If am being asked to be in a movie with men kissing, I would do the movie because I know that comes with the territory. I can see where you are coming from I can’t understand why people can’t see acting is a job but there are definitely certain roles I wouldn’t do if I were an actor. But, to say Cuba Gooding Jr. shouldn’t have played mentally challenged is to say Jamie Foxx shouldn’t have played blind in Ray. I can understand an actor not taking a role because it personally doesn’t appeal to them, but to claim that they aren’t doing a role because they’re trying to bring morality to the film industry is just ridiculous.

Films are not about morality. Sure, some may have a moral message, but the industry itself has nothing to do with morality. Film is art. Art transcends morality. Art has the license to depict everything that’s good AND bad with our society. Art asks questions. Good art gives answers.

Art is above morality. Art questions morality. Censoring it by saying “I’ll only kiss white women” or “I’m not doing it because somebody naked is in it” is no different than censoring art. It’s like covering paintings because they portray nudity or violence. Intellectual immaturity at its finest.

Not only that, but some people don’t seem to grasp that, when an actor takes a role, it’s no longer the Actor. It’s the CHARACTER, and the characters actions does not at all reflect on the actor’s on moral fiber. The actor is simple the canvas for bringing that character to life on screen, and nothing more. It’s like when people come down on Halle Berry’s role in Monster’s Ball for “degrading herself”. HALLE wasn’t degrading herself. Halle’s CHARACTER was degrading herself. Actor’s play ROLES, and roles portray PEOPLE who reflect the goings-on of real life. Nudity happens in real life. And if Jennifer Hudson can’t grasp that fact, then as much as I love her she’s never going to make it as a serious actress in Hollywood. But different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

Art can address morality in a society but that depends on the morality of the individual in juxtapostion to society at large. It’s up to one’s own discretion whether or not they want to push boundaries and set boundaries around themselves. Art is also used to affect the perception of people. It’s the CHARACTER, and the characters actions does not at all reflect on the actor’s on moral fiber. The actor is simple the canvas for bringing that character to life on screen, and nothing more. It’s like when people come down on Halle Berry’s role in Monster’s Ball for “degrading herself”. HALLE wasn’t degrading herself. Halle’s CHARACTER was degrading herself. Actor’s play ROLES, and roles portray PEOPLE who reflect the goings-on of real life. Nudity happens in real life. And if Jennifer Hudson can’t grasp that fact, then as much as I love her she’s never going to make it as a serious actress in Hollywood. But different strokes for different folks, I suppose.

Hence why I said that it’s one thing for her to turn down a role because it doesn’t personally appeal to her. That would be a case of her acting by charge of her own personal moral code. But to say she’s not doing this movie because it would be a disservice to aspiring black women is her placing her own morality on a pedestal, and a slap in the face to actresses who were more willing to give their all to a film for the sake of art and their craft.

It has nothing to do with Jennifer loosening up. I don’t care if she takes a role or not. What bothers me is this sudden idea that her not taking this role because there’s nudity IN the movie puts her on some higher pedestal than other actors–when really it’s a petty stance and one that works more towards censoring creative expression than liberating by applying some extremely relative concept of what’s “moral” and what isn’t (which is why seperation of church and state is a perfect concept. Morality is fluid).

It reminds me of a time when showing films with racial undertones was taboo and considered “immoral” because it exposed tensions that people were uncomfortable with.

I also find issue with your opinion that Cuba is some way morally flawed because of a role he choose to portray on screen. It is very judgemental and backwards for you to think that because he PLAYED a role in a movie that somehow it translates his secret desire to LIVE the role. I guess a man kissing his son goodnight before tucking him in is somehow perpetuating a subliminal message to his child that advocates homosexuality, or two male friends who kiss on the cheek (as many europeans do) express hidden desires,right? And I know there’s a difference between a kiss and simulated sex between men but by your definition it really doesn’t matter…you’d loose respect for them regardless.

And let’s discuss Cuba’s portrayl of a mentally challenged person. How is this somehow degrading ? Do you not think that there are hundreds of thousands of “retards” living their lives on a daily basis? So his choice to help tell a story of how a persons mind can sometimes overcome the disabled vessel is what…offensive to you or not a part of reality, whether it be yours or anyone elses?

All that being said, the reality of the situation is that Jennifer does have the right to choose, but I don’t think she chose this path due to her convictions, but rather because of the hype people have put into her “hype box”. How can she do anything that would cause her a backlash after so many people have pegged her as the Butter Queen of Mayberry, especially when compared to the likes of “that other woman”, which I think is totally unfair to her. She didn’t go on American Idol to become a gospel singer, but rather a pop star, just like she didn’t become an actress to portray a nun in Sister Act 12. To be a player in Hollywood you must be flexible and just because you get paid monetary compensation doesn’t make you a sinner. If she wants to play a nun those roles are out there, but trust me…nobody’s watching!

Everyone is not the same!!! Who knows what will happen. She could get another role in a year. A better one without Nudity. And she might get an award for that one!
