Remember, whether they stay street or evolve, they are all in the game to make $$$$. Actually, I say they sell out, once the music is “edited” for radio play, not that I agree with the cuss-out-my-mama lyrics. I find it funny and disheartening that it seems that the great use and influence of free speech in the music is used by African American rappers to disparge/disrespect Black women, rave about Italian luxury goods and expensive French champagne, brag about expensive cars. We need all this, but we need to be open to a spectrum of messages in our music. Problem is, that we are programmed to only “like” the most provocative and profane aspects of wrap music. We’ve come so far, but have a long as way to go. The music should be fun and make you want to cut the rug sometimes and get busy. But it should also seek to inspire and ecourage. Ok, I’m soundin’ like preacher Bill.
But rap has been good to a lot of people who otherwise would have never gotten into their tax bracket if they had to slave away getting educations like many of us.
Remember back in the day when Eve was Black? I miss her. Now she’s a super weave with the “Hollywood smile” that probably costed her a $3600. I was flipping through a magazine today and all I could say was ‘she’s changed’.
