AMY WINEHOUSE: BACK TO BLACK!
Friday, March 16, 2007

powered by ODEO
Many have named Amy Winehouse the “White Lauryn Hill,” but I think she’s so much more than that. And Questlove of the Roots, himself, acclaimed that “this is the album Lauryn Hill wanted to make.” A bold statement, true indeed, but I couldn’t agree more. “Back to Black,” Amy Winehouse’s dark and soulful sophomore set came out just this Tuesday, but has critics and fans reeling. Amy Winehouse, already claiming the spot for #1 album in the UK, finally released the Salaam Remi & Mark Ronson-produced “Back to Black” in the States this week, although her US single, “Rehab” was released in October of ‘06. “Back to Black” is nothing short of a masterpiece. Amy’s sick with the pen and the vocals are serious. This girl is nothing to mess with.
Check out more Amy Winehouse on her official site, amywinehouse.com.
Make sure you check out Amy’s videos for “Rehab” and “You Know I’m No Good.” And be sure to check her out on MySpace and show her some love. This girl is truly talented.

Amy Winehouse - You Know I’m No Good
Amy Winehouse is a really talented girl. Seriously, her and Robin Thicke are giving me what I need these days. Recently, I’ve been bumping blue-eyed soul. It’s a crazy thing to hear this amazing voice and material come from this girl. If you’re interested in purchasing “Back to Black” after hearing these tracks, it’s in stores now, or you can log on to Amazon.com to ship you a copy. But don’t sleep on her first album, “Frank.” It’s hot too.

This girl is definitely talented and her music is pure fiyah!!! I didn’t find out about her recently and I already am a fan!!! I’m loving her bluesy/jazzy voice and the realness of her lyrics… I love a singer whose lyrics actually have meaning other than a bunch of cute rhyming words… I will be getting this album this weekend!

She’s very talented, she’s far better than Joss Stone, but she’s not touching Lauryn lyrics or production wise, not in a million years!! Nowhere near Lauryn’s level. I have YET to find a chick as bad as LAuryn when it comes to lyrical content. Undethroned since ‘98.

Why do people always gotta HYPE stuff like this?
Shorty is dope and she’s talented, but I don’t know why artists can’t just be hot. Instead, they gotta compare them to legends and make false claims.
ANYONE who thinks this chick is BETTER than Lauryn, and will drop an album BETTER and MORE CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED than The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill is either:
1. Retarded
2. On drugs
3. Crazy and belongs in rehab with Britney Spears.
It’s THAT simple

Questluv is about to make me not like his ass for saying some BULLSHIT like that. If I’m ever anywhere near him I’m slapping his ass for that shit.”This is the album Lauryn wanted to make” this nigga must of been high when he said that shit and he KNOWS better.Don’t get me wrong I like her album got it the day after it came out but she DOES NOT COMPARE TO Ms. Hill. Her music like most soul artist, lyrical is mainly about love and relationships(nothing wrong with that at all) and it’s well written but Lauryn was about SO MUCH MORE than that especially the unplugged album. QuestLuv done really pissed me of with that statement because by saying this is the album Lauryn wanted to make he’s saying she’s better than Lauryn and to take a word from the subtitle of her song Me and Mr. Jones that is pure “FUCKERY”.

And her and Lauryn have totally different styles. Lauryns music was never jazz inspired hers clearly is. Lauyrns vocals were very soulful and that’s really all that connects them. Lauryn was more hip hop/soul and more contemparary sound. Her music is a straight up throw back to the jazz era of music from the 1920, 30, and 40. But as much as I love Lauryn I’m loving her vocals alittle bit more but as an all around artist she still ain’t on Lauryns level.Damn, I know most of the main stream music ain’t what it use to be even a decade ago but people are really reaching with this girl. OK I’m done.

Didn’t QuestLove also praise Joss Stone? First Joss is called the white Aretha Franklin, now that broad is the white Lauryn Hill. Imagine if Ashanti was white, peeps would call her “baby baby baby” profound poetry that could put Jill Scott to shame.
The closest thing to Lauryn Hill is a UK act recently signed to John Legend’s new label “Home School” for her sophomore, and her name is Estelle SWARAY. She’s a gifted singer/rapper. Her first album is GREAT.
That’s her wikipedia page :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estelle_(singer)
And her myspace :
http://www.myspace.com/stellarents
(”Hey Girl” is a song she did with John Legend on her first album)
Nobody can be as dope as Lauryn but Estelle’s the closest thing to Lauryn right now.

Amy is the White, well Jewish Amy Whinehouse. She’s doin’ her own thing and that should just be it. I guess you can thank CL for introducing her to those who haven’t heard her yet, otherwise, I think you should be pushing talented Black female vocalists, who get no play (no more Cassie or Bitch Boy leaked music, please!!!!). Amy’s record company has a big promotional push for her. She’s big in the UK, so I think they would do justice by committing some $$ to get her heard in the US. She’s in a ’50s/60s Faster Pussycat Kill Kill type of mode now, not the same as Lauryn.
But watch out, cause this seems to be the latest move, to import White voices, as if no soulful sisters are hitting the mark with the music and lyrics. Also, Black folks, and I don’t mean to lecture y’all, but we need to get off the beaten path to make sure we are not drowned by a sea of incessant garbage music thats being channeled via BET and every Urban/Hip Hop Radio Station. There are a lot of great artists toiling at their craft without the benefit of mainstream radio airplay, cuss and cut lyrics, and lacefront wigs!!!!!! So, the next time you go to the record store or to Amazon, challenge yourself to listen to some one different within your favorite genre and then some one outside of your genre.
CL bring us a mix of artists, our Hip Hoppers, some old schoolers tryin’ to do new things, Neo Soul, Int’l artists of African descent, whatever. Challenge us, I know you’ll get “critical” feedback!

Ayo chick is good, but she is not on a Lauryn Hill level, especially the post Miseducation Lauryn, her more recent studio recordings are exceeding some legends levels. Her lyrics, sound, everything.
Awhile back i gave a youtube link for her song, the Passion, here it is again.

Some of the lyrics from “Me and Mr Jones (fuckery)” on Back to Black album. She is singing about being messed about by a guy!! Every song on her album will mean something to someone on this album, she writes her own songs about her stormy love life!
What kind of fuckery is this?
You made me miss the Slick Rick gig
You thought I didn’t love you when I did
Can’t believe you played me out like that
What kind of fuckery are we?
Nowadays you don’t mean dick to me I might let you make it up to me
Who’s playing Saturday?
What kind of fuckery are you?
Side from Sammy you’re my best black Jew
But I could swear that we were through
I still want to wonder ’bout the things you do

i copped her album on itunes a few days ago, but i’ve been hearing the buzz on her for a couple of months. the woman’s voice is so filled with genuine sorrow and raw emotion, you just can’t help but relate to and identify with her. you can truly associate your painful experiences with hers, because you know she’s coming from a real place. and i think her personal style (1960’s mod with a touch of goth and emo) only makes her more fascinating. i have listened to “you know i’m no good” at LEAST 20 times in the past 3 days, and the rest of her songs are on regular rotation. i also love that she found a lot of inspiration in 50’s and 60’s songs, i love songs from that era too, and it’s nice to see someone else around my age embrace that era’s music.
i don’t also think it’s fair to say that she’s the “next” lauryn hill because:
1.lauryn hill IS NOT GONE, and even if she was, she’s irreplaceable
2. each one of them sincerely has their own distinctive style and voice and they are both powerful singers in their own right, so why should one singer demote the other? because one has “new” material out? please, some of lauryn’s music sounds as fresh and as relevant as the first time i heard it. either way, i’d rather listen to amy winehouse and lauryn hill all day than some blase, cookie-cutter, bullshit music from groups like brick & lace. (even that ridiculous name makes me roll my eyes. who they fuck are trying trying to bamboozle into buying their music?).
here’s hoping that we see more innovation and soul from new AND etablished music artists.

I dig Joss’ album a little more since we’re going to make that comparison even though I think they’re completely different artists and the only thing they have in common is the color of their skin. Joss’ album is just more raw to me, and no, singing about alcoholism doesn’t make your album “Raw” (It’s a more uptempo and natural album, and Joss’ vocals far outclass Amy’s).
But Amy’s album is amazing too. Black artists better be on their shit because artists like Joss and Amy are bringing NEW ish to the game, not that same, rehashed product we’re getting from just about every artist

I got Amy’s cd the same day as Luvanmusiq and I hate to admit it but I am definitely feeling Back In Black more. The whole cd is just sick!!!!! There is no one out there like this now. She is definitely a break from the commercial norm on our airwaves now. I like the nostalgic and tragic feel of her music. It reminds me of great ARTISTS of the past like Dinah Washington and Billie Holiday. You feel the raw emotion in the words and Amy’s voice. That is definitely what pulls you in.

I’ve been a fan of Amy Winehouse since her first album,”Frank”, which is excellent!. I think the girl is what a proper artist should be. She’s not trying to be anything, she doesn’t look typical, she doesn’t act typical and her music is not typical. Love her or hate her, the last thing you’re gonna do when you hear her music is roll your eyes and think ‘just another wannabe’. I’m glad she’s making moves in the US, there is a lot of variety and talent here in the UK it’s about time people get to know! The BRITS are coming! Go Amy!!!

Tortured Artist???
I love Amy’s music (I copped that CD first day out, on good faith) I was dissapointed at the too few tracklist, but was “okay” with the poetic content. Amy is a true artist and could probably be developed into so much more with the right people behind her. I dig her writing (filthy lyrics and all), and her voice is her own. I give her a B+ and predict that next time around she’ll come with her A game… if all that damn drinking don’t kill her first.
Her name couldn’t be more appropriate. (LOL)
I Love the retro jazzy & contemporary poetic twist. My Fave’s are “You know i’m no good”, “Back to black”, and “Wake up Alone”.

AND NO ONE SAID SHE WAS BETTER THAN LAURYN. they said this is the album that lauryn shoud’ve made (by that he meant taking a 60s approach). personally i agree and if you don’t then whatever that’s your opinion. lauryn has a beautiful voice that would’ve sounded great with this 60s vibe thing.
and another thing, LET PEOPLE HAVE THEIR OPINIONS. not everyone is in love with this girl, not everyone is in love with lauryn, not everyone is in love with estelle or that king girl. in all honesty, i got tired of lauryn’s music but i’m not gonna bash her like you guys are bashing amy.

Anyway I like her , I know plenty of people who think Lauryn Hill is overrated sooo calm down if you think LH is better than her okay go ahead you do no need to get mad at others for liking someone better. I think what he meant when he said this is the Album LH wanted to make meaning the period like 50s and 60s type of sound not necessarily that it is better..

it is about color@#99 when you know damn well the Grammy committee is partial to white women and light skinned sistas. Remember when India Arie got upstaged at the 2002 Grammies. This Winehouse chick will probably get the best new artist award next year..a year after Corinne Bailey Rae lost the award..although Bailey Rae deserved it..her album was on fire…but it’s all about COLOR in this world. Just cuz Corrine wears a little fro’ and this chick got straight hair..that’s what it’s all about. Call me racist if you want to…then damn it..i am

And also I will never buy a Justin Timberlake album for that reason…stealing and making profits off black folks music. I like Robin Thicke..well damn…at least he KEEPS IT REAL by marrying a sista so I got way more respect for Robin. But Justin on the other hand: he steals our music, OUR PRODUCERS (haven’t you noticed that Timbaland totally dropped Ginuwine to work with Justin–total sell out). I’m sick of these white boys and white girls trying to take what’s ours. They’ve beeen doing it during the entire last century. Blues and Bluegrass music is traced to the music from West Africa. If black folks can keep something and have pride in something in this racist country…let it be our music!!
I’m not saying this Winehouse chick is bad (you read my earlier comment..i like the “rehab” song). But I think it’s a damn shame when girls like Joss Stone, Christina, and maybe even Amy Winehouse are dropping their draws and opening their legs to get tracks. But that’s typical “white girl” for you!!!!

Also, Justin Timberlake loves to sing BLACK music..but have you ever seen Justin dating a sista–Noooooooooooooooooooooooooo! Justin screws the whitest, most flat assed things out there(i.e. Cameron Diaz..etc). So I guess Joss Stone can get some props for at least dating a black man..since she is fucking for the songs. Joss keeps it more real than Justin

to respond to the majority of the comments, I just want to set the record straight by saying I’m not the one that compared them.
several e-mails I’d gotten about her said they felt like she was “the white lauryn hill” and then questlove made that comment (it’s posted on her ad in vibe magazine).
I think amy is a very talented young lady, but there is NOTHING original about her music. it’s already been do before, long ago, she is just bringing it to the forefront of popular music right now. all it is is soul music. and she’s put her own spin on it, by pairing it with her lyrics and dope melodies, harmonies and vocal arrangements.
and yes, she does have an alocohol/heroine addiction, as well as eating disorder. it’s a shame too, because she’s very talented.

Its nice to you as Americans are embracing our British music, BUT i am a very honest berson, and as a Brit, Amy’s album is good BUT its nothing to shout to the roof tops about let alone hype it up as much as Brian has done. ALTHOUGH, her debut album (Frank) was the SHIT now that was dope from stronger than me to ‘you sent me flying’ was wicked.
Also, Amy is incomparable to Lauryn Hill they are v.different artists so i dont that comparison was a credible one

what is typical “white girl”?? you basically write about how blacks are discriminated against yet you generalize white girls. the funny thing is for every white girl using sex to get ahead, there is a black girl, asian girl, etc. doing the same thing
and what is “keeping it real”? just because someone married a black person doesn’t make them real.
plus for all the people complaining about how Amy is taking away the shine from people like Anthony Hamilton, etc, keep in mind that it has nothing to do with race. Beyonce, Ciara , and Ashanto are also taking shine away from these people and they’re black as well. Yes, Bey can sing but what artistic vision does she have? Yet you guys are so quick to focus only on the whites who “take our music”. now who discriminates?
many of you have some serious race issues that you need to sort out. stop being so ignorant

White people, don’t have soul, they copy it!!!
Amy Winehouse is a great artist. Let’s just leave it at that.
Lauryn can sing, flow, and act and she did all of this before the age of 25. Don’t compare the 2.
Corrine Bailey Rae is a wonderful artist, but that’s not soul music.
Robin Thicke is great as well. But he ain’t nothing new.
@133 why did your comment make me feel like Little Richard? You mofos stole our music, then gonna invade us with The Beatles & the Rolling Stones and so on and so on. Then think it is so great because ya’ll did it.

She’s alright but I think you are giving her waaaay too much credit.
(Could you just have a thing for blue eyes?)Her songs are mediocre at best. Yes, she has an old school (umm Motown-ish) flavor. But that alone doesn’t make her Aretha or Gladys (or even Lauryn for that matter). Lyrically, nice… and a little more mature than most of what’s out… but that’s more a product of being exposed to the UK cultural scene than anything else. I mean, y’all sleep on sistahs like Amel & Angie who do it all the time. Her vocals=bland(no range). I mean it’s likeable, but she AIN’T on Robin Thicke’s level yet. Be for real.

Judging from how defensive you sound you must be white but Bmore has issuses don’t take it personal. But in response to everything else you said. Lauyrn made the album she wanted to make and should have made. Like I said before Amy’s album is a throw back album done very well but Christina did the same thing just poorer.Lauryn could have done that easy but I doubt Amy could have done what Lauryn did production wise and definately not lyrically.
And Beyonce’s artistc vision is what she has presented through her music and videos just as Amy or Ciara have presented their’s through their music and videos. I don’t even know what you even meant by that but there you go it’s pretty simple. People need to stop equating artistry with genres there are people in every genres making good and bad music.
And lastly to the couple of people who said Lauryn is overrated. I have a question for you. Who do you think isn’t? Just wondering.

Damn, y’all have some MAJOR race issues…Would you have such a problem with the Lauryn Hill comparison if Amy was Black?
Some people are so caught up with the fact that she’s not Black that you can’t even listen to the music itself. It just KILLS you to give a non-Black person props.
And stop it with that whole “white people are stealing our music bullshit.” MUSIC HAS NO COLOR. Ray Charles did country music, remember? Let’s not limit ourselves because of the color of our skin.
AND I BET IF AMY WAS BLACK SINGING THE EXACT SAME MUSIC Y’ALL WOULD BE PRAISING HER UP AND DOWN. SMH.

Because she is a rich jewish girl who can sing “black” she will always receive more praise than the million black people who can sing 10 times better and actually are real this chick is a mess and an attention seeking druggie who wears the same clothes for seven days straight . we always gotta bring our own down( Beyonce) and big up people like this poor little rich jewish girl.what the fvvvck she doesn’t reach my heart when she sings at all!!! you are all buggin’.

After all we`re only niggas and we`re gonna purchase his music regardless. Take a look at Paris Hilton, loads of people call her racist, even to her face. Does she give a shit? Nope. Why? Amy is Jewish, and does it matter if she isn’t black?
And i don’t get all the fuzz about the resemblences.
When she came out with Frank, it was Erykah Badu. Now it is Lauryn Hill.
Big whoop?
She is a true artist, writing and composing her own music.
I was afraid of this, that her commercial breaktrough and succes could destroy her reputation and what she truly stands for.
And i’m a bit surprised that you US folks like Corinne Bailey Rae so much, she and her music are boring as hell.
And the wikipedia story about Amy doing the new James Bond tune was not true, she said it herself in an interview, it was blown out of proportion.

@ ME
that’s funny. surprise surprise i’m actually black
i’m not saying that MOLH was not a good album. I didn’t care for it much but I still respect it. That was the album, that as you said, Hill wanted to make and made. However, concept-wise this should’ve been her follow up to MOLH
and the other point i was trying to make was against people who said that Winehouse was taking shine away from better black artists when there are also black artists in the mainstream that are taking away shine from these artists.that’s not Amy’s fault.
and by artistic vision, i mean when people actually have something artistic to bring to the table. though Amy’s music isn’t new, it’s different in the mainstream right now and you can see her artistic vision. someone called it retro R&B, perfect term for it. Bey is from a different genre but what artistic vision does she have? she can sing her ass off and comes out with danceable music, but does she say anything of importance? is she someone that you would listen to and say “damn how the hell did she come up with this (lyrics, concept, etc.)?” missy elliott is a perfect example of being artistic

Yes, white people can be soulful. To say that only black people have soul has to be the “ignorant quote” of the day. And so what, blue-eyed-soul is making a come back? I know that a lot of you closet racists would rather hear bullshit about bullshit artists like Beyonce and Rhianna, rather than real R&B that just so happens to come from a white person. (And until Beyonce can do something on the level of Amy’s Fuck Me Pumps, instead of Freakum Dress she’ll remain a bullshit artist)
I can understand the LH/AW comparision. I listened to several of her tracks and noticed how similar they can be vocally. There were a few time where I listened and thought about LHill. But seriously, they’re completely different. As much as I loved the MisEd. of LHill, it’s overrated, in fact she’s overrated. She does one album and everyone acts as if it’s the gospel truth that can never be surpassed. LHill’s solo work isn’t legendary, if anything it’s a flash in the pan.

nicholeoleoleo said:”Yes, white people can be soulful. To say that only black people have soul has to be the “ignorant quote” of the day. And so what, blue-eyed-soul is making a come back?”
Blue-eyed never went anywhere….
White people get soul from listening to Black music, it’s not naturally a part of their culture. So my comment does not come from a place of ignorance. I never said it was impossible to mimic.
And since when did Beyonce become a bullshit artist? Her music is plain and simple…its POP. That’s the music that keeps the industry afloat.
On the real, everybody can’t be all deep and shit, strumming a guitar, its more to life and music than just that. Sometimes you just want to have fun and keep it simple. You know hit the up the club and dance!!! And chicks be freaking out when Bee comes on, and they play Irreplaceable in the club and its like a sea of hands. So I only take the Beyonce diss but so far, give the woman come credit.
And Lauryn Hill a flash in the pan…Ummm Nuh!!! That’s not what that term means. If she was she wouldn’t be the comparison.
Did people forget Lauryn is a MC as well? Amy don’t rock the mic and what movie was she in?
Rockwell is a flash in the pan. Artists you wouldn’t know off the top of your head. Like who’s going to remember Amy Winehouse in 5 years. Tell Questlove to holla at Res or Mystic or Leela James for the matter, before bigging up this chick.

Are we still going crazy over white people just because the sound soulful? It’s 2007 - this sh*t still blows my mind. Okay the girl has soul….and…?
I don’t find anything creative or compelling about her music, it’s very predictable and self indulgent. Entertaining - YES, Earth shattering - NO. Too much hype if you ask me. Black or white…this is nothing new or innovative and yes, like everything else, it’s all been done before.
And for the Lauren Hill comparison. Lauren is not my gold standard when it comes to vocalists, but her debut album and the Fugees prior work was much more creative and inspiring and when it come to vocalist no one tops my girl Jill. You can tune a piano to her voice, she’s one of the only singers that acting sing notes pitch perfect.

^^^I hate when people put other artists down to praise other artists. Rhianna and beyonce are pop artists and in no shape or form should be compared to Amy who is not in the same genre of music. There is no such thing as “Black music” or “white music”. Me being a music fanatic and critic, it seems like everyone has to put music in a box. Music is music, music is art, music is an art form and even though labeled, should not be limited to a certain race or gender, color of people…..ect.

You US folks have a lot of crap artists out there that ruin the market an oppertunities for other good artists. Also for you US folks, since you woul never have Amy Winehouse album’s release over here if there weren’t any significant changes compared to 3, 4 years ago.
Amy first album Frank wasn’t released in the US because there was not one promomtioncompany that saw a market to promote a hip hop crossover jazz album made by a white girl.
And for the music taste comment, i’ll bet i have a better music taste than yours, all Europeans have :P.
And for everyone who thinks Amy has a drinking or drugproblem: She stopped smoking weed 2 years ago. She’s not on drugs, the coke/crack pictures were fake, this was confirmed by Amy’s A&R who publiced the original picture that was sent to the agencies.
And for the drinking: i think you need to listen to Rehab a few more times. She doesn’t have a problem with drinking, she is depressed because she split with her back then boyfriend (she also split up with her last boyfriend a few weeks ago) and as a result of that she has been drinking a lot. She could stop anytime with drinking, she just doesn’t want to.

Who cares about colour??? Who cares about Joss Stone??
The fact is Amy Winehouse is one of the best, most talented, most gifted artists out there right now. ‘Back To Black’ is THE best album @ the moment.
So all of u going on and on about ‘Oh, she’s white, she’s being hyped up’… put your prejudice aside for 35-40 mins and listen to an absolutely fantastic album.

Been listening to her since her first album but this album ranks her in my top 5. For all those making comparisons or pointing out similarities in her and Ms Hill you’ll enjoy hearing her live version of He Can Only Love Her. She does alittle Doo Wop (That Thing) snippet at the end. I never even thought about Lauryn listening to Amy but the more I heard the comparisons the more I noticed alittle similarities.

I don’t like how critics say she like Lauyren Hill. That’s not true. They should focus on her success more instead of commenting on ‘personal’ problems. I’m not that much of a fan of Bey.And I think she’s a wonderful person. But I believe Amy is more soulful than 75 percent of black artists out there today in the industry. Her music is about something. That’s why I listen to music like her’s today and old school-where the voices really matter.I’d like to go without seeing women on stage or on videos with dresses or skirts that practicaly show crouches.Or no videos that talk about having sex or seeing booties in my face.Music with a message dosen’t get ahead in America.

“but she’s not touching Lauryn lyrics or production wise, not in a million years!! Nowhere near Lauryn’s level. I have YET to find a chick as bad as LAuryn when it comes to lyrical content. Undethroned since ‘98. ”
Sorry Lauren was sued by everybody that worked on her CD and she gave up writing credit to the people who sued her. Why do you think she has not come up with a follow up

I find it absolutely hilarious that you can sit on your ass and say US acts aren’t dominating the European charts at the moment. The biggests acts for 2006-07 that’s touring right now are in fact our acts. Madonna, Justin, Beyonce, Christina and Pink are slaying you guys. I’ll even include Nelly Furtado (even tho she’s Canadian) cause she’s our neighbor and US producers are responsible for her success right now. just cause you had a little resurgance on the rock side of things you wanna act a fool.
I can appreciate Amy for what she delivers but you must realize that the UK and European music scene is in more dire straits than the US right now. I have been a member of UKMIX.ORG for over three years and all they talk about are our acts. I wonder why that is??????????????
You say Amy isn’t on drugs? yeah, and neither was Anna Nicole Smith. I rest my case.

WOW! I haven’t commented on this site in sooooo long but I had to comment to give props to Amy Winehouse…. I am defintiely with you on the blue eyed soul thing…her voice is great! Rough and pretty, her music speaks to my old soul. I really love this album and has not been able to take it out of the CD player since I got it… She is very original,,, I compare her to no one, she’s got her own thing right now!

the “me n mr. jones” track is intended for nas (as in nasir jones). there r a number of hints, including the reference to slick rick, who is commonly compared to nas. also, she describes her so-called love as a “black jew.” finally, toward the end, she says, “mr. destiny 9 n 14,” which is nas’s b-day. I think the song says more of her love (and heartbreak) for hip-hop than of any single person, or artist, though she makes clear that she’s come to expect more from nas.

Comparing Amy with Anna is ridiculous. Not even to start with your biggest Madonnatour crap argument. Justin?? I might stand up for that to scratch my ass you were thinking i was sitting on (unbelievable isn’t it?) hand luagh out hard, he is a joke.
Your arguments are weak and lame.
The only good band/artist from the US that had a breaktrough in the past couple of years is The Gossip.

I have been pumpin her damn cd. I must say i’ve become an instant fan. I cant remember the last time, I llked someone so quickly. And its not cuz of the “hype” its just cuz in my opinion, her music is the shit. Very soulful. But i saw a clip of her being drunk on stage, though it was funny as shit, she needs to get some help. Why is it, that so many TALENTED/RARE artist usually have some kind of drug/alchol issue?

Her voice is very different. Really grows on you. However a lot of her music is remakes of old stuff like Tears dry on their own is clearly Marvin Gay Ain’t no mountain… (listen closely to the music). Still she is unique and a great vocalist. Sad that they say she’s an alcoholic though. Hope she overcomes this.

Do black people have any pride for their culture nowadays. If music knows no color, then why didn’t White America want to hear the true pioneers of Rock n Roll: Fats Domino, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and Bo Diddley. When these blacks were doing it White America never considered it, but when Elvis used (stole) it then thats when they started to listen. The only white musician that I respect because he actually contributed something to Rock was Buddy Holly. Same scenerio here, you can NEVER compare this girl to Lauren Hill, Robin Thicke to Stevie Wonder. Dont label me a “Hater” or racist just because I would like to preserve my race/culture, because whites have been and are still swiping everything from blacks. To me both of them are overrated and there are many Blacks “the true faces of RnB/Soul” that are not given credit or recognized. Most of you Negreos are brainwashed into this Western/European way of life and don’t want to be identified with the black masses.
P.S. The ONLY white musicians out right now that has some type of substance is Gavin DeGraw/Jason Mraz. If anyone has soul its them.

I love amy and i’m just so addicted to her since the first time I heard her voice. I don’t think she should be compared to anyone. She has a unique voice and I love the topics she picks in her songs. Her music is so light and at the same time so painful. Lauryn Hill is great too but Amy winehouse is hypnotizing. Joss stone is cool but I think she makes music to sell while Amy is so spontaneous about her music, it’s candid, she just pours her talent in her songs. At least she’s not getting greedy yet…

i admire amy winehouse for her honesty and great songs but i why she hasn’t been arrested yet 4 taking drugs ..i don’t know …i hate that they treat celebrities differently as if they can get away with crime. she is constantly on magazine covers for not her talent for good music but for taking drugs which is stupid .although i think drugs help her musicwise lol
