AMY WINEHOUSE: BACK TO BLACK!

Friday, March 16, 2007

amywinehouse.jpg

powered by ODEO

Many have named Amy Winehouse the “White Lauryn Hill,” but I think she’s so much more than that. And Questlove of the Roots, himself, acclaimed that “this is the album Lauryn Hill wanted to make.” A bold statement, true indeed, but I couldn’t agree more. “Back to Black,” Amy Winehouse’s dark and soulful sophomore set came out just this Tuesday, but has critics and fans reeling. Amy Winehouse, already claiming the spot for #1 album in the UK, finally released the Salaam Remi & Mark Ronson-produced “Back to Black” in the States this week, although her US single, “Rehab” was released in October of ‘06. “Back to Black” is nothing short of a masterpiece. Amy’s sick with the pen and the vocals are serious. This girl is nothing to mess with.

Check out more Amy Winehouse on her official site, amywinehouse.com.

Make sure you check out Amy’s videos for “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good.” And be sure to check her out on MySpace and show her some love. This girl is truly talented.

Amy Winehouse - You Know I’m No Good

Amy Winehouse is a really talented girl. Seriously, her and Robin Thicke are giving me what I need these days. Recently, I’ve been bumping blue-eyed soul. It’s a crazy thing to hear this amazing voice and material come from this girl. If you’re interested in purchasing “Back to Black” after hearing these tracks, it’s in stores now, or you can log on to Amazon.com to ship you a copy. But don’t sleep on her first album, “Frank.” It’s hot too.

Amy Winehouse … is a talented singer … i just got the album yesterday and its extremely soulful its this something that i think r&b is missing … not anything like lauryn hill but the type of r&b i would love to see her do … like with her single doo wop … amy can only get better than this

This girl is definitely talented and her music is pure fiyah!!! I didn’t find out about her recently and I already am a fan!!! I’m loving her bluesy/jazzy voice and the realness of her lyrics… I love a singer whose lyrics actually have meaning other than a bunch of cute rhyming words… I will be getting this album this weekend!

She’s very talented, she’s far better than Joss Stone, but she’s not touching Lauryn lyrics or production wise, not in a million years!! Nowhere near Lauryn’s level. I have YET to find a chick as bad as LAuryn when it comes to lyrical content. Undethroned since ‘98.

10.

David

Friday, March 16, 2007 /

Why do people always gotta HYPE stuff like this?

Shorty is dope and she’s talented, but I don’t know why artists can’t just be hot. Instead, they gotta compare them to legends and make false claims.

ANYONE who thinks this chick is BETTER than Lauryn, and will drop an album BETTER and MORE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED than The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is either:

1. Retarded
2. On drugs
3. Crazy and belongs in rehab with Britney Spears.

It’s THAT simple

We all know Lauryn Hill is dope, but calling this girl the White Lauryn Hill ain’t even neccessary, just say she is next to her,not the next, but next to her.She got a nice thing going.I didn’t even know Salaam Remi/Mark Ronson produced some of her album.

LH we miss you!

lol, @ #16… You know when a white artist comes along and performs above and beyond the norm, people gotta try and make them seem as though they are on levels they clearly are not on… The girl is good but there is only one Lauryn… black, white, or otherwise!

17.

Friday, March 16, 2007 /

@ Red, I’m saying!Stop giving soooo much credit, just give credit don’t drop your drawls every time and call her the “White” Lauryn Hill, lol.I’m not saying she isn’t good but damn we can see she good, lol.But I understand the spark of debate for attention.

And we know that Lauryn Hill had one studio album, but that album is straight up real.

Questluv is about to make me not like his ass for saying some BULLSHIT like that. If I’m ever anywhere near him I’m slapping his ass for that shit.”This is the album Lauryn wanted to make” this nigga must of been high when he said that shit and he KNOWS better.Don’t get me wrong I like her album got it the day after it came out but she DOES NOT COMPARE TO Ms. Hill. Her music like most soul artist, lyrical is mainly about love and relationships(nothing wrong with that at all) and it’s well written but Lauryn was about SO MUCH MORE than that especially the unplugged album. QuestLuv done really pissed me of with that statement because by saying this is the album Lauryn wanted to make he’s saying she’s better than Lauryn and to take a word from the subtitle of her song Me and Mr. Jones that is pure “FUCKERY”.

And her and Lauryn have totally different styles. Lauryns music was never jazz inspired hers clearly is. Lauyrns vocals were very soulful and that’s really all that connects them. Lauryn was more hip hop/soul and more contemparary sound. Her music is a straight up throw back to the jazz era of music from the 1920, 30, and 40. But as much as I love Lauryn I’m loving her vocals alittle bit more but as an all around artist she still ain’t on Lauryns level.Damn, I know most of the main stream music ain’t what it use to be even a decade ago but people are really reaching with this girl. OK I’m done.

37.

Are you fucking kidding me? Yeah her music is good, she can sing but to compare her to LAURYN HILL the superior singer AND lyricist, thats ridiculous. The Miseducation… is a classic. Even her unplugged album was the shit.

I swear QuestLove said “This is the album Lauryn wanted to make.” To call Amy the White LH… It’s just better not to label it like that.

Amy Winehouse and Ms Dynamite… Two different genres/roots.

But yep, Amy’s representing the UK/LDN nicely round about now. I’ll buy her a pint when shes back! LOL.

45.

Chanté

Friday, March 16, 2007 /

Didn’t QuestLove also praise Joss Stone? First Joss is called the white Aretha Franklin, now that broad is the white Lauryn Hill. Imagine if Ashanti was white, peeps would call her “baby baby baby” profound poetry that could put Jill Scott to shame.

The closest thing to Lauryn Hill is a UK act recently signed to John Legend’s new label “Home School” for her sophomore, and her name is Estelle SWARAY. She’s a gifted singer/rapper. Her first album is GREAT.

That’s her wikipedia page :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estelle_(singer)

And her myspace :
http://www.myspace.com/stellarents
(”Hey Girl” is a song she did with John Legend on her first album)

Nobody can be as dope as Lauryn but Estelle’s the closest thing to Lauryn right now.

Amy is the White, well Jewish Amy Whinehouse. She’s doin’ her own thing and that should just be it. I guess you can thank CL for introducing her to those who haven’t heard her yet, otherwise, I think you should be pushing talented Black female vocalists, who get no play (no more Cassie or Bitch Boy leaked music, please!!!!). Amy’s record company has a big promotional push for her. She’s big in the UK, so I think they would do justice by committing some $$ to get her heard in the US. She’s in a ’50s/60s Faster Pussycat Kill Kill type of mode now, not the same as Lauryn.

But watch out, cause this seems to be the latest move, to import White voices, as if no soulful sisters are hitting the mark with the music and lyrics. Also, Black folks, and I don’t mean to lecture y’all, but we need to get off the beaten path to make sure we are not drowned by a sea of incessant garbage music thats being channeled via BET and every Urban/Hip Hop Radio Station. There are a lot of great artists toiling at their craft without the benefit of mainstream radio airplay, cuss and cut lyrics, and lacefront wigs!!!!!! So, the next time you go to the record store or to Amazon, challenge yourself to listen to some one different within your favorite genre and then some one outside of your genre.

CL bring us a mix of artists, our Hip Hoppers, some old schoolers tryin’ to do new things, Neo Soul, Int’l artists of African descent, whatever. Challenge us, I know you’ll get “critical” feedback!

Brian, I was just thinking about emailing you the other day to ask you to put some spotlight on this chick. She is something serious!! I believe she and Robin Thicke are bringing R&B/Soul back!! With all the crap that people have chosen to bump in their stereos these days, it’s so refreshing to hear somebody with some real talent. I hope this is just the beginning of something big that’s about to hit the music world.

Ayo chick is good, but she is not on a Lauryn Hill level, especially the post Miseducation Lauryn, her more recent studio recordings are exceeding some legends levels. Her lyrics, sound, everything.

Awhile back i gave a youtube link for her song, the Passion, here it is again.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zEjKtEHAGs
Tell me which artist is even coming close to this.
If link doesn’t work, just go to youtube and find it.

It’s a shame though. I’m all for diversity and no discrimination, but people are push Joss, Amy, Robin, Justin while all TOO MANY of our gifted artists need some more shine : Governor, Heather Headley, Gaelle, Amel Larrieux, Elisabeth Withers, Sunshine Anderson, Hil St. Soul, Dwele, Marsha of Floetry, Anthony David, Lyfe Jennings,Van Hunt,Kindred The Family Soul, Leela James. Just a few names to think about.

Some of the lyrics from “Me and Mr Jones (fuckery)” on Back to Black album. She is singing about being messed about by a guy!! Every song on her album will mean something to someone on this album, she writes her own songs about her stormy love life!

What kind of fuckery is this?
You made me miss the Slick Rick gig
You thought I didn’t love you when I did
Can’t believe you played me out like that

What kind of fuckery are we?
Nowadays you don’t mean dick to me I might let you make it up to me
Who’s playing Saturday?

What kind of fuckery are you?
Side from Sammy you’re my best black Jew
But I could swear that we were through
I still want to wonder ’bout the things you do

i copped her album on itunes a few days ago, but i’ve been hearing the buzz on her for a couple of months. the woman’s voice is so filled with genuine sorrow and raw emotion, you just can’t help but relate to and identify with her. you can truly associate your painful experiences with hers, because you know she’s coming from a real place. and i think her personal style (1960’s mod with a touch of goth and emo) only makes her more fascinating. i have listened to “you know i’m no good” at LEAST 20 times in the past 3 days, and the rest of her songs are on regular rotation. i also love that she found a lot of inspiration in 50’s and 60’s songs, i love songs from that era too, and it’s nice to see someone else around my age embrace that era’s music.

i don’t also think it’s fair to say that she’s the “next” lauryn hill because:

1.lauryn hill IS NOT GONE, and even if she was, she’s irreplaceable

2. each one of them sincerely has their own distinctive style and voice and they are both powerful singers in their own right, so why should one singer demote the other? because one has “new” material out? please, some of lauryn’s music sounds as fresh and as relevant as the first time i heard it. either way, i’d rather listen to amy winehouse and lauryn hill all day than some blase, cookie-cutter, bullshit music from groups like brick & lace. (even that ridiculous name makes me roll my eyes. who they fuck are trying trying to bamboozle into buying their music?).

here’s hoping that we see more innovation and soul from new AND etablished music artists.

I dig Joss’ album a little more since we’re going to make that comparison even though I think they’re completely different artists and the only thing they have in common is the color of their skin. Joss’ album is just more raw to me, and no, singing about alcoholism doesn’t make your album “Raw” (It’s a more uptempo and natural album, and Joss’ vocals far outclass Amy’s).

But Amy’s album is amazing too. Black artists better be on their shit because artists like Joss and Amy are bringing NEW ish to the game, not that same, rehashed product we’re getting from just about every artist

I got Amy’s cd the same day as Luvanmusiq and I hate to admit it but I am definitely feeling Back In Black more. The whole cd is just sick!!!!! There is no one out there like this now. She is definitely a break from the commercial norm on our airwaves now. I like the nostalgic and tragic feel of her music. It reminds me of great ARTISTS of the past like Dinah Washington and Billie Holiday. You feel the raw emotion in the words and Amy’s voice. That is definitely what pulls you in.

Amy is great, dont sleep on her. Proud she’s flying the UK flag, but i wouldnt compared her to Lauryn Hill at all. Dont sleep on Lauryn also, when that girl is ready to comeback, i think she will shock the life out of everyone. Loved Amy’s first album to death (FRANK), it dosent even play in my CD properly no more, as i have played it so many times lol

I’ve been a fan of Amy Winehouse since her first album,”Frank”, which is excellent!. I think the girl is what a proper artist should be. She’s not trying to be anything, she doesn’t look typical, she doesn’t act typical and her music is not typical. Love her or hate her, the last thing you’re gonna do when you hear her music is roll your eyes and think ‘just another wannabe’. I’m glad she’s making moves in the US, there is a lot of variety and talent here in the UK it’s about time people get to know! The BRITS are coming! Go Amy!!!

Tortured Artist???

I love Amy’s music (I copped that CD first day out, on good faith) I was dissapointed at the too few tracklist, but was “okay” with the poetic content. Amy is a true artist and could probably be developed into so much more with the right people behind her. I dig her writing (filthy lyrics and all), and her voice is her own. I give her a B+ and predict that next time around she’ll come with her A game… if all that damn drinking don’t kill her first.

Her name couldn’t be more appropriate. (LOL)

I Love the retro jazzy & contemporary poetic twist. My Fave’s are “You know i’m no good”, “Back to black”, and “Wake up Alone”.

Amy is a wild child and i hope she doesnt ruin her talent. I know some of you may think i just want to say something bad about the girl. BUT i am actually saying something good. Amy has a GREAT voice, soulful and she can only get better JUST as long as she can stay clean.
