ARTIST TO WATCH: EMILY KING

Emily King is a 21 year old singer from New York City and is destined to be one of J Records’ newest stars. King may be young, but her music is a throwback to another era.

The music on her J Records debut, East Side Story, reveals roots that are deep and ambitions that are grand. “I think music is such a revolutionary thing, and that’s what it should be,” she says. In conversation, King’s words are packed with references to the wide range of great artists that inspired her – the Beatles and Nas, Sarah Vaughan and Radiohead, Michael Jackson and Neil Young. “Every record that I’ve ever heard has been an influence on me,” she says.

As the daughter of two singers – one Italian, one African-American – who performed internationally as a jazz duo, King was exposed to music, its challenges and its rewards, from an early age. She always knew she would follow in her parents’ footsteps. “I had a hard time in school,” she says, “because I already knew what I wanted to do, so I was like, let me just get started.”

So check out some of her music, and watch her EPK after the cut. I’m feeling her and she is definitely an artist to watch.

it wont let me listen :(

  2. TRISHA

SHE KINDA LOOKS LIKE A MIX OF MICHAEL JACKSON AND ALICIA KEYS. MUSIC IS O.K. THOUGH.

  3. Tanisha

Sounds like she could be on to something. Can’t wait to hear more from her. I remember when Alicia Keys & Keiysha Cole 1st came out, everyone slept on them. Let’s just say that’s what I hope is happening here.

  4. Radha

looooooove it…..refreshing. Something needed, missing from the scene today. It ain’t pop. It almost seems impossible to be pop and have such diverse influences but I am soooo looking forward to her music. I sure hope more of the comments to come reflect an interest in her sound…not her look as previous folk have referred to. It’s kinda sad that that’s how we vibe with artists today. On the visuals. My homegirl said a Ray Charles or Stevie would never hit today ’cause pop audiences need to lust after an artist to buy into them. But every once in a while folk break through, penetrate the charts or the Pop scene and touch folk. I can tell she’ll do the same.

  5. asia

sounds like Joss Stone a lil…i like

  6. yes

she doesn’t sound too bad, check out lily allen too

  7. Radha

oh. and the voice is bananas…range like a mofo…and if she got Marsha singing her praises (who i think has one of the most slept-on-amazing-canary- in-her-ribcage voices ever!!) you know its real.

  8. melisus

Like I said before she sounds boooooring as hell sorry but it’s my opinion.I like how my other comment wasn’t posted.Do your thing CL trying to delete our opinions.

  9. new yorker

don’t like the music much but i like the raspiness in her voice

i’ll support her anyway b/c i’m sick of the nonsense on the radio. i even had to boycott the radio just to escape the “imma flirt” and “throw some d’s” songs so i hope she makes it

  10. Ree

For some reason she reminds me.. too much of a mixture of oldschool alicia keys with joss stone.. alil nikka costa.. not too original to me.

  11. elle

ahhh How can you not love Classics like ‘throw some d’sss on that…’ or “imma flirt’…? just kiddin u know ;0

i like her raspy voice but her song reminds me of an old classic…’if there’s a cure for this’…a real old classic.

but hey like 9 said…I’ll give her a shot just to hear something worth listening to

  12. Salty

#9 I feel ya. I hate listening to the radio, they play diddy&keyshia “last night” every freakin 5 minutes along with throw some d’s.

I like emily king, but I agree with #8 who says she’s boring, her sound is very boring so far from what I have heard. So what she’s not “pop”, her music is not exciting enough to grab my attention and make me listen. But I won’t sleep on her either.

  13. kawaii

@YES “check out lily allen too”

What are u smoking! lilly allen cant sing, all she does is over consume alcohol and sing out of tune. puhlease.

some people have no taste in music lol

  14. kawaii

emily doesnt sound bad, she can sing. but im not overjoyed.
im trying to like her, she is original and different which is good and the music industry certainly needs that now.

but she doesnt blow me away

  15. Mike Anonymous

Me love Emily King looong time! =]

  16. I heard about her a month ago, her lyrics are fire. That’s what I love about J Records, Clive signs very good artists.

  17. ms_mac

Clive Dvis sure knows how to stick to a formula, don’t he?

  18. Knowledge

Why is it everytime I look at her I’m reminded of Teen Marie?

  19. jscene

Damn she look older than 21! Is this another chick lying about her age? Gheesh.

  20. TeTe

ok i finally can hear it.im feelin this.i love music like this.i can definately see me listening to this everyday

  21. AWJ12687

    Hold Me’s hot!

  22. Why Try?

    LOVIN’ IT!!!

  23. Jazzy J

Is this the girl that was in Snoops Video saying “Drip it like water u want it i got it”? Or am i wrong

  24. She is one fine specimen!!!

  25. Ronetta

Why are all the female artists to watch the same old mostly white or white looking chicks? Her music isn’t unique and plenty of artists are already out there doing the opposite of the Beyonce, Ciara, Cassie garbage.Leela James and India.Arie been trying to hold it down for a minute now.Plus everything India drops be hot.If she jst looked like Alicia Keys Black folks would love, accept and promote her more.

  26. Jazzy J

I love this type of music, Kind of mellow. And we definately need some DECENT REAL music right about now. She has a pretty voice, i could hear her and Robin THicke doing something together.

  27. XENU ™

I like her voice, she is like a female John Legend. I do hate how that synopsis just had to include the fact that she is mixed. Doesn’t matter.

  28. TeTe

#26 i agree with you somewhat…but even though people dont support INDIA like they should, that doesnt mean they shouldnt support this chick if they think she can sing.its the same with beyonce, ciara, and whoever else

  29. Kenya

I liked the songs that I heard here and I listened to some of her songs on her myspace and liked them too espcially “Hold Me” and “You and I”. I think that Emily offers something different to the table. So much of the music is the same and I like some of the R&B/rap songs, but then every now and then I also like to hear something different too. I hope to hear more from Emily King.

  30. music is life

she sounds alot like alicia keys and yeah i can appreciate it because it is something different and i do love new music because whats out right now has been done for the past 5 yrs it’s all recycled. I do agree with xenu the race thing they could have left out but you gotta remember labels usually do stuff like that to generate a certain crowd and that would be in her case us black folks. but all is love and at the end of the day it’s something new and fresh. oh yeah and india arie is very talented but she’s too depressing sometimes and that’s whats stopping her from being bigger than she could be she really needs to switch it up a bit. ps. look out for a chick name AMY WINEHOUSE she is hot fire, vocals are dopeeeeeeeeeeee be on the look out.

  31. Aziajs

Definitely reminiscent of Alicia Keys (even her ethnicity) when she first came out. I can hear the Joss Stone too.

  32. devilicious

She sounds good but i dont listen to music from that genre.

  33. Murmur

I really Love Hold Me! it’s fire and i think she’s really takin us somewhere with this.
Yea, She has a sound like some i’ve heard before but that doen’t mean it’s not GOOD!
I hope she makes it and that we hear more from here because like others have said i’m tired of music right now

  34. I like it Don’t know if i’d buy it though.

  35. i am LOVINGGG this. ill be gettin her album.

  36. MJ (RNB)

I like her voice, but let’s hear more from her…

  37. @ 20, maybe she lies about her age but maybe she doesn’t. Some people look older than they are, others look younger than they really are.

  38. MS. GOTTABODY

Yeah she does sound like Joss Stone. She has a richness to her voice & a nice tone. I hope she does well!

  39. fungirl79

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE HER! SAW HER A WHILE BACK (like in NOV) IN DC. SHE OPENED FOR COMMON. SOO GOOD. WE ENDED UP HANGING OUT AND I’VE SEEN HER PERFORM A FEW MORE TIMES. THIS GIRL IS SOOO DOPE AND EVERY AUDIENCE SHE’S PERFORMED FOR LOVES HER. IN ADDITION SHE IS THE SWEETEST AND MOST SINCERE PERSON. LOOK OUT FOR HER YA’LL, SHE’S THE TRUTH………..

  40. I’m loving her songs.
She reminds me of an American Corrine Bailey Rae.

  41. monie luv

She’s going to definitely be compared to Alicia Keys, a lot.

But, if Clive Davis promotes her as heavily as he did Alicia, Emily will be a huge star.

  42. ijeoma aka jai

me likes this a lot. i’m surprised no one has said this yet but she sounds SO MUCH like Kiley Dean (you don’t know her? google it. the girl can blow.).

    75% Kiley Dean + 20% Alicia Keys + 5% Joss Stone = Emily King

i really like these new female R&B artists with old school voices. Not only Emily King, but several of them are either coming back or new to the game.

ex) Amy Winehouse, Chrisette Michele, Kiley Dean, Jennifer Hudson, Joss Stone, Jill Scott, Corinne Bailey Rae….etc.

I’M LOVING THIS. bringing real music back. :D

  43. Yasmine

I am loving her sound. I just checked out her myspace. Thank god the pretty face and the ok voice era is over!! ::sighs::

    ::waves good bye to cassie::

    =]

  44. Anika

She’s decent. Ive heard ALOT worse and of course alot better. She’s aight.

She puts in mind of Kiley Dean.

  45. Duh

Emily is great! I wish the best for her, but what type of radio format is going to play these songs? It’s going to be a risk and a lot of money. But check out her myspace page and listen to those other songs. “You and I” is great. Also, go to http://www.singersroom.com and you can here “Walk in My Shoes” which features an exclusive feature from Biggie. Personally, I think the feature was wasted and the cursing takes away from the song.

  46. Arrey

Im really feeling her music. Very mellow and smooth. I hope she goes far in the biz.

  47. l's did it

radiohead + neil young + the beatles as influences… this is an artist after my own heart.

  48. Wow I like her sound and music. Rather Neo-soul. Really nice. Looking out for her!!

She kinda reminds me of Natasha Beddingfield in her sound on some tracks…

  49. I THINK IM GOING TO LIKE HER!!! DANG NATIVE AMERICAN, AFRICAN AMERICAN, ITALIAN AND POLISH…WHOA….SOMETHING FOR THE PPLE…..SOCIETY AS A WHOLE

  50. Gina_b

Tight. To me she looks like Jennifer Beals, you know that flashdance chick?

  51. Bleu

Definately feeling this chick!! It’s tome to bring real music back and she and the other real artists need to spark that revolution and take us back to when music was just that and from the soul.

  52. Dave

I like her alot. She’s like Alicia Keys with a guitar and a MUCH better voice. I would buy her album. Watch the youtube clip yall dont just judge off the two songs.

  53. Dave

    THIS IS REAL MUSIC!!

  54. LOVE

I just love artist like her, with meaningful lyrics. The music really speaks to my soul and I just love that. Amy Winehouse is another one, she kind of remind me of Lauryn Hill with her music, because she comes right out and say what’s from the heart. That’s true talent when everything doesn’t has to rhyme.

  55. LOVE

    Excuse me, HAVE to rhyme.

  56. I’m loving Hold Me. This is some good stuff. I’m enjoying it. Only if I could donwload these songs. Brian, please make a plan if you read this.

  57. JOHNOSAHON

    “HOLD ME” IS AMAZING.

i can’t stop listening to it, i hope that’s her first single.

it’s reminds me of miss. hill

  58. Lovey

she look like the chick in snoop video, “u want em, i got em, dripin like water”, u kno the girl in the beginning that looks like Lynn offa girlfriends

  59. G'

I see why they kept her picture under wraps.
