Sinbad, born David Adkins (November 10, 1956 - March, 14, 2007) was an American stand-up comedian and actor. He became known in the late 1980s and 1990s, appearing on several television series and starring in the feature films Houseguest (1995), First Kid and Jingle All the Way (both 1996). Sinbad was born in Benton Harbor, Michigan to Rev. Dr. Donald and Louise Adkins. He attended college between 1974 and 1978 at the University of Denver in Denver, Colorado, where he lettered two seasons for the basketball team.

Sinbad was in the US Air Force as a Boom Operator aboard the KC-135. He was almost booted out with a dishonorable discharge for various misbehavior including going AWOL. For him, the military wasn’t about service, but a vehicle for getting the attention of his idols, the Harlem Globetrotters. Being a 6′5″ former college athlete, his plan was to play basketball in the Air Force, get noticed by the Globetrotters or another pro team and just leave.

“I didn’t make the Air Force basketball team and went into denial,” he says. “So, I kept going AWOL. My mother kept begging me to go back. I told her, `No, I’m not going back. I’ll just grow a beard. They won’t recognize me. I’ll just be another Black man with a beard.’ I was going to Georgia Tech to learn about computers. I’d go AWOL all the time. I’d just leave. I’d come back, hoping they’d throw me out.” But they didn’t.

In 1981, things began to change. The comedy bug hit him when he participated in an Air Force Talent Show. He won several contests on the base in Kansas. “That kept me alive,” he says. He began serving as emcee and getting laughs for it.

Under the professional name Sinbad, he began his career in the 1980s, appearing on Star Search and The Redd Foxx Show. At one time, Sinbad hosted his own talk show, VIBE, and portrayed the goofy coach Walter Oakes on A Different World (a spinoff of The Cosby Show). He also had his own show, “The Sinbad Show”, in the early 1990s on Fox. The show proved to be family-worthy, but was cancelled due to low ratings. He was also featured in a late 1990s infomercial for Tae Bo, where he claimed that he was successfully using the Tae Bo system to become an action star. He was the host of Showtime at the Apollo (formerly It’s Showtime At The Apollo). He had originally hosted from 1989 to 1991 and was the temporary host in 2005 while regular host Mo’Nique was on maternity leave.

During the 1990s, Sinbad guest-starred on an episode of Nickelodeon’s All That. In one sketch, he played the father of recurring character Ishboo, humorously dubbed “Sinboo”. He also made a cameo appearance in the comedy movie Good Burger, starring Kenan & Kel, as “Mr. Wheat,” a short tempered teacher whose car gets crushed by a giant realistic hamburger. His character was modeled after Gough Wheat, a past teacher of the movie’s producer at White Station High School in Memphis, Tennessee.

Sinbad’s film roles consist of the comedy Houseguest, which was released in January of 1995 and grossed $26m in North America, as well as the films First Kid and Jingle All the Way.

Sinbad was referenced in the Family Guy episode “A Very Special Family Guy Freakin’ Christmas” where a bored Peter Griffin states, “This is about as funny as Sinbad. Not the comedian, he’s hilarious, the sailor. Though I guess he wasn’t meant to be that funny to begin with.” Family Guy referenced Sinbad again in a scene where Stewie loses to him on Star Search.

He was also referenced on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air when Will is aspiring to be a stand-up comic. His uncle Phil is none too enthused about the idea so Will says: “I bet Sinbad’s parents supported him.” To which Uncle Phil replies: “They named him Sinbad! He had two options: pirate or comic!”

Sinbad was also referenced in the Candlejack episode of Freakazoid, where some kids were naming what ‘the scariest thing in the world’ would be. Freakazoid says, “No, the scariest thing in the world would be if they gave Sinbad another TV show.” The kids then run, screaming, into their cabins.

Black men saw these white girls in pornos, seen the big time, white rich men with white girls on their arms, and they see them all over tv. Wow…PRIDE, was an excellent movie, Mr. T Howard has definitely grown, my question to him is, is he the light or can he see the light, either one, he is out of the tunnel and is now swimming in the ocean, and have so much more success ahead of him. I kinda-sorta met Terrance Howard several years ago in Philly. He was JUST about to blow-up in his career when I saw him. It was at a Friendly’s Restaurant in Philly and he brought with him 3 of the whitest kids I’ve ever seen on a black man. Anyway, his name escaped me for a moment because I was just excited that it was him, cause he’s a wonderful actor. So, I calmed my exitement and politely approached him and said “excuse me, I know you’re probably busy, but aren’t you…” then..he cut me off, rolled his eyes and said “NO!! I’m NOT!” I didn’t even get a chance to finish my dang sentence. Then he was rude and beligerant as HELL to the staff at the Restaurant — only there for 3 minutes and he had an attitude that he wasn’t being served fast enough. I was so surprised with how he acted, I sounded like Flava Flav and said to myself: “Wowwww….” So…I give him props for being a talented and gifted actor…but two thumbs go way down for his asshole nature. By the way, he was already married to this white woman before he blew up.
