NORBIT COMES OUT BIG…NO PUN

Eddie Murphy in ‘Norbit’
Despite being negatively blasted by critics, Eddie Muphy’s ‘Norbit’ surprisingly opened at #1 this past weekend - racking in $34.2 million at the box office. Being the biggest opening in 2007 thus far, the film also serves as Murphy’s biggest opening in his career since ‘The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps’.
So it seems, Eddie has found a formula for box office success - and he isn’t the only one. Martin Lawrence brought in over $25 million for the “Big Momma House” franchises. Tyler Perry’s most successful film was where he played Madea the longest - “Madea’ Family Reunion” which made $63 million at box office.
Black men trolloping around in fat suits can be funny, but it is also seen as very offensive and more groups are speaking out on it. Even movie critics dubbed ‘Norbit’ as “mean-spirited” and disrepectful to African American women who were overweight.

I haven’t seen the movie and I admit, I thought it would be funny but, I definitely understand other point of views. Have you seen the movie and did you find it offensive? Do you think the “fat suit” formula is offensive to the African American women they’re portraying? Or is it just entertainment, and comedy…which is suppose to be politically incorrect, taken lightly and just humor?

Have we gone completely mad in this country? Do you people think that if you “fixed” Eddie Murphy, “fixed” the media and we changed everything to suit US (black folks. That black women would suddenly slim down, that our health would suddenly improve. That we wouldn’t eat greasy fried chicken, that men would suddenly not objectify women and treat them as “props” in music videos. That we would suddenly invest our money more wisely than buying gold and bling. IT IS EDUCATION that we need to give to our children, tht their health can be effected negatively, who do you thnk is feding these children to be huge! Not the phucking TV or POP Culture, the damn parents, they need to be educated. So for a country that is so new (I mean America is just over 500 years since Columbus) So ok we have made great in roads snce then, not enough I agree, but phucking heck why are we using Eddie Murphy as the “reason” or the person who is “setting us back” Phuck that! he helps put black actors in roles make money and creates careers. Yes somethings perpetuate stereotypes but so what?!?!?! you want freedom of speech, then accept people can do what they want and pay atention to you and yours or send a leter to Larry the Cable Guy and the blue Collar TV tour and tell them they shouldnt make fun of trailer parks and rednecks, because it is “seting them back” how dumb is that!?!? teach you and yours to be the best they can be and combat pop culture with good education. White girls have paris hilton lindsay lohan and britney running around like hoes with no underwear, baby dadies and divorcing sex tapes. And whites don’t “slay each other” like we do. In fact how many white people give a flying Phuck and are still buying US weekly just to laugh at them. LOOK AT FRIGGIN ANNA NICOLE SMITH, But you know what they do? they tell their kids “look don’t be like that you see how negative it is right?” And “remember what Miss america did? make good choices” that is all we need to do. But blacks are always complaining going back to Aunt Jemima etc, Yeah hollywood is racist but it isn’t just racist. it is every “ism” “phobic” etc Ellen Degeneres was kicked of TV for declcaring her Homosexuality, now not even a decade later, if you disagree with homosexuality you need diversity training, there’s something wrong with you, it is so widely accepted. so America just goes with the flow without moral integrity. Now I agree with Judah and some of his points about the cross dresing thing, because the quickest way to demonize or degrade a virile powerful intelligent sexual creature like a black man, is to “put some sugar in his tank”. Fucked up but true.

You have to qualify your statements or it just sounds like a high-minded monologue. I hear alot of blacks say that we need to “educate our children”. If you can say that then you should have thought out how to get that accomplished. Do you trust this educational system? You have to understand that there are caucasians of average or subaverage intellect that are able to succeed and thrive because they look out for each other. George Bush Jr. graduated from Yale, lol. The environment in the black community is so negative that a child has to have a superlative spirit to succeed. That’s like the people that say, “I love my country but we should get out of Iraq…”. Desperate to sound relevant and yet not offend anyone, in other words, saying nothing. How can anyone compare black people to anyone else when everyone else has their community and history? You will never hear East Indians, Arabs, Chinese, Africans, etc. talk about “education” or “who we need to vote for” because they have their community. They can and will count on each other. That’s how you know that when blacks talk about Obama and “Education”, that’s code for “anything but trust this nigger standing next to me…”.

Eddie Murphy is a very talented actor! I wish him nothing but success on his projects; however, this one just didn’t interest me.
A couple of friends went to see it this weekend and asked me to come. I was like, “naw, I’ll pass.” The Klumps was enough for me. I could only do so much of Madea too.
So, oh well. I’m not offended by the concept though. Shoot, it’s based on reality. PERIOD! Moving on………..

I haven’t seen this movie and I don’t plan to do so. I have seen Madea and Big Momma at a family gathering though. I have to say, in general I have a problem with men in drag. But I have a real problem with the skewed images of AA in hollywood. It’s not about being sensitive or not enjoying the ‘humor’ - it’s about the damaging effects of movies like this to our people. To make my point, I was listening to a conservative radio talk program the other day and a white dude from idaho called in to say that black people shouldn’t be so sensitive because they know (if the look deep down) that ALL black families have a loud, big, black character like that in their family. He also went on to say that white people did not complain when whites made fun of themselves in Talladega Nights.
The bad part about this is - this is the limited view many non-blacks have about blacks on a global persepctive. They do think most of us are loud, ignorant, calling ourselves n*ggers, fat, drug-dealers, pimps, rappers, in drag, with fronts, with long fingernails, chewing gum and snapping our heads, cooning and carrying on.
They (non-blacks) think it is a fantasy when we play or present ourselves as educated, professionals, with a two-parent household, common sense, manners and are articulate and in good health.
I can honestly say I don’t have anyone like the ‘fat suit’ characters in my family. I have some heavy folks in my family. But none of the women walk around in a two-piece or braless running after the menfolk in the fam. JMPOV

People, get used to it, a large number of black women ARE overweight, AND they get made fun of everyday, so dont down Eddie Murphy for making others laugh and have a good time at the movies. The movie isnt direspectful to overweight African American women, they’re disrespectful to themselves, simply by being overweight.
On the other hand I think this fat-suit thing is getting pretty old. I mean, maybe it would be better if nobody could tell that it was the same person playing the other roles, but this, that BigMomma crapp, and the other movies alike, no matter how many fake pounds and make-up artist, you can still tell who the person is playing these people. Eddie’s done this many times before and it’s just becoming stale.

Everyone is complaining about the fact that this movie is offensive to overweight African American women, and they should be. Yes the movie is probably hilarious, but at who’s expense? What I’m most upset about is how Black women are always being portrayed as the loud, sassy, controlling, male dominating mammy/sapphire character in mainstream movies. The whole fat thing just hides the fact that this movie, along with so many others, makes it seem like the Black social and family structure is upside down because the man never takes control while the woman controls everything. The White family structure is the complete opposite when portrayed in the media. It’s all a ploy to make Black people seem inferior to White people. Doesn’t anyone else see something wrong with this?

I just signed the petition. And I am glad that I did. I couldn’t have worded it better myself. It’s sad that we love to degrade one another. And more importantly, we seem to ONLY degrade one another. Aside from his family movies, which I never saw, Eddie Murphy only did Boomerang that represented Black people in a positive light. And now I’m questioning the portrayal of Strange. Eddie Murphy clearly has a problem with dark skinned Black women, who are in fact the majority of Black women. And most of us don’t have a heavy woman in our family who acts like the woman in this movie, but we do more than likely have a heavy woman who sort of looks like his portrayal. I think he is dead wrong. And people who aren’t offended should really look at the message that he is sending out.

I agree with no. 62 Judah said 100%. I saw the film before it came out and I thought it was HORRIBLE! Not a single laugh throughout the entire film. And unlike the chaarcters that Murphy played in his Nutty Professor movies, the characters in Norbit were all, repulsive and unlikable. Once again, as with those Big Momma’s House and Meada movies Hollywood castrates the black man and we’re stupid enough to go see it. And who has the last laugh? Yeah, I know “it’s just a comedy, lighten up” is the excuse you’re going to say. Personally, I think black women like these films because it degrades black men and they see it as a form of revenge against us. As for black men who like them, well they’re just brain washed slaves

there is a reason that every commercial with a Black woman in it has her overweight or speaking grammatically incorrect English, because both whites and Blacks are comfortable with the image. when was the last time you saw an overweight white woman in a commercial? it’s not going to happen, because white people aren’t comfortable seeing their women portrayed that way.

I saw the movie and honestly since I knew it’s Eddie Murphy playing three roles, I never once thought about big boned women or assumed that this is the way that they act. I don’t think anyone really did. It’s a movie, not reality and I am not looking at anyone differently because of it.I don’t look at big women anyway period we all people. You can not compare this character to Madea or to Big Momma @ all. The white people in the media comparing them don’t know & will never know what the hell they are talking about when it comes to us in any light. The only thing these characters have in common are that they are over weight. Because these men are playing these women so well is probably the cause for a lot of these folks on her hating. That to me is pure talent. As far as Tyler & Madea go, she is so real especially down here in the south. That is why Tyler is blessed the way he is. People can relate & it’s something the whole family can enjoy. And I don’t think that any black female actress could have pulled off Madea, Big Momma or Resputia the way that these talented black men have.

I haven’t seen the movie yet but I do plan on seeing it. And yes! I’m a think black sista. I’m not offended by Eddie being in a fat suit. Because truth be know if you go to a beach u do see large women not only black women but white women too in two piece bathing suits that shouldn’t be in them.
I think everybody is this world is just tooooo freaking sensitive about everything. You can’t say a damn thing nowadays without offending somebody. Whatever happened to free speech? It’s only a movie people, only a movie.
I remember back in the day when Flip Wilson played Geraldine he didn’t offend anybody and lord knows he was tooo funny. I couldn’t wait until Friday night to watch. Even on Sanford and Son Fred always called Esther ugly and we all laughed at that. So I just don’t see why everybody got their panties in a freaking wad over this movie. Eddie being a black woman in a fat suit. Get Over IT…..

Why do we continue to endorse and allow black men to tear down our race. They’re the weakest of all men. No other men of any other race so publicly degrades their women. Black men have so much self hate that they deserve a dissertation. They make so many excuses. The only thing that they’re successful at is impregnating, being violent and being consistent losers.

It is entertainment..it is entertainment… I hear that over and over again. Isn’t this the same arguement used to talk about rap. Haven’t we learned yet we need to mindful of how we put ourseleves out there in the media. Black men are seen as weak, boy-like, white women chasing deviants, while black women are seen as loud, obese, and manly. When will it stop when will we create a more balanced look at ourseleves. When will those traits listed above be balanced. For every Flava a Obama for every New York a Oprah for every Rapecha(sp?) a Jennifer Hudson or Queen Latifah. Why can’t a movie come out with Jennifer or Queen in the lead role that takes 33 million (in the first weekend) where she doesn’t have to sing be loud or fit a “ghetto” stereotype. We have Queen as a covergirl and I am very proud of that now let’s push forward more positive, beautiful, and full views of we black men and women.

I’m sorry but I am getting real tired of movies like this. Is this all Black actors can do? We need to expand ourselves and show the world that Black people are much more diverse than this.
Eddie Murphy is definitely color-struck. Almost ALL of the female lead roles in his movies have been light-skinned women, I always wondered about that.
And stop comparing this to Shallow Hal, the woman in that movie wasn’t loud, ghetto and obnoxious.
And yeah y’all can say “it’s just comedy” but trust me it runs much deeper than that.

I like you and people like you Judah because you encourage and promote critical thnking and following through the thought process. So I will say it like this.
With education I mean common sense education. Give children choices and rather than raising our children to “shut up be seen and not heard” let them grow up feeling able to and at times be rewarded for asking questions. Let our children travel outside of what they know their own comfort zone so they can see where and how oter cultures live. Because I know that other cultures (such as Japan which has a highly knowledgable hip hop community) know about us. How many posters here know who is the top rapper in Japan? Education and taking in of knowledge is importnt, it boosts self esteem. many young people don’t even vote, yet they know Bill Clinton got his dick sucked in the oval office! They have no idea of the issues etc. And WE as parents can facilitate that. We don’t want our children to be as ignorant as we were, so we must give them the opprtunities and choices we didn’t have and the ones we did. How does this relate to the discussion at hand? Education allows you to not do things simply because “my mamma did it”. Because “mamma” died of high cholesterol or blood pressure. so you eat better you find out how to. I bet you if you took a poll, a lot of over weight people who are responsible for the cooking or what people in their house eat, more times than not they are all eating the same thing.
Is this uproar over this movie even worth it, when over 60% of Americans are either overweight or obese? Did Eddie cause that or was he saying look at this bullsit. Monique came out with that fat show. So many women who are either too lazy to exercise, used to want to loose weight or know that their man would be happier with her being how they first met or just a little more toned, have now gone to the other end of the spectrum, “phuck it, i will find smeone to love me for me”. Bullshit. Weight needs to be proportionate and increases health. We are a country of excess arrogance and bad attitude. we dont care what everyone else is doing because this is where its at. Which is a real dumb attitude when we share a globe with other cultures and expect them to conform. We consume soooooo much, and as blacks we are prone to many diseases based on our health. i hope I clarified some of the things I said.

#105…are you sayin that women in general have to look good in order to keep a man happy????? ok what about vice versa? im sorry hunny but men shouldnt be so damn picky about what they want in a woman cause women are so damn gullable these days. no woman should have to change their selves to please some man. thats a downfall for women, they always taking criticism from a man or they out to please a man first for ie, if my man told me to get a breast implants, you think ima run out there and get implants because “oh my man said i need big breasts”. today, women are trained like robots just to keep a man. i shall damn will leave him if he cant love me for me, big average or skinny. that aint even right. you do want somebody whos gonna love you for you and not because of what your assets

1. IMHO, from the majority of postings on this topic (using this board as a ’sample’), it is abundantly clear that FAR too many young African Americans are intellectually, politically, and socially ignorant.
2. Therefore, a majority of us are ill-equipped to understand the modern game of life, much less navigate it successfully, or understand its ramifications. We don’t even understand the damn rules!
3. Funny thing, black folks get all surprised and pissed off…calling white college kids racists because these kids have private frat parties dressed as rappers, drug dealers, pimps, and prostitutes…where they paint their faces dark and girls wear outfits making their butts look cartoonishly huge.

first of all let me say MOST IMPORTANTLY than anything.. that movie was not PG-13 material… and there were so many adults taking kids to this movie as thought it was the Nutty Professor or Doolittle.
Eddie should have made the movie out of that chinese character he portrayed that was brilliant… but lets get to the BIGGER situation in this conversation.
This topic about plus sized african american women is not relevant. The professional women have nothing to worry about with this movie…because their lifestyle is not like this… its those unsmall, multicolored hairstyled, flaming curled up nail-having, hood women who are portrayed TO PROFECTION by eddie murphy. i will be fair and said that maybe the character is borderline overplayed as being too aggressive..and physically abusive. they hit it right on the head… from the bright colored outfits, the 4 hairstyles in 5 days, to using hood-jedi mind tricks when youre being caught getting broke off LOL… anyway…
if anyone should get a timbo in their a-crack should be marlon wayans… horrible horrible horrible… powertap my arse lol…
dont waste money going to see this it will be on dvd before the summer… lousy movies usually do…

i have not seen the movie i really don’t want to see the movie, but if the average woman is a size 14, why are they not protrayed in a romantic sense it’s always comedic and to me that’s a bigger issue. i saw shallow hal, but it had more redeemable qualities where he saw past her weight not as some comededic buffonery. the reality is there are women who look like monique, queen latifah, but they are not seen in a romantic light and whether we want to admit it or not we’re affected by what images are being potrayed what’s attractive and not. we may know women like raspucia, but what do we have to counteract that nikki parker who chased a man for 5 yrs no disrespect to monique, but that’s the images of big women that are seen. i saw phat girls and being a plus sized woman my self i thought i have to get another man from another culture to appreciate my curviness as opposed to the men who grew up with big women in their household. now to be fair i know everyone has a preference and that’s fine you should like who you like, but there are some men who are in the “fat closet” they like big women, but are scared what society and their friends have to say and images on the screen in regards to big women makes it harder. i know people say we should have to laugh at ourselves, but at whose expense? there should be a balance not always the comedic one dimensional view of big women and sometimes it’s not always funny.a

So I wonder…are the same people who are making such a big deal about “Norbit” making a deal about things that really matter. Things like the homeless, the abused, those who suffer from starvation. If you want to make noise, make noise about something that matters. This is just a movie. You saw the previews and you had an OPTION on whether or not to go and see it. It was your CHOICE, just like it was his CHOICE to make the movie. We as Americans get so caught up in the hype that we often forget to focus on the things that are important! Comedy is comedy! Just like #15 said…don’t let your own personal emotions make you take offense to the movie. I AM FAT and it is my fault not anyone else. I can’t take it personal whenever someone cracks a fat joke. It’s not realistic. It upsets me so bad that we as a people (not just blacks…but Americans) always shoot each other down. If it doesn’t appeal to you, that’s fine, but don’t knock the hustle!!! Remember all the racist material and the word “nigger” flying everywhere on the Dave Chappelle show? It was also funny but Dave has now admitted that most of that came from his WHITE writers who laughed much harder than the black cast. Eventhough Eddie may not mean any harm-don’t think the white powers aren’t already thinking that all black women are tacky, mean, overweight and oversexed. Rasputia is a modern day “mammy”. It’s time out for all that sell out bullshit.

Eddie just can’t seem to stop acting like the donkey from Shrek…which was also stereotypical and clownish.
Norbit looks like hot ass garbage. Big Momma’s House was good for a laugh. The only thing that pisses me off about the Norbit previews is that that fat woman has her belly hanging out and shit. Why is that necessary? They didn’t do that in Big Mama’s House or Madea’s.

@ alexg than i guess black america needs to get it together (i mean i we have to get it together) and i agree they do, but you can’t go through life being offended by everything, but i do understand your point.

I saw the movie Friday night and I thought it was very very funny. I am a big girl and I felt no disrespect. Those people that feel disrespected are not comfortable with themselves. You know you are fat and the people around you know you are fat because they can see it, so what is the big deal. Loose weight if it bothers you and leave the rest of us alone to enjoy.

i seriously do not get the “mammie” reference. and why should these black women roles be offensive? should movies that have drug addicts in them be considered offensive? should all of the crackheads of the nation rise up in protest? or how about movies with italian mafia characters? should all of the pizza makers of the world riot in rage? black people are always trying to holler “FOUL” yet we have the most division and negativity in our community.
madea, big momma and norbit are all figures that exist in our community, some sweet and fun matriarchs and some bigs girls that look a hot nasty mess that dress inappropriately-EVERYONE CAN IDENTIFY WITH BOTH. especially big momma and madea-and they are ENDEARING family members. the “big momma”s and “madea”s were pillars that headed families, took care of people, nurtured and loved any and everyone. so what is wrong with portraying that….and i know some big mommas that are funny as hell. are people mad cuz its comedy? even tho the chracters make jokes and play a lot, there’s usually a message in there somewhere (with madea and big momma-haven’t seen norbit)
i think black folks need to stop always TRYING to find something to jump up and protest about. we’re talking movies here-ENTERTAINMENT! but after folks get done hoopin and hollerin about this, how are they conducting themselves in their lives? do they make fun of and tear down other black women in everyday REAL life? are they themselves upstanding and positive people? everybody’s always judging the next person…but stop and look at yourself, check yourself, and order your steps!

in videos, who do you see more of? sometimes in the community, who is revered more highly? how many times have you heard “i like ‘em light skinned with long hair”? i mean for real…..art imitating LIFE

No disrespect but you made my point for me. I’m not gonna draw this out any further but you really don’t have a plan, at least nothing that has the remotest possibility of being implemented. Other cultures have always been highly aware of our creations because we’re the Most High’s chosen. Our style overwhelms everyone else. The “hip-hop scene” that is in Japan and other countries is nothing but modern day blackface (which many countries still have on their TV networks). Really, who cares who the top rapper in Japan is? Lol, are you kidding me with that shit? I don’t even give a damn who the top rapper in America is and the knowledge of who the top rapper in any country is, is the last thing that black people that pay attention are concerned with. I do remember the Prime Minister of Japan saying that the main problem in America is “the blacks” though, lol.
I get tired of black people saying that we have to “open ourselves to other cultures”. We don’t even understand our own culture yet. That sounds like, “let’s try to piece together a history and culture from other races because I’m too lazy to do research.” That’s why blacks run and fabricate “black holidays” like Kwanzaa, which have no historical or cultural relevance whatsoever.
I notice that when you start to question these enlightened negroes on their “plan”, as long as you ask piercing questions, it quickly becomes apparent that they have no plan other than to say high-minded, vain things that they hope will make other people think that they’re smart. The white man makes you give (or sell) some of yourself to him when you become exceedingly successful in his system. It’s amazing how much Eddie Murphy’s demeanor, way of speaking, and countenance have changed in the last 20 years. I honestly don’t think that he feels comfortable being funny unless he’s dressed up as something or somebody because he’s probably inwardly ashamed about what he’s had to do to get to where he’s at.

I myself have not seen the movie and I don’t think it was made to offend anyone. Im sure there is no try to read between the lines in this movie and Im sure it was probably just for comedic entertainment. I don’t think Eddie Murphy would really take part to anything to offend women or his own race for that matter. But if anyone does feel offended you could always write to the producers or something.
Holla back if you feel me

I saw Norbit and it was a good movie…people trying to make this a movie degrading overweight women are being too sensitive and thinking too hard. The role of Respusha could have been played by any woman, fat or skinny, as long as she was mean! I agree with a previous poster that said Norbit is about a man who gets pushed around, not only by an overbearing wife, but by his employer (her brothers)..after being taken advantage of his whole life he finds his balls and stands up for himself..that’s positive..thank you.

Man Judah! that hurt a little. I am black, half Jamaican and half African I understand about being black, I understand my history my roots etc. But unfortunately or fortunately I never had parents from the south, never had to deal with the migration issue from South to North, I never had to grow up in America, but I understand the oppression and the struggles of our people. all over the world. I have lived here for 11 years, LA NYC SOuth BEach and Chicago. But I do have a plan and it was too simple for complex shoulder bearing concious blacks such as yourself. I am one too. But unlike you I do give fuck about other cultures and thats where it begins. I have three children, two had the privilige to travel and live in London for a while and see how different cultures lived, not because they needed to but they saw a difference, they saw police who did’t carry guns, people who were not called overweight mammies and ridiculed on tv as much, but they also see how white’s colonialism and other europeaniztion of OUR culture, beauty has transpired. they see how other ethnic groups such as asians, the irish etc have been ostracized throughout the years. I was simply saying, if people like you and I JUDAH know this then OUR EDUCATUION OF OUR KIDS may make a difference. But if you don’t believe that then your kids and your outlook on this generation is negative and pessimistic at best. Eddie Murphy Micheal Jackson Welsey Snipes and a lot of black men who it appears have an issue with dark beautiful full black women are acting and raising kids based on their experiences. I refuse to let my kids think that this is all they have because to my concious rational thinking knowledge it isn’t.
And if knowledge truly is power, isn’t it a shame you don’t care about learning who is doing what with HIP HOP elsewhere (if HIp Hop is a culture and art form you truly love) and if not hip hop any art form period that you have an interest in, you should be aware of how it is represented around the world, or you become like the people you chastise. Undeducated at worst, or suffer from a lack of knowledge at best. Either way you are not as informed as you think you are or want to be all based on the strength of a wonderfully created phrase which seems to encompass all things when people like just what they know ” I don’t care about…….”

No, I did not find it offensive! Those overweight African American women who do find it offensive need to lose weight. The problem is not the movie, but themselves…they see themselves in the movie and recognized with it. I say, if making movies like this will stop those fat women from eating and gaining weight that is not heathly for them, then Martin and Eddie do it one more time for the BIG Fat A@! women. Lose the weight– its not heathly for you! Good job Eddie . I thought the movie was funny as hell. Its funny because I think we all can find a Raspusha somewhere at our place of business, home or may be in ourselves. Raspusha is nasty looking and Ghetto fabulous. If you identify with her than lose the damn weight and change your ways!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
