I just watched the performance again and BEYONCE clearly OUTSUNG Jennifer’s church singing. LOL There was NO competition!!! Even with the power of Jennifer’s voice, it didn’t make it stronger than Beyonce due to the unclarity and poor diction. Beyonce’s voice rang out OVER Jennifer’s church runs. LOL

Jennifer was NOT holding back! She actually tried her HARDEST to oversing and it just didn’t work out.

Beyonce made it known that she is the better singer. Not only did she slay Jennifer, she also slayed Anika Noni Rose and the other guy up there. They were all ad libbing and Beyonce’s ad libs were more distinct and powerful than ALL of them!!

What happened was Jennifer was doing all of those church muffled screams and gospel runs while Beyonce was projecting the song to make it powerful and big. It takes more than gospel runs to turn a song. You have to know how to project your voice and excel the song. You cant just start singing crazy right from the jump. You have to carry the song to another level and emote.

I am truly impressed by Beyonce. She broke down Ms Hudson’s powerful voice with technique!

It is an all white academy and has always been that way. No pun intended and I don’t want to offend anyone either. When I watch these types of show when there is one race in a room. I am thinking were is the diversity within the group. I am very proud of our African American winners thus far. I was so thrilled when Jennifer and Forest won last night. They saved that part of the show for last and her performance. They must have known that they were being watch by the African American community because we had to sit through 3 hours of long dadadadada. Ellen was funny too! She was trying to get the crowd stirring and I love the bit about diversity. I wonder if a pun was intended with that line. Diversity was very sparse. I also notice how 1 openly gay person won too! Hud was giving her speech, you noticed the camera panned to B and Papa Knowles. They looked super envious!! I know Papa Knowles is salty as hell! They make me crack up. I think J. Hud winning puts to rest the conventional view of success. You can be labeled a “loser” ala American Idol and now she’s sitting on top of the world. My only fear is that she doesn’t live up to all the fan fare in her next roles, CD and other projects.

Congratulations to Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson. No matter what these haters say, that will always be your title. She tore it up on Listen last night. I cant say congratulations enough. All she needs now is a bomb ass album, and she will have gone further than any AI contestant.

Her performance in Dreamgirls was “C” listed (at best). She Messed up Jennifer Holiday’s song, and I wasn’t convinced. People need to research and know what’s real and what the biz is about. Dreamgirls (the Broadway play) was written with intent and inspiration of the Supremes, namely Diana Ross (lead) and Florence Ballard (the Effie inspired character that was NOT at all a full figured woman). Her character was actually intended to die, but Holiday refused to play that role and was even upset that so much of the play was written for Deena (played by Sheryl Lee Ralph). But that was the intent, to do a movie about Diana Ross…I digress. Back to JHud, there are too many talented Black actors who have held it down FOR YEARS and were NEVER honored by receiving an Oscar. That’s why Forest was so humble and sincere b/c he truly WORKED for it. There are even white actors that aren’t as fortunate. And as far as Bey, she is still the $hit and NO ONE can take that from her. She soo bad, she inspired people to player hate on her so hard to give an American Idol reject a globe and oscar…now that’s a bad BITCH!

Jennifer has had singing lessons: It’s called singing in church every Sunday.

Just like Beyonce never had traditional singing lessongs. She learned from performing early on.

This about Beyonce not having Jennifer’s range is a lie. beyonce has falsettos, can go into sopranos and low notes that Jennifer can never hit.

And Beyonce was struggling to hit any notes in the climax. She sang the climax effortlessly.

Jennifer tried to sing Listen and saying “YOU should have known” in chest voice, where as Beyonce usually hits the “you” in a pure falsetto. A falsetto Jennifer could never reach.

She also lacks Beyonce’s variety of tone. It’s the same voice with Jennifer. She just gets louder and softer. Beyonce did not need any help from Jennifer.

As I’ve said, we still have yet to see her do “And I Am Telling You” live. You know what that means: studio magic was used on her voice. That’s why she wont sing it live. Whenever a singer doesn’t sing their career making song live, when they’ve had plenty of performance oppurtunities, you know something is up.

And Clive aint worried about Jennifer one dimensional voice. He too busy fucking wit getting Whitney back out there. Trust me, Whitney is Clive Davis’ baby. As long as he obsessed with his baby, Jennifer will always get the short end of the stick.

Congrats to Forest…the win was well deserved and a long time coming. I am happy for Jennifer. While I don’t think her performance was Oscar worthy per se, I do think that she did an amazing job for her first time out. Keep it up, and she will have an excellent career.
I must comment though on the person who said that they did not know anyone Jennifer was running against…ummm Dame Judy Dench, one of the best actresses out there…I really don’t know. But in anycase congrats to them both, I was pleased with the results…

She plays it up so well. Anika looks too sexy for the event. Poor Eddie he should’ve won. Everyone else looked nice. Didn’t watch it but I’m happy that Jennifer & Forrest won.

Jennifer stated it her damn self when a reporter asked her about these stupid ass rumors. She said that there was no tension, espcially between she and Bey, so why talk? It’s not true.

i think it’s wonderful that black actors, actressess and movies are being recognozed, but i have to be honest: i don’t think jennifer hudson’s performance in dream girls was oscar worthy. her voice is spectacular, but her acting leaves something to be desired. also, i question the dificulty in “recreating” a character. i am not hating on her, just offering my honest opinion. i wonder if her fans would feel the same way about her acting talent were she not black (and plus-sized). with that said, congrats to all the winners. my only wish is that forrest and will could have won; both gave incredible performances in their respective movies. while i preferred the last knig of scotland to the pursiut of happyness, i think will deserves recognition for his performance. it was refreshing to see an image of a positive black man again.

@ 73, well put. Beyonce is a good singer in her own right, but Jennifer is great too, if not better. I for one think it is nice to see Beyonce have some real competition. It reminds me of the days of Patti, Aretha, and the like. J-hud’s voice has that deep down soul that you feel when she delivers a song, like her belting out a song takes little to no effort.

Also, because Beyonce was struggling to compete against J-hud,whose voice clearly engulfed Beyonce’s, when Beyonce first began the song “Listen” she struggled with her pitch, but soon recovered like a pro.

I’m neither a fan or hater of beyonce’s but I can clearly see a better talent when it’s in front of me, and that better talent was J-HUD. Also, it’s refreshing to have a voice like Jennifer’s out there that can compete with the company of Chrisina Aguilera, Joss Stone, and yes even Jill scott. Beyonce, although a good singer, is not in the same company of the aforementioned women.

Beyonce, until now, is simply the most recognized, popular black singer of our generation. Her brand has been fed down our throats because there was simply nothing of substance to compare her to until now.

I switched back and forth last night watching the Oscars and another movie. Little Jaden and that Abigail girl were incredibly adorable. Just too cute. Forest seems like such a humble man. He always seems so overwhelmed when he accepts his awards. Jennifer had a good acceptance speech. I liked her Golden Globes one better, but it was still heartfelt. I saw a peak at the Dreamgirls performances and I personally think Anika was the best out of Jennifer and Beyonce. The ensemble of red was pretty.

I am sure that I am going to piss off a lot of you Beyonce fanatics but Beyonce was straining to keeping up with Jennifer’s performance of “Listen” She did well but she was straining as Jennifer performed the vocals effortlessly.

I agree with #2 and 64 about Eddie Murphy. It is sad but true…I hated Norbit and it was not caliber of what was expected of an Academy Award Nominee. Eddie has been in the business long enough to know this. I am actually dissapointed in him, because he was a sure win, just as Jennifer was. Eddie’s win would had given a lot of light to Dreamgirls, since it literally shut out in every other catergory, even the four songs nominated, did not win…so Shame on Eddie. He is an extremely gifted actor, and I hope he steps his game up and produce more quality movies and have another stab at the Oscars. The Oscar people probably gave J Hud’s and Forrest’s awards towards the end, cuz they knew everyone would likely turn off their TV’s and go to sleep after those 2 awards had been given. Forest Whittaker’s speech was absolutely beautiful. Heartfelt, moving, humble… I was so happy for him because he seems such a good man.

Just goes to show that in a world where those who have no talent end up being rewarded, GENUINE talent is always recognised in the end.

Such a short list. So dad. But anywhoo the Oscars are the most boring anything to ever anything anything. I was about to pull my pubes off waiting for them to announce Jhud, Whitaker, and Scorses’ awards.

I am so happy for JHUD and Forrest Whitaker. I have always been a fan of his.

However, this is sooo sad when we as black people can’t support one another and have to focus on all the negatives. We have two beautiful black women doing the damn thing, let’s support that. Instead of picking them apart. It seems to me that this so called friction between the two has been created by others like some of the negative, hating folks here. JHUD has said that her Bey and Anika clicked from day on and that there is no tension. She also says in her Vogue article, “I am feeling Beyonce”. I hate when people say that actors/actresses/songwriters whatever got robbed. The only way that determination can be made is if you sat and watched all nominated performances/listened to all songs. Better doesnt mean louder, however, better does mean a better range, vocal quality, and the ability to maintain notes. To paraphrase Jamie Fox from the movie, her voice lacks ‘personality’. Jennifer’s voice, on the other hand, has personality to spare; from her bottom (no pun intended) and midrange to her upper-register - there’s just something about its overall tone, that for me, makes it infinity more interesting to listen to than Beyonce’s. I was happy for Jen, but her speech was ackward, and no I’m not a B fan by a long shot. But they both were trying to out sing each other and they both sounded a mess. Honestly Anika looked the best and sang the best. She had so much grace on stage. J is can sing hands down but its always so loud. On the other hand it was good to hear B sing more from the belly (depth) than the shaking high pitch she usually shares with the world.

I would first like to say that I am happy for both Jennifer and Forrest.

I know a lot of people are giving Jennifer slack because she is new to the game but I don’t think that she is any less deserving. We all know that there are other A.A. actresses who have more experience and have paid their dues in hollywood. But we also know how the game is played. Many of our A.A. actors/actresses will have very successful careers and will never win an oscar. Is this fair? No!!!!!! But this like many other social and economic issues in this country when pertaining to minorities is not fair.

The award show was based on last years performance and she was a front runner. She did a very good job in the movie and she did an equally good job last night.

As far as Beyonce is concerned I don’t feel any sympathy for her. I don’t even know why anyone would even discuss her at this point. She is a very talented, beautiful, and smart young lady. She is more than able to share the spotlight for one evening. Yesterday was not about her and I am sure she was aware of that fact.

On that note I do have to say that I was more than a little disappointed with Jennifer’s interviews after the show. I tuned into E! and they were showing the post-award shows press interviews. Watching her answer those questions was like watching a train wreck.

If I could give her or her team one word of advice it would be to have her take a few public speaking/interview skills classes. You could tell that she was ill prepared for that portion of the evening. I do understand that she was nervous but she looked like a fish out of water and extremely overwhelmed. It was very hard to watch. Her team should have better prepared her. Hopefully as her career matures and flourishes this too will get better in time.

Most are old and don’t go see the movies, they just vote on WHO THEY LIKE not who should get it. ALSO black films are not looked at or no one submits them to the academy for review. Also latinos and other are not look at greatly too. The Academy never let you know who comes in second either and most people who lose may only lose by 1 vote. Just my 50 cents.

I’ve read a lot of different opinions about Beyonce and Jennifer, I noticed that a lot of people talk about Beyonce’s jealously about Jennifer’s sudden fame, I don’t want to say the same thing, but this what I think and observered regarding their oscar performance, Jennifer Hudson is wonderful singer, you can feel the power when she sings, but she reminds me of the old school singers like Aretha Franklin, which we haven’t seen in a long time. Aretha didn’t really have the best stage presence either.

She is very humble and down to earth, and grateful, people find that refreshing, but, she is not a performer or entertainer like beyonce. Beyonce is a entertainer, her stage persence is on point, her singing ability is powerful as well, she reminds me of a R&B version of Tina Turner.

Now here are two singers, two totally different styles, they are both needed in music today. It doesn’t make any sense for people to hate on Beyonce or Jennifer and put their styles against each other, I think Beyonce let Jennifer have the spotlight at the Oscars, I don’t think she tried to out sing Jennifer Hudson, but I noticed Jennifer did a little too much with the ad-libs.

I think they both have strengths and weaknesses, what people find interesting about Jennifer is her humbleness which they don’t pick on from Beyonce, and she probably is a humble, nice person. But you can’t deny the fact that Beyonce is a music star, a entertainer, with a powerful stage presence, and a voice that is trained, with a strong technique. Jennifer Hudson not there yet. But she will be.

Why do I feel Beyonce is jealous? I just can’t understand in why I think that girl is jealous. I do think she is happy for JHud but also jealous. I mean a year ago she kept braggin about how 2006 and 2007 will be her year and how badly she wants an Oscar. She even said she hopes Dreamgirls will help her to win her Oscar. She said she will hope to get an oscar by the time she turns 30 and didnt know if it would happen but she was going to work hard. Her voice is also very unique because of her deep southern accent, equally beautiful, and loud. Beyonce’ is about 135 and Jhudd is about 200+ so I would hope that Jhudd has a bigger voice because she is a bigger GAL. If I was to hear Jhudds voice on a track, I wouldn’t be able to point out whose voice it was if I heard it. i would probably say, DAMN THAT GIRL BLOWS, but I wouldnt be able to point it out because I hear voices like hers in church all the time.

I really like J-hud, and I think that a black women winning an Oscar in Hollywood is a big direction…….However I think she won for her singing and vocal ability rather than her actual acting talent.
