WHERE THEM GREEN BRACELETS FROM?
Some of you may have noticed people rocking a green beaded bracelet in the last couple of posts…and right beside them is Russell Simmons cheesing. Well the bracelet comes from his “Green Initiative” jewelry collection designed by Simmons Jewelry Co. (yea, the Simmons have jewelry too).
Russell announced in December of last year that 25% percent of the proceeds will go toward the Diamond Empowerment Fund, which will support institutions, like schools and colleges, in South Africa and Botswana and help boost economic development.
Yesterday, A Diamond Affair hosted the “Green Initiative Launch” where Eva Marcelle, Sanaa Lathan, and Serena Williams came out to model the jewels from his collection…

I dont know about this one. Russell Simmons is a great man but Im not sure he is fully aware of the diamond situation in Africa aka the motherland. 29, South Africa is probably far more hit than other countries in Africa. For years, us black people here in America has watched the corruption and turmmoil that has unfolded in South Africa. Of course other countries need help, but only so much could be done at a time. We as black people have to step up and help reclaim the land that our ancestors once came from. You cant go with that kind of attitude. Everybody has to be helped. But you have to help those who desperately needs all the help they can get first. Our motherland was this once flourishing land. Kings and Queens. Kingdoms and palaces. Now you have nothing but war, famine, disease, rape,segragation, slavery,etc… Just the absolute worse things you could have ever imagine to happen to such a beautiful place. I dont think black people really understand that. What the hell is really keeping us from helping our people? Why dont we care enough to help or give back? I’m of Nigerian heritage. It really perplexes me why so many African American celebrities seem to equate helping Africa with helping SOUTH AFRICA. South Africa is in need of help financially and socially, but it isn’t the ONLY country in Afica that needs support. Many other countries in Africa are in far greater need of the type of help that celebrities, such as Oprah Winfrey, Russell Simmons, Alicia Keys etc, seem to solely/ or mostly give to South Africa.
Obviously the recent one/ live 8 initiative was targeted at some of the more poorer nations, showing that there are initiatives that are concentrated on other African countries.
But sometimes, maybe out of jealousy on my part, I feel at though South Africa garners more attention, especially in the African American community, than other needier, poorer African countries.
If I can find the bracelets, I’d rock it.
