AMY WINEHOUSE: BACK TO BLACK!

Friday, March 16, 2007

amywinehouse.jpg

powered by ODEO

Many have named Amy Winehouse the “White Lauryn Hill,” but I think she’s so much more than that. And Questlove of the Roots, himself, acclaimed that “this is the album Lauryn Hill wanted to make.” A bold statement, true indeed, but I couldn’t agree more. “Back to Black,” Amy Winehouse’s dark and soulful sophomore set came out just this Tuesday, but has critics and fans reeling. Amy Winehouse, already claiming the spot for #1 album in the UK, finally released the Salaam Remi & Mark Ronson-produced “Back to Black” in the States this week, although her US single, “Rehab” was released in October of ‘06. “Back to Black” is nothing short of a masterpiece. Amy’s sick with the pen and the vocals are serious. This girl is nothing to mess with.

Check out more Amy Winehouse on her official site, amywinehouse.com.

Make sure you check out Amy’s videos for “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good.” And be sure to check her out on MySpace and show her some love. This girl is truly talented.

Amy Winehouse - You Know I’m No Good

Amy Winehouse is a really talented girl. Seriously, her and Robin Thicke are giving me what I need these days. Recently, I’ve been bumping blue-eyed soul. It’s a crazy thing to hear this amazing voice and material come from this girl. If you’re interested in purchasing “Back to Black” after hearing these tracks, it’s in stores now, or you can log on to Amazon.com to ship you a copy. But don’t sleep on her first album, “Frank.” It’s hot too.

#152 They are a lot of Black people that lived raised and Born in the UK and I am one of them.

Naomi Campbell is also a fellow Brit.

Amy is a huge fan of Nas and the song is an Ode to him about her lover getting in the way of her going to a Nas concert. If you heard her interviews and read the reviews you would know that.

Damn….We get it. She’s not Lauryn Hill. She’s definitely killing most of the artists in the forefront. I don’t feel she’s doing too much at all. That is her voice. She’s not doing all those Mariah Carey circa 1991 runs. Less is definitely more. I guess because I myself am an alcoholic heroin addict with a eating disorder, I dig her rawness.

#152 I hope you realize that there are Black people who live in the UK, Germany etc. We don’t only reside in America.

Amy Winehouse is the shit , but I don’t think America will embrace it they like Bubble gum music like Beyonce whose sales here in the UK are not impressive.

Very well said BTW Mariah may have a lot of octaves but I also like more raw singers like Aretha and Amy anyday over a multitude of octaves with thin voices a la Mariah.

BRIAN, you might not have been the first to make the comparison, but it certainly sounded like you endorsed them. You noted you “couldn’t agree more” that amy winehouse’s album is the album lauryn hill wanted to make. Really? You’re in talks with Lauryn, and she said this is the album she wanted to make?

Your most recent comment sounds like a BACKTRACK to me. I’d have more respect for you as a music reviewer if you at least held your ground. I do understand why you wouln’t want to though: you’ve made a baseless, silly comparison, and most folks on here don’t agree with you.

162.

She’s alright but I think you are giving her waaaay too much credit.
(Could you just have a thing for blue eyes?)Her songs are mediocre at best. Yes, she has an old school (umm Motown-ish) flavor. But that alone doesn’t make her Aretha or Gladys (or even Lauryn for that matter). Lyrically, nice… and a little more mature than most of what’s out… but that’s more a product of being exposed to the UK cultural scene than anything else. I mean, y’all sleep on sistahs like Amel & Angie who do it all the time. Her vocals=bland(no range). I mean it’s likeable, but she AIN’T on Robin Thicke’s level yet. Be for real.

To: The New Yorker

Judging from how defensive you sound you must be white but Bmore has issuses don’t take it personal. But in response to everything else you said. Lauyrn made the album she wanted to make and should have made. Like I said before Amy’s album is a throw back album done very well but Christina did the same thing just poorer.Lauryn could have done that easy but I doubt Amy could have done what Lauryn did production wise and definately not lyrically.

And Beyonce’s artistc vision is what she has presented through her music and videos just as Amy or Ciara have presented their’s through their music and videos. I don’t even know what you even meant by that but there you go it’s pretty simple. People need to stop equating artistry with genres there are people in every genres making good and bad music.

And lastly to the couple of people who said Lauryn is overrated. I have a question for you. Who do you think isn’t? Just wondering.

Damn, y’all have some MAJOR race issues…Would you have such a problem with the Lauryn Hill comparison if Amy was Black?

Some people are so caught up with the fact that she’s not Black that you can’t even listen to the music itself. It just KILLS you to give a non-Black person props.

And stop it with that whole “white people are stealing our music bullshit.” MUSIC HAS NO COLOR. Ray Charles did country music, remember? Let’s not limit ourselves because of the color of our skin.

AND I BET IF AMY WAS BLACK SINGING THE EXACT SAME MUSIC Y’ALL WOULD BE PRAISING HER UP AND DOWN. SMH.

I am sooooo f’ing mad that anyone would compare Amy “crystal meth face” Winehouse to Lauryn Hill are you crazy. this is typical of Black people. Because she is a rich jewish girl who can sing “black” she will always receive more praise than the million black people who can sing 10 times better and actually are real this chick is a mess and an attention seeking druggie who wears the same clothes for seven days straight . we always gotta bring our own down( Beyonce) and big up people like this poor little rich jewish girl.what the fvvvck she doesn’t reach my heart when she sings at all!!! you are all buggin’.

It`s always a nigga who has to show he/she ain`t racist by saying some stupid shit. Niggas should learn from white people. Look at Justin Timberfucker.. he gets called racist all the time, do you think he is gonna try win any niggas over? Hell no, if we think he`s racist, he don`t give a shit. After all we`re only niggas and we`re gonna purchase his music regardless. Take a look at Paris Hilton, loads of people call her racist, even to her face. Does she give a shit? Nope. Why? Because her fellow white people are gonna love her anyway, and she don`t need nobody elses love.

Amy is Jewish, and does it matter if she isn’t black?
And i don’t get all the fuzz about the resemblences.
When she came out with Frank, it was Erykah Badu. Now it is Lauryn Hill.
Big whoop?

She is a true artist, writing and composing her own music.

I was afraid of this, that her commercial breaktrough and succes could destroy her reputation and what she truly stands for.

And i’m a bit surprised that you US folks like Corinne Bailey Rae so much, she and her music are boring as hell.

And the wikipedia story about Amy doing the new James Bond tune was not true, she said it herself in an interview, it was blown out of proportion.

#154 Yes I know there are Black people in Britain, there are black people everywhere. I love my British cousins…but that wasn’t the point of my comment!!!

Our history of music in America is infused with racism. Yes Ray Charles and other Black artists sung country music and what did they say..”why that nigger sanging our music”!!!!

But I know I can only take this convo so far on this site. Some of my people don’t know music outside of what’s on BET or what’s posted on Concrete Loop!!!

@ ME

that’s funny. surprise surprise i’m actually black

i’m not saying that MOLH was not a good album. I didn’t care for it much but I still respect it. That was the album, that as you said, Hill wanted to make and made. However, concept-wise this should’ve been her follow up to MOLH

and the other point i was trying to make was against people who said that Winehouse was taking shine away from better black artists when there are also black artists in the mainstream that are taking away shine from these artists.that’s not Amy’s fault.

and by artistic vision, i mean when people actually have something artistic to bring to the table. though Amy’s music isn’t new, it’s different in the mainstream right now and you can see her artistic vision. someone called it retro R&B, perfect term for it. Bey is from a different genre but what artistic vision does she have? she can sing her ass off and comes out with danceable music, but does she say anything of importance? is she someone that you would listen to and say “damn how the hell did she come up with this (lyrics, concept, etc.)?” missy elliott is a perfect example of being artistic

This picture isn’t showing the bigger issue…the woman is like 90lb’s soaking wet. This because of her rampant drug use. Check out her pics on perezhilton.com of her getting busted snorting cocaine a few weeks ago…priceless!

Not to mention for her North American tour, she threw up on stage not once, but twice on two seperate concert dates from drinking and partying. She needs to get some help.

Yes, white people can be soulful. To say that only black people have soul has to be the “ignorant quote” of the day. And so what, blue-eyed-soul is making a come back? I know that a lot of you closet racists would rather hear bullshit about bullshit artists like Beyonce and Rhianna, rather than real R&B that just so happens to come from a white person. (And until Beyonce can do something on the level of Amy’s Fuck Me Pumps, instead of Freakum Dress she’ll remain a bullshit artist)

I can understand the LH/AW comparision. I listened to several of her tracks and noticed how similar they can be vocally. There were a few time where I listened and thought about LHill. But seriously, they’re completely different. As much as I loved the MisEd. of LHill, it’s overrated, in fact she’s overrated. She does one album and everyone acts as if it’s the gospel truth that can never be surpassed. LHill’s solo work isn’t legendary, if anything it’s a flash in the pan.

138- I sure as hell hope you kept the receipts, because you can’t type or spell for shit. I think UoL seriously needs to re-think their admissions policy. Just about ever other word is spelled wrong, and I’m not even going to start about your grammar.

nicholeoleoleo said:”Yes, white people can be soulful. To say that only black people have soul has to be the “ignorant quote” of the day. And so what, blue-eyed-soul is making a come back?”

Blue-eyed never went anywhere….

White people get soul from listening to Black music, it’s not naturally a part of their culture. So my comment does not come from a place of ignorance. I never said it was impossible to mimic.

And since when did Beyonce become a bullshit artist? Her music is plain and simple…its POP. That’s the music that keeps the industry afloat.

On the real, everybody can’t be all deep and shit, strumming a guitar, its more to life and music than just that. Sometimes you just want to have fun and keep it simple. You know hit the up the club and dance!!! And chicks be freaking out when Bee comes on, and they play Irreplaceable in the club and its like a sea of hands. So I only take the Beyonce diss but so far, give the woman come credit.

And Lauryn Hill a flash in the pan…Ummm Nuh!!! That’s not what that term means. If she was she wouldn’t be the comparison.
Did people forget Lauryn is a MC as well? Amy don’t rock the mic and what movie was she in?

Rockwell is a flash in the pan. Artists you wouldn’t know off the top of your head. Like who’s going to remember Amy Winehouse in 5 years. Tell Questlove to holla at Res or Mystic or Leela James for the matter, before bigging up this chick.

Are we still going crazy over white people just because the sound soulful? It’s 2007 - this sh*t still blows my mind. Okay the girl has soul….and…?

I don’t find anything creative or compelling about her music, it’s very predictable and self indulgent. Entertaining - YES, Earth shattering - NO. Too much hype if you ask me. Black or white…this is nothing new or innovative and yes, like everything else, it’s all been done before.

And for the Lauren Hill comparison. Lauren is not my gold standard when it comes to vocalists, but her debut album and the Fugees prior work was much more creative and inspiring and when it come to vocalist no one tops my girl Jill. You can tune a piano to her voice, she’s one of the only singers that acting sing notes pitch perfect.

And please stop with this “black artists better step up their gam crap”. There are plenty of black artists making underground music that is souful, creative, innovative and can blow Amy, Lauren and a whole bunch of other people out the box. The only difference is when a white artists can do it just as well as you, you are no longer neccesary - period. Don’t believe me, just look at the history of the music industry. Remember this is a business and a white girl with soul is much more novel than a black one - just look at how people on this site are on her shit.

^^^I hate when people put other artists down to praise other artists. Rhianna and beyonce are pop artists and in no shape or form should be compared to Amy who is not in the same genre of music. There is no such thing as “Black music” or “white music”. Me being a music fanatic and critic, it seems like everyone has to put music in a box. Music is music, music is art, music is an art form and even though labeled, should not be limited to a certain race or gender, color of people…..ect.

I like AMy, I think she has a unique sound. She is NOT a vocalist, but she illicts a response and she dares to be different it seems.

#54…I am feelin you on that, but I have all of those albums as well. At first liten I was hooked, this girl is GOOD!!! I actually went to youtube and watched all of her clips and she sounds good in ALL of them, live or studio…I LOVE Black music but I also LOVE good music and with some of the pure foolishness being funneled through our community it is refreshing sometimes to find something different…Amy is definately not Lauryn Hill, but damn I would love to hear them on a track together…now THAT would be ill!!!

The girl is a straight meth/crack/cocaine head!

I don’t see why they are comparing her to L. Hill.

This album is OK, but her previous album is alot better. People always want to jump on someones bandwagon…Some of yall love yourselves some ‘blue eyed’ soul!

People jumped on Joss Stone’s bandwagon when she reached the US…”oh she’s soulful for a white chick”…the same thing is happening with Amy’s cocaine ridden ass!
