People keeps asking, “why are yall overanalyzing?” If you think we’re overanalyzing, that’s fine; it’s your opinion, and you’re entitiled to it. The main reason I have problems with these pictures, is that for the first time (in a long time) there’s finally have a young, beautiful, full-figured woman on the cover of a major magazine. Instead of posting glamorous pictures (like they would have done for any other model), they trivialize and almost seem to mock Jennifer’s beauty. Yeah, I know, at least she’s on the cover, but it would have been nice if they could shown Jennifer’s true beauty. Just my opinion guys. Don’t start bashing me.

I’m so happy for Jennifer. This is really wonderful. Only a handful of black women have grace the cover of Vogue alone. I don’t think the pictures show her complete beauty, but I’m going to focus on the positive and on the fact that she is doing big things and representing well.

They always have black folks with their mouths all open and shit looking bizarre on the cover of magazines that don’t typically have black women on them but will have someone like Nicole Kidman striking a subtle pose…mouth closed and all.

I’m surprised they didn’t do a pic of her standing by a grill cooking chicken or getting her nails done.

THAT COVER IS SCARY! Just goes to show we all have good and bad days no matter who you are!! Dang the photographer was not paying attention!!!

Now all she needs is someone to help her speak during her interviews and she will be fine. She is constantly bumbling and babbling on, it makes her come across as being very unsophisticated. I am always a little afraid when she opens her mouth because she has no grace, it is as if she is clueless. She is just a tad rough around the edges.

She’s cool and a departure from the cookie cutter model pretty half crooners that we’re used too, but let’s not get it confused…. Too much of a good thing is stil too much.

These pictures are god awful. I cannot find one good thing to say about them. With all the picture perfection techniques that they have today, I have to say that Vogue really did Jennifer a disservice with this photo shoot. These pictures are a mess!

I think the pictures are very editorial. Leibovitz is known for taking very advant garde photos, so I wouldn’t expect it to look like your average glamour shot.
I think it is fantastic that a curvy beautiful black woman is on the cover and the picture to me captures Hudson’s larger than life personality.

I am so thrilled she got the cover. Actually i read that she is the 3rd African American to grace the cover of the mag. I LOVE it, and to top it off she is not a size 2, loves it! Great Job Jennifer.

Why could these pictures not be more demure and refined? It looks as though they wanted to portray a caricature of what an “essential” Black woman is; open mouthed and gossiping. And because she is Black (and everyone must know she is Black) the session had to be shot at the Apollo theatre- not that there is anything wrong with that- but in what context was this done.

# 90: VOGUE is not making any political statement other than the fact that they know they need a new formula.

In the contemporary, online blogs and internet mediums inundate people with so much celebrity news and fashion. Hence, traditional print mediums such as VOGUE cannot keep up and they know it. By the time magazines come to print all the information is usually old news. So they have to find inventive and relatively new ways to make people go out and buy that magazine.

Throwing in a non-traditional face is always an easy way to dust off your laurels. In essence, they needed JHud as much as she needed them. However, the political statement stops there. They are still racist- they do not know about or care about Black people (save for Andre Leon T. and few others, but that is complicated in and of itself). Some things never change.

OYSTER…It becomes even more evident every time I see Jennifer that she could use a little softening up. She needs to tone it down a notch or two and keep her hands to her sides when she speaks. Also, what does Beyonce working hard have to do with a VOGUE cover? It is just a cover a magazine. It isn’t an Oscar. BTW, Hollywood is always looking for a “fresh face”. This is nothing new. The cover looks cheasy an like it could be a cover for jet lol! I am proud of jennifer hudson (chicago where u at?) but I think all of this success is un-eared and too soon. Trust me she is gonna have the same problems beyonce is having if she keeps getting all these magazine covers etc. I mean she has done ONE movie and was on american idol (lost)…now she is on the cover of vogue and being called the next big thing in hollywood! I’d rather have raven simone or kylla pratt (sp?) on the cover because they actually earned a place in hollywood, instead of jen who is getting everything handed to her.

I have nothing against jen talent wise because she was great in dreamgirls, but lets not jump the boat….she could end up being a one trick pony acting wise and then everyone is gonna act like they dont even know her.

Before everyone continues with their conspiracy theories about why Jen got the cover over Beyonce, I think you should visit http://www.vogue.com and check out what Andre Leon Talley has to say about her.

The reason she got on the cover is because ALT genuinely likes her and appreciates her talent. He even said that he thinks that she doesn’t even realize the affect that she has had on people. So, in this case, she is being recognized for who she is and Beyonce has nothing to do with it.

I think it’s wonderful that he and Anna Wintour respected her enough to not only put her on the cover but also get the photographer who is considered the best celebrity photographer to shoot her.

Please, just go and buy the magazine to show the editor of Vogue our true power…

This is also what happens when the hype machine carries you and you’re not really ready for and haven’t necessarily EARNED all the accolades, so you don’t have the support system you need to make sure you always put your best foot forward.

We should be embracing this not putting her down. No, the pictures are not glamour shots, but she is still killing the cover. Stop being so damn critical and worry about other things, like the poor educational system in black communities. Congrats to Jennifer Hudson getting the front cover of Vogue. Buuuuutttt… that front cover is so DRY! I know loads of you are saying ‘oh she’s got the cover, so we should be happy.’ But what’s the point of getting the limelight if it DOESN’T SHOW YOU AT YOUR BEST?

I don’t think it’s a racial thing, more of a size thing. Considering how incredible Angelina Jolie’s pics were (WOW!), Vogue could’ve done a better job. But b/c she didn’t do an Oprah (why did she lose all that weight? She could BUY Vogue if she wanted!!) they deliberately gave her unflattering photos.

She could always sing,but it took her getting this Dream girls role , for someone to actually Offer her a recording contract! “Clive Davis is smart and a very good judge of talent though ,always has been” . This movie was supposed to be Beyonces big breakout movie, that secured her place in acting,but it turned out to be the introduction of a new star. The hype with Jennifer Hudson is that prior to doign Dream Girls she had never acted ,not on tv, the movies, her room,lol nowhere .She was not an established actress,nor was she an established singer! She didnt have a record deal, only her experince on American idol,and singign on a Disnet Cruis ship and her family funeral parlor for funerals. Yet she managed to get a co starring role along side other already well seasoned ,experienced ,respected actor/songers(Beyonce, Eddie Murphey,Jaime Fox) ! She managed to capture the hearts and support of people everywhere because shes a newcomer,and sang and acted really well.She was the least experienced , but held her own, even going on to win both a Golden Globe,and SAG award and to be nominated for an Oscar for her role.She has to feel like shes dreaming. There are well respected and experienced actresses and actors who have never won SAG and Golden Globe awards. People are amazed at this real life rag to riches story.

As a photographer myself, I actually don’t think it’s an intentional pun to make Jennifer look bad, but I do think it’s a white perspective of how they see us. They don’t see what black people the way we see ourselves. As a child i grew up being teased by my fellow african american classmates and even my bro and sister about my “big lips”, and I’ve never really come to terms with that, yet, in this photo you can clearly see that the emphasis is on her mouth fully gaping open and showing her with a with so flattering expression. After all, Annie Liebowitz is white and she’s used to photographing white women who are paying dearly to have their lips pumped full of collagen to make them fuller. Also her pose on the piano, is a typical wafe model pose that’s commonly used in Vogue Magazine….I’ve seen many nice shots of J on these blogs so I know they could’ve done better.

Contrary to popular belief Hudson is NOT the first black singer to appear on the cover of Vogue–Mel B. from the Spice Girls graced the cover in January of 1998

Personally, I like the cover because it looks she is doing exactly what she should be doing and that is having the time of her f**king life. She looks happy. Vogue Magazine applauded for selecting curvaceous singer Jennifer Hudson as their March 2007 Cover girl is being slammed by fashion gossips and the African American gossip community for the disastrous image used for the Vogue Magazine March 2007 cover.

The Dreamgirls star appears on the cover of the magazine’s annual Power Issue, mouth open, fierce weave and tons of cleavage spilling all over the cover.

Hudson was shot for the publication by famed photographer Annie Leibovitz at Harlem’s Apollo Theater in New York.

Pop Black Entertainment Site Concreteloop.com writes

“Why did they pick that photo as the cover? That was messed up! Not one of these pictures are flattering. WTF was Annie Leibovitz smoking that day?”

A poster on popular Fashion Community thefashionspot.com writes

“It is terrible. It’s worse than I expected. What is she doing with her mouth? And why isn’t she looking at the camera? I think shes posed like that so that her collarbones stick out, which gives the illusion that shes ‘thin’.”

Most articles are written with a slant and in this case they are careful to say she “is the first African-American singer to appear on the cover of US fashion magazine Vogue and the third African-American CELEBRITY to grace the cover” -

I expect that are trying to get some leverage by suggesting that this is more significant.

It’s also a story behind the story.

i wish ppl would do there history on vogue and they will find out there are so many other vogues in other countries that blk women have graced but the american vogue only had 3 blk women…it is so easy for a blk woman to get on vogue anywhere else but america..that is why this is such a big deal for jen..

Firstly I wanna start by saying that Im very proud of Jennifer’s accomplishments. How many people can say I was on a show called American Idol and worked my way up to playing as a supporting character in an Grammy award winning movie. She is a one in a million.

But…. I did dislike that picture. I not going to sit here and blame it on her, but I will blame it on the people that published the magazine with her looking like that. That wasn’t right at all.

I got the Essence magazine with Jennifer Hudson on the cover. They made her look Beautiful. The cover and the other pages with her on it. Why would vogue do her like that.

while I do believe it is a great honor for J-hud to grace the cover of Vougue. I don’t understand why? She is only the third AA to do so ad the first AA singer. J-hud can’t hold a candle stick to the achievements of Halle berry and oprah (the other AA cover females) she aint even dropped an album yet so why this honor. i believe that both her and B are great singers. I am very proud of Jennifer and Iam glad to see her on teh cover. I think Beyonce feels that things shoukld be just given to her at this point, and is very fulkl of herself. I agree that J Hud could be a here today gone tomorrow story if she is not careful. But in the meantime get em girl!

I saw Dreamgirls. I don’t think Jennifer Hudson deserved the oscar. Her acting was just medicre. But I guess when the press and everyone else is pumping her up, she had to win. My prediction, she is a one-trick pony. In a year she will be ‘gone’ Look at all the other women who have won oscars for supporting actress, their careers faultered. There are just a handfull of supporting actress winners who are still around. Tatum O’Neal, Anna Paquin, Teresa Wright, Shirley Jones, Mary Steenburgen, Marisa Tomimei, Mira Sorvino, Gloria Grahme, Kim Hunter, Sandy Dennis, Donna Reed, the list goes on and on, after they won best supporting, their careers, were in neutral. Never again did they do another film that generated anything. Some ended up on TV.

I thought Vogue was about fashion. Sad to see it’s turning into another gossip rag. Jennifer Hudson has barely contributed to fashion in anyway aside from being a successful full figured woman. So what? There’s millions of them. The only reason she’s on that cover is because she’s moderately famous. Why not use a plus size model who would really put that cover to good use in the industry?

By the way I’m not a Jennifer Hudson hater…I love her and think she’s incredible and talented, BUT Vogue should not be about celebrity.
