MARK CURRY: LAUGHS KEPT HIM FROM SUICIDE

Thursday, February 15, 2007

mcurry.jpg
Comedian Mark Curry, who starred in the 1990s sitcom “Hangin’ with Mr. Cooper,” says that if it wasn’t for some of his comic friends he probably would have committed suicide last spring after a freak accident landed him in the hospital with second-degree burns.

Appearing on “The Montel Williams Show” set to air Thursday, Curry, 42, said he suffered burns over 18 percent of his body after a falling can of spray starch ruptured and sparked a fire in his California home.

“It was so bad … that pain was so excruciating that I just threw it out,” said Curry, recalling the moment when he woke up from a three-day, medically induced coma.

“I wanted to kill myself and, by the fourth day, I said, `I can’t do this.’ I felt less than a man. I couldn’t even look at my own body. I saw my hand with the peeling skin and threw up, and I didn’t look at myself again.”

He then decided to hoard his pain medication and commit suicide by overdosing on it, he said. But Curry, who also appeared on TV’s “Fat Actress” and “The Drew Carey Show,” said he changed his mind after talking to some funny friends, like Sinbad and Bill Cosby.

“They made me laugh, and that helped a lot,” he said.

Damn see these are the kind of stories that snap u back in to reality and make you realize what matters most. His accident could happen to your average jo. Also the fact that suicide is a major issue in america and it sad that it doesnt get talked about much. But truth of the matter is a lot of people contemplate suicide and thank god he had friends to pull him outta that zone cuz i heard once u convince yourself that life is over u do it. (had a church friend try to kill herself multiple time by slicing her writst) shit scared the hell outta me cuz she looked like she could do it again.

__________________

Most aerosol cans are under pressure and they ALL have cautions and warnings. When it fell if it was punctured it could cause a small explosion or spark, enough to spark a flame which could cause a flash fire. And the starch itself is flammable - so it could happen. Like they said it was a freak accident, but it could happen.

I was really sad for him when I first heard this story last year. Didn’t know it was as bad as wanting to commit suicide! I agree with whomever said suicide is not talked about often enough. It affects so many people.

I’m glad he chose life. We may never think we’re pretty enough, strong enough, rich enough…but it’s stories like this that puts things into perspective. Be happy for who you are and what you have.

What the fuck is his problem? Nigga, you got money and can afford any kind on plastic surgery. I would me more empathetic if it was some regular ole Joe who was was faced with this dilemma. I mean, nobody wants to have to go throught the shit but he should be thanking God he has the resources to fix hi shit. Look at him, he looks damn good, no signs of burns.

34.

Lovly6680

Thursday, February 15, 2007 /

I dont think you think about how money can solve your issues when you faced with that degree of depression. It’s a very serious illness and can kill you itself with time.

My brother was in a similiar accident in Kuwait involving his iron and a leak from his gas heater(I bet you didnt think your iron could kill you). He was badly burned and had no comestic surgery but he healed up very nicely and you could’nt tell he’s been burned all over his body. Thank God for those angels that watch over us all.

Thank God he’s doing okay. One of the funniest performances on a sitcom I’ve ever seen, is the one where Curry plays a drill sargeant at traffic school, on the Jamie Foxx Show. He is hysterically funny, and I am in tears and near convulsion.
Right on Cosby and Sinbad. I met Sinbad at the airport in L.A. He was travelling with about 15 family members and friends. I was handling his party, had everyone in hysterics. He’s a really good brother.

WOW! I am so sorry to hear that about Mark Curry. I think he is one of the most “UNDER RATED” comics around today! This man is HILARIOUS!

& Hell yeah I watched me some “Hangin’with Mr. Cooper” back in the day.

I am glad he made it through that TRAGIC ACCIDENT without having committed suicide. LAUGHTER really is MEDICINE for the SOUL. With all the folks walking around this earth on a daily basis without a sense of humor about anything, serious all the damn time, with a stick up their asses…THEY ALL need to listen to folks with stories like MARK CURRY. Its a real WAKE UP call to folks.

*Just when you think the world is crashing down on your shoulders all at once, there are people out there going through way more serious shit than you.

I applaud MARK for making it through, & keeping the faith. I have to catch that episode of MONTEL.

Plastic surgery can do so much for 2nd & 3rd DEGREE burns (regardless of how much money you may have). There are women out there who was burned in their faces with BATTERY ACID by a JEALOUS ANGRY EX BOYFRIEND/HUSBAND & no matter how many COSMETIC SURGERIES they might have undergone…it still looks bad. In those cases, I cant help but think what an sick minded individual can do to another person!

But just know that PLASTIC surgery, is not a FIX for evrey skin IMPAIRMENT. It’s limited especially when it comes to BADLY BURNED SKIN.

Yea I read about this in People Magazine last month..he said Bill Cosby talking to him really helped him the most…Now this incident is his main topic when he does stand up..the lord gave him a second chance so I hope he takes advantage of it!!!

The scarring of being burned goes way beyond the physical. It’s been almost 10 years since my accident and it still affects me. The memory alone of seeing your skin literally bubbling is scary. And the process of cleaning the burns is probably just as horrid as being burned all over again. I can see why he contemplated suicide because the pain is beyond excruciating and the limitation in movement afterwards is rough. I was only 5 when I had my accident so it wasn’t a thought for me. And as for plastic surgery, I have 2nd and 3rd degree burns on my leg and I was told by several plastic surgeons that if I were to go ahead with surgery I would only replace a scar with a scar. Mark was indeed blessed to have friends around to keep him laughing and God on his side to keep him alive.
