BIG PIMPIN’ JIGGA…

Mr. Carter is officially making moves in 2007.

Jay-Z has reached an agreement to sell his Roc-A-Wear clothing line to the Iconix Brand Group for a reported $204 million in cash, the companies announced Tuesday.

As a part of the deal — which could be worth up to $400 million through sales incentives — the Def Jam president and rapper will retain his role in product development and also enter into a new deal to launch the Shawn Carter Collection, an upscale luxury brand set to debut in 2008. SOURCE

So maybe Jigga does have enough money to pay off a certain baby momma, hmmmm. But besides that, he is on his way to becoming one of the top guns in the industry. We’ll see about this Shawn Carter collection though, I don’t even know anyone who still wears Rocawear.

    @honesty i didn’t understand a word you said.what?

  11. Barbara

    “I’m proud of him!”

“Let’s rob this nigga,” Pulls down face mask.

  12. EMMANUEL

HAHA!! YOU TRIPPIN….EEERBODY WEAR ROCAWEAR…OBVIOUSLY YOUR NOT UP-TO-DATE ON WHATS EN VOGUE….lol….but thats COOOL….ESPECIALLY in the Ghetto areas its all about LRG, Rocawear, Enyce, and Girbaud.

  13. Barbara

I don’t know about Girbaud. That shit came and went so fast…The trick to being in style is not worrying about labels and just doing your own damn thing. That label shit is for high school.

  14. La Bella

Not everybody wears Rocawear.People-particular Blacks needs to stop worrying about what your clothes look like or which “celebrity” makes them. You need to get off welfare and out the ghetto!I’m sorry but I’m tired black people in the ghetto who’s clothes and cars look expensive than their place.Ok that was off subject, but congrats to him

  15. BOOGIEGIRL

Yeah I love Rocawear and Jigga. I think his line is too expensive but I still wear it. Baby phat is stealing all the females. lol

Jigga is stupid! That 400 million will last a very long time but not forever. He could have kept that line and past it on to the next generations in his family to keep bringing in the money. Blacks don’t know how to keep themselves wealthy and help other Blacks. With all the wealthy rappers I never see or hear of them buying $300-$500,000 3 family properties (home(s)) and moving Black families in nice areas. It was the not so wealthy ones who made you rich. Jigga should have kept his clothing line.

  16. Coko

LOL@11. I wear what looks cute and is in my proce range!! I can only rock Jigga when I find him at Burlington! Anyway, love him…keep doin it, Jay…

I second that, if you look at almost any black finance article, that is always pointed out as a difference between blacks and whites and building wealth.

  18. LOVE

I’m sick of hearing about Joe Camal. NEXT.

  19. Beyonce's Lacefront wig

He actually looks good in this picture. Damn! That’s a first for me.

  20. Beyonce's Lacefront wig

@ #15 I think it was actually a very smart business moe. ROcawear has seen its peak and like all fashion labels, it will inevitably have a donwward trend. He cashed in when it was at a high. Those fools that bought the brand think this is something viable. It is not. He will take his money and invest it in something else. As ugly as he is, he makes some smart moves. For what he is missing in looks, I guess that’s what he got Beyonce for, cause she is not the brightest.

  21. Beyonce's Lacefront wig

    * smart business move. I meant like all urban fashion labels…

  22. Why Try?

Rocawear’s annual sales are about $700 million a YEAR, but no one wears it any more?

  23. TK

At the rate he’s going he won’t be second (financially) to Diddy much longer, if he hasn’t passed him already. This man’s gonna be a billionaire before he’s dead…watch.

  24. Marie

Ok, so the Shawn Carter collection will pretty much be a grown and sexy trend. Now that he sold the ghetto boys as many sweatshirts and baggy Jeans as he could, nhe is bow going to convince them to charge their credit cards higher to the grown and sexy look that JZ has gotten to know and love. Good luck with that! I wont date a man that wears ROcawear. The last time that we were shopping and my man picked up a ROcawear jeans, I almost smacked him. Thank God, it was just a mistake. The next day, I went out and bought him 3 pairs of Jeans.

  25. BOOGIEGIRL

@21 Maybe you’re right but I don’t know. Anyhow, Rocawear still maybe is bringing in good money. Go to any fashion store you will see the Rocawear clothes sold out and ask the females who work as sales associates. They will tell you baby phat and rocawear sells the most. But maybe that’s not everywhere. lol

  26. BOOGIEGIRL

And I won’t be wearing Rocawear anymore since Jigga don’t own it anymore. LOL. I’ll stick with Baby Phat and Apple Bottoms now.

  27. afrobabe

wow i think now that jigga don’t own roca wear it aint goin 2 sell. #3 and # 4 u re sooo true wish he could only give me a mill that wouldnt make a difference 2 his bank account

  28. KENYA

Ugh Jay sold his clothing? What an idiot. He makes over 700 million dollars a year with rocawear. I can only think he did this because he knew he is puting out the Sean Carter clothing line? He better hope they buy Sean Carter clothing and not continue buying rocawear or he will be wishing he never gave it up. He could have at least sent flyers to Afro/Black and Puerto Ricans people telling us not to buy rocawear anymore and start buying Sean Carter so we could help him out. Nah let me stop. He better let everyone know is does own rocawear anymore and keep mentioning his new line Sean Carter.

  29. Ms. G

I’m not a fan of his but he sure knows how to make that money. If only he could give some of his entreprenurial skills to me. *sigh* Oh well…

    And #13- I agree 100%

  30. darkandbeautiful

wow he has come along way not too long now b4 he bcomes a billoniare.

  31. Peaches

He kinda looks like Beyonce. Eyes and smile. I wonder what their baby will look like.

  32. darkandbeautiful

i have to say he does look good in this pic mayb beyonces beauty is begining to rub off on him.

  33. I got a roc-a-wear jacket but Jay-Z needs to stop selling out and start making some good albums again cause Kingdom Come was dumb.

  34. Ezra

I wouldnt be caught in this trash…I mean its sold at TJ Maxx…shudders..some of the girls stuff is really nice..but having the brand over every inch on the clothing is just disgusting…I hate their obnoxious pants and they fit weird. I’m more of an Abercrombie guy :/

  35. LMAO @ #2…I know right!!! That is sooo disheartening lol…

Jay stays doing big things…he has some tight connects, but I’m with Tianna who wears Roc-a-Wear anymore 4real?

  36. Cash move everthing around him. Damn his grind is sick.

  37. yav

you guys.. he still has ownership interest in the company.. in the article it says that he will retain his role in product development and also enter into a new deal to launch the Shawn Carter Collection…so he receives a portion of the profit splits and he gets a signature line, which will most likely mirror or exceed what rocawear has done to date

  38. ThinkAboutIt

Good move for Jay-Z… and a whole lot of are people wearing Roc-a-wear, their sales are expected to be over $750 million THIS YEAR alone.

And although he does not have a college degree – neither does Bill Gates – he is a very smart businessman, because in addition to the $240 million cash up front, he will get an additional $35 million in stock if the brand beats performance thresholds over the next three to five years – and because he
will still be in charge of all of Rocawear’s product development, marketing and licensing, and his senior management team will stay on board [and continue to be paid].

He also will be getting the new company to bankroll his new launch into a joint venture to buy and develop more brands, starting with a luxury line called Shawn Carter Collection with suits, watches and fragrances.

This man’s hustle is serious – he’s a “BUSINESS”… man, and definitely changing the game.

  39. yav

compton_chick23..you’re a fuckin idiot… how the hell can you say he sold out..i think you just say shit just to say it… if anything he’s set an important precedence for young black entreprenuers and kingdom come was a sick album with the exception of “anything” featuring usher…the album showed the growth and maturation of jay-z.. and it was super lyrical..everyone knows females dont listen to rap lyrics they just like a song just for the beat

  40. coolc

why must every black person sell their business? they are just giving it to white people. jay-z, dame and them did all the hard work: started the clothing line, marketing the line, created a fan base for the clothing line, all the blunt work is done. now they just handed all their hard work to the white man.

which is excatly what dame dash didn’t want to happen.

niggas need to learn to keep their businesses! keep in the family, build wealth and give jobs to blacks.

  41. PAT

NOT HATIN!! BUT WHY SO MUCH MONEY…I DONT KNOW ANYONE WHO WEARS ROC A WEAR EITHER

  42. OLA

yall have really let jim jones go 2 ur head, yall acting like rocawear is played out?? yoo u can go 2 any middle or high skool or college and see kids who STILL rock rocawear, yall dont kno that this is a HUGE investment that if done rite could make him millions of dollars since he will have a stake in the iconix’s stock, puffy should do the same cuz we all kno ppl stil rock sean john 2…..step ur brains up 4 real

  43. coolc

“everyone knows females dont listen to rap lyrics they just like a song just for the beat”

not true. and im sick of people thinking because i’m a female i don’t know nor understnad the lyrical contents of a song. i dont just like the song for the beat.

kingdome come was ok, not one of the best albums of 2006. not even close.

    “obnoxious pants, fit weird” WTF???

  45. natural Mystic

    Another black seller-out?
First BET then this one… I guess I’m outta the loop, but what’s the story behind Rocawear? What exactly happened to Damon Dash– wasn’t he part owner?
    #14, very true.

  46. @ Honesty, do me a favor and GTFOH! Just because ATL wears Rocawear doesn’t mean that everyone else does. Now I am from down south too and where I’m from, niccas don’t wear that $hit anymore. Where I’m from they rocking red monkeys now. As a matter of fact, that’s all my ole man wear. Since I have been dating him he has NEVER owned anything RocAWear. So don’t be so ignorant thinking just b/c alot of niccas in ATL wear it that means that everyone else is also.

Anyway, Jay-Z can’t rap but he sure knows how to get that money. *singing Bone Thugs & Harmony “Gotta Make That Money Man, That Money Man….”*

  47. theboyabouttown

Jigga had to sell Rocawear as the brand is losing traction all over the place. He actually should have sold it a few years ago when it was worth more and had some remote relevance. Hopefully, Iconix can breathe some new life into this fleeting label.

  48. oyster

Thanks for educating me on the whole question of “who wear Roc-A-Wear” because frankly I don’t know anyone who wears it and when I see it in this area it is either on Sale in the Juniors section of Macy’s or at places like Marshall’s and TJ Maxx in the Clearance section there.

I love clothes and I definitely have an open mind when it comes to fashion. But I will say this, I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYTHING BABY PHAT or ROCA WEAR makes that I have liked now as an adult or that I would have worn as a teen.

As a matter of fact my husband and I joke that Russell Simmons is the only one who can wear Phat Farm and make it look nice. It is as if he keeps all of the cute stuff for himself.

I think what I hate so much about those particular labels is the clothes look cheap. They try to give it some umph by slashing a whole bunch of gold, big logos, and rhinestones on everything and think that makes it look good and it just looks cheap and trashy. This is why I never understood how Baby Phat and Roca are still in business because I could never figure out who the hell and where the held those clothes were being bought. I assumed it was the South and Midwest since the north tends to be more conservative in their dress and focuses more on trends versus just a label.

By the way, regardless of my feelings about RocaWear, I am very happy for Jigga.

His suit is IN-FRIKIN-Credible. Fellas that is how it is done. That suit is fabulous. Despite his arrogance, I must say Puffy and Jigga know how to rock a suit. Flawless.

  49. Jazzy J

I think its a good move. I really dont understand why people are saying he’s “selling out” See thats whats wrong with some of our people. When a black man tries to do more for himself then just buying car after car or ridiculous amounts of jewlrey he’s called a sell out when in most cases he should be a great example. We got our views all backwards about what “selling out” is. Thats real sad

  50. atlgirl

    Jay-Z,

Let these nigga haters be your motivators. How did he “sell out?” Most will never have anything to sell so they can’t comprehend the economic and marketing concept of creating and marketing to create and market something new. Its a concept folks! Economic Development 101 – Develop the brand, sell it when it is hot, then move on to develop a new brand. You’d think Concrete Loop editors would understand this – but I guess not since they’re black. Oh, and the readers are black! Now I understand the comments.

  51. jscene

Damn, he hurry up and sold after it came out he was using dog fur! Can’t say nothing but congrats on this one though. Good business man just like puff.

  52. msfabolous

@#15, how won’t 400 million last? And T.I. rebuild homes in the neighborhood that he grew up in…jay has his hands in other things, he has plenty to pass down to his family…

i agree 100% @21, in my opinion, every clothing line will eventually see a decline…and ppl may still wear rocawear but not as much as they used to when they first came out.

@#34…wow…i’m not really a big rap fan but i love jay z’s last cd. what i like about his new cd and his music in general is he doesn’t cuss alot, nice beats and lyrically he’s one of the best…can’t believe you don’t like it… i agree @#40, the album is definetly “sick” and has shown his maturity which is clear in his lyrics…

  53. JUDAH

I agree with #34 to a degree. It’s irrelevant because black people only see dollar signs so the “how” is not a factor to them. Jay-Z is a brilliant rapper, an intelligent brother, and based on who he associates himself with, probably a vile negro.

The reason why black “entrpreneurs” sell their businesses is pretty simple. They’re forced to, lol. Especially a certain type of “black businessman”. Contrary to what most black people think, money does and will not buy you love and race is a factor at the bargaining/business table. These white jews will price you out or buy you out if you have an enterprise that they feel will make them as much, if not more money, than it makes the black man/woman that started the business. Plus black businesses are at a marked disadvantage because we cannot count on our own people for patronage. That doesn’t SEEM to have been an issue in Jay-Z’s case but it’s not uncommon to have someone who’s been bought out to look like they’ve sold they’re business for a big windfall. People in business or sports get fired all the time and it’s reported that they “stepped down”, lol.

  54. babyruth181

I don’t really wear rocawear myself, but here in upstate New York, Everybody rockin it from the chilrin to the grownfolk .

  55. @ #50, so you can understand why some are saying he is sold out I am going to break it down for you. They are saying he’s sold out because him and Damon built that company up themselves without any help from anybody else. That company became very profitable and for him to sell it to a white person instead of someone his own color that makes him a sellout. Hell he could have sold it to Dame if he wanted too. All they are saying is he should have kept that $hit in the family. Whites have too much nowadays and not enough blacks have their own. The same thing goes with Robert when he sold BET – sellout. The makers of FUBU (For Us Buy Us) who sold to the whites – sellout. Understand now?

  56. Coko

#35…lmao…ummm u can find Baby Phat in TJ Maxx too…and chicks still rockin it. LOL…don’t matter where it’s sold.

This man is smart…he got his hands in more things than people probably know about.

    LMFAO@400 mil not lasting forever…r u serious? LMFAO…oh, my goodness…he won’t live forever either.

  57. DO YOUR THANG JIGGA. . . I AINT MAD ATCHA

  58. P.A. MOMMY

    that’s good for jay!
but i heard that wasn’t his baby! that’s director benny boom’s baby! and i saw the little boy! he looks more like benny than he does jay!
