSO STYLING HER FOR THE OSCARS SO I AM NOT UNDERSTANDING WHY YOU ALL ARE SAYING SHE WAS SET UP. ALSO, SHE IS THE FIRST FULL FIGURED WOMAN TO EVER GRACE THE COVER OF VOGUE IN THE HISTORY OF THE MAG AND ONLY THE 4TH BLACK WOMAN!!! (HALLE, OPRAH - WHO THEY MADE LOSE WEIGHT AND SOME MODEL FROM THE SEVENTIES) NOT EVEN TYRA,IMAN OR NAOMI HAVE BEEN PUT ON THE COVER OF AMERICAN VOGUE SO INSTEAD OF US COMPLAINING ABOUT HOW THE PICTURES COULD HAVE BEEN BETTER, WE SHOULD BE CELEBRATING THIS YOUNG, BLACK, SUCCESSFUL, BEAUTIFUL WOMAN!!!! I SWEAR! AND WE WONDER WHY WHITE PEOPLE ARE MORE SUCESSFUL!!! AT LEAST THEY TEND TO NOT BELITTLE EACH OTHER AND THEY STAND IN SOLIDARITY. BLACK FOLKS IF WE WANT TO SUCCEED, WE REALLY NEED TO STOP HATING ON EACH OTHER!!! THERE, I AM OFF MY SOAP BOX! LOL!

LOL oh no u didnt!
The cover looks cheasy an like it could be a cover for jet lol! I am proud of jennifer hudson (chicago where u at?) but I think all of this success is un-eared and too soon. Trust me she is gonna have the same problems beyonce is having if she keeps getting all these magazine covers etc. I mean she has done ONE movie and was on american idol (lost)…now she is on the cover of vogue and being called the next big thing in hollywood! I’d rather have raven simone or kylla pratt (sp?) on the cover because they actually earned a place in hollywood, instead of jen who is getting everything handed to her.
I have nothing against jen talent wise because she was great in dreamgirls, but lets not jump the boat….she could end up being a one trick pony acting wise and then everyone is gonna act like they dont even know her.

Before everyone continues with their conspiracy theories about why Jen got the cover over Beyonce, I think you should visit http://www.vogue.com and check out what Andre Leon Talley has to say about her.
The reason she got on the cover is because ALT genuinely likes her and appreciates her talent. He even said that he thinks that she doesn’t even realize the affect that she has had on people. So, in this case, she is being recognized for who she is and Beyonce has nothing to do with it.
I think it’s wonderful that he and Anna Wintour respected her enough to not only put her on the cover but also get the photographer who is considered the best celebrity photographer to shoot her.

at #118…DO NOT compare J-hud to those hoes Britney, Lohan, and Paris Hilton…white folks talk ish about those three b/c they act like trash. When has J-Hud walked out a limo with no panties on? created a sex tape? gone to rehab? never, never, and never.
And, btw, white folks DO stick together when it comes to protecting the ppl they like and try to get us to sympathize with them i.e. Anna Nicole Smith, who is now supposed to be some icon, or Jennifer Anniston, this Miss America chick, Amber Frye, the runaway bride, and every white woman in history who claimed a black man raped her.
The same way, we are sticking up for J-Hud b/c we like and respect her.

I dont see anything wrong with the pics.
But we as a people like to focus on the negative.
She is one of the only women of color EVER to grace the cover of Vogue yet we are focusing on the negative things.
The pics show Hudson’s personality. She isnt a sex symbol. She is a young and vibrant woman but her shine isnt about her body but her talent. I love the joy and power in the pic.
As for bringing up Beyonce, that’s inevitable. But I’m sure she doesnt care. I mean how many magazine covers has she done…It’s ridiculous to think JHud is replacing her.
They both can co-exist.
Their complexions, voices, bodies, personalities, and backgrounds, and presence on the stage are totally different but equally awesome. So why compare them anyway?
Stupid…

Let’s be real ya’ll. Beyoncé ain’t scared of J Hud. B has 10 Grammy’s. She is music royalty. After all this DreamGirls hype dies down, J Hud will be in the “where are they now” files? Beyonce has the “it” factor, Jennifer does not. I will admit that Jennifer’s performance was amazing. However, one performance alone will not save your carrer. I’m a huge Beyoncé fan, & I hate it when she is compared to every other chick in the game. Let’s be real people, can’t nobody touch B. NO ONE! There have been a lot of pretenders & other wanna-B’s, that have come. But B has shut them all down. Jennifer Hudson is no exception. After the Oscars her 15 minutes will be up, and then everyone will see who the real number 1 chick in the game is. Not some amateur pretender who can’t control her own voice.
And before anyone else says anything, just remember who has the number 1 single in the country for the past 10 weeks. Not J Hud.

OMG and LOL — I got no further than #6 “Damn, she covering the whole front cover, and it look like she about to eat the words on the page.” You ain’t right, DATDUDE.
These pics are not the greatest, Jen has taken much better pics in the past. I don’t happen to think she’s a gorgeous girl (unlike most, I wasn’t that impressed with the Esesnce cover), but look how beautiful Oprah’s pics were, and she’s not gorgeous either.
I think Anna Wintour let Andre Leon Talley talk her into Jen’s cover and then said, “I’ll show them.” She then went ahead and picked the most unflattering pics. That Devil definitely Wears Prada.
This is also what happens when the hype machine carries you and you’re not really ready for and haven’t necessarily EARNED all the accolades, so you don’t have the support system you need to make sure you always put your best foot forward.
I hope the cover sells. I’m gonna get it just because they don’t put sistas on there often.

What I’m worried about with her is how Hollywood is building her up high to tear her down so she better have fun with it now cause I see a train wreck happening soon.
Look at how everyone got tired of Beyonce come on you can’t believe she’s getting all this attention because she deserves it I saw the movie it was okay but Jennifer Holiday set the bar pretty high and all she had to do was come pretty close to the original. Congrats to Jennifer Hudson getting the front cover of Vogue. Buuuuutttt… that front cover is so DRY! I know loads of you are saying ‘oh she’s got the cover, so we should be happy.’ But what’s the point of getting the limelight if it DOESN’T SHOW YOU AT YOUR BEST?
I don’t think it’s a racial thing, more of a size thing. Considering how incredible Angelina Jolie’s pics were (WOW!), Vogue could’ve done a better job. But b/c she didn’t do an Oprah (why did she lose all that weight? She could BUY Vogue if she wanted!!) they deliberately gave her unflattering photos.

Its good to see black women “period” in entertainment doing their thing” ! I just wish that they would cease with all the backbiting, cattyiness and envy . Everyone has their time to shine.Right now its hers. The big hype with Jennifer Hudson is that shes by hollwood terms a NOBODY WHO BECAME SOMEBODY overnight.
I mean she competed on American Idol, a reality “talent show ” and even made to be a part of the final 7 I think! However she did NOT win. After her American Idol loss ,most people forgot about her, and didnt hear much from her. She auditions for and lands role of Effie in Dream Girls. She plays the role of a singer done wrong by the industry, hergroup mates, manager, etc and she still comes on in top! There is always a certain victory in being labeled teh “undergod” and coming out on top! People feel for her role, and they loved her in the movie. She could always sing, but it took her getting this Dream girls role , for someone to actually Offer her a recording contract! “Clive Davis is smart and a very good judge of talent though ,always has been” . This movie was supposed to be Beyonces big breakout movie, that secured her place in acting, but it turned out to be the introduction of a new star. The hype with Jennifer Hudson is that prior to doign Dream Girls she had never acted ,not on tv, the movies, her room, lol nowhere .She was not an established actress, nor was she an established singer! She didnt have a record deal, only her experince on American idol, and singign on a Disnet Cruis ship and her family funeral parlor for funerals. Yet she managed to get a co starring role along side other already well seasoned ,experienced ,respected actor/songers(Beyonce, Eddie Murphey,Jaime Fox) ! She managed to capture the hearts and support of people everywhere because shes a newcomer, and sang and acted really well. She was the least experienced , but held her own, even going on to win both a Golden Globe, and SAG award and to be nominated for an Oscar for her role. She has to feel like shes dreaming. There are well respected and experienced actresses and actors who have never won SAG and Golden Globe awards. People are amazed at this real life rag to riches story.

I know I’m buying that Vogue magazine. Bout time another sista is on the cover. I love Jen and she looks FAB. I’m with #113 I’m sick of all that complaning and not celebrating. Alot of white woman pose exacty like this too you know. Now I do agree they could of did better photos of her. But it’s done so.
Any why in the hell are ya’ll making a dispute over her and beyonce. One has the right to shine as much as the other. Jennifer might be hollywoods next top actress, beyonce a singer. Are ya’ll trying to say that there’s not enough room for two black female stars? If theres room for every white female stars then it should be alot of room for every back female actress, singer or model.

If Jennifer is a nobody and won’t be here tomorrow, why waste a minute talking about her? Obviously she got you a little shook if you have to tear her down. I mean, that IS what you all say when someone is “hating” on Beyonce, right? I’m convinced some of these posters are just saying silly stuff to stir the post up because no one can honestly be that obsessed. Kill the comparison shit. It’s getting old. Beyonce and Jennifer have no beef so stop trying to create something out of nothing.

I hear alot of people in general say that they are tired of Beyonce…but I get the feeling that alot of people in Hollywood are over her as well..and who better for them to replace her with than the so-to-speak chubby, frumpy, American Idol chick that’s starring beside her in Dreamgirls…They had this planned from the get go…and then they go and top it all off by offering her the cover of Vogue…i guess beyonce and daddy knowles plan to bombard the public with beyonce’s presence has backfired. It was a dumb plan to begin with cause in the end all of you is a bunch of people routing for you to fail just so you can get the hell outta everyone’s face for a second. It is overload and overkill. Now they are ushering in Jennifer Hudson. Bye Beyonce. But this chick wont go without a fight. Good luck with that.

To whoever said Jen is getting all she can out of her 15 minutes of fame: a Golden Globe, Oscar nomination, and Vogue cover do not equal 15 minutes. Those are major accomplishments that some people strive to obtain for YEARS and still never achieve. Recognize. That’s not 15 minutes, those are the hallmarks of staying power. Hudson just happens to be blessed enough to have achieved them at the beginning of her career rather than the end. Hopefully she hasn’t peaked.

134 what makes you think we cannot protest about this cover AND protest about deeper social issues? emailing Vogue takes 2 minutes out my day–that is surely not taking time out of my life to deal with larger problems.
any time ANYthing offends me, I will protest it. As Black people, we have to understand that any injustice of any sort should be fought.
mostly, it is the principle of the matter–stereotypical images of black women are perpetuated throughout the media; and I’m NOT accepting a VOGUE handout and be pleased with any ol’ picture. J-Hud has taken gorgeous photos that are straight up candids. What are they really tryna do? They need to display her as beautifully as they do anyone else and it is not okay say we should just be happy with it. otherwise, we’ll dismiss everything as trivial and not fight for anything. which, really, is the state of black people today.

I’m very surprised at how bad these are. Jennifer’s Giant and Essence covers were better. What’s even more surprising is that this is supposedly a high fashion magazine, and that the photographer is world renown Annie Leibowitz. Like someone said, I could have easily seen this in Vibe. And its not like Vogue does this to every black woman who has been are their cover. I remember how beautiful Oprah’s cover was. It was a big deal even when Oprah landed the cover because my mom bought it. Her pictures were very well done and I was expecting the same thing for Jennifer.

I want to respond to no. 7Qtpie1978,
As a photographer myself, I actually don’t think it’s an intentional pun to make Jennifer look bad, but I do think it’s a white perspective of how they see us. They don’t see what black people the way we see ourselves. As a child i grew up being teased by my fellow african american classmates and even my bro and sister about my “big lips”, and I’ve never really come to terms with that, yet, in this photo you can clearly see that the emphasis is on her mouth fully gaping open and showing her with a with so flattering expression. After all, Annie Liebowitz is white and she’s used to photographing white women who are paying dearly to have their lips pumped full of collagen to make them fuller. Also her pose on the piano, is a typical wafe model pose that’s commonly used in Vogue Magazine….I’ve seen many nice shots of J on these blogs so I know they could’ve done better.

I, for one am very excited about these pics, and I am not going to get into some conspiracy theory about the headlines and/or whether the pics are good enough. Anna Wintour is KNOWN for not wanting to work with women above a size four and add to the fact that only 5 Black women have graced that cover in its HISTORY! I am giving a standing ovation right now. And I will get that issue as soon as it hits stands!
And besides, every freakin Spring Fashion edition of every magazine on stands says “Our Biggest Spring Issue Ever” if you read fashion mags on the regular you’d know that that is pretty standard jargon to get people to buy the magazine. So please, don’t fret.

Jennifer has a great platform right now. I think people are envious because everything happened so fast, which is rare for a black woman in this game. She’s not a trained actress. And Dreamgirls wasn’t the best movie, but Jennifer did a wonderful job in the role.
I like the cover, it a VOGUE actress cover, it stops you at the newsstand, it stands out. Jennifer is on Essence right how, so which one would I choose to buy? The fun one, not the typical one.
And yes like someone mentioned, she’s working with Andre Leon Talley, ok that’s your reason why she’s on the cover and she the so called “it” girl. So let her have her moments and accolades. I just wish J Hud had a clear understanding of what was happening, I wish she can stand up there on Oscar night and accept her award on behalf of Diana Ross, who received nothing for Lady Sings the Blues, that’s acting!!!

And to all who say Jennifer will be forgotten when the Dreamgirls hype dies down, you can’t be sure about that. She is an Oscar-nominated actresss now, so she will definitely be getting more movie offers. If she doesn’t make it in singing she has her acting to fall back on.

Why Lawd
Tuesday, February 13, 2007 /
So many of the comments on this post are a hot ass mess.
1. J. Hud is not the third or fifth black woman to ever grace a Vogue cover. I’m reposting a link to Clay Cane featuring all (I think) the Black women who graced the cover of Vogue by themselves. http://claycane.blogspot....7/02/hudson-on-vogue.html
There are at least 13 pictures up there, some of which are only one of multiple covers. I say I’m happy she got a Vogue cover, even if she’s had better pictures.
2. J. Hud has achieved some things in the beginning of her career that others haven’t acheived after years in the business. Congratulations to her, and I’m proud of her for that. I hope that doesn’t mean her career has peaked already, she’s setting such a high bar for herself. But I support her and her ventures.
3. STFU about how Beyonce could’ve done the cover better. Bey is an established star. Jen is the new “it” girl on the scene. Why are some tearing Jen down so hard, as if she’s a huge threat to Bey’s career? If Bey is that great, then SHE’LL BE FINE!!! Damn!!! There are Bey fans, and then Bey fans that are bordering on Standom, and then Stans. Fans are more realistic about the artist they love. Someone else’s success is NOT going to take Bey’s shine. Is it that no one else is allowed to shine other than Bey right now? She is not a deity, she’s a human being. She’s doing well and she’ll be fine without others tearing down anybody else who is getting their shine on as well.
4. No matter what you think, Vogue is a big deal. So to #222 who said we need to be happier when she’s winning NAACP image awards and stuff and f*ck the oscars/golden globes/vogue…are you serious? We should be happy no matter what award she wins. That’s like saying that a woman who finally made it through a glass wall at a company and becomes the first female CEO should brush it off, but if she becomes the head of her ladies auxilliary, she should feel exhiliarated. Maybe not exactly, but I hope you see the link between the two. An accomplishment is an accomplishment. It doesn’t mean we’re waiting for the “white man” to validate us. We’re not all dancing in a proverbial minstrel show.
Overall, congrats to Jen and the huge jump start to her career.

Regardless of what you have to say about her, you in your pathetic miserable little world will never have the chance to have this opportunity. J. Hud is on the cover for a reason and she looks great and people are excited to see her coming not so much for that other girl in the movie. so get over it and I’m scared to see what the bythces look like who are hating on j.hud…next!

YEEEEH JENNIFER, You going to be the next top hollywood actress. No matter what some of these jealous ass bitches say about you. You are talented as beyonce or anybody else and you are a better actress. I love beyonce too. Nobody’s hating on her, but this is not about bey. It’s about Jen. Deal with it. I hope to see you in many more movies to come. I hope you get a Hollywood star on the walk of fame cause you damn well deserve it. I can’t stand these lame ass nobodys that just sit around in their cave hating on other folks. Just because they aint about nothing. I don’t mean to bring somebody down, but when you try tear somebody down that’s doing go for theirselves (especially a colored indivisual) that makes me madd. And by reading these comments I know it makes other people mad too.
But you know what, ya’ll this negative shit aint going to bring jennifer down. People talk about everybody, you can’t please the whole world, and why try too. Jennifer has so many fans black, white, of all races that’s supporting her. She going to get paid serious dollars and continue to shine. While some of ya’ll sitting at home watching and wishing ya’ll can have half of what she has, still trying to hustle to make a buck, but aint got shit.
You can hate if you want to, but you wouldn’t get far. Chow!

I skimmed through most of the comments after mine(#6) and I still say take her ass of the cover, i don’t even read Vogue since i’m straight, but if the cover don’t make a real man at least do a double take, remove dat shit, period. She’s a cute girl, but damn i can hear her girdle screaming from here. Ayo, at least have her tighten her shit up first, if Oprah old ass can do it, its too possible. Look like she getting her cardio at KFC right now. Get the body straight, drop some hot singles, and do the the cover right, maybe even some good nude shots, so when i walk by the magazine stands my little head turns to take a look, u feel me. Aight, cool, now let me go back to bed next to my thin ass white girlfriend.

@230. DC3BKM your such an idiot! every1 in the music business knows someone younger/better looking/more talented always takes over the place of the person before them who was the star. Take Jennifer Lopez, couple of years ago she was considered to be all that and more. now noone gives a fuck about her. Its the same with beyonce, shes overexposed herself, she always looks the same, shes always trying to be everywhere and conquer everything and not allowing any1 else to achieve success. ie being a singer isnt enough, she has to act too. thats why people are sick of her, shes nothing special. yes shes talented but some day someones gonna take her place, that person might be jhud or anyone else. people need to get over her. Congratulations to JHUD! she should demand a reshoot though

If you go to the vogue website, you will see a video commentary from Andre Leon Talley, and he is the driving force behind the J-Hud cover, he admits that he is captivated with her and her talent. He obviously talked Anna Wintour into putting J-Hud on the cover, and she agreed. Also, He helped her pick out her Golden Globe Dress, and he has already helped
her pick our her Oscar dress as well.J-Hud is very fortunate to have this talented fashionista by her side. If you look at the picture, on the website, i honestly feel it captures her larger than life personality, as if to say…”I’m here Baby! Look at me!”

I am so glad that for once the light-skinned dream-girl (no pun intended) is not getting favored over someone with real talent (J.Hud). This blog for example, kisses Beyonce’s ass, all the while knowing it could look for real talent to trump instead of someone who is going to be forgotten in 10 years. Also Beyonce’s momma should have went to fashion school instead of getting hitched to some guy for his big pay-check. Maybe then we wouldn’t have to look at her whack-ass, tacky-ass, country fashion!

Vogue Slammed For Bad Jennifer Hudson Cover Image
Submitted by frillr on Tue, 2007-02-13 18:00. Jennifer Hudson | Vogue
Vogue Magazine applauded for selecting curvaceous singer Jennifer Hudson as their March 2007 Cover girl is being slammed by fashion gossips and the African American gossip community for the disastrous image used for the Vogue Magazine March 2007 cover.
The Dreamgirls star appears on the cover of the magazine’s annual Power Issue, mouth open, fierce weave and tons of cleavage spilling all over the cover.
Hudson was shot for the publication by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz at Harlem’s Apollo Theater in New York.
Pop Black Entertainment Site Concreteloop.com writes
“Why did they pick that photo as the cover? That was messed up! Not one of these pictures are flattering. WTF was Annie Leibovitz smoking that day?”
A poster on popular Fashion Community thefashionspot.com writes
“It is terrible. It’s worse than I expected. What is she doing with her mouth? And why isn’t she looking at the camera? I think shes posed like that so that her collarbones stick out, which gives the illusion that shes ‘thin’.”
Jennifer Hudson is the first African-American singer to appear on the cover of US fashion magazine Vogue and the third African-American celebrity to grace the cover of the fashion bible.

Thanks, yes I know there have been more than 3.
I cut and pasted the story as it was written.
Most articles are written with a slant and in this case they are careful to say she “is the first African-American singer to appear on the cover of US fashion magazine Vogue and the third African-American CELEBRITY to grace the cover” -
I expect that are trying to get some leverage by suggesting that this is more significant.
It’s also a story behind the story.

Firstly I wanna start by saying that Im very proud of Jennifer’s accomplishments. How many people can say I was on a show called American Idol and worked my way up to playing as a supporting character in an Grammy award winning movie. She is a one in a million.
But…. I did dislike that picture. I not going to sit here and blame it on her, but I will blame it on the people that published the magazine with her looking like that. That wasn’t right at all.

while I do believe it is a great honor for J-hud to grace the cover of Vougue. I don’t understand why? She is only the third AA to do so ad the first AA singer. J-hud can’t hold a candle stick to the achievements of Halle berry and oprah (the other AA cover females) she aint even dropped an album yet so why this honor. i believe that both her and B are great singers. The bottom line is that if eerbody wasn’t sick of seein Beyonce all over the place no way would they have asked j-hud to do this shoot and it’s not fair to j-hud. she’s not being recognized for being herself but as a dreamgirl and a distraction from Beyonce. But yo! she do look like she Hungry on the cover. RE-TAKE pretty please

I am very proud of Jennifer and Iam glad to see her on teh cover. I think Beyonce feels that things shoukld be just given to her at this point, and is very fulkl of herself. I agree that J Hud could be a here today gone tomorrow story if she is not careful. But in the meantime get em girl!

People are just so tired of hearing about beyonce this and beyonce that. A fresh face is what jhud is and she can blow beyonce out the water. Don’t hate on jhuds fame cause she comin up and people aint tired of her.

I’m all for “Black Power”, but really, this isn’t “history”.
This is a magazine company trying to get a piece of the (quickly diminishing) pop goldmine that is Jennifer Hudson.
She isn’t being presented as a thing of beauty, class, elegance, or prestige. Which is what Vogue & being on the cover of Vogue primarily stands for.
Her entire pose is “retarded”, you can see down her dress (which doesn’t even fit), her mouth is wide open, & her hair is in disarray.
The is…
the “Over the Top!” “Biggest Spring Issue Ever”, hence the loud, overweight chick.
It’s a joke… HA HA HA
As for the supposed Beyonce/Jennifer competition…
There is none.
Only a negative idiot would attempt to not only compare, but pit the two against each other.

I saw Dreamgirls. I don’t think Jennifer Hudson deserved the oscar. Her acting was just medicre. But I guess when the press and everyone else is pumping her up, she had to win. My prediction, she is a one-trick pony. In a year she will be ‘gone’ Look at all the other women who have won oscars for supporting actress, their careers faultered. There are just a handfull of supporting actress winners who are still around. Tatum O’Neal, Anna Paquin, Teresa Wright, Shirley Jones, Mary Steenburgen, Marisa Tomimei, Mira Sorvino, Gloria Grahme, Kim Hunter, Sandy Dennis, Donna Reed, the list goes on and on, after they won best supporting, their careers, were in neutral. Never again did they do another film that generated anything. Some ended up on TV.

I thought Vogue was about fashion. Sad to see it’s turning into another gossip rag. Jennifer Hudson has barely contributed to fashion in anyway aside from being a successful full figured woman. So what? There’s millions of them. The only reason she’s on that cover is because she’s moderately famous. Why not use a plus size model who would really put that cover to good use in the industry?
By the way I’m not a Jennifer Hudson hater…I love her and think she’s incredible and talented, BUT Vogue should not be about celebrity.
