Yesterday I got the chance to chat with Kelly Rowland a.k.a Ms. Kelly about her upcoming album and latest happenings in her life. She was very cool and I really enjoyed speaking with her.

Tianna: Hello Kelly!Kelly: Hi Tianna, how are you?
Tianna: I’m fine and you? It’s a pleasure speaking with you today.
Kelly: I’m fine and thank you, it’s a pleasure speaking to you.
Tianna: First, I want to just say that you look gorgeous in your new video ‘Like This’ with Eve. You really did your thing.
Kelly: Thank you.
Tianna: How did it feel getting back on the small screen as a solo artist?
Kelly: It’s crazy, you know I’m excited about this video, the single, the album - everything. And I remember watching this video come together even as I was shooting it. In the editing room, when I saw it - i was just like ‘ wow, it’s just me’…
Tianna: Mhmmm
Kelly: And…oh definitely, I was kind of thrown off a little! (laughs)
Tianna: (laughs)
Kelly: I was thrown off a little because it’s only me in the video.
Tianna: Yeah, and I know prior to shooting this video, you shot ‘Get me Bodied’ with Beyonce and Michelle?
Kelly: Mhmmm
Tianna: So you was JUST with the girls…
Kelly: Yep!
Tianna: and then you moved on and you were just by yourself. Like, do you ever really miss being with Destiny’s Child?
Kelly: of course!
Tianna: Because I know you guys still support one another, even though you’re doing solo projects. But do you ever just like, miss being with Beyonce and Michelle and having that good ole time with the girls all the time?
Kelly: I do, but I have to say - I’m seeing Beyonce tonight…and Michelle next week *laughs*
Tianna: Oh well, BAM there it is (laughs)
Kelly: We see each other all the time but yea…traveling and doing shows together, I miss that too. At the same time you know, we allow each other our personal growth space for goals.
Tianna: That’s good.
Kelly: We all have different goals now, you know we’re almost 30!
Tianna: MMMMM…
Kelly: Giiiiiiiirl…
Tianna: Giiiiiiiirl…
Kelly: 25, 26 and 27!
Tianna: And ya’ll are doing pretty good might I add!
Kelly: laughs - thank you. I mean Bee is the baby, she’s 25. I’m 26, and Michelle is 27. So it’s like everybody is growing and we all have different goals but, we still respect each other, love each other, and above anything support each other.
Tianna: That’s beautiful.
Kelly: So yeah, we still up in each other’s lives (giggles)
Kelly talks about what she’s bringing on the new record
Tianna: So going out of Destiny Fulfilled, two years later bring Ms. Kelly to the forefront, what can we expect to hear differently from you musically? From all the albums you’ve done with Destiny’s Child and compared to your first solo album ‘Simply Deep‘, what can we expect differently on Ms. Kelly?
Kelly: On this record - it is, I know compared to my last solo album - it was more alternative, rock slash r&b…
Tianna: Right…
Kelly: This record is more r&b/pop I have to say, more so Urban. It’s a real urban record and I also wanted just to mellow it out a little bit.
Tianna: Ok, ok…
Kelly: Like my album, compared to Destiny’s Child is alot more mellow. Destiny’s Child had alot of uptempos and I wanted to do uptempos, which I did. But I also like - it’s like alot of mids you know? Some ballads, not much - but, alot of mids on my record, like mid-ups or strictly midtempos that kind of set you at ease.
Tianna: Ok…
Kelly: Lil’ GROWN!
Tianna: Yea grown, because you grownin’ now, shoo!
Kelly: Exactly!
Tianna: Prior to this last year, you were going to release ‘My Story’. Now is this the same album as Ms. Kelly or Ms. Kelly is a whole different…
Kelly: My Story is…another draft. Some of the songs that were on My Story are on Ms. Kelly. There are about six songs that were on My Story that are on this record. But Ms. Kelly is alot more sassy. Compared to My Story, I had so much to say with words and you know - it was midtempos and ballad heavy and I didn’t want that. I’m like ‘Kelly…you 26 years old’!
Tianna: (laughs)
Kelly: I know alot of things have happened but BOO?! You go out and party, you go out with your girls, you have a good time and you should enjoy being by yourself. And that’s when I actually did take time and I spent alot of time by myself.
Tianna: Ok
Kelly: And I actually went to lunch by myself, to the movies by myself, and like I realized how spending time by yourself in general - enjoying your own company is important.
Tianna: Definitely, definitely…
Kelly: So I did that…and I was just like alright, I like me! (laughs)
Tianna: Well we like you too!
Kelly: I did two records that were very ‘being a woman is fly’ And you know, as a woman basically possessing um - I call it ‘comeback’!
Tianna: Oh ok, comeback!
Kelly: I call whatever it is - whether it’s your smile, your walk, the way you look at someone, or you know, the way you kiss someone - whatever it is. I call it the comeback, you make whoever it is comeback for more - you make guys comeback for more.
Tianna: Ok, Imma have to borrow that one.
Kelly: (laughs) Be like ‘honey, don’t get to close to me, I got the comeback, I keep ‘em coming!’
Tianna: (laughs). Well Kelly, we’ve watched you grow as an artist, and watch you mature into you know - grown Kelly. One thing, I’ve noticed about you is how much your style has matured and sophisticated because back in Destiny’s Child and prior to now, you were always the one with the wild hair. Always changing the colors…
Kelly: (laughs)
Tianna: You got the blue, then next day we see red and all this…
Kelly: (laughs)
Tianna: You were kind of rock and roll, but now you’re just fierce with it. You got the big hair and it’s long and beautiful. And lemme tell you - I loved when you had that curly fro!
Kelly: Oh! Thank you!
Tianna: I looooooved when you had that fro.
Kelly: I still rock that from time to time…
Tianna: Girl, Imma just tell you this right now, I took that picture to the hair salon…
Kelly: (laughs)
Tianna: And I had that curly fro! So props to your hair stylist…
Kelly: Oh, I’m glad you enjoyed it, thank you!
Tianna: Now your clothing is just so sexy but, yet it’s very classy. You’re always classy when I see you.
Kelly: Thank you.
Tianna: So Concreteloop declared you hottie of the week last week. Congratulations to you Kelly.
Kelly: Well Thank you. Thank you so much, I appreciate that…being CL’s hottie of the week!
Kelly on being compared to Beyonce
Tianna: Let me ask you this now, do you feel that or do you expect that people will compare your new solo project to those of your ex-bandmates, particularly Beyonce - because Beyonce - I mean her name…and everybody always wants to somebody to Beyonce. Since you’re so close to her, you feel that people will make this some type of competition?
Kelly: Of course they are.
Tianna: What is your response to those people who feel the need to compare you two, even though you two are completely different people - like, I can clearly see that. But what is your response to people who feel the need to compare you to Beyonce, always?
Kelly: It seems like, you know it’s only natural for you to compare me with Beyonce (laughs)
Tianna: That’s true
Kelly: And I give her props because she is the hottest chick in the game but, at the same time - you forget, we were the hottest chicks in the game together.
Tianna: oh…Bam!
Kelly: So uh, yea we [Kelly & Michelle]didcome from Destiny’s Child (laughs)
Tianna: All of ya’ll are hot, that’s right
Kelly: huh?
Tianna: That’s right, all three of you are hot together.
Kelly: Exactly! But you know…I mean Jay said that’s his BOO and she’s dope!
Tianna: (laughs)
Kelly: And she is very talented. She is the bomb, she is my sister and I give credit where credit is due you know? But it’s going to be only natural for people to do that. I don’t worry about it.
Tianna: Ok, that’s good.
Kelly: I just work hard, and I set myself up as Kelly Rowland.
Tianna: So Kelly Rowland the actress. When you going to get back on the big screen miss thing? Or the small screen - on T.V because I know you were on ‘Girlfriends’ and you did your thing on there. But I know, you’re doing the album right now, in the future do you want to get back into movies and television?
Kelly: Of course, I would love to. I think that I’ll definitely do that when it’s my time to do that because I have been offered different roles, but it hasn’t been the right timing yet. I’ll be glad when it is the right time because I really enjoy it I have to say.
Tianna: I have to ask you, what does your work out regime consist of? Because you’ve always had this small frame and I saw you on TRL yesterday. You had this little short skirt…
Kelly: (laughs)
Tianna: And your legs were just shining and glistening and I was like ‘UGH!’. I mean I’m small too but, can i get some legs like that? So do you work out on a daily basis?
Kelly: Yea, oh you know what…you get my award for the best interviewer today!
Tianna: Oh I do?! I’m just being me girl!
Kelly: But I’ve been working so hard on my legs! And in my family, cellulite is hereditary.
Tianna: Uh Ah…
Kelly: So I’m on a misson to make sure I don’t have it!
Tianna: You don’t have any.
Kelly: Oh yes, I do.
Tianna: Your stomach is just like completely flat, it’s beautiful…you have a beautiful stomach.
Kelly: Oh thank you, that’s because I’m eating right now. I’ve also learned how to eat as well. And sometimes, I’ll really indulge - I’ll eat alot of ice cream - especially when I go home to Houston, TX. There’s different spots there where - you just can’t help! Whether it’s fried chicken, ice cream…
Tianna: mmmm chicken…
Kelly: Oh…I can eat.
Tianna: Girl…
Kelly: (laughs) And I love food but, I also exercise and I also know there’s a time and place to eat crazy and I also need to give my body what it needs.
Tianna: Yea, and especially since in your business, where everybody is looking at you, every magazine wants to pint out everything.
Kelly: But, I ain’t worried about them baby, if I wanna gain 5 or 10 pounds, then I can. I ain’t gonna let nobody judge me.
Tianna: Ok?! I know Kelly would look hot if she was a size 16, 18, whatever…
Kelly: (laughs) Baby as long as I rock it right!
Tianna: We’re going to play a little game right now.
Kelly: Uh oh…
Tianna: No it’s a easy game, It’s good!
Kelly: ok, ok, ok…
Tianna: I’m going to say a name, phrase, or word and you just say the first thing that comes to your mind ok?
Kelly: Ok
Tianna: Cool…Texas.
Kelly: home
Tianna: Eve
Kelly: …oh! I can’t say the word (laughs). Eve like the rapper?
Tianna: Yes
Kelly: Oh she’s the bomb, I love her. She is stylish…I love her.
Tianna: She is fly. ‘I Love New York’

Tianna: yea the tv show
Kelly: She is HILARIOUS!
Tianna: Yea she is! Patti Labelle
Kelly: I want to be like her when I grow up
Tianna: Awww…Beyonce.
Kelly: Impeccable
Tianna: Michelle
Kelly: Icon, I give her icon.
Tianna: Nelly
Kelly: Nelly? hmmm…my bro, my brother. I love him.
Tianna: What about Freddy Kruger?
Kelly: Freddy Kruger…scared the hell out of me!
(Both laugh)
Tianna: Marriage
Kelly: Marriage - hopefully soon. Marriage comes when it’s ready.
Tianna: Cooking
Kelly: I LOVE cooking! I study the food network all the time.
Tianna: Oh you do? I should take noted from you because I don’t!
Kelly: (laughs) Just watch a couple of times and I promise you, you’ll get a little of inspiration to go into the kitchen. At least walk in there, and look at what you have in the refridgerator.
Tianna: I really should.
Kelly: You may wanna try something!
Tianna: Myspace
Kelly: Myspace- I try to answer everybody’s email! Omg, I try to answer messages!
Tianna: So you actually get on your myspace? because I know a couple of artists have people set it up for them?
Kelly: No, actually go on.
Tianna: That’s good to know, I might send you a message one day.
Kelly: Please!
Tianna: Do you go online at all and read blogs?
Kelly: I try not to read as many blogs because you never know what some people are going to say.
Tianna: True!
Kelly: And I have hella thick skin, but if they talk about my family…it’s over!

Kelly: It’s finally here though, June 26th. We should do another interview after the album comes out.
Tianna: I would love to, and was I really your best interview today Kelly because this is my first interview ever.
Kelly: I have to say it is, and I really appreciate that.
Tianna: Awww, I appreciate that.
Kelly: You felt very natural, I like you (laughs)
Tianna: Maybe it’s because I had a long day, i won’t even waste your time with that…
Kelly: But you couldn’t even tell though, you can’t tell. So I appreciate that.
Tianna: Yes, well thank you for atking the time to speak with me and thanx to your team for hooking this up.

Kelly Rowland, I enjoyed the interview I’ve been rooting for her for years, and I’ve been one of those who compared her to Beyonce because that’s what some parts of the videos reminded me of. But it wasn’t a diss, and she’s a talented vocalist. I can’t wait for the album to come out.

This was a nice interview… T did a lot of talking and should allow more space for Kelly to speak and answer the questions more directly.. ask and wait for a response… I like the one answer question..
T should have asked about who is her stylist on her upcoming tour and throughout the entire project because most bloggers seem to hate Tina K. HOD (which I like and they fit well). I would have liked to hear answers on questions like did Bey help her with any of the project and who wrote songs on this project.. But, T all and all you did good.. Hopefull next time you will have a chance to prepare better…

I love the Kelly interview. She has always been my favorite. She sets such a positive example for women especially us brown skin women. Being compared to BEYONCE isnt bad, but KELLY is her own woman, and it seems that she’s trying to convince people even after being in the industry forever.
My only constructive criticism would be that you didnt ask KELLY anything about BEYONCE…they’re friends so of course she’s proud of her. And i LOVE how KELLY said that Destiny’s Child was also great because her and MICHELLE came from it too….Thats why they’re great and thats why BEYONCE is great.
She needed DC to get where she is also.

Tianna, you are on your way gurl! This was one of the most refreshing and intellectual interviews I’ve heard for a while. Your poised questions and the sensitive way you directed your questions, made Kelly feel very inviting to the viewer/audience. I am really more and more impressed with Kelly as an individual artist, than her nemisis, Beyonce. She seemed very comfortable about who she is and for estranged reason did not seem a bit bothered that Beyonce is still on the charts, thus, she is still trying to drop her album….I don’t know? I have to really give it to her. I will be looking forward to taking my lil girl to get Kelly’s new CD, etc. I am really impressed with her totally…Thanks CL!

As far as Ms. Kelly… I’m loving it. What I want people to do is start letting Kelly be KELLY and stop comparing her to Beyonce and STOP blaming everyone under the SUN short of Jesus, for her career. She clearly is in control, and she pushed her album back because SHE wanted to. So let it go!
Kelly is talented in her own right, and I only hope she put that talent to the right use and knocked out a bangin album. She seems so sweet and down to Earth, and for that ALONE… I’ma cop the LP. The industry is full of so many assholes, that the good people deserve support!
