TIM HARDAWAY SAYS “I HATE GAY PEOPLE” & THEN APOLOGIZES
Thursday, February 15, 2007

“Well, you know, I hate gay people. I let it be known, I don’t like gay people. I don’t like to be around gay people. Yeah, I’m homophobic. I don’t like it. It shouldn’t be in the world for that or in the United States for that. So, yeah, I don’t like it.”-Tim Hardaway
A week after retired center John Amaechi became the first active or former NBA player to publicly acknowledge he was gay, one of the most popular players in Heat franchise history offered a blunt view on homosexuality Wednesday during a radio interview.
Former Heat guard Tim Hardaway, who had been making public appearances for the NBA, said on Miami-based 790 The Ticket he would not have tolerated a gay player on his team and would have asked to have been traded in such a situation or would have asked to have the gay teammate be traded.
…Hardaway was asked if his opinion would be different if a top-level teammate acknowledged being gay.
“If he were that great, something would still have to give,” he said. “People would feel uncomfortable with that. If you’re not gay, nobody in that locker room would feel comfortable with that person on your team.”
He later apologized for the remarks during a telephone interview with FOX affiliate WSVN in Miami.
“Yes, I regret it. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have said I hate gay people or anything like that,” he said. “That was my mistake.” read more

Yes because anyone with a different opinion is dilusioned. Anyway I find it funny how you still didnt answer my question. When did you CHOOSE to like women? When did you have the ability to decide you prefered vagina’s over penises? Im not asking you when did you start liking women Im asking you when did you CHOOSE cause honestly I doubt you were able to make a decision on what you were attracted to. I knew i liked dudes when i was in preschool and never did I have the ability to change those feelings and point them towards women. I would literally wish to be straight when I would blow out the candles for my birthday…so for you to be able to choose all willy nilly makes YOU seem dilusional.

Brothers really need to empower themselves with the scriptures so that when they make strong statements, they can back them up. These people that try to run into the Bible and pull scriptures don’t know what the hell they’re talking about. They’re trying to mix this world and “American lifestyle” with the Word of the Lord and that’s like oil and vinegar.

Judah in response to your question:
“One thing that confuses me is, if sexuality is no one’s business but that person’s, then why do some black women get so angry when they get a DL negro for? He doesn’t have to tell you he’s bisexual, it’s “his business” remember, lol. It should only become both of your business if he marries you or gives you HIV or AIDS.”
The issue for DL men isn’t his sexuality, the issue is that he is not being honest about who he is, and mostly because of many of the things that you mention in your initial post.
The issue is further complicated by the fact that his dishonesty could be deadly - because if he is not being honest open about who he is, then he is not likely being honest and open about protecting himself.
The whole thing with people on the DL is that they are not being hoenst about who they are and what they are doing. Bisexual men and DL men, are not necessarily the same. Bisexual men, tell you that they are bisexual. DL men, usually live a lifestyle that suggests that they are “all man” and “hate gays”, when they are having relationships with other men.
Most women are angry because the man is not being honest, and that dishonesty could prove to be fatal.

ya’ll kill me with these bible comments.
seriously, if that’s the case, then women shouldn’t be wearing pants, NONE of you should have tattoos or piercings, none of you should be having sex before marriage, taking drugs, eating like you’ve never seen food before, staring at yourselfs in the mirror all the time (vanity, for retarded people who don’t know the 7 deadly sins), shoplifting (because I know some of you negros steal from the mall) and women, when you’re on your periods, you should be in tints away from everyone else.
that kills me. people are always so quick to throw the bible in someone’s face. all sins are equal, none is worse than another.

okay tim hardaway is a IGNARAMOUS!! You dont have to like a person’s lifestyle and may not like gay people but com’on hate is going to far. There is too much of that as it is. Whats the matter Timmy scared being around a gay man will expose who you are. You know what they say “they know their own kind”. If you were secure in your sexuality and your manhood then so what if a team member was gay. As long as he didnt disrespect you in anyway it shouldnt even bother you. Sounds to me like you may be hiding in the closet Bruh

“Scientific and psychological research” WTF??? The science of bull$#!Tology! The majority of gays say they had no choice until you find out they were raped, abused or neglected! Little boys raised by their mommas! They love to sit down when they piss, cause that’s how momma does it! hehe!
I don’t remember Martin Luther King saying, “I have a dream that little straight boys and little gays boys can join together and sing that old negro spiritual, Free at last, Free at last, thank God, Almighty, I’m Free at last!
I don’t hate Michael Jackson, but I hate what he does and I will never learn to cope with what he does to children! I don’t hate people, but I hate what gays do to each other and to children and what they do against the family!
TANNA AKA NE-HO, Tim did not pick and chose what sin he wanted to speak out against! John Amaechi raised the issue and volunteered that $#!T! I’m sure if Kobe would have said, “I’m an adulter, every married man in the NBA would have spoke against him to distance themselves from him. But, he didn’t do that, Kobe tried to keep his mess in the “closet”, which is exactly what Amaechi should have done! Why do y’all insist on going public with your immoraility?
And, you need to understand the context of “something about” a woman covering her head before coming into the presence of God! You really don’t know what your debating! You’re refering to Old Testament! In the New Testament, women and men are to pray without ceasing! So, Beyonce’ would never be able to uncover her head. Some Countries like Iran still require women to cover their heads…its the law! BTW - a gay man would be beheaded in Iran! If he does it, it keeps his mouth shut with an equally as conservative “partner”.
If the Bible argument makes you feel guilty about your gayism…then its doing exactly what it intends to do! Most people refer to the Bible teaching about gay sin, so you’ll know that its nothing personal…just Jesus speaking! Maybe Tim should have said, “God hates homosexuality!”
And, how can you be “almost 100% sure”? lol You fatherless children are like watered-down punch! The road to recovery is not seeking acceptance from others! Why should I sugar coat this topic with you when I feel that your very soul lies in the balance?
And, so what if he tries to retract his statement to save his endorsements! Damage control is a part of life! How Tim feels is without a doubt, but its not the same as Kramer calling nigers! Hardaway may be wrong for discribing his feeling as hate, but his debate on this issue is solid! This is a war against principle, not people!
The WNBA is plagued with gay women and when you look up in the stands, the audience is like a zoo with short-haired women wearing wife-beaters and jeans. The WNBA is a cess pool! Tim is just saying that he wouldn’t want to see the NBA fall victim to the gay world like the fashion, WNBA and many more industries in coorprate America! When gay numbers grow, straight people put distance between them! However, gays will not prevail!

As stated earlier he must have been under some type of rock when Isiah Washingdumb made the same mistake of putting his foot in his mouth without checking his socks first. LOL This world does have a hell of a long way to go. STOP COMPARING HOMOSEXUALITY WITH RACISM. Hating people is flat out wrong. Not approving someone’s actions is acceptable. Just because homosexuals deserve to be treated with respect, kindness, and love as human beings does not mean that everyone must accept homosexuality as an appropriate action. The counter argument is just as ridiculous….if you say Christians must now accept homosexuality as a good thing when the Bible clearly speaks against it. Now all of a sudden you are discriminating against someone’s religion. As far as racism, this is a hate against a person because of their ethnicity. This is not a hate on someone’s actions.

You said:
“By telling someone to be abstinent, you’re telling them that they should live the rest of their lives only being a fraction of who they truly are, and how barbaric is that?”
So you’re saying that if someone abstains from sex he or she is only living “half a life?”
I dont agree with you, because I think the Tibetan Monks are living very fulfulling lives. Also, Gandhi and Mother Theresa both have lived very fulfulling lives.
See, you crave the flesh so much that you think if you’re not fucking somebody or something, you’re not living.

Or is it the whole fornication thing that constitutes the “lifestyle”? What if you are gay and dont frequent nightclubs like that or fornicate? Does that mean I still have a lifestyle? As a straight black man, I have no problems hanging around gay men. 90% of them could care less about me because they like GAY MEN! As a religious man, I dont agree with their lifestyle, but its not mine, so I could care less. I don’t believe in abortion, but that doesn’t make me a democrat. I am saddened that we are talking about people as if they are not whole because they have a different lifestyle other than our own. To Tim Hardaway, he needs to focus on his ignorance, this is a prime example why they need to make athletes earn an education instead of wallowing in their own ignorance.

That post wasn’t even directed to you, Judah, so give me a break. I know to enter into a debate with you would be entering a ring where the opponent gets to pick and choose which facts best suits his ends, and what’s “contrived drivel created by the white devil”. Oh, and the scientific community is a lot more on track with the origins of both and man and sexuality than you think, Judah–but of course you’re not trying to hear that. Save your bible verses for a church that needs it. I don’t even need to touch that book to get at you on this.

“I dont agree with you, because I think the Tibetan Monks are living very fulfulling lives. Also, Gandhi and Mother Theresa both have lived very fulfulling lives.”
Oh please, if you’ve got a bridge to sell me I’ve got a prayer rag to sell you.
The OBVIOUS difference in the scenarios you mentioned is that Tibetan Monks and Mother Teresa made the choice to abstain from all pleasures of the flesh in order to best serve the Lord as THEY saw fit. They didn’t do it because people convinced them they were going to hell otherwise. If this is the only way to live a fulfilling life then why aren’t you packing to go live in the mountains with those monks, yourself? Put your dick on lock-down and put on a cowl. The picture you painted is an extreme and you know it.
“See, you crave the flesh so much that you think if you’re not fucking somebody or something, you’re not living.”
And the bullshit keeps on rolling. Sex is only a small facet of it. When people direct homosexuals to abstain they aren’t just talking about sex, they’re talking about giving up the idea of ever having a loving and monogamous relationship with who THEY want to be with in order to appease society’s concept of the norm. So you would be ok if a gay man abstained from sex, but still involved himself in a loving relationship with another man? I sincerely doubt it. You are demanding homosexuals curtail the desire to be with and love who they want–a basic human desire. Not just fucking.
Don’t rest your case. You never had one.

WTF? Why is it that every other supposed straight guy gets so caught up on a gay guy looking at them or checking them out? I mean what makes him think that he’s so hot that a gay man wouldn’t be able to help himself and just had to stare at his d*ck in the shower or just had to have “evil gay fantasies” about his monkey ass? Also, does he really honestly believe that there isn’t a gay player on his team already who just hasn’t come out? Does he honestly believe that he hasn’t showered with a gay player already? His comments say more about him than he realizes. Obviously homosexuality is an issue that’s on his mind way more than he’s comfortable with admitting.
ANYONE who hates another person for any lame reason like being Black, White, Asian, Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Asexual, etc. is an ignorant bigot and needs his/her head examined. Period. WE’RE ALL HUMAN, ALL CHILDREN OF THE SAME EARTH AND ALL BLEED RED. There is no reason for such ignorant bigotrty. He’s so full of crap. If anything, he probably made a pass at John and got turned down. In the Black community, it used to be an accepted standard that Black men would go out of their way to condem such homophobic behavior as Hardaway did, but know people are wising up.
Not only does he that cries the loudest has the most to conceal, he that desperately tries to retract such statements isn’t a real man. It’s one thing to state your opinion, but do do it with such ignorance, carelessness and viciousness and then retract it is another. To be 40 years old he sounded like a complete fool to the interview when he asked him to clarify. I can’t wait for the backlash to hit his ass. What a loser.

The only thing you’ve told me was when you started liking girls, not once did u say how you came about choosing them. I can see this convo is going nowhere because you like to avoid things, but for the sake of being a good person I will give you another chance. Exactly when and how did you choose you liked women instead of men or what have you? How were you able to choose what you fantasized about, and what got your penis hard?
Do you honestly think people can control what they are attracted to? Could you CHOOSE to be attraced to an ugly female if you wanted to? Of course the answer is no…but apparently when it comes to gay people we have the special ability choose what we like sexually.

EXCUSE ME! The Bible is not a valid defense for any beliefs. So that is bad advice.
You cannot say, “This is what I believe” and then go pull up some sanctified scripture to validate your claims. Reason being the Bible does not have universal or absolute authority. Now if you want to preface your statement with something like “Well I am a devout Bible thumping Jesus Freak and in the Word it says…,” - well that is allowed.
However, you cannot- in the contemporary- use the Bible as justification and expect to be taken seriously. Get over it.

Don’t confuse debate with a lack of knowledge. And scientific ambiguity in one field doesn’t always apply to everything.
I could easily point out that the bible is still a heavily debated text, but it would be pointless and in fact turn me into you: relying on the irrelevant to make my point.
There will ALWAYS be naysayers. There will ALWAYS be some form of confusion in just about everything. In some cases, it is majority and opinion and the theory that has the most evidence supporting it that must be relied upon. As it stands now, homosexuality is not a choice, and most current debate is centered on just what THAT means. Not whether or not it’s true. Deal with it.

To me the ignorance is not so much in what he said, but more so the response that I have been reading. So what if he does not like you? He does not have to. You can say that his words were ignorant, they may have been. But they were his words. Not yours. His thoughts. You cannot tell a person they are wrong for their thought. Most people conclude their feelings from past experiences. So a better question is what exactly happened to him to make him feel like this? You dont know his experiences just like he does not know yours, so before you condemn him for his God-Given right to think and speak freely, find out why he says what he says. People want to be listened to, but do not want to listen. You have one mouth and two ears for a reason. I am not saying do not stand up for what you believe in, but if that is his belief then let that be. Let him deal with his own issues on his own. At the end of the day he is the one who has to sleep with himself. I do not think he is a closet homo, I just think he had a bad expereince that relates to homosexuality. My thought is if you are truly comfortable in your skin, then you would not even entertain him. I would never justify my heterosexualty to anyone who asked. Because I do not care what anyone thinks.
As far as your sexuality being your business, that is true. However, that beast takes a whole other turn when deception (the DL man) is involved. Take note.

If you would have read…most of the gay folks on this site dont even care about old dude not liking gay people. Most of us are responding to folks who like to make gay people superhuman by saying we can choose our attractions and such.

Where’s Azure or Bill at….some intelligent upstanding brothers and sisters that stand for something. Maybe ya’ll can tell me if I’m going off or not. I see alot of “Christian” negroes that are conformed or half-stepping. Christ said that he’s gonna spit you out if you’re lukewarm.
You know what’s really funny, that these homosexuals are so “confident and secure” but they get so offended when someone says anything against their lifestyle. No one said, “let’s kill gays and lesbians”. That’s how you know they want to change people’s thoughts, not their actions. The same “black” homos that talk about how “it’s not that serious” when black men get killed or falsely arrested are ready to march on the White House with rainbow army boots on, lol.

The point is everyone is so concerned with others faults when its all the same….in reference to the bible. No, I am not well versed as to every quote in the bible, but it is funny how those with there own demons like to focus on others. Whether it’s right or wrong is not the argument. How it’s affecting your situation and why you feel so strongly against something that no one is imposing on you is a better question.
I FEEL WE ALL HAVE OUR OPINIONS LIKES AND DISLIKES BUT TO DWELL ON SOMETHING THAT ISN’T DIRECTLY AFFECTING YOU ECONOMICALLY OR YOUR IMMEDIATE HOUSEHOLD IS POINTLESS.
I would really like to see these outspoken people’s view on something that really has an impact on there livelyhood.
They probably don’t have one because most people like that are shallow and lack intelligence on more intellectual subjects. NOT, DO YOU LIKE GAYS….

Boy, what a dumbass. I knew he’d apologize. If not, I don’t know what he’s doing for a living now, but he’d have fucked himself out of a significant sector of society.
How do we as black people find the energy to discriminate against anyone. We haven’t gotten our forty acres and a mule yet. It’s such a waste of time and energy.
We Vegas firts got going, the mobster Bugsy Siegel wanted Lena Horne to perform at his hotel, loved her music. But, he had her bed sheets burned. To top it off, he was a jew. He was hated more by the racist whites than we were. Jews were making huge financial inroads, they were pariahs. What kind of logic was he using.
God will be the final arbiter for anyone who is wrong, it’s not our place to judge. Live and let live, they are people just like the rest of us.

#123 It is always in the best of interest for people with conviction and intellect to take on struggles that are not uniquely their own. My interests and that of someone facing adversity are mutually aligned.
A few years ago when migrate strawberry pickers boycotted Whole Foods for unjust treatment I acted out as I regular shop there and demanded change. Yet, I am not a migrant strawberry picker, but I am sensitive to their claims.
When A&F offended countless Asian Americans with a series of offensive and humor-gone-awry shirts I was there. Yet, I am not Asian American, but will not stand for assault as humor.
As women in Central America and Southern Asia are trafficked into prostitution. I protest. Yet, I am not a woman or of either ethnicity, but believe that no one should be forced into sex work against their own will.
And when Blacks were headed for the North many of them received a helping hand from kind White American souls- and I thank them. Because while the tedious journey to freedom is not my direct struggle it was the path of my fore fathers/mothers as I am African American. Do you see my point?
What would have happened to my ancestors if those willing people (many of whom happened to be White) chose not to help because that struggle was not their own?
Sometimes these marginalized groups have no political platform on which to stand and have their grievances heard. It is at these times that people should rally around a cause and create a dent in the social sphere in which we live (even if you fee you are not “economically” affected- as you so callously put it).

The Bible is only heavily debated because the people that filter the knowledge of the Bible are not the Lord’s chosen. You probably believe it when they tell you that all these ancient cultures had no written records too, huh?

I must admit that Meatloaf had a point on the WNBA. OMG! It’s almost like it’s a requirement or right of passage to get selected to a team to be GAY! But if you watch the high school, college and pro female basketball games being lesbian is the MAJORITY not the minority. Even the coaching staff as well.
What’s up with that? Can someone shed some light on that then since folx are debating.

I wish Tim had said what he had to say to Vibe or XXL, but saying it to a white man on the radio, hew will happily send that to whomever will listen. He gets notoriety out of Tim’s honesty. I do not agree with Tim, I think some people just like to listen to themselves and get caught up in a moment, because “hate” is a strong word, I do not dislike homosexuals and I do not just tolerate them. I tolerate caucasians!!! Anyways, being gay and also a professional athlete is NOTHING people. Who gives a damn, as long as you can hoop, run fast, or tackle, it does not matter. People need to get off that stuff. It makes no sense that this is a big deal. journalists should not even be asking those questions. It makes me wonder, if there is a “current” player out there who is gay or DL, he is truly not going to say anything. He will have to compress it, and I believe that will affect some people mentally! Really people need to get lives, are professional athletes not humans, I mean I know they are sometimes above the law, but damn, they are made of the same stuff we are! I’m out thanks for reading…..

There you go again with your irrelevant factoids, Judah. As though the debate over the bible is any more acceptable. What makes you anymore “chosen” than those others who filter the Lord’s word? Pure conjecture. Just admit that you have nothing else to say and drop it.

Sis, you are extremely intelligent but let’s cut to the chase. Many, many black women in this society love gay men and they get their just deserts.
___________
Judah -
maybe so, but in that case, those men are not down low, they have identified themselves as gay and the women have made a choice to accept that.
You question was why do women get upset with men on the DL, and again, it is not about the sexuality, it is about the deception.

Respectfully, I don’t see your point. lol… Your speaking of people who have been mistreated or are in a struggle of some sort. Standing up for these people is a noble thing to do and I applaud your conviction. However, what battle (a person who just doesn’t aggree with gays) are they fighting? There is no victim in this case just a bunch of hypocrites that like to spue hateful comments. So how are you standing up for the “the hetero world”? Answer: Your not! You’re simply offering your opinion on gays! Which is your right, but pointless to convey!
Why not preach on something like black on black crime or how to bring each other up as black people? Something that does in fact affect your livelyhood.

U know i dont even think i commented on the topic at hand lol. I agree with 137 in that white people are just lookin to get contraversy and like the uncle tom he is, tim just shucked and jived his way into the white mans trap. I know people are gonna say that we shouldnt be silencing our opinions of certain things, but if you want to make it you need to learn the game. Just like I. Washington, this fool just dont know how to stfu. He is a BASKETBALL player, not a political figure. He should have just said he was there to talk basketball and left it at that.
Now he ended up lookin like a bumblin fool cause he wanted to “speak his mind”. And dont act like it was his opinion and that he can say whatever he wants cause obviously his apology tells me otherwise.

I am not going to come down of Tim Hardaway 100%. I do think using the word “hate” was uncalled for.
The bottom line is that in life, everyone is not going to accept you, and they don’t have to. Whether it’s because you’re gay, you’re a female, you’re black, you’re handicapped, you’r fat, etc…that is just a harsh reality of life!!! We all experience discrimination!!Face the facts..I’m not saying it is ok, but the is just the way it is.

My point is directly related- or in response- to 123’s comment about not taking on issues that are not immediate to us. I think that’s anti-intellectual. I was not directly referring to gay people and their respective rights (or lack thereof), but rather the short-sighted nature of the comment in and of itself.
However, if I wanted to, I could make a case that gays are a very marginalized group and culturally, verbally and even physically assaulted because they are gay. That struggle is both real and apparent, but that was not the intention of that post. Yet, Hardaway’s comment illustrates a painful sort of reality that exists in America (specifically amongst Black Americans) that perpetuates cycles that lead to discrimination (verbal or otherwise) against gays.

What’s “get ya here get”, like some 1940’s ebonics? Negro go ‘head with that shit(no pun intended). Hopefully you repent before Christ comes back, if not, I really don’t care. Somebody has to be put to death.
I do believe that some people are born with that homosexual spirit, but only to show the Lord’s chosen how not to behave (Prov 16:4). That’s why there’s no need to get frustrated, angry, or violent because all these things happen to fulfill prophecy. Any time in ancient Israel that the Israelites were dealing with the Most High, they removed “the sodomites” out of the land (I Kings 15:11,12, I Kings 22:45,46, etc.). This is a wicked society so the homosexuality is going to multiply, simple as that.

I think it’s always a bitch-ass move to give your honest opinion on something and then turn around and apologize for what you’ve said after the fact. If you have the balls to say it, have the balls to stand behind it — unless you truly didn’t mean what you said in the first place. But if that’s how you feel, stick with it. Damn, the man got your purse strings tied like that? Not a good look Tim. Maybe YOU should have waited until YOU retired to make that statement. Then it would actually mean something (at least to you and the millions who heard it).
