JENNIFER HUDSON & FOREST WHITAKER DO IT BIG AT THE OSCARS!
Monday, February 26, 2007

After sitting through about 3 hours of pure garbage, I was elated when Jennifer Hudson and Forest Whitaker took home their Oscars. Jennifer won in the Best Supporting Actress category, while Forest Whitaker took it home in the Best Actor category. I’m a big fan of Forest and I’m glad he finally got his props from the acting world.
Here is the list of black Oscar winners from the past:
1939: Hattie McDaniel, Gone with the Wind
1963: Sidney Poitier, Lilies of the Field
1982: Louis Gossett Jr., An Officer and a Gentleman
1989: Denzel Washington, Glory
1990: Whoopi Goldberg, Ghost
1996: Cuba Gooding Jr., Jerry Maguire
2001: Halle Berry, Monster’s Ball
2001: Denzel Washington, Training Day
2004: Jamie Foxx, Ray
2004: Morgan Freeman, Million Dollar Baby
1939: Hattie McDaniel, Gone with the Wind
1963: Sidney Poitier, Lilies of the Field
1982: Louis Gossett Jr., An Officer and a Gentleman
1989: Denzel Washington, Glory

I would like to add ……..
Who the F*ck is Jennifer Hudson supporting?
Without her and Jamiefox, there is no movie.
Did they give her the supporting title just so she has a better chance at winning, or are they BSing?
Who won best actress?

Folks kill me on here.
Jennifer Hudson took down Beyonce by using the very song that was made for her. All these people who come on talking about Beyonce had the real experience. She does not have ANY experience as far as I’m concerned.
Hudson’s singing comes from the gut, much like Mary J. Blige. It’s not supposed to be cute-sounding like Beyonce’s is, and perhaps because of that — it’s much more real.
You know your star has fallen when Ellen Degeneres doesn’t even wanna mess with you — and she went to CLINT EASTWOOD instead of her. Now what is that? That shows that you are not all that and even her father had to “possibly” shut up for once and not DEMAND that her daugther get the full attention of the world.
So to Jennifer Hudson, last night was your night - cherish it.

Somebody made the comment that she didnt thank her cast, she didnt , maybe it was nerves. I like her alot but that doe eyed star struck look needs to go. She’s from Chicago not Alabama, so all that I’m so shocked and moma em nem, stop it! She knew very well what this would do to her (Dreamgirls). That performance was garbage, they all just screamed, however Anika was pretty good. I’m glad J- Hud won , but I’m sorry somebody needs to help her dress better, I’m so tried of them damn dresses with the pockets, Why cant Queen Latifah stylist help her? Her face and make-up is great. Homegirl can sing her as% off but what else? I just dont see superstar. I will go buy her CD, but I probaly wont go to a concert, or but her clothes, etc….

It is an all white academy and has always been that way. No pun intended and I don’t want to offend anyone either. When I watch these types of show when there is one race in a room. I am thinking were is the diversity within the group. I am very proud of our African American winners thus far. I was so thrilled when Jennifer and Forest won last night. They saved that part of the show for last and her performance. They must have known that they were being watch by the African American community because we had to sit through 3 hours of long dadadadada. Ellen was funny too! She was trying to get the crowd stirring and I love the bit about diversity. I wonder if a pun was intended with that line. Diversity was very sparse. I also notice how 1 openly gay person won too! Interesting how these shows go sometime. Up against 3 nominations for “Dreamgirls”. Thanks for including the list of African American winners. I didn’t even realize it was so few of my people! winning.

Beyonce was truly happy for Jennifer. Her eyes were watering for God’s sake. This thing that the media and these ignorant fans have created between those two must stop. They have nothing against each other. Let it go. Why can’t they both be successful without some idiot saying that they’re competing with each other? They’re not.

Jennifer did thank the cast and Bill Condon. Damn. People tryna find any reason to bring the girl down.
She should have worn this dress on the red carpet. That brown one was not right.
Big congrats to Forest and Jennifer. They BOTH deserved it.
I don’t understand people being upset that Jennifer won on her first movie. If she was great, like she was, why shouldn’t she win? Why should she suffer through years of not winning only to have folks say when she wins at age 50, “This was long overdue.” We should be happy that black people are finally getting their due ON TIME.

#38..I’m not sure if we heard the same song..because Jennifer did her thing on Listen. Jennifer gave that song some something it needed A STRONG VOICE….that’s why Listen didn’t win for best original song..the Oscar thought it was not a strong and powerful song. POINT MADE…BEYONCE CAN NOT SING LIVE..SHE TRIED TOO HARD TO SING THAT SONG LIKE JENNIFER AND WAS OFF KEY…

JENNIFER HUDSON IS A TRUE CINDERELLA STORY. SHE NEVER GAVE UP AND LOOK AT HER NOW. JESUS IS REAL AND SHE IS A PRIME EXAMPLE. SHE WENT FROM WORKING AT BURGER KING-TO SINGING ON CRUISE SHIPS-TO AMERICAN IDOL CAST OFF- TO DREAMGIRLS STAR- TO ACADEMY AWARD WINNER - TO NOW AN A-LIST CELEBRITY. TRUE CINDERELLA STORY.
EDDIE MURPHY WAS ROBBED OF HIS OSCAR. I WAS REALLY UPSET HE DIDN’T WIN. I TRULEY THOUGHT HE WAS GOING TO WIN. IF IT’S TRUE THAT NORBIT MAY HAVE PLAYED A PART IN HIM LOOSING, THEN THATS REALLY SAD. HE DESERVED TO WIN THE OSCAR. CONGRATS TO FORREST AND JENNIFER!

@ #38, B can try to out sing, shuck or jive if she wants…JENNIFER took home the Oscar. That’s what last night was all about. When J. Hud was giving her speech, you noticed the camera panned to B and Papa Knowles. They looked super envious!! I know Papa Knowles is salty as hell! They make me crack up. I think J. Hud winning puts to rest the conventional view of success. You can be labeled a “loser” ala American Idol and now she’s sitting on top of the world. My only fear is that she doesn’t live up to all the fan fare in her next roles, CD and other projects.

@19, Thanks for setting the record STRAIGHT. I’ve never been a stan of JHud and this overkill is literally DEVASTAING! Someone paid out the @$$ for her to receive this hype and win a globe and oscar. Her performance in Dreamgirls was “C” listed (at best). She Messed up Jennifer Holiday’s song, and I wasn’t convinced. People need to research and know what’s real and what the biz is about. Dreamgirls (the Broadway play) was written with intent and inspiration of the Supremes, namely Diana Ross (lead) and Florence Ballard (the Effie inspired character that was NOT at all a full figured woman). Her character was actually intended to die, but Holiday refused to play that role and was even upset that so much of the play was written for Deena (played by Sheryl Lee Ralph). But that was the intent, to do a movie about Diana Ross…I digress. Back to JHud, there are too many talented Black actors who have held it down FOR YEARS and were NEVER honored by receiving an Oscar. That’s why Forest was so humble and sincere b/c he truly WORKED for it. There are even white actors that aren’t as fortunate. And as far as Bey, she is still the $hit and NO ONE can take that from her. She soo bad, she inspired people to player hate on her so hard to give an American Idol reject a globe and oscar…now that’s a bad BITCH!

@66
LMAO. That is a lie.
Jennifer has had singing lessons: It’s called singing in church every Sunday.
Just like Beyonce never had traditional singing lessongs. She learned from performing early on.
This about Beyonce not having Jennifer’s range is a lie. beyonce has falsettos, can go into sopranos and low notes that Jennifer can never hit.
And Beyonce was struggling to hit any notes in the climax. She sang the climax effortlessly.
Jennifer tried to sing Listen and saying “YOU should have known” in chest voice, where as Beyonce usually hits the “you” in a pure falsetto. A falsetto Jennifer could never reach.
She also lacks Beyonce’s variety of tone. It’s the same voice with Jennifer. She just gets louder and softer. Beyonce did not need any help from Jennifer.
As I’ve said, we still have yet to see her do “And I Am Telling You” live. You know what that means: studio magic was used on her voice. That’s why she wont sing it live. Whenever a singer doesn’t sing their career making song live, when they’ve had plenty of performance oppurtunities, you know something is up.
And Clive aint worried about Jennifer one dimensional voice. He too busy fucking wit getting Whitney back out there. Trust me, Whitney is Clive Davis’ baby. As long as he obsessed with his baby, Jennifer will always get the short end of the stick.

definately not true beyonce, probably undercover beyonce haters. it’s obvious your knowledge on vocal dynamics r pretty limited. everybody knows that jhud is 1 dimensional singer, she lacks vocal control and range(pretty obvious in her parts for the listen performance).thats why fantasia ate her azz up on the aretha franklin tribute.bottomline beyonce came roaring on that like a true vocalist and took jhud to school!!!!!

#101 your absolutely right. What most don’t realize was the Deena/Diana Ross,WAS supposed to have been the focal point of the play/movie.In fact originally the whole thing was to have been centered arounf her.
However, instead of the beauty, glamour, and metoric rise to fame, instead the play/movie shone the light on the abuses, deceit, and underhandedness,of Denna’s character…hmmmm, sound familair,so naturally, like the play ppl naturally took the the dejected,fallen-from grace, character played by Effie/Florence Ballard…history just repeating itself.
…And has the Hollywood’s,moreover the ENTIRE entertainment industry’s (Clive,Whitney, incl),complete, and utter acceptance, and embracement of Jenn,as a way to spite Beyonce?! Prayer changes things,Wow!!!!

i think it’s wonderful that black actors, actressess and movies are being recognozed, but i have to be honest: i don’t think jennifer hudson’s performance in dream girls was oscar worthy. her voice is spectacular, but her acting leaves something to be desired. also, i question the dificulty in “recreating” a character. i am not hating on her, just offering my honest opinion. i wonder if her fans would feel the same way about her acting talent were she not black (and plus-sized). with that said, congrats to all the winners. my only wish is that forrest and will could have won; both gave incredible performances in their respective movies. while i preferred the last knig of scotland to the pursiut of happyness, i think will deserves recognition for his performance. it was refreshing to see an image of a positive black man again.

@ 73, well put. Beyonce is a good singer in her own right, but Jennifer is great too, if not better. I for one think it is nice to see Beyonce have some real competition. It reminds me of the days of Patti, Aretha, and the like. J-hud’s voice has that deep down soul that you feel when she delivers a song, like her belting out a song takes little to no effort.
Also, because Beyonce was struggling to compete against J-hud,whose voice clearly engulfed Beyonce’s, when Beyonce first began the song “Listen” she struggled with her pitch, but soon recovered like a pro.
I’m neither a fan or hater of beyonce’s but I can clearly see a better talent when it’s in front of me, and that better talent was J-HUD. Also, it’s refreshing to have a voice like Jennifer’s out there that can compete with the company of Chrisina Aguilera, Joss Stone, and yes even Jill scott. Beyonce, although a good singer, is not in the same company of the aforementioned women.
Beyonce, until now, is simply the most recognized, popular black singer of our generation. Her brand has been fed down our throats because there was simply nothing of substance to compare her to until now.
hey….did anybody see Beyonce and her mom on the E channel? they were interviewing people after the oscar’s. The reporter asked Tina how did Beyonce do, and she said “she killed it”…I wonder who Tina was trying to convince.

I SEE PEOPLE SAYING IT LOOKED LIKE BLACK STAR POWER, TO ME IT LOOKED LIKE BLACK STAR DIVAS ON STAGE. DON’T GET ME WRONG I LIKE ALL OF THEIR MUSIC AND RESPECT THEIR CRAFT, BUT WHYYYYYYYYYYY WERE THEY SINGING OVER EACH OTHER AND TRYING TO OUT DO EACH OTHERS SONG? BEYONCE’ TRIED TO OUT DO “LOVE YOU I DO” AND JENNIER TRIED TO OVER POWER “LISTEN”. I’M NOT UNDERSTANDING THAT. IT SEEMED AS IF IT WAS A SHOWDOWN OF WHO COULD SING THE BEST. THAT WASN’T CUTE AT ALL. DREAMGIRLS IS OVER GIRLS YOU DON’T HAVE TO BRING THE CHARACTERS TO THE STAGE CAUSE BELIEVE IT SHOWED. THEN ANIKA CAME ON STAGE LIKE A POWERHOUSE SHOWING HER TALENT. TRUE SHE CAN SING VERY WELL BUT WAS ALL THE SHOUTING NEEDED? I GUESS IF YOU AREN’T GETTING ANY SHINE YOU HAVE TO DO SOMETHING TO STAND OUT EVERY NOW AND THEN. IF YOU ASK ME IT DIDN’T SOUND GOOD TOGETHER. INDIVIDUALLY WHEN THEY SANG THEIR “OWN” SONG IT SOUNDED GREAT, BUT LET’S LEAVE THE WHOLE DREAMGIRL GROUP ON THE DREAMGIRL STAGE.

It’s all opinion. Ask Beyonce fans and they say Beyonce sang better, ask Jennifer Hudson fans and they will say Jennifer did better. Stop comparing the two. Can’t two talented black women be successful without having to compete with each other? Beyonce killed it. Jennifer killed it. So did the dude and the other girl from the movie. And let’s leave it at that. Females are so quick to hate on another female. Beyonce and Jennifer are cool with each other. Period.

Why do ya’ll keep comparing Beyonce and Jennifer? And staying that beyonce hasn’t had any competetion? I guess Alicia Keys, Ashati(?), Mary J, and the countless other that been sining are not competition right, WRONG…. Jennifer can sing but she is not the best vocalist out there and to me she has a long way to go and she already 25 not 15. Beyonce is 25 too and been in the game for over ten years and doesn’t disappoint on LIVE preformances either. Jennifer has been singing since she a little girl too so for as all yall saying that “just starting out” is CRAP. She just didn’t get any recon until AI a few years ago. beyonce was out because she has a GREAT management team behind her. Jennifer didn’t and singing on cruises and at funerals isn’t going to make you famous. Different roads different paths to stardom. But BOTH are great And Jennifer cannot touch BEYONCE is the singing period. Plus FANTASIA outsang Jennifer on AI too.

Congratulations to Forest and Jennifer!
I switched back and forth last night watching the Oscars and another movie. Little Jaden and that Abigail girl were incredibly adorable. Just too cute. Forest seems like such a humble man. He always seems so overwhelmed when he accepts his awards. Jennifer had a good acceptance speech. I liked her Golden Globes one better, but it was still heartfelt. I saw a peak at the Dreamgirls performances and I personally think Anika was the best out of Jennifer and Beyonce. The ensemble of red was pretty.

Co-sign with #22, soory but all this J-Hud hype is getting old. She did not give an Oscar worthy performance in that movie NONE OF THEM DID. Maybe a grammy because everyone knows that the reason behind the hype was for her performace of “I’m Telling You”. An Oscar is SUPPOSED to be about you ACTING ie people like Forrest and Will getting nods. They just jumped on the band wagon and gave into all the hype a Oscar Award winning Actress this chick should not be!!!!
There are REAL ACTRESS out there who have never won one (Angela Bassett, Lynn Whitfield, Diane Carol and many more) and to just GIVE this girl one for some acting that was sub-par at best is a discrace. I’m not denying that the girl can sing but the Acadmy has gotten it wrong before and they got it wrong last night.
And before you J-Hud stans start trippin THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH BEYONCE!!! Her acting stunk up the screen just as bad as Jenniffers!!!

I am sure that I am going to piss off a lot of you Beyonce fanatics but Beyonce was straining to keeping up with Jennifer’s performance of “Listen” She did well but she was straining as Jennifer performed the vocals effortlessly. Big up to Ms. Rose as well.

Good for JHud and Forest Whit.
I’m still amazed that Whoopi won an award for her awful role in Ghost.

I am happy for Jennifer and Forrest. I am more happy for Jennifer because of the journey she endured to get to here.

“It’s been amazing; it was such a wonderful night, being an African-American actor celebrating with Jennifer Hudson,” her “Dreamgirls” co-star Beyoncé gushed as she headed inside to rendezvous with this year’s Best Supporting Actress. “She brought me to tears. … It’s been a beautiful night.”
“It’s like a reunion,” said Beyoncé, who sang alongside Hudson onstage just a few hours prior. “She’s coming to the party, and I can’t wait to celebrate with her.”
That ends the conversation of a “competition”. So stop talking about it stupid people. It doesn’t exist.

I agree with #2 and 64 about Eddie Murphy. It is sad but true…I hated Norbit and it was not caliber of what was expected of an Academy Award Nominee. Eddie has been in the business long enough to know this. I am actually dissapointed in him, because he was a sure win, just as Jennifer was. Eddie’s win would had given a lot of light to Dreamgirls, since it literally shut out in every other catergory, even the four songs nominated, did not win…so Shame on Eddie. He is an extremely gifted actor, and I hope he steps his game up and produce more quality movies and have another stab at the Oscars. Congrats to all the brown people last night, not only was it “Black Star Power” in effect, but a lot of Latino/Mexican and Spanish people won last night too! Brown people are taking over slowly but surely…we just have to learn to work together! “Brown/Black Star Power”

LOL @ all of your comments. Yet and again this has turned into the J vs. B tournament. Say what you will but it is what it is.The Oscar does not go to the person who has been acting well for years. They are intended for the films and persons the Academy believes have the top achievements of the year!!! Not their career. If not JHud for the year than who? Damn shame she hasn’t been an Academy winner for a whole 24 hours and the haters have poured in by the truck loads…I love B as a musical performer but this is not about her.

The Oscar people probably gave J Hud’s and Forrest’s awards towards the end, cuz they knew everyone would likely turn off their TV’s and go to sleep after those 2 awards had been given. That was basically the only reason I stayed up…. The program seemingly went on FOREVER!!! But the Dreamgirls performance at the Oscar’s last night was awesome too.

Forest Whittaker’s speech was absolutely beautiful. Heartfelt, moving, humble… I was so happy for him because he seems such a good man.
Just goes to show that in a world where those who have no talent end up being rewarded, GENUINE talent is always recognised in the end.

Both Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce Knowles are beautiful talented African American women who are paving the way for future generations to step in the game at a higher level. They are proving that we as African American women are extremely talented and diverse in the art of performing. Think about it the Top two female who were most talked about on the red carpet wer J-Hudson and Beyonce. Everybody was waiting to see what the two women would be wearing because they both have style. Congradulations Jennifer.. All three of the dream girls did an extrodianary job performing last night… But, please both of you go and get a speach coach..
