Today marks the 10th anniversary of the passing of iconic Hip Hop artist Notorious B.I.G, also known to family and friends as Christopher Wallace.
Brooklyn born Wallace was tragically shot and killed on March 9th, 1997 while promoting an upcoming album in California. Fueled by the on-going East Coast/West Coast rap war of the late 90s that also resulted in the death Tupac Shakur, Biggie’s untimely death still remains unsolved and a mystery.
But with death comes mourning, and finally a celebration of life and remembrance. Bad Boy records celebrates this anniversary by releasing Notorious B.I.G’s Greatest Hits album, full of some of B.I.G’s most successful work. May he rest in peace.

That’s crazy how it’s still unsolved. RIP Big!!!

RIP B.I.G.
R.I.P biggie i wonder how the rap game would be if he was still alive
Love Biggie, his flow and word usage made his songs crazy! Rip.
“The greatest rapper of all time died on March 9…”- Canibus
Whether you agree or disagree, love him or hate him, The Notorious B.I.G. saw his life cut short in a hail of gun fire nearly ten years ago.
But Big’s life, lyrics and legacy are set to live on with the release of The Notorious B.I.G.’s Greatest Hits. The 17 track LP will feature Biggie’s hit singles, some remixes and two previously unreleased tracks.
For Bad Boy Records Executive VP, Harve Pierre, releasing this album makes perfect sense.
“It’s time to celebrate the legacy of the Best that ever did it,” he says “We realize just how connected fans remain to his classic work and wanted to issue a ‘GREATEST HITS’ to celebrate the life of Christopher Wallace. We’ll always love Big Poppa and are forever thankful for what he has done for the Bad Boy family and Hip-Hop culture.”
Diddy echoes Pierre ’s sentiments and hails B.I.G. as the greatest emcee to do it and a good friend.
“Christopher Wallace was more than an artist, he was my friend,” he says of his fallen label mate. “The Notorious B.I.G., as most knew him, was a rapper, a story teller, and a prolific poet. However, many didn’t have a chance to see the Father, Husband, and Man that I knew. Through his words, persona, life, and music, he was able to open doors and creates opportunities for Hip-Hop as a whole. I wanted to celebrate his legacy, life, and work as we mourn his senseless death 10 years ago. The release of ‘GREATEST HITS’ makes it clear to the world why the Notorious B.I.G is the greatest rapper of all time.”
The first posthumous release, 1999’s Born Again is certified double platinum.

When will black people stop mourning some rapper who didnt contribute anything of value to their history or culture? Are we that ignorant? Icons who have been more relevant to our people pass and no one in the community cares. James Brown is already forgotten. I bet you wont see anyone walking around “da hood” with the T shirt with Brown’s face on it. Yet we are constantly bombarded with the images of criminals who happened to rap like Tupac and Biggie. We dress our children in clothes with their images on them. We revere the music like it relays something of dignity and morals. Tupac was a rapist and a buffoon; he wasnt a martyr. Biggie was a fat ignorant thug. I am ashamed of black people when we dont let it go and expect the government to investigate these street thug murders. Like Chris Rock said, they were not assisnated – those niggers got shot!
@ 13, a murder is a murder. It should be investigated. No one deserves to die. Sure some people put themselves into situations (i.e. gangbangin’). But Biggie was leaving a party. He had children, a mother. How can you say people shouldnt mourn him.
10 years! Are you serious?

Bill Said:
Your Logic is flawed.
James Brown was a convicted Felon who served time in Jail.
James Brown also was a known drug abuser and a person who beat on woman.
Those facts have nothing to do with the great body of music that he created during his life time.
Notorious Big may have been many things, and I’m sure he did some things wrong in his life, but those facts also have nothing to do with the great bodyof music that Notorious Big produced in HIS life time.
All of our “Icon’s” have done things that were not good.
If you are a Human being, then you are NOT perfect yourself.
@ 13 …Baby Steps
and I have seen people walking around “the hood” in James Brown T-shirts. Don’t be so quick to see the bad in our people. Don’t be so quick to repeat the word “nigger” just because some comic said it. I love Chris Rock, but everything he says isn’t Bible.
You call the man fat and a “nigger” when so many white celebrities are infecting the minds of black youth and making them feel like they have to be thin/blonde/white.
People like you are a part of the problem. You point out the flaws of those of your own race on some self righteous shit (yet you are on this site).
You are a wolf in sheeps clothing.
Singing…. We’ll always loooove B.I.G. Poppa.
Rest In Peace B.I.G
Damn, listening to these song brings back good memories of my early teenage years in Philly… I first heard Juicy at 13 and it was one of my favorites from biggie.I think I will purchase this album…
THE GREATEST RAPPER EVER
to 13 —
Actually, most musicians when you look at it have been in jail and have a record at one time or another for something — I guess that would make all of them criminals.
Even thou you might not have agreed with the lifestyle of Biggie and Pac, you shouldn’t have been glad to see them dead. They never harmed your children nor made them do things they shouldnt’ be doing in the first place. They were merely reporters of the lives that they lived (although there’s more than one side to both of them).
I will admit that they are responsible for making gangsta rap an easy genre to get revenue from without much of an effort. The irony is despite their surroundings, some of Pac’s life wasn’t all bad and neither was Biggie’s. At least that can be admitted as opposed to some rappers who COMPLETELY are given a gangsta image without much merit to the word.
R.I.P. B.I.G.
R.I.P Biggie I am truely missing you rap has not been the sanme without you.It is a damn shame this murder is still unresolved and someone out there knows something.I will always love Big Poppa.
To Tiana, Lil Christopher, Faith, Ms. Wallace, Puff, Lil’ Kim, Charlie Baltimore, Junior M.A.F.I.A., all B.I.G.’s family, friends, industry acquaintances, and fans…. keep your heads up!
RIP Big!!!!It doesn’t seem like 10 years have gone by but you are truly missed…..
Rip Biggie
RIP BIG
@16
BILL,
YOU COULDN’T HAVE SAID THAT ANY BETTER
SOME PEOPLE (@13) JUST AREN’T LIVING IN REALITY
AND HOW THE HELL THE GOVERNEMNT IS GONNA DO ANY TYPE OF INVESTIGATION!!! THEY’RE THE BIGGEST THUGZ
We miss you Big!
I actually remember where I was when I heard that Big was dead. I was in a nightclub overseas. It was sad to me seeing as how I was a huge fan at the time. I couldn’t believe it. I was in denial and I kept thinking to myself, Damn, another one??
Now that I’m older it’s still sad. But what’s sadder is that in the last 10 years the youth haven’t come a great deal further. They’re still killing each other via crack, bullets and words. And it’s really too bad because in another 10 years we might have another “Biggie” who raps about the hard knock life. But will that help to save a young gun slinger from making the same mistakes Big made? Probably not.
There’s a place for everything in this world (rap, violence, love songs). I just wish death before 40 wasn’t such a prevalant theme in the black male community. Such a waste of talent.
@ 13 We all sin and fall short of the glory. That means you too. But I’m not going to make this about you. I can’t believe ten years have passed. R.I.P Biggie. **singing** “On that morning when this life is over I know I’ll see face”.
I agree Ms_Mac…it is very, very sad. I can’t believe its been 10 years since Big and Pac passed…thats crazy.
RIP Biggie
RIP Biggie! We miss you
Damn, the price of Turkey Breast hasn’t gone up much in the past 10 years!!!
#13,
I think its sad that you don’t think we should mourn the passing of a person, must less a black person. Something is seriously wrong with your comment. While you may not agree with the life path he has chosen it sounds real ignorant of you to say we shouldn’t mourn his death.
I guess the same should go for your when you die since you haven’t contributed anything of historical value to our culture except for making a dumb @ss comment on concrete loop.
These joints are still hot… Fiyah. RIP
As someone who came up in hip-hop and was in one prime of my career (more to come!) I was saddened by BIG’s death because it ushered in the era of hip-hop that we have now. Not only that it was the end of the era of creativity and fun and artistry in the music, in my opinion. Those days were great – so many artists were out doing different things and now people are rushing to do the same thing.
I revere the lives of any black man or woman because every life counts. To say different means you lack respect for life. Period.
To say that art is any less than any thing else that black people have done is just plain stupid. I’m sure there were nights Martin Luther king listened to Mahalia Jackson or James Brown or whoever for the strength to go on. Someone later may have found that strength in Biggie or Tupac. Every generation has its prophets who reach people where they are. Don’t discredit their achievements. Rest in peace to all we have lost both behind and in front of the scenes in the music business. There are several people who’s names you don’t know including the seven other people who died with Aaliyah who made their contributions to this industry. May they ALL rest in peace.
Rest in peace Big
FACE – shut the fuck up with that bullshit…..
hood_shit – i’m going need you to stop giving shout out to biggies mistresses
if biggie, pac and even easy e was alive we wouldnt have this piece of shit we call music today.
RIP BIGGIE..
RIP Biggie!
LOL…some people have no clue what ignorant is…they just type out their ass…lol
Anyway…damn…10 yrs…can’t believe it!! I do remember when Bad Boy was the shyt…don’t think that’ll happen again…I don’t know why people even still sign with them.
R.I.P. BIG! Still one of my favs
@#13 you are so ignorant Biggie was one of the if not the greatest rappers who ever lived, Im from Brooklyn and trust we miss you Big.You will never be forgotten God bless your spirit and soul and that your spirit will live on in your children and family and friends.
10 years goes by so quick.
…R.I.P…
yeah i miss you too big, he brought class, style, gutterness, and being humble to the game .he had skills. he was a great rapper .man my father told me a couple of days ago .can’t no rapper out these days be him .and thats real. he had his own style ,its other legends. but they do them. like az,scarface, rakim, big l r.i.p,krs 1 ,LL, slick rick, tilib, eminem, nas ,jigga, pac r.i.p,and others.they do them .and even though they are great at what they do .they just wasn’t him. and they never tried to be which is why i repect them . big said things differently. he was creative. and talented. he had swagger he was truthful. he said some out right crazy things mad you wanna press replay every time .and then put the song on repeat .and most of all a reallly really good hearted person. and i can’t stand to see his mother hurt so bad .that gets to me every time . rest in peace big you are never forgotten. and never can be replaced .
Cosigns with no. 13….however, Biggie didn’t deserve to die, but his lifestyle contributed to his death. Yes, James Brown has troubles with the law, but his body of music was uplifting to our people. You cannot compare Biggie to James Brown. In fact, James Brown just might be forgotten in about 3-5 years…real talk.
Things were not all great in hip hop in 1997 so stop it with the nostalga! In 2010 when hip hop turns to absolute doom we will look back to this era and say that it wasn’t so bad…please black people…stop playing yourselves. Biggie is a clear example if you live by the gun, you better be damn sure you’re ready to lay next to it. (Heck, he even said he was READY TO DIE). I hope Faith raises his children to be produtive citizens even if they don’t cut checks to NAACP or UNICEF…
Puff will continue to profit from this man’s death as Biggie’s mother admitted on the Wendy Williams Experience…
THOU I LIKED BIGGIES MUSIC I CAN’T SAY HE WAS THE GREATEST BECAUSE THEIR WAS PAC. 2PAC GREATEST OF ALL TIMES. REST IN PEACE BIG AND PAC.
Get Money used to be my shit! Can’t believe its been so long…
I will always remember that day for one it’s my birthday and he was the greatest rapper ever. Miss you Big Poppa you will always live in my heart.R.I.P

I sort of agree with #13, to a degree, lol. I think he took it a little too damn far but I understand the phenomenon that he’s addressing. Black people deify entertainers and athletes and look to them as inspirations or for leadership in their community because they either don’t know or don’t acknowledge any credible history. It’s why blacks call hip-hop a “culture”, lol. The brother was a tremendous talent and if you wish to commemorate his death that’s fine, but if anything his life should be remembered as a cautionary tale. According to his own mother, the brother sought the street life, it wasn’t his only option like it is for some brothers. Get over that investigation stuff too because that case will get resolved around the same time that blacks get reparations.
I think the people that came at #13 look far more ignorant than he did because at least he tried to back up his claims. The word “ignorant” has become a word that people use when you disagree with the opinion of the majority, lol. No disrespect but most of ya’ll probably couldn’t even define ignorance. Enough with all that bullshit about how “we can’t judge” and “we all fall short”. It’s an OPINION, not a damn judgement. A judgement is what these black men get before a conviction and these police officers get before an exoneration.
^true
If my favorite entertainer died I would be sad though, so I can understand. I just don’t like that I have to hear about Biggie on my birthday every year.
Damn ten years… B.I.G
Damn Puff ran Badboy into the ground! Badboy had the rap game locked down in the ninties.. lots of good rap came out of that decade, I don’t even listen to the bullshit rap artist of today. Yall remember artist like,
Tribe called Quest, De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, Queen La, Monie Love, Stetsasonic, Brand Nubian, X Clan, PE, Gangstarr,EPMD “SCSU!”, K Solo, Redman “his ass been around for a minute!” The Doc, NWA, Too Short, E-40,Black Moon, Smif n Wesson, The Pharcyde, early Outkast,Mad Lion, Lil Vicious,Patra,Yo Yo, Pete Rock CL Smooth.. I could go on forever.. Rap sucks big time now!
I can’t believe this post only got 50 comments so far and J. Hud last I checked had 109. Did we forget already how much of an icon Biggie was to hip hop?
Judah,
You have a valid point.
We should not Deify ANY artist.
Biggie Smalls was a former crack dealer who rapped about drug dealing & killing
Tupac was a wannabe (he really was a kid from the suburds..Never sold drugs, Never was in a gang, Never did time) who rapped about gang banging & illicit sex.
To say that they died before their time is a understatement.
They should not have died at all
BUT
They DID die rapping about the “Life they lived”.
Now, in the same breath, James Brown certainly wasn’t a role model for the Kids to look up to,
Neither was Charlie Parker,Miles Davis,John Coltrane or George Clinton…
Yet I own all of THOSE artist’s Albums.
My Point: It great to listen to the Music, and to get something out of it…
But to make a “god” out of that person IS a sin.
* It’s unfortunate, that the Young brothers out on the streets that are Hustling (Drug Dealers) Live and Die by the Music of Biggie, Tupac, 50 Cent, Snoop Dog, Cash Money, Master P and the rest…
Those particular artist “Glamorize” Thug Life, Hustling and Going to the strip club.
That Music (Hip Hop Music) speaks to a generation.
Is it a good thing ?
Perhaps not, but it is what it is…..
You can’t hustle listening to Jazz or Gospel Music, I guess
LMAO @ 49 giving us the official list of best MCs!
smh@ him putting jadakiss in the top 5
hip-hop truly is dead & it died on the same day as Biggie.real talk
RIP BIG
you legacy & music lives on playa
NY STAND UP
Oh I forgot one valid point..
Back in the day of James Brown, Miles Davis, John Coltrain, George Clinton, all of those artist were know for their Drug use, and they all died before their time (except for George Clinton, who is still alive, but real crazy) because of their over indulgence of Drugs….
Nowday’s the Great Hip Hop Artist Like Biggie & Tupac get killed in Drive by Shooting, because of the Life they glamorized on Wax….
Really, what is the differance between Artist “then & now”
Both groups had “self destructive” behaviour and Both group lived their lives on the edge…
RIP BIGGIE
YO Biggie is definately missed. There is a void in Hip Hop that still has not been filled. Over on Highbrid Nation we are celebrating Biggie’s life and encouraging people to stop by and just give thier thoughts on the late veteran. You may want to check it out.
RIP BIGGIE
Biggie Smalls was the illest. RIP 10 years went by fast. Anyway I hope he’s in heaven and I still got Ready to Die. That was the SH*T!
