How is this celebrating Black History??? I remember when this happened and I didn’t think it was such a big deal. I would say Naomi Cambell did more to promote black beauty than Tyra. Wow when I saw the title I thought it has something to do with Martin Luther King, Malcom X, Rosa Parks or somebody of that standard but it’s Tyra. I understand she was the first black female to grace the cover of SI but that is NOT BLACK HISTORY TYRA BANKS. Come down from your high horse and live with us for a moment. It has a lot to do with Black history month since she was a Model and being on the cover was a big step for her career. She was in fact, the first black woman(not te first black singer or actress) to appear on the cover. So this is history. She opened the door for Beyonce to grace the SI cover.
Anything that is groundbreaking for a black person’s career, wether it be in entertainment or not, is BLACK HISTORY.

Well i for one am glad that she’s at least addressing the issue of body consciousness in a way other than the usual chics. And while she may be a little conceited she’s still empathetic to other people. She’s opened up and shown people what goes on behind the scenes to make these incomprehensibly great photos look like they do. That’s good for young girls out there who think that these cover gils and video girls are so perfect and feel badly about themselves.
You know sometimes when you’re running your own business and doing your own show, the best way to go about it is to use yourself. I’m a photographer and i don’t have a lot of clients right now so most of the shots in my portfolio are actually pictures of myself. It’s just a matter of business and neccessity. I don’t hate on her for doing that. Besides if you can’t admit to your own faults, who are you to talk TO or ABOUT other people’s.
And while the SI cover may not have been equivicle to sitting on the back of the bus, it was a FIRST and it was the first time that a mainstream WHITE media outlet was admitting to the sex appeal and marketability of black beauty. So it still IS a black history moment. We can still be proud of it and celebrate it and stop hating on the successes of our own!
…but I can’t help to think this is not really a Black history show,rather a follow-up to that “fat” show.
