TIM HARDAWAY SAYS “I HATE GAY PEOPLE” & THEN APOLOGIZES

Thursday, February 15, 2007

tha.jpg
“Well, you know, I hate gay people. I let it be known, I don’t like gay people. I don’t like to be around gay people. Yeah, I’m homophobic. I don’t like it. It shouldn’t be in the world for that or in the United States for that. So, yeah, I don’t like it.”

-Tim Hardaway

A week after retired center John Amaechi became the first active or former NBA player to publicly acknowledge he was gay, one of the most popular players in Heat franchise history offered a blunt view on homosexuality Wednesday during a radio interview.

Former Heat guard Tim Hardaway, who had been making public appearances for the NBA, said on Miami-based 790 The Ticket he would not have tolerated a gay player on his team and would have asked to have been traded in such a situation or would have asked to have the gay teammate be traded.

…Hardaway was asked if his opinion would be different if a top-level teammate acknowledged being gay.

“If he were that great, something would still have to give,” he said. “People would feel uncomfortable with that. If you’re not gay, nobody in that locker room would feel comfortable with that person on your team.”

He later apologized for the remarks during a telephone interview with FOX affiliate WSVN in Miami.

“Yes, I regret it. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said I hate gay people or anything like that,” he said. “That was my mistake.” read more

@ #1NUBIANQUEEN, WTF??? Who are “THEY” that keeps saying things to you? They say!!! I’m tired of hearing people saying, “They say”! WTF are you talking about…other gays like yourself?

Tim spoke his mind and now he’s trying to retract because of “Homoterroist”! Why would he want to dress and shower in a locker with another dude who’s fancying his pecker for disdane reasons? Just because you’re a lesbian, don’t start laying more bogus foundations! Y’all need to quit it! lol

In my opinion, I say who you prefer to put the damned WOOD to should have no Bering’s on your skills as an athlete. Some str8 guys act like if a gay guy even smiles or speaks to them like any regular person would, they’re gonna get Cooties or something…”ewwwwwww, he smiled at me…I’m tellin’ my mommy”, lolol. I don’t think that you should hate anybody, but it’s quite funny how the world is running away from the teachings of the bible. It’s like your butt will get damn near shot for saying anything against gay people, (well in hollyweird anyway) it’s like people would rather please the world. I believe that its wrong but it’s their business.

I was thinking the same thing #17, dont say something and then come back and retract it just because it’ll make people feel better. If that’s how you feel then oh well…everyone is entitled to their own opinion. And yes the world is slowy running away from religious teachings…we even have gay ministers?! what’s up with that? But to each his/her own…the only ones who has to pay for their sins are themselves.

I was on the phone with my girl when I heard that interview on yesterday and the first thing I said was, “He’ll be apologizing tomorrow, I ASSURE you! He won’t MEAN it, but he will DEFINITELY apologize because David Stern don’t play that shit AND it’s gonna cost him some money!”

My girl was like, “Nah, he said that shit with too much conviction, he ain’t apologizing for that.”

In this day and age, with Kramer’s racist tirade a few months back, and the continued attitudes towards Gay people, this country really has a long way to go. It is no secret that within the African American community, homophobia lives. People like Hardaway, Kanye West and others African American’s who have openingly come out and condem Gay people is nothing new. It’s just magnified 50X, because these people are celebrities. With that being said, it does not give them the right to tear another human being down. Celebrities, Athletes alike, all have a moral and social contribution in what they say and do, because we buy their products and the media that they put out, with that being said, there really needs to be more emphasis on tolerance and ignorance. No one can judge Gay people but God! We should not buy into the racial hatred and tolerance, no matter what your social/economical status is!

I have lots of lesbian friends…they’re the best to hang out with. I can go to a lesbian bar and there’s no fear of getting hit on because it’s obvious that I’m straight. I’m just there to have a good time with my girls. I don’t think anyone is checking me out that way.

Someone’s sexual preference should not affect how he/she is treated in the workplace or out of the workplace. And for a peer to come out with such ugly hate speech, it’s really offense. Tim Hardaway is entitled to his opinion but to be as ugly as he was when he spewed that nonsense was unacceptable. All he is doing in encouraging hate towards gays and lesbians…

To # 15: Whoever said the Bible was some authority that we should take not of?

Now, just because someone has a little bit of celebrity does not meant that they are also enlightened, couth, or articulate.

If you do not care for gay people that is fine. However, you do not have the right to verbally assault that group in a public space. That is completely inappropriate.

What is about gay people that makes him act so enraged and passionate and up-in-arms about the issue? Just do you.

What he says is a contridiction, cause the actions the NBA or any Professional team take is so gay that it should just be a requirement, such as showering in the same shower room with 11 others, riding on a confind bus for numerous hours with others of the same sex, not really manly or str8. Then lets not forget about all the emotions and excitement that they display with game winning shots and buzzer beaters. That all to me SCREAM gay, so what or who is to determain what is legally gay or not.

Wow, black male celebs sure are talking out their asses these days.

I don’t care if he feels this way because of his “good Christian values” or whatever excuse people are coming up for him. What came out of his mouth was blind, ignorant hate, and no “sorry” is going to cut it. He’s caught out there now, and whatever he loses from his statements is probably deserved.

What if was he said was directed at Jewish people, or Asian people, or white people, or any other group? Nobody would think it was cool. But since it’s just gay people (the people guilty of the ONLY sin preached against in the bible) oh, then it’s ok–he’s just human. Hell no to that. It’s THIS kind of hate that came out of his mouth that is responsible for the countless gay people bashed and/or killed for doing nothing more than minding their own damn business and being themselves. And no matter what religion or creed you are, it isn’t right. Keep your hate to yourselves and learn how to cope, because in this country EVERYONE has the right to freedom and the pursuit of happiness (at least they should).

Words like these would be unacceptable if they were aimed at any other group of people. It’s unfortunate that homosexuals still fall into the loop hole.

We as black people should be careful about doing to others what was done to us. Don’t forget, part of the reason our people were enslaved was because someone used the Bible to justify it by saying God cursed us.

We are all entitled to our opinons but this is bigger than just having a controversial opionion. This was plain ignorance if no other reason than the public forum he used to spew his opinion.

With the NBA cancelling his appearances at the All Star Weedend event, maybe he will be reminded of what it feels like to be in a minority group who is hated or discriminated against.

Don’t you dare compare disliking gays to racism. People don’t have a choice in what race they’ll be, but they do have a choice in their sexual appetite. Don’t get me wrong, both types of prejudices are wrong but are not on the same level. It’s like someone going into a store and shoplifts, is it the same as someone committing a quadruple homicide? They are both unlawful but on different levels.

Timmy was wrong for saying that shit, but I understand where he is coming from. You know how many times John Amaechi must have patted him on the but during the course of his career?…..lmao. Tim must have reflected and felt funny…I understand!

Preach!!! @ 49, 55 and 57

Did anyone happen to catch The Real World last night? They touched on the subject of Christianity and homosexuality. Davis, the gay cast member, brought up a good point as some of you posters have. The Bible says a lot of things are wrong and sinful yet many people pick and choose which points to believe in as they see fit. He talked about how in the Bible it says something about women who pray without their heads covered are shaming the Lord and should have their hair shaved off. I’m almost 100% sure that not even 10% of women cover their heads before praying. But of course, in this society we think this is silly and don’t take it seriously because that’s the way people felt many years ago. And what about premarital sex? This is also a sin. But I guess it’s “not as big” a sin as being gay, right? My point is, if someone is going to use the Bible to justify their hate then they should be following the Bible to the letter because who are they to pick and choose what is right and wrong in the Bible.

Oh, we do have a choice? That’s news to me. And what gives you the authority to make a statement that goes against every ounce of scientific and psychological research? I’d definitely like to know.

Me being gay was about as much of a choice as it was for my skin being black.

You were either a fool when you said it, or a fool when you apologized for saying it - either way, you are a fool.

You don’t have to condone the behavior, but his statements were just ignorant, especially if he believed that there were no gay men on his teams through high school, college and the NBA.

I have to Cosign with #60. It kills me how people pick out what they want to in the Bible for their own agenda. There are many scriptures in the Bible such as the #60 that are classified as sin but people “overlook” them. And speaking for myself as a black gay man, I didnt choose to be gay. Why would I choose to be gay knowing I could be discriminated against (I haventt been..nock on wood), gay-bash ( havent been..knock on wood) and hear homophobic comments such as what Mr. Hardaway has spewed.

Whats funny is that Im not so much mad at men like Tim Hardaway for saying such comments or having such attitude towards homosexuals (everyone is entitled to their own opinion) Im more annoyed that they not only perpetrate the stereotype of “angry black man” but they dont own up to their comments.
Sorry that is a punk (pun intended) move. Man Up Mr. Hardaway and claim your homophobia. If u are homophobic, be homophobic. U said the comments with such conviction, and U mean to tell me you had a change in a heart about such an issue in 24 hour time frame. Get the hell out of here with that!

66.

dukesman2000

Thursday, February 15, 2007 /

@ Pittbboi

There is also NO scientific evidence that homos are born, either. I don’t need science, all I need is what the Bible tells me. God does not make homos or straight people for that matter. Does God create serial killers and rapist? No…Babies are born with a “clean slate” and as that individual grows and develops his or her surroundings or life events shape what that person becomes, and that includes sexuality. Sexuality is a choice, my friend. Whether you choose to copulate with like genders, opposite genders or animals, it is your choice. So is abstinence!

So if you choose to be gay, that is your choice, I dont have a problem with it. But dont you ever try and tell me that’s the way you were born. And I will argue this point with anybody!

Did your dick’s erections respond to men and women equally until a point in your life where u decided to like women? If thats what happened then u need to give us your secrets cause I’m sure MANY gay men would like to have your abilities.

Nigga please, gay men didnt choose to be gay they were born that way…..however they can choose to act on those urges or not to. Its not a sin to be gay its a sin to act on it.

JUDAH

@49

No disrepect brother, but if you’re going to try to breakdown the Bible, know what you’re talking about. The scripture defines who your neighbor is in both the Old and New Testaments as well as defining all other things. You wouldn’t go before the white man in his court and say, “you’re just a man and the constitution was written by men”. You would bow your head down like a good negro and accept your sentence and judgement. Give the Lord and his Word the same fear, love, and respect.

I guess that Tim Hardaway didn’t learn from the Isaiah Washington situation. He should know by now that black men’s opinions are not welcome on any subject other than hip hop or basketball. He should’ve just said “no comment”. If he was going to say it, then he should’ve stuck to his guns because the fact of the matter is that 80% of people in general (and 90% of blacks in particular) in this society are stupid as hell and have no moral foundation. Society doesn’t accept apologies from black males. It will just delay your penalty, lol. Freedom of speech is like the Big Bang, a THEORY not a fact. He’s going to be heavily affected by this because other black men will not stand with him out of fear and stupidity, most black women love homosexuals and the white man, and the white man can’t wait for a negro male to give him a reason to slowly destroy his career.

If you challenge the core tenets of this society, you have to be well-versed enough in your beliefs to back them up when challenged, especially as a black man. In 2007, you can’t just say some crazy shit like, “I hate gays” unless you can really corroborate it with some type of spiritual and intellectual foundation. This is a Homosexual Revolution that we’re in the midst of and negroes better recognize that shit and think accordingly. The times, this world, and these people are too wicked to try to trade emotional thoughts with them. If you do get emotional with them, most of these “open-minded” people will try to get violent because they have no spiritual base.

You know what’s really funny about that “homophobic card” that the sister superimposed into his hand. They might really start makin’ cats carry that shit if you get too rebellious, lmao. Black men (and the sisters that pay attention) really need to analyze this shit and see what’s happening around them. These current events are not about “accepting everybody”, it’s about viewing the white man as god and his law as god’s word. That’s why people can’t stand when you quote the Bible but will stand at attention when the Constitution is being read. That’s also why they label you when you don’t succumb to the peer pressure that these cowards try to inflict you with. This shit is not a game and it’s very apparent that black people (especially black men) need to return to worshipping the Most High in the spirit of truth as opposed to worshipping these idols and the white man.

One thing that confuses me is, if sexuality is no one’s business but that person’s, then why do some black women get so angry when they get a DL negro for? He doesn’t have to tell you he’s bisexual, it’s “his business” remember, lol. It should only become both of your business if he marries you or gives you HIV or AIDS.

Then argue it with me.

I love it when I get into these arguments with people the first thing they do is liken homosexuality to killers and rapists, as if there’s any actually correlation. Wrong.

The scientific debate at this point isn’t whether or not homosexuality is a choice (that was ruled out by the scientific community at large decades ago, so you’re technically already wrong). The debate is whether or not homosexuality is a genetic issue–as some research on the genetic make-up of humans and some animals suggests, (so you’re wrong on this count, too)–or if homosexuality is caused by environmental influences present during important developmental stages of a child (infancy).

The go-betweeners like to suggest that the true answer lies somewhere in the middle of both arguments, and as time goes on that may be the case, because there’s evidence piling up on both sides (though more so on the genetic front).

I’m in the middle of writing a paper, so I won’t post the list of links I have on the subject. However, I will I really need to. But I think I’ve gotten the point across.

The point is, there was no “choice” made. And abstinence isn’t a cure. By telling someone to be abstinent, you’re telling them that they should live the rest of their lives only being a fraction of who they truly are, and how barbaric is that?

Usually when a person is homophobic, they are trying to hid something themselves. It is usually that person who is hitting somebodys door at 4:00 in the morning when they think no one is looking… LOL

I don’t think he said anything that most straight men don’t think. I agree that he probably should have kept his true feelings to himself though because our world today is so PC. My brother is gay and I find his whole lifestyle pretty disgusting. I have never met any of his boyfriends, nor do I want to. I love my brother, but the less I know, the better. He feels hurt sometimes because I never attend his gatherings or hang out with him when he’s with his friends, but I have zero interest in gay bars or being around a bunch of homosexuals. I feel a little betrayed now because its like I don’t even recognize him since he came out of the closet. I don’t care who slams me for my comments, but I won’t apologize for my personal feelings.

@ Jasszyfe

You are obviously disillusioned but I will humor you. I realized that I was interested in women at around age 10 or maybe earlier. Being Jamaican, I dont think I could have had it any other way..even if I wanted to. Not to say that that aren’t any gay men in Jam Rock but life is really difficult for them.

@ #68, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is what I’ve been trying to tell people for the longest.

I’m a straight female but I have lots of gay male friends and it annoys me to no end how some people don’t understand how a gay person did not choose to be gay. They didn’t choose to be gay no more than I chose to be straight.
