Disney said its new animated princess — Maddy — will be added to its collection of animated princesses used at the company’s theme parks and on consumer products.
The film is set for release in 2009.
John Lasseter, chief creative officer for Disney and the Disney-owned unit Pixar Animation Studios, said the movie would return to the classic hand-drawn animation process, instead of using computer animation that has become the industry standard. He called the film “an American fairy tale.” READ MORE >>>>

IM JUST TIRED OF SEEING AFRICAN CARTOON CHARACTERS(WHENEVER WE GET ONE) LOOKING EXTRA BLACK AND THEIR FACIAL FEATURES EXTRA EXAGERATED(LIKE WE ALL GOT EXTRA BIG LIPS AND EYES) AND YOU ALL KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT EVERYONE CAN POINT OUT ONE BLACK CARTOON CHARACTER AND YOU BE LIKE DAMN WHY IT GOTTA BE ALL LIKE THAT?
LIKE I SAID NOT TO BE COLOR STRUCK AND THEY DONT HAVE TO BE BEIGE LIKE PENNY PROUD, BUT DAMN!!
EVEN IF THEY HAD GIVEN HER CORNROWS(WHICH IVE SEEN IN CARTOONS) IT WOULD’VE BEEN AN ISSUE MY POINT IS IM TIRED OF THESE CARTOONIST’S EXAGGERATING US AS BLACKS. WITH ARIEL,BELLE,CINDERELLA THEY PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO DETAIL, WITH US THEY JUST THE CHARACTER EXTRA DARK LIPS NOSE ETC EXTRA LARGE AND MAKE THE HAIR AS MESSY AS POSSIBLE OR JUST STICK A HUGE AFRO ON THE CHARACTER AND CALL IT A DAY! AND IF YOU DONT SEE IT ANYWHERE YOU CAN SEE IT IN A CARTOON BECAUSE THAT WHERE BLACKS ARE PORTRAYED THE WORSE.
YOU SHOULD TRY TO UNDERSTAND WHERE IM COMING FROM AND READ MY POINT BEFORE POSTING OR IS IT PERHAPS YOUR IGNORANCE IS BIGGER THAN YOUR BRAIN BOOGIEGIRL???
bashyboo you sound stupid as hell…just stop now.
COOKIEMONSTER YOU DONT EXIST TO ME
APPARENTLY YOU JUST WANTED TO POST BUT DONT HAVE ANY SENSE STEP OFF…
umm don’t you have a job to do, kids to take care of, food to eat, something else to do sweetheart.
It’s about damn time, but I’m a little skeptical about the other “cast”. What’s up w/ this voodoo thing and the Prince Harry character? lemme guess- a white man created the plot, right?
I will be buying this for my little girls. I love being able to show them images of themselves on TV.
COOKIEMONSTER STICK TO THE POST AND STOP STICKING TO MY ASS I SEE THAT YOU ARE MY NUMBER ONE FAN BUT ENOUGH IS ENOUGH MOVE ON…
Uhh… yall a few weeks late with this story…
I think this is the cartoon that Alicia Keys is fighting to do the voice for.
Sounds like this movie is sparking controversy before it even comes out. I’ll wait and see how it’s going to be when it comes out.
Would of been nice to see Disney do a movie based in Africa when we were Kings and Queens……then it could of foucused on the King and Queen’s Daughter…the Princess. Damn Maybe I should write a screenplay!!LOL!
Why is she ugly?
thats all good and whatever but disney has been around for 60+ years and they are just now making a BLACK PRINCESS smh thats a damn shame
MADDYY….HMMM WHY CANT SHE BE CALLED DIANA
It’s geting hot up in herre, but I’ll jump in with my two cents:
- I don’t find anything wrong with Maddy, it’s short for Madeline
- I don’t care if she passes the brown paper bag test or not, it’s just about damn time DiZZnEE (thanks to the SIMPSONS) paid some chocolate homage!

Bashyboo
There nothing wrong with maddy .
As for your comments do every one a favour and shut yaah mouth.
Basyboo please! Did I call you stupid? No. I said you sound stupid and you still do. Saying that she is crispy when she is just medium dark brown skin is obviously saying you would prefer to see her light skin. I’m not dark skin so I hope some of the dark skin sisters up here put you in your place. And saying why can’t she have hair like all these other non-Black princesses is to me saing you want Maddy to have White hair. Exaggerating Blacks? Some Blacks are very dark, have big lips, wide noses etc., Maddy does not have big lips or look crispy. She’s pretty as well.
Even though, I say it is about time cuz it is…I must say that the character’s look is sooo wrong…If the movie is about a black princess and is set in New Orleans especially during the 20′s, the character should be at least light skinned. I think that they should’ve put the character’s looks like that for an up to date character. There is nothing wrong with skin color but for the time or place it should’ve been somewhere else. So, when will they make a light skinned one? I would hate it if Beyonce would be the voice…thank God! You see, there might be only one Disney Princess ever and I don’t think that’s fair. They should’ve put a princess in Lion King or something…I hope the movie will become a classic b/c I love Disney movies and almost have all…
Growing up my mother always told me that I was beautiful, she would tell me that black people are known for their thick lips, broad noses and kinky hair and that we are still BEAUTIFUL. She taught me about slavery and what it did to us has a people. She told me that even the lightest (in skin tone) black person is still a ni_ _ er to those people who chooses not to like us because of our skin color. I grew up knowing that I’m beautiful and I’m in love with my chocolate tone as we all should be. I’m 2 months away from welcoming my own chocolate princess into this world and she’ll grow up knowing about her culture and that she’s beautiful.
When I heard that Princess Maddy was coming soon to a theatre near by, I was so happy that I would be able to buy something that represented Black people from Disney for my daughter. Maddy is a very beautiful princess, with her chocolate skin, kinky hair, thick lips and broad nose just like my mom always told me.
Most of the comments on here thus far are very postive and I’m proud of all the individuals who see the beauty in Maddy and themselves. For the ones who were somewhat negative, get to know yourselves and love your blackness(no matter your shade) let your ancestors speak to you through literature and hopefully one day you too will see in the beauty in you.
@ #74 DIANA
Hmmmmmm…why can’t she be called BAMBAMALINA?
Steph, in the 1920s Blacks were the same complexion like they are now. Why should she be light skin? Doesen’t she have a European prince? Do you think Europeans in Blacks in New Orleans in 1920s were happy with each other. Do you think a princess every really existed in New Orleans anyway? So why should her skin complexion matter? That’s make believe, but one thing is for sure is her skin complexion is real. Do you see some Blacks mix with White, not all come out light some come out brown skin like my friend.
I think its great and about time that Disney feature a black animated character on its roster !GREAT .Im not really into animation taht much but I may have to go see this when it hits theaters.
YEA…IM NOT SO SURE ABOUT THE NAME “MADDY”….THEY COULDN’T COME UP WITH ANYTHING ELSE?!? SHEESH!!
to be honest she looks hella stank & straight from the projects but dressed in a swapmeat wedding dress. and why “Maddy” aint nothing wrong with Shaquila, Teneshia, Latrice or even Lashonda.smh @ this white attempt at portraying black girls. but at least we being portrayed. it took years before there was a black Barbie & even then she still had a flat ass.wtf?
I’m glad we have a princess but i’m not too thrilled about maddy as a name and i seriously hope it is short for madison because maddy sounds like she plows the fields, and as far as the comment about the story taking place in new orleans in the 20′s and she needing to be lighter, i agree because most people in that area where creole at that time. i would be pissed if that girls name was quanisha or lacreda but they could have gave her chaznei or something like that. and they do need to upgrade her gear, tinkerbell is already green and she looks like a fairy.
i wonder whom is going to be the voice of maddy???
Why does it have to be set in New Orleans? Why r black pple always associated with New Orleans? I guess the other cinderella came from Orange County so it was already taken.
LMAO @ 63
#87 IT IS SET IN NEW ORLEANS APPARENTLY B/C THE CREATORS WANTED TO GIVE A SORT OF TRIBUTE TO NEW ORLEANS. THEY SAID THAT THEY WANTED TO KEEP THE SPIRIT OF NEW ORLEANS ALIVE AND SHOW PEOPLE THAT NEW ORLEANS WAS AND STILL IS BEAUTIFUL. THEY DON’T WANT IT EVER BE FORGOTTEN.
ALSO, I THINK IT’S SAD FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE DOGGING THIS MAKE BELIEVE, ANIMATED FAIRY TALE. I KNOW I SAID I WANT IT DONE TASTEFULLY BUT THAT DOESN’T MEAN THAT I AM UPSET. DAMN BLACK PEOPLE, THAT’S WHY WE CAN’T GET ANYWHERE!!
WE CONTINUE TO BRING EACH OTHER DOWN. EVEN WITH A FREAKIN CARTOON!!!!! SHE’S BEAUTIFUL AND LOVELY. SHE DOESN’T LOOK LIKE ME AS FAR AS COMPLEXION BUT I CAN BE PROUD B/C SHE IS A BLACK PRINCESS. DAMN. LITTLE BLACK GIRLS NEED A BLACK PRINCESS THAT THEY CAN VISIT AT DISNEY WORLD AND BE FOR HALLOWEEN. I WOULD BE PISSED IF HER HAIR WAS LONG AND DOWN HER BACK AND SHE WAS FAIR. WE COME IN ALL BEAUTIFUL SHADES WITH ALL BEAUTIFUL HAIR TYPES. DON’T LET US BE DEFEATED BY THE WHOLE CONQUER AND DIVIDE THING. THAT’S WHAT THE HATERS WANT…..
BTW, I AM PULLING FOR ANIKA NONI ROSE. SHE HAS THE TALENT ALL THE WAY AROUND!!!!!!!!!
finally a black princess 4 all complaining bout the name atleast she aint called something like bonquisha and any of those predictable names
Ah shucks…lol Maddy I can rock with that my daughter’s name is Madison and Madi is her nickname! My 10 year old is gonna love dat! Damn I am glad there will be another lil Black girl named Maddy!
Initially, I was relieved that Disney was FINALLY introducing a black princess because I cringe when my seven year old daughter receives gifts from the Disney Princess line, a line that does not reflect her at all.
However, when I told my daughter (who, despite my efforts to steer her interests elsewhere, is a Disney Princess fan) that this new princess will be called The Frog Princess, she replied: “Mommy, I don’t look like a frog. Do black princesses look like frogs?”
Now this is from a seven year old. Such negative connotations should have been considered by the boardmembers and creators at Disney and should not be a surprise from bloggers who are dismayed at those of us who aren’t elated about the new Disney Princess.
I showed my daughter pictures of both princesses-Disney’s Maddy and Imagine’s Zya @ http://www.africanprincess.com (another black princess animation coming soon). Both remind my daughter of herself because she is cocoa complexion and sometimes her hair is braided, while other times she wears her natural curly hair in two afro puffs. She is more excited about Zya because she is interested in her African heritage and Zya’s story affords her the opportunity to get closer to the continent and the culture of Africa. Maddy, the slave-named maid, is not appealing to her at all. Believe me, I have taught my daugter about the black experience dating before antebellum America to present. Thus, I am not enthused about the mixed messages she will receive from a story about a black girl who will presumably fall for or be saved by a white prince.
I am not against interracial relationships (with all things being equal and both parties willingly entering into a union, which they were not and usually did not during that era), nor am I racist. I am simply being practical and truthful–parents of all ethnicities desire their children to be immersed in their own culture and traditions, to marry within their cultural group, and to carry on their legacy and cultural ideals and beliefs. Finally, when you introduce others outside of your cultural group to your customs you want them to receive an authentic experience. I don’t believe that Disney will provide this.
FYI, I am a part of a parent concern group that emailed Disney and Oprah for several years about the “absent” Disney Black Princess; although I appreciate their response, I am REALLY disappointed that this storyline is the best that they could create.

@47 this has been my concern as well. If they had used a historically African tale then they would have had historical data to base the characters appearance on. The no one could complain about what she looked like or her name. By making a “black” princess in a story based in 1920 in New Orleans they are further pushing the idea that the black mans history began n America. It did not. African culture being so rich and story telling being such a big part of the culture I find it impossible to believe that they couldn’t come up with something better than this. Oooo No thanks disney – but then they ain’t been getting my dollars so I doubt they’ll miss me at the box office.
Hi, there!..4d54eafbfc1c8dd2634f7655e79225ac
While it’s true that Maddy leaves much to be desired, lets hope that this one cartoon will open more doors and hopefully Disney will be brave enough to create an all black movie….perferably taking place somewhere in the MotherLand…and with a little historical value.
Also, on a deeper note, we must instill a sense of self worth in our children of color, so they wont have to look to a cartoon for guidance. Teach them pride in their brown skin and thick dark hair. We as their teachers need to stress the importance of religion, responsibility and education, and form them into our bright and shining future.
We are a great people and I pray we begin to realize it soon. ——{–{@

I’m Glad there will finally be a BEAUTIFUL BLACK PRINCESS for my daughter (Maddy) aka Madison to add to her Disney Princess collection . Its BEEN LONG our Due. Thank You.
I am very much looking forward to this monumental movie! I’m also very glad that Disney has finally caught up to the times. I know the new princess will be a very big inspiration to ALL little girls, not just Black Americans. ^_^ Thanks Disney!
