..an innovative, environmentally friendly institution she hopes will be a model for public education.
The Seven Fountains Primary School was funded by Oprah’s Angel Network, a public charity that supports organizations and projects focused on education and literacy.
“The Seven Fountains School is an example of what schools in South Africa can become,” Winfrey said at the school’s formal dedication outside the remote town of Kokstad in eastern KwaZulu-Natal province.
Dressed casually in a cream top and white pants, the talk-show host danced and sang with teachers and children who lauded her with cries of “Long live Oprah, long live!”

Another great feat for Oprah!
Hey I love this woman. And she is sooo great.
Haha GO OPRAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
GO OPRAH! She has such a caring heart.
GO OPRAH PHUCK ALL THE HATERS!
Oprah Do Ya Thing!
Oprah is amazing.
GO OPRAH!!!
You know what, people can talk all the BS they want, but OPRAH really contributes to the world. She is INSPERATIONAL and there’s a reason why GOD blessed her to be in the POSITION she’s in, because she uses her power for GOOD. She better WORK!
No matter how those ungrateul negroes try to demonize Oprah’s endeavors, she keeps pushing on.
amn Oprah makes me want to be a better man. Becuase of this woman I ask my self what can I do to leave a mark in this world after I’m gone, what can I do to help my brothers and sisters out.
Oprah does so many things for people, yet it amazes me that some still find something to bitch about. SMH.
Get it Ms O!
People can say what they want about Oprah, she’s one of the greatest souls alive. She’s a blessing to the world.
Oh Oprah. I’m speechless. She brings out the best in us all. This woman is a heaven sent. I LOVE HER TO BITS.
Big ups Oprah.
YA GOTTA LOVE OPRAH
thats cool… god for her and those african kids… but can she slide me a couple dollas verizon cut off my phone..damn being a broke college student
Oprah is a phenomenal woman. There are just no other words to describe.
Make it rain on 50…
Love Oprah….She’s doin it… Despite ALL of the ungratefulness, she’s still passionate about giving back to others….Gotta admire that!
A positive role model in my life.
someone i admire for giving back and being strong black woman.
God Bless You Oprah!
I saw this on the weekend newpapers. Nice one Oprah.
Chante, you are right, she is the greatest soul indeed.
I think this is great, but my only issue is why not build a school here in the US. There are so many under priviliged black schools and kids here. I know she does more than so many in the industry, but I think America needs some schools like this too. Maybe that will inspire the multi-million and billionaires to do more for us. We have a long way to go.
Long Live Oprah !!!
God bless Oprah, she’s an amazing woman. But her institutions are based on American principles which are uneasily applicable to the South African context. Moreover….BIG UPS!!!
I’m glad Oprah building schools in parts of South Africa, but damn i don’t know, to me its seems excessive in regards to all the problems in other parts of Africa, i mean is dis really of top priority wit all the shit dats going on over there. Her money would be better spent campaigning for fair trade, which is a prime reason why many African countries can’t get of their feet or maybe aiding projects working on the water crisis situation. Africa is a continent filled with resources that the world needs and you telling me nothing can be done to get the money back to the ppl. Spend money on dat and once economies are stabilized, then work on fly schools.
#19, I understand what you are saying, but Oprah can’t do everything for everybody. Think about it really. Which kids need help the most? I would have to think that studying in a building with no windows, little electricity and running water, and only four toilets is far worst than the poorest school in America. Trust, I do know that there are some piss poor schools in the USA, and it’s a damn shame, but what about Bob Johnson or Michael Jordan or Tiger Woods or any other wealthy athlete or Diddy or Jay-Z or Russell Simmons or any other wealthy entertainer or anyone other wealthy black people period, getting together and building schools here. What about people like you and me volunteering, taking time to tutor, or raise money, or do something to improve these poor American schools? I know this sounds like a cliche, but if black people could come together, we can do a lot of great things. Also, we rely too much on our government to fix our schools. If this government can take their slow ass time coming to our aide in New Orleans, what makes us think they are going to fix our schools anytime soon? I don’t want to sound racist, but we need to get out of this mentality of wanting to have every thing the government gives white people and wanting to be treated fairly by our government, because that’s not happening anytime soon. It really saddens me that we can’t work together more than what we are doing now.
Damn Oprah can the US get a school?
All I’m gone say is… THE WILL OF GOD! Work Ms. O!!!
More power to you elbow oprah but i agree with some there are more complex problems in Africa that need help oh well i guess anything is something right?.
#19 Queenie
Despite the fact that Oprah does indeed have *several* programs to benefit children in the United States, the truth of the matter is that she’s not building these schools in the United States because the United States doesn’t need them.
I hate to say it, but us American’s don’t know how good we have it. American schools are not “poor” at all. Did you know that despite the fact that the United States does NOT rank number 1 in overall quality of education, it still spends more money on education than ANY OTHER NATION in the world? (http://www.usatoday.com/n...ducation-comparison_x.htm)
A lot of people like to blame the US’s education problems on lack of funds, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. American schools aren’t poor at all, there’s more than enough money to go around. The PROBLEM is with MONEY MANAGEMENT. Shoddy school districts thinking that more money should go to one school than should go to another. Inner city schools getting the rough end of the deal and, when they DO luck out and get funds, being too stupid to appropriate them properly. American schools rather spend their money on insignificant things like grass and a fresh coat of paint, and making sure everyone in the ATHLETICS department lives like a king, instead of appropriating much needed funds to academics–scholastics and “dorky” academic student groups that everyone thinks are “uncool”; new textbooks and updating teaching materials; and RAISES for teachers so they actually give a damn about their jobs. No, most schools would rather shit their money away making sure their damn sports teams continue to do well while remaining dumb as fuck.
Africa, on the other hand, has no money. Period. So before you question Oprah about building schools in Africa instead of here in the US, question the US itself. Instead of asking for more money, ask where the money we HAVE is going.
#22 Dat Dude
I agree that Africa is PLAGUED with problems right now, but the state of their education systems IS one of them and one that CAN’T be ignored. And, while Oprah may be one phenomenal, BAD bitch..she IS only one woman. And besides, I think it’s smart that she’s focusing on the educating the youth, because it’ll be the educating the young people of Africa that some of Africa’s problems will be alleviated, I guarantee it.
These kids aren’t coming from royalty, or even the moderately well-to-do, which is usually the only kids in Africa that get a decent education. These kids that Oprah’s taking in are the poorest of the poor; the lowest of the low. They’ve seen it because they lived it. Oprah is taking these kids and giving them the tools needed so that, when they graduate (and go to any college of their choice, most likely top-tiered, for FREE) they will be able to intrinsically understand, lobby, and create CHANGE for their home, Africa. Oprah is breeding leaders. Oprah is breeding hope for Africa.
Oprah is a Modern Day Missionary !!!
thats it O, get the steppin
God bless, OPRAH! Unlike many other celebrities, she uses her fame and fortune to better the lives of others, and I salute her for it! What an amazing role model!
To hell with anyone who opposes what she’s doing. Until they can do the same or better, then shut up! No one cares about your opinions!
I totally agree with #23.
Plus I know many people that work in the school system here in the metro Atlanta area and alot of these kids and parents could are less about getting a good education, they are more worried about when Jay-Z next CD is coming out and who dresses the best when they decide to come to school.
@ 27 – Wonderful words. I agree wholeheartedly.
Got nothing but love for Oprah. She is letting her actions speak for her! @27 i definitely agree. She is building future leaders for Africa, which they surely need!
More power to ya’ soul sista! But I must say.. what about African boys? Ladies get mad if you wish… but this seems to be a slight to black males on O’s part.
Oprah is THAT DEAL….although I think there would be greater change affected in Africa if she were to open a leadership academy for young African boys. Can you imagine the potential of churning out 150 + black MALE leaders?! The possibilities are too great! Oprah knows that even she cannot do this, that would be entirely too much for the world to witness and her image would be forever tarnished that even she is not above.
Oprah is really making a difference in these people’s lives. I applaud her for being such a strong Black woman. A lot of people talk, but Oprah does the damn thing. God bless her and her efforts.
Are the leadership possibilities for males greater than those of females? Wow, that’s bold. I’m not sure if that’s what being infered or not. My opinion is that when these girls have a familiy, with their education, they have power to raise futher leaders. Women are very nourishing and play a greater role raising children. I’m not sure, but aren’t most African countries lead by men anyway? It’s her money, so she can spend it how she wants. It’s crazy people are questioning how she spends her money to do something good. Would any of you be okay with someone telling you how to spend YOUR money, for the charities you give to? And that’s if you give anything at all.
@ # 19 & 24, there are already plenty of such schools here in America, Africa barely has any, aaaight. let her do her damn thing, dont hate appreciate, just cause its not happening in your backyard dont mean its not as important.
