The music on her J Records debut, East Side Story, reveals roots that are deep and ambitions that are grand. “I think music is such a revolutionary thing, and that’s what it should be,” she says. In conversation, King’s words are packed with references to the wide range of great artists that inspired her – the Beatles and Nas, Sarah Vaughan and Radiohead, Michael Jackson and Neil Young. “Every record that I’ve ever heard has been an influence on me,” she says.
As the daughter of two singers – one Italian, one African-American – who performed internationally as a jazz duo, King was exposed to music, its challenges and its rewards, from an early age. She always knew she would follow in her parents’ footsteps. “I had a hard time in school,” she says, “because I already knew what I wanted to do, so I was like, let me just get started.”

I have seen her perform live, she is amazing. Her single was out a while ago, and got radio play. I don’t know what is taking so long…her sampler is crazy!

I like her voice, she sounds a bit like … Lil’ Mo as well as Alicia Keys a tad bit. The music is slightly bland though, like someone else said, it needs something to grasp my attention. I’m listening to ‘Hold Me Down’ as i type out this comment and i’m feeling it. I’m feeling it alot. This girl could go far, as long as she does the right things.
Artists like Amy winehouse and Corinne Bailey Rae are amazing and they have something different, I’m happy they’re repping it for the UK music scene!
That Hold Me song sounds like Lauryn Hill. I might have to get her CD.

Yo, Emily King is the truth – touring with the likes of John legend, Floetry, Lyfe Jennings and working with the greatest in the game right now (Ne-Yo, Raphael Saadiq, Sean Garrett) she’s on somethin else entirely!
She may not be crunk enough to play in your ride with the boys, but this girl writes all her own music, IN FACT she turned the tracks written with the aforementioned away in favor of her own stuff – because she wants to remain credible and actually cares about her music!!
She was the ONLY chick playing at this years 3rd Annual Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival and wont stop there – the debut track ‘Walk In My Shoes’ has been mixed to include a hook from none other than Lupe Fiasco – video hitting y’all very soon!
Album is released August 28th…GET INTO IT! Emily King is gonna blow….
