Now, I know these two are not exactly the same song, but they are definitely very similiar. The first to come out was Nicole Scherzinger’s “Steam.” It’s produced by my homeboy Bryan-Michael Cox. I’m not exactly sure whether or not this is going to make the cut for her album, but I love the track all of the same. I think it’s a great dance record. However, when 7 & Ashanti dropped “My Number, Babe,” I was pleasantly surprised because it reminds me of a Prince record (mainly because of 7′s vocals), and because it’s a duet. But the production is pretty much identical. Which one do you prefer? Who rides the beat better? Nicole of Pussycat Dolls fame or Ashanti?

Of course, die-hard Ashanti fans have surfaced, prompting me to say what everybody should already know. Nicole Scherzinger has one of the better voices in pop culture today. Being attached to a group like PCD, she hasn’t had much opportunity to show her vocal chops, which is fine because she’s sexy and a great performer as well. If you’ve ever heard her live, you know she can blow Ashanti out of the water, easily. She didn’t win a national singing competition for nothing. Ashanti could never sing, not when she debuted, not now, and not when she says babe/baby a thousand times in 4 minutes. So, no, it’s not because Nicole is lighter, (whether you were referring to weight or skin color is uncertain) it’s because she has more talent, period. Ashanti fans would do well to take their blinders off… And wonder why they’re Ashanti fans to begin with.

I have to agree with #125. I listened to both songs. I’m not crazy about either one, but I will say this…Ashanti’s lack of singing ability distracted me from a totally good track. Nicole’s song isn’t that much better, but Nicole can sing circles around Ashanti. I’m not mad at her fans for taking up for her though, Ashanti is getting better as a singer. All the backlash from everyone has made her double up on the vocal coaches. It would probably say that the people who think Ashanti can sing probably have little musical ability themselves, and are just rooting for the underdog. If they did, their ear would tell them otherwise. (sorry) Although…you don’t have to be a musician to know when someone doesn’t have that great of voice. Call me a hater if you like…maybe I am. I hate that someone with so little talent can win grammy’s and have multi-platinum albums, and all the while people who can sing their asses off are getting overshadowed by singers with pretty faces and who couldn’t hold a note if I carried it for them! She might write alot of her songs, but being a songwriter doesn’t make you a good singer.
