Here is the video that has been circulating the web for the past couple of days. It features Jennifer Holliday (the original Effie White) performing her signature song, “And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going” on the red carpet at the Academy Awards.
Well she needs to “go” somewhere with this version, because she looks crazy as hell. I mean this video is very painful to watch, and I don’t know who even approved it for the air. Whatever the case, it has now made its mark in the WTF files.

Um, I didn’t see anything wrong with the performance…The song is heartfelt so it’s not like she was going to be able to stand all pretty and sing it. It’s not that kind of song.

I liked the performance, J. Holliday still has soul! As it has been said already if anyone has seen her earlier performances on Youtube, you would know how she performs.
It’s a broadway thing. On the stage you’re so far from the audience you have to exaggerate your movements, including facial expressions, in order to look like you’re doing anything. She’s just using broadway technique on a camera close up. Doesn’t LOOK the best but it sounded damn fine!

I didn’t think she sounded that bad. She still owns this song imo. No one can take that away from her. Others may sing it but she SANG IT.

That was excellent , Jennifer Holiday deserves more respect than that. I guess Angel must be a little girl or teenager cuase , Jennifer Holiday is a mega star and if it wasnt for her Jennifer Hudson would not have been nominated for the Oscar , because she was portraying Effie who was originally played by Ms. Jennifer Holiday, who had surgery to lose weight that is why she is so thin, but the woman can blow her ass off she sound great. I think you need to maybe clean the ears out .
Sometimes the second version is better than the first. This is one of those times.
Remember, this is a BROADWAY song. It requires a big performance with animated gestures and faces. She sounded great! Her version is still much more emotional, touching, and soulful than Jhud’s R & B version.
You (concrete loop editor) are so childish at times. I know that you like/love/are in love with JHud and that she can do no wrong to you (the Oscar dress mishap excluded — but even then you blamed her stylist, when in fact it is her that has the ultimate say), but you don’t have to tear someone down to bring someone up. I think it is said that we can not share in the success of our fellow artists. JHolliday had her time to shine and she should count her blessings for that. I just think that it is sad and desperate to perform on the top of a rooftop the same day that jHudson is to be at the Academy Awards. Almost as if she was trying to show JHudson up or something. Well I am telling you–she sounded a hot mess. God bless her for writing the part of effie, but she needs to learn to set back and let her younger counterparts pay respect to her without her feeling like she has to be the one to shine. I am praying for Jholliday, she has some issues—nothing to hard for god though
I thought everyone knows she is the original. It’s like that’s the only accomplishment in her life and she has to continuously relive and bring it up again and again. I agree her voice is moving and more powerful than anything seen on the stage. But why didn’t she do more? She should use that energy to make some new fresh music and join in some upcomming broadway perfomances. I don’t understand her. She could have gone even further in her career but why stop at a Tony in Dreamgirls. Why not have pushed that talent further beyond?

She did her thing singing that song… She is a Broadway actress and they are trained to have serious contol of their vocals by mouth and diaphram movements.. She has seriuos breathe control.. Plus she performed that song way better than J Hud or Frenchy or anyone else for that matter.. This woman is the real Dream Girl so stand up…Peace

There’s no reason for anyone to take away the credit that is due. I saw Jennifer Holliday sing that song in Dreamgirls…in a clip of course on Youtube, nevertheless, it was excellent. This is Ms. Holliday’s song.
For example, Lorretta Devine was in Dreamgirls too, and no one can sing those songs like she did. Although, Ms. Rose has a supurb voice.
I just think that Jennifer Holliday, should feel more honored than offended.

I watched an old clip of Jennifer Holliday doing this song a long time ago earlier today, and the faces she made were not as contorted and exagerated as they were during the Oscar performance. AND, she didn’t end the song like she did here either. I love J. Holliday. This woman can “sang” but I really felt she tried to overdo it here. I agree 120% with what #10 (rebuildneworleans) said.
Well, close your eyes and just listen, then!!! Her version of this song still moves me. I’m glad for Jennifer Hudson, but Jennifer Holliday is still the best. And she can still sing it! Go girl!!!

I never respond to these post but in this case i had to. They both are very talented, however you must remember that J. Holiday performed that song for over a year LIVE five nights a week on Broadway. J. Hudson sang the song in a movie (we have no idea how may takes she had). Today with technology anybody (Ciara, B. Knowles, etc…) can sound good on record. I think you should listen to Broadway version and Soundtrack before you make a judgement….Lastly Anika can really out sang the both B. Knowles and J. Hudson, I saw her on Braaodway….LIVE.
I just saw the broadway version of J-Holiday on youtube. And I am telling you that lady right there blows any other versions, no disrespect to J-Hud, out of the universe. WOW! Major Major props and admiration to J-Holiday. Her version is the best such raw talent which is lacking in today’s generation. Again WOW!

it is it me or @ times didn’t she sound like the cookie monster. i’m not tryna be funny but sumtimes her voice sounded really rough. her vocal range and holdin all the notes were perfection but she could have turned it down a notch with the roughness of her voice.
She reminded me of Sammy Davis Jr. I can understand why she would “over do it” because she’s sort of in the background now, and she’s the one who made that song famous. Simply put, she over sang the song…but the girl can sang, there was never any doubt about that. And compared to the way she used to look, she looks great! I don’t know about the vibrato on that last note though with the wobbly jaw. I bet she could tear up a hamburger.
