THE NEW MUSIC REVIEW

Rich Boy – Boy, Looka Here (full) – download
This song knocks, I really dig the beat. But then again, I’m not too surprised because Polow Da Don produced it, and he’s on top of his game right now. I’m randomly excited about Rich Boy’s project. He’s signed to Polow’s Zone 4 Records, which is under Interscope Records. They’re pretty good about putting out their projects, and I’m sure they’re excited, considering that Rich Boy has been doing really well in southern markets with “Throw Some D’s.” And with the remix video in the makings, there can only be more success.

Jennifer Hudson – Overjoyed (full) – download
Although I’m loving all the progression of J. Hud’s career, I’m not feeling this remake of the Stevie Wonder hit “Overjoyed.” I think more than anything, it has more to do with the production on the song, because Jennifer’s voice sounds wonderful. Her voice sounds flawless and beautiful, but there’s something about this that just doesn’t sit right with me. I’m hoping that this is just something she recorded, and doesn’t involve her album at all.

Kelly Rowland feat. Eve – Like This (full) – download
I posted this song earlier, and like I said, I was hoping that Kelly would come a little harder than this. I don’t see this as her “come back” song. It’s radio friendly, and I understand the direction she was going in, but the song just doesn’t quite do it for me. I think Kelly needs to go back to the drawing board again and put together something a little different for the new album, “Miss Kelly.” She’s got a lot of artist to compete with this year and I don’t think this is going to get the job done.

Lea – Get Lost In Your Love (full) – download
I haven’t heard much about this girl’s project as of late. If you have absolutely no idea who she is, she’s Lea. Remember that single Lil’ Flip came out with a while back? “Sunshine?” Well, she’s the chick that was featured on the hook. Earlier in the summer of ’06, a few tracks leaked from her produced by the Corner Boyz, and since then, there’s been nothing to surface from her since, so I was admittedly surprised to see this from her. Although her voice isn’t the best, I like how it rides over the production.

its funny how every1 nowadays just wants to listen to singers who cant actually sings, being a great singer is considered a bad thing and shaking ur ass makes u a great performer.

im young (19) but i miss the whitneys, mariahs, celine dion, aretha singers who could really sing. who were classy (cept mimi). Jennifer hudson happens to fit in line with these great singers but perhaps like florence and jholiday the world of commerical music and overproduced garbage music just isnt ready for real talent.

all the jhud haters should watch her live performances and listen to i am changing.

I like Kelly’s song, its pretty cute. I like her flow. Oh wait, Kelly’s beat is by Polow isn’t it? Eve…she is the pushed-back QUEEN! I also like J. Hud’s song. I think those who didn’t like it (Brian) didn’t like the horns, that’s what made it so jazzy, but I think it was nice- and I’m under 30! Rich Boy’s beat was nice, the song was forgettable tho. Lea’s song…I like her but the song is also forgettable. As for the ongoing debate: Ciara is more of an entertainer than a singer, but her album is better than B-Day (there I said it). Better production, MORE songs, it’s a good overall CD. Cassie is garbage but her CD had some beats (courtesy of Ryan LEslie no doubt). So bring on the real singers, I’m all for it!

JHud I have been a stanch supporter of you and your work and will continue to do so. However, I am offering this slight scathing critique as a wakeup-early call. You need to come stronger than this on your album, as I do believe one is coming. At the end of the day, the only thing going for you might be your voice. So get with some good producers, take a notebook with you on your flights to write lyrics as the inspiration moves you, and focus. It’s a tough game and you have got to bring more to be a lasting contender.

I am not for sure why Ciara came up in this post, but I will address her. Ciara can sing- her voice works well as an accompanying instrument (low range) to her music. She is by no means a technical vocalist or embellisher. She is an entertainer more so than a songstress. What she does, she does exceptionally well- such as dance moves. Again, the visuals in “Promise” are superior to any recent music video. I would also argue- like #62 ChocklitFactory- that her Evolution, despite its flaws- was more enjoyable than B Day.

man i love me some rich boy and lea she ‘s ok but i didn’t like her on the lil flip song and i don’t like her now and j hud she can sing but i woudn’t listen to this and as for kelly she got top producers she got polow the don rockwilder scott storch rich harrison ect and she got luda on her album tank and snoop .ps i love like this that shit makes a sista wanna dance

Loved Jennifer’s voice but HATED the production. And “Overjoyed” is my favorite Stevie Wonder song. It was too “jazzy” and needed a more soulful feel.

Didn’t care enough to listen to the other track.

  6. Damn, I hope Rich Boy doesn’t become a one-hit wonder. He’s the only rapper from my state to make it in the mainstream. Though, only after listening to the song for thirty seconds, I can only say one thing…..HELL NAW!!! Though the beat is tight!

As for J. Hud, the song’s nice, but the production is to jazzy, instead of soul.

    As for Kelly, the song’s…..okay.

Didn’t really like the song by Cassie, uh I mean, Lea! LOL!!

  7. hee hee!!

im pretty sure thats the wrong pic. thats paula deanda, not lea.

  8. nikki

I specifically remember Lil Flip and Lea on 106 & Park when Sunshine dropped out and she was asked when her album was coming out. She said real soon. That was years ago. Wonder what happened.

  9. Ebony87

oooohhh…j-hud looks just like effie white in that pic…i like the song!!

  10. MidasTouch

Everyone…J-Huds song was recorded BEFORE dreamgirls soon after being on American Idol. She doesn’t go into the studio until March. If you go to her myspace page you can listen to all the songs that she recorded after Idol, but BEFORE dreamgirls.

  11. aysia

i love tha jhud track!! it is pure fire…it just feels sooo good….. and im 16, it has appeal to others other than grown black folks over 30 (#25)

  12. IN LOVE WITH HIM

Jhud needs to stop singing all those damn remskes. American Idol is over. Damn!

  13. IN LOVE WITH HIM

Lea’s song is hot garbage. I liked her previous song “I give you my heart”

  14. Cinammon Toast

I know what’s throwing off the production of J Hud’s song. It’s the water drop in the background. Sounds like a faucet leaking. lol.

  15. wifey

Love JHud. Her version of overjoyed is okay, even though I do love her voice. It sounds a little hokey like something that would’ve been performed on American Idol. I agree w/most who say that the arrangement is awkward. She deserved a better arrangement than that.

  16. Duh

Lea’s comment about J. Hud needs to be recorded. I’m telling ya’ll, J or RCA made the mistake by thinking that just because she had a successful singing role in Dreamgirls (which had an all star cast and was already a success Broadway production) that it’s going to equate into success as a solo artist. Do people forget that she was even in the top four of American Idol? She’s not that great of a singer, but I think she’s perfect for Broadway. I heard she is going to be doing performing for the play when it opens back up. She needs to hang up the recording artist thing and stick to belting songs that are already popular in theater productions.

  17. songbird

Alot of people is coming down hard on Kells about her solo appearance. Yall have to understand, being in the background for almost 10 years neva getting tha recognition has damaged the girl! Just give her a chance. It’s hard to think outside the box now and days in the music biz. Yall know homegirl can sang, just don’t lose tha faith.

  18. Shawn

Ya’ll Trippin…Its A Damn Shame When Poppin Yo Azz Becomes More Apart Of Singin Then Singin Itself…I LOVE The J.Hud Track…And I’ma Support Her 2 Tha Fullest…Ya’ll Talkin Bout Its 2 Old Soundin And Jazzy…Shyt Its MUSIQ! If This Song Belongs In A Mall Speaker Then Rich Boi Need 2 Put That ‘Throw SOme Ds On It’ Song Into Outer Space!—->

  19. icandi06

um..im confused..am i sposed to take that lea song seriously? lol

jhud sounds amazing (as always)..i love the rendition. overjoyed is truly a classic. kellys song is hot too, shes always been my fave, hopefully she blows up; leaving beyonce to eat her dust! and that rich boy song is *ehh*

  20. Jennifer sounds good singing that song. I prefer Mary J Blige’s version of Stevie Wonder’s song “Overjoyed” . Mary sounds good singing it!

  21. Jennifer sounds good singing that song. I prefer Mary J Blige’s version of Stevie Wonder’s song “Overjoyed” . Mary sounds good singing it!

There’s a better of version of Mary singing it I just can’t find it on youtube for shit!

  22. hee hee!!

u have the wrong pic. thats paula deanda, not lea.

  23. jaXXXon

This song is not new. She sang it for a jazz album that was released under the label she had a production deal under (Renn Music). I believe the jazz artists name is Jamie Wright or something like that. It was recorded as a guess vocal and was done well before DREAMGIRLS and will not be on Jennifers new album. Hope that helps.

  24. Chris

Why does beyonce keep being brought up….she is not in this music review….leave her alone you can make a opinino without mentioning her name especially if you don’t like her or want her to go away. How will she go away if you keep bringing her name up.
