WTF FILES: JENNIFER HOLLIDAY IS ON THAT STUFF

Here is the video that has been circulating the web for the past couple of days. It features Jennifer Holliday (the original Effie White) performing her signature song, “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” on the red carpet at the Academy Awards.

Well she needs to “go” somewhere with this version, because she looks crazy as hell. I mean this video is very painful to watch, and I don’t know who even approved it for the air. Whatever the case, it has now made its mark in the WTF files.

  1. In the words of Florida Evans: DAMN! DAMN! DAMN!…

  2. LMAO

    maybe she had a stroke…..while sining….
    teehheee

  3. wess boogie

nothing wrong with her. stop looking for negative stuff all the time. she sounds great.

  4. THE TRUTH

She still sang it better than I heard anybody else sing it including better than Jhud. She was a little crackish this time but she can still put it down.

  5. She sounds okay, but she held back a lot.

  6. DayDreaming.

Its nothing new for her to be making those faces. If you Youtube her Tony’s performance she does the same thing. I think it has to do with her training. She has lost weight since then, but the faces are still hard to look at.

  7. rebuildneworleans

I don’t think that it was bad…if you have seen any of her older performances with her singing that song, she always looks like that…and of course you have all these newcomers performing the song that you put on the map and sounding hella good doing it..so that has to be rather intimidating…she was just trying to add some more finesse to it (hee-hee)…I love Jennifer..but you know sometimes it good to leave it to the youngens and let them show homage to you by singing your song….It was a good thought, just not executed all that well :)

  8. sxccarmaldelite

Not bad but a little less of the gruffy voice would do. But the ending was weird.

  9. mzsticnmove

I remember a long time ago when she had surgery… I guess..to lose weight. She’s older now and maybe that has affected her getting enough wind. But she sounded aiight she just over did it in too many areas. But still..MUCH RESPECT TO THE ORIGINAL DIVA.

  10. Lady cole

Yea i mentioned this performance on another post. Hef face yo, and her voice! what the hell was that shit??? soundin like a monster! lol.

  11. Quiche-A

That is still HER song. Period!

I didn’t think she sounded all that bad. She’s always been dramatic and overly expressive when she sings but there’s no denying that sista got a set of pipes on her (vocal pipes I mean!! LOL)

  12. Sharonda

Really Jenifer Holidays version out beats JHUD I mean if you haven’t heard the original than you need to.But she a lil older so I guess its not the same.

  13. She Over Exaggerated the song no doubt But I must be Crazy because I think she still has a very soulful voice and with a few tune ups she could blow that damn song out the box.

  14. Atl_1987

Yeah, like a few people already said, she is known for making those faces when she sings the song…and “Effie” was supposed to be in physical pain while she was singing, so that’s where it comes from. This will always be Jennifer Holliday’s song and that will never change, so…anyway.

  15. Ishine

WTF??? I saw a clip of this on Jimmy Kimmel after the Oscars and thought it was a joke…I never liked this song anyways from all the damn times I heard people sing it on Ameture Night at the Apollo.

  16. sxccarmaldelite

@15. I agree. Yes she has always been dramatic. I think it comes from her days on stage. Notice most stage perfomers in plays (such as Tyler Perry’s productions) tend to be overly dramatic and sometimes over sing, but I think it wasn’t too bad.

  17. I hope no one on here starts non sense trying to put Jennifer Holliday down saying J-Hud is better cause J. Holliday did that live on stage not in a studio.

But she looks good except when she make them facial expressions. She done look like she lost 300 pounds.

  18. I really didn’t see anything all that wrong with this performance. Maybe she’s sang the song so much that she wanted to do it a different way, perhaps? lolol.. I dunno…

  19. Ranata

I agree with #7. She was kind of crackish with it but she didn’t sound horrible.

  20. Dave

    whats wrong with her performance?

  21. She sounds great to me; the same as she always has but it disturbs me that these entertainment shows seem to be capitalizing on the situation with Jennifer Holiday and Jennifer Hudson. ET did an interview with her (Holiday), and she was very upset about the movie and Jhud. I think that Holiday needs to get over everything and move on. She will always be the original, no doubt, and no one is trying to take that from her, but this performance was so unneccesary.

  22. bmoreserious

It was painful at the end. What was up with the Oscar the Grouch noises at the end? She’s just getting old, that’s all. Still, J. Hud will NEVER top J. Holliday’s original song. you can download the original version on limewire.

  23. DINAD82

She sounds okay. But whats up with the face?????????

  24. Good to listen to, hard to watch.

I think she is having such a hard time with letting go of Effie and Dreamgirls and letting someone else take the shine for that role. I understand where she is coming from, especially when she talks about the producers using her voice for months of the promo trailer before the official one was released. But she needs to let go. When stage shows get made into movies, more people are always more familiar with the movie version. Broadway is not as accessable as movies. It’s just how the game works.

  25. tRUTh

YOU GUYS ON HERE CAN B REALLY CRUEL AN A LIL DISREPECTFUL ON HERE JEN HAS BEEN MAKING THE UGLY FACE (THAT’S WHAT IT’S CALLED) FOR YEARS NOW IT WAS JUST A LIL BIT MORE OF A SMILE-LIKE FROWN BEFORE BECAUSE SHE WAS OF A (CERTAIN WEIGHT) SHE SOUNDS N LOOKS BEAUTIFUL NOT TO MENTION SHE DID IT WITHOUT TO MUCH YELLIN LIKE (SOMEONE ELSE)

  26. zoom

she sounds a little different now she’s still got it however i think she over sang the song..

  27. KittyKatt

She has lost a considerable amount of weight but it didn’t sound bad and she doesn’t look horrible to me I don’t see the issue. I still over her to death!

  28. KittyKatt

#4 if she did have a stroke in the past why would that be funny? Help me understand that?

  29. J.Marie

I thought she sounded pretty good. You gotta remember she started singing this song on Broadway so of course she gonna be dramatic with it. I know she has been through some things with depression so I’m a leave it alone. She has always made those faces though.

  30. I only got through 59 secs. of this video. what in the world was up with the twisted jaw and facial contortions? I think if she would’ve just sung and not tried to get her Sylvester Stallone on, the performance would’ve been better.

    She looks good though.

  31. Asentha

WTF is right!!! Her dentures look too big for her mouth!

  32. Is this chick wasted, no seriously?

  33. suburbchick

shes the original…i aint hatin, still sounds good to me!

  34. ms_mac

I’d be on that ish too if someone else won an Academy Award for a rehashed role I made famous twenty years ago.

  35. Aviyaun Morgan

First of all…This is her song so she can sing it any way she wants too. Jennifer Hudson did not start this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. nate

The ONLY issue i have with ms. Holiday is that she is a legend everybody knows this but shes has been very negative to Jennifer hudson since day one. She should have welcomed her instead of going to these news shows and talking about how this movie will end her career. it isnt hudsons fault that your only career is this one song, it seems like with the big voice holiday has she could do some more broadway, or a tyler perry play, or an album there are so many different things to do for money why stick to this forever? the issue isnt that she sung this song, its that she did it at the academy awards when its was Jennifer H.’s night and seems very shady to me. we need to support each other black people, im sick of this cut each other down bulls$#t

  37. Mellymel

She sounded ok…The only downside was the ending.

  38. SHE MAY LOOK A LITTLE OFF BUT HER VOICE IS BEATIFUL. SHE SOUNDS BETTER THAN OTHERS WHO HAVE SUNG THAT SONG. IM NOT GOING TO COMPARE TO JENNIFER HUDSON BECAUSE SHE HAS BEEN AROUND LONGER. A LOT OF GOOD SINGERS MAKE UGLY FACIAL EXPRESSIONS WHILE SINGING. SHE DID KIND OF FUNK UP THE END….

  39. What the hell was that?! When she sang at the Tonys back in the 80s, she sounded great, but she was forcing it, and the ending… what the fuck? Ms. Holliday was forcing this whole thing. I’m sorry, yall, but this was bad.

  40. Shaft

    Good listen.Hard watch

  41. Coko

    Yeah the ending..ummm..I guess.
Some singers do make those faces…makes them hard to watch, but that’s it.

  42. Roget

She did that performance for the E Channel as a part of their coverage of the Oscars. There was nothing wrong with it. It is important for people to pay homage to the original production. Without it the movie would not be. The singing “ugly face” is a hallmark of the great Broadway singers. She was not trying to receive undue attention. She said that she was proud of J Hud’s nomination because it means that the character “Effie” is receiving the attention she deserves.

  43. DC WALK

WHO RESING THIS SONG, I SEARCHING, BECAUSE I ALREADY HEARD ” AND YOU, AND YOU, AND YOU GONNA LUV ME IN A DIFFERENT SONG BUT I CAN’T REMEMBER WHICH ONE…

  44. 1, 2 &4 LMAOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO IM MAD I HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL I GET HOME TO WATCH THIS MESS :-(

  45. Bianca

That shit was HORRIBLE, she just mad b/c Jennifer sung it better than her. Grow up, and stop trying to prove a point we all know you did it first.

  46. Genesisbaby

SHE HAS ALWAYS MADE THOSE FACES…SHE CAME OUT AT BIRTH MAKING RETARDING TOURETTES FACES!!!!!

  47. nishauna

sing jenny baby she still sound good i convinced the same people do this site that do mediatakeout.com cause ya’ll some major haters….

  48. dee dee

The end had me laughing, but she sang her butt off. Thanks, I needed a good laugh today but I don’t see what was so bad about it. Except the end was funny.

  49. nishauna

and why ya’ll keep saying she old what is she in her forties damn blow it

  50. That’s how she she sounded the first time she sung like 20 yrs ago. IT just sounds weird cuz no one sings like that now and she lost weight. If she was bigger it might of made a little more since.Where she been at all this time?? She just mad cuz she didnt get all this when she did it 20 yrs back

  51. Jennifer has always made those faces while performing – particularly while during this song so I don’t know why people are laughing at it lol. Ok maybe I do know why, because she’s all up in the camera and she looks hella weird.

But I think she sounds good, will always do good, and no one can out sing her on this.

  52. Melany

What the FUCK was THAT shit!!!!!!!LMAO!!!!!

  53. She has always made that twisted up look when singing, but regardless you can’t take her talent away and no one has sung that song like her. Jhud did a good job, but Ms. Holiday was great when she did it originally.

  54. I like Jennifer Hud.’s version better, I just don’t know why. Jennifer Holliday’s version is amazing too, but this whole performance seems forced. I know that this legend can do much better.
