HBO PRESENTS: QUEEN LATIFAH & ‘LIFE SUPPORT’

Friday, March 9, 2007

Life Support, executive produced by Oscar®-winning actor Jamie Foxx and starring Oscar®-nominee Queen Latifah, views the African-American community’s HIV crisis through the eyes of a survivor who is a mother, an ex-crack addict, and an AIDS activist named Ana Wallace.

Based on the life of his own sister and his family, Director Nelson George brings this triumphant story of courage and survival to life by using a mix of actors and real people from the HIV/AIDS community.

Watch the embedded video to get more info, and make sure you check it out this Saturday on HBO

I love the fact that BLACK money produced it (Latifah, Foxx), there is a BLACK lead (Latifah), and a BLACK director (George). This speaks to the possibility of what can happen when you dream and work hard.

I saw it and it was alright. It wasn’t as good as I though it would be. But it did a good job at spreading the word abot HIV and AIDS. Especially since many of the women in the movie are really living with the virus. They premiered it for a few days on HBO On Demand (I was shocked to watch it before the real premiere).

I saw a premiere of “Life Support” and there was nothing new! The movies message is about: using condoms, getting checked and taking your meds! All the blame in the movie is put on men! In every case of HIV/AIDS, the woman was infected by a man!

Blaming men plays right into Latifah’s personal lifestyle as a lesbian women who would prefer that all women were the same as her! So, I guess by now you see she’s not a special showcase to me! I question her motives!

The rate of new HIV cases increases 50% more for black women than white women and the movie points to the downlow brothers and drug using husbands who share dirty needles and give it to there wives! What’s interesting is that the rate of new cases increased only 7% more for black men that white men! Hmmm???

When are people gonna start taking responsibility for themselves? Following the premiere, the audience discussed the movie and a single woman stood up and said that she had been infected by a down low brother! Wait, I thought the down low brothers were gay husbands who operated from the closet and infected their wives! Turns out, she had been sleeping around and caught a case from a bi-sexual! So, she was sleeping around and caught a case!

It great that the movie made an effort and it can serve to get people talking, but until people make a conscious decision about the body fluids they take on, there’s no one to blame!

And, I know many women feel that they are victims because they trusted the man…but that’s not gonna cut it in the year 2007!!! Women are too intuitive to the victim card! You know when yo man is tipping out! Hell, Terry McMillan knew Jonathan Plummer was gay long before she admitted it! She probably knew he was shiny before they were married!

Black women be giving it up! Sure there’s a shortage of black men, but don’t go spreading your legs for the first prettyboi who comes alone. Hell, there’s a shortage of white men and Mexican too, but I don’t see them increasing by 50%.

Brothers are in jail, gay or married! Slim pickins! So, sisters are falling for bi-sexuals who are basically men that stick in where ever they can! The prisons are filled with infected brothers! So, do you turn to other races, well…that might not be so easy now that the word is out that black women are the high risk group!

I say rethink your sexual behavior and adopt a zero tollerance policy for yourself! Two people can drive to the clinic and get checked on the same day! Hell, get checked before every encounter if you have to! Extreme safety requires extreme precaution!

Meatloaf,
I completely agree with you. You must take responsibility for yourself.
My friend just contracted the disease after choosing to sleep with her bf of 2 years unprotectedly. Well she was on the pill, but people listen closely…DO NOT USE THE PILL AS YOUR ONLY METHOD OF CONTRACEPTION, it is not good enough.
Unless you both get tested together & completely trust your partner (even then its risky).
Please, please, please people. Be careful. It can happen to anyone. Even young, gorgeous model types & people you could never imagine having it, can carry this awful disease. Never trust a book by its cover.
GET TESTED, PROTECT YOURSELF & STAY HEALTHY.

Meatloaf

22. tamiyah, I really think the days of boyfriend/girlfriend are over! Zero tollerance means, no sex until after marriage!

But, let’s be realistic, because black women and men have no respect for their virginity! So, condoms are the only proven method of protection and they can fail too! I only suggest getting checked to people who have no self-control!

To those with self-control, I would say abstain until marriage! And, after you get married, don’t assume that everything is on the up an up! If he still goes out and parties or he takes weekend trips with the fellas…you got a problem!

In the movie, the down low brother owned and operated a gay bar!!! WTF??? If that didn’t send up a red flag to his wife, I wonder what she was thinking! He told her that the bar was just a way to keep food on the table! Yeah right!!! I’m telling you, the signs and warnings are there!!!

I watched the movie last week along with the extra behind the scenes footage on HBO On Demand. It is a very good movie;regardless if it’s the same “old story” or movie as (some other post mentioned),overall it was good to see. And all the actors were good in it! Evan Ross is a very talented actor,he was great in ATL and I look forward to seeing him in Pride,as well.

Tamiyah,
the pill is birth control, not disease control. It will NOT protect you from diseases.
Meatloaf,
I agree that we need to take responsibility for our own behavior, but the movie didn’t necessarily put the blame on anybody.

I think that the whole “down low” thing has been blown way out of proportion by the media. I don’t think it’s as big a problem as people make it seem and it’s not the reason why black women are getting infected. Black women are gettin infected because we have no morals. Monogamy and self-respect are things of the past and we got our legs open to any and everybody. The down low crap is just a way to further destroy black relationships. Whether your man is cheating with a man or woman, THE SIGNS ARE THERE!! But we have to think of ourselves and our children first. Sex feels good, but it’s not worth dying for. And since most of us are single mothers, we are all our children have. Let’s take care of ourselves ladies.

#27 Ms_Va, the scene in the kitchen put the blame on the husband for using a dirty needle and infecting Latifah! She made a direct statement that it was his fault and other scenes implied that men were the problem!

The scene in the bar implied that the owner was keeping a big secret from his wife…down low! The character played by Evan Ross showed that young men are irresponsible and not taking their meds! The scene with the women in group discussion showed that they were all doing the right things, but they all blamed men who they trusted for their conditions! The bar scene also showed how reckless gay men are, but none of the women in group, on the basketball team or in the marraige were shown to be having sex! How are they getting it then???

Notice how the movie portrayed the daughter with the braided hair as a normal basketball player with a boyfriend! The truth is, if you go to any college or WNBA team, that hair do is the calling card of a lesbian! And, lesbians are the little red devils who sit on the left shoulders of gay men telling them they have rights, because that’s just more oral for them!

I’m sorry sis, but this movie was very slanted and visive! You can call it the state of affairs, but the reality is that women have to take responsibility for their role in their sexuality. The messages on HIV prevention and causes are over 20 years old, but still not as old as the message on righteous living!

A woman’s vagina, and for gay men, the anas provide the best environment for HIV to invade and grow! The problem becomes one of self-esteem, standards and self-respect! Gay men know the guilt, shame and evil consequense of their actions, but women think they have a special swagger when it comes to sex, because societies pressure is for a man and woman to find love!

A lonely woman gets desperate and she gives in to the first germ that comes alone! And, even if she’s known him all her live, she still has to make a conscious decision equal to the guilt of a closeted gay man before she spreads her legs and welcomes foreign matter from a “boyfriend” or lover! Nearly every girl on the planet has her virginity explained to her!

I’m not pissed at the movie, because any information will serve to get people talking, but you can’t upgrade from “Life Support” without proper treatment! And, until someone addresses the sexuality of responsible women and men, families will be pulling the plugs on those “Live Support” machines!

You sound like you’re self-correcting!!! I agree with all you said in post #28!

I can only add one thing and that’s about “Girls Night Out”! GNO is a special time for Latifah and Missey! Asking ladies to take care of themselves is a call to order for their lesbian cause!

Ms Va, you sound like a woman who genuinely cares about the safety of her sisters and brothers, without any motive! Until we come proper and start keeping it real, these “Life Support” movies will always fall short!

Anyway, back to the topic at hand. I’m glad Latifah and others are instrumental in the awareness of this dreaded and horrific disease. Awareness and education is what we need to combat this killer.

I heard about this movie. I hope it captures alot of young peoples attention & opens their eyes in making them become ALOT MORE ALERT & AWARE of HIV/AIDS.

That is a REAL disease and it is taking alot of hispanic & blacks (in the minority communities). & That is sad. With all the promotion, and wake up advertisements out there & celebrity involvement–you’d think the AIDS & HIV population rates will be going down but it keeps rising. That means alot of folks still walking around with the mentality that “it cant happen to them”.

It is so sad.
