ITA Bill. Her album is SO SO great. The only thing I’ve even considered listening to these days. So WHAT! she has/had drug problems; that doesn’t stop her from making great music. That doesn’t stop her from being EONS better than any of these chicks out today.

FYI: Chick has been out for 4 years. Her earlier stuff is what I call the “Pink Syndrome”. The label packaged her to make her into some bluesy pop princess & tried to refine her look and you could so TELL that wasn’t her. Like Pink, soon as she was able to make her own creative decisions she was able to shine at her fullest.

It doesn’t stop you guys from supporting your favorite rappers. It doesn’t stop you guys from supporting Whitney Houston. It didn’t stop you from supporting Rick James or James Brown. It didn’t stop you from supporting Diana Ross. Nor Mary J.

Stop using her race/ lifestyle as an excuse to why you don’t like her. Just admit you’re not ready to be open minded to different sounds. Close minded people like the herbs above are the reason music can’t evolve & we’re stuck in the same shit.

Also, she’s only 23/24. She has plenty of time to grow. She’s apparently had a rough life, so she writes/sings what she knows. If she’s lead a life of pain, you’re gonna hear the pain in her voice.

    Bill Said:

The Fact that she has Substance Abuse Issues makes her VERY “interesting”.

I hear heartache in her lyrics, I see the glaze in her eyes, and the pain in her voice.

People can’t help what Color they are, or what obstacles they are facing in life.

So WHAT……..She has a substance abuse problem.
    A lot of people do.

I admire & respect her for allowing herself to be used in such a way to convey HER story.

Maybe others with this “illness” can find hope & solace in her music

    * Your mind really has to be FREE in order to listen to “other” types of music

** You have to also realize that some a LOT of Caucasian People LOVE soul music, because they grew up listening to Soul Music

*** I really don’t think Amy Winehouse is trying to imitate or be like anyone. She Really has her own style.

***** I would really like to hear her sing a Jazz tune, e.g something by Billie Holliday.
She has the SOUL and the HEARTACHE to properly convey the emotions of a Billie Holliday Tune.

    ^^^good comment.

  4. new yorker

    i meant for complex

@49 actually they do. go on “superficial”. it’s a white site where they are constantly talking about how pale and ugly kirsten dunst is and how lohan is a fire crotch whose p**** probably stinks.

we need to stop looking at white people as if they do no wrong. they are just like us. you see all the black women that dye their hair blond? most white women do the same b/c blond hair is supposed to be rare yet almost every white woman you see is blond. go figure. they “fix” their noses too just like some black women do so stop acting like they are so different from us

  6. The best white soul artist right now is Nikka Costa.

  7. ComplexNDope

Thanks New Yorker. Also, I agree Bill. If people don’t start getting cultured, there’s never going to be anything new. And the new stuff is just going to be overshawdowed & unappreciated. But then again, I’m referring to the fools who worship the ground that BET walks on. (That craptacular channel).

Amy live blows a majority of the artists out today CLEAR out the water. I seen a performance of her, where she was clearly inebriated. Hell, she even stopped mid song, bent down, drank what appeared to be rum & coke…and STILL rocked it.

I dig her. Re: the comparisons. It’s not her fault she’s being compared to other artists. It’s hard to live in the shadows of those many call “legends”. But you musn’t forget. No Idea Is Original. You gain your inspiration from someone or somewhere. I bet your bottom dollar that when people’s so-called legends came out, they were gettin compared to those before them.

  8. ComplexNDope

I agree & Co Sign everything you have stated on this topic.

It’s important to recognize other people’s frustrations:
Black Americans sometimes get “frustrated” like my friend Chante (Post # 60), because it appears that if a White artist makes Soul Music (Blue Eyed Soul) that they immediatly “blow up”

    It IS very frustrating.

Did you know that Both Chaka Khan & Patti Labelle have been dropped by their recording labels ??

Black Females like Erica Badu, India Arie, Jill Scott, Jaguar Wright, Macy Gray, Heather Headly, Mica Paris, Joi (from Raphael Saadiq’s Group Lucy Pearl) & Cassandra Wilson are often ignored by mainstream radio…..

THAT’s Why Blacks become upset when White Artist like Amy Winehouse blows up.

    * NONE of those facts have anything to do necessarly with Amy Winehouse.
I’m sure Amy Winehouse (what a APPROPRIATE name for her !!) wasn’t sitting at home plotting to steal another Black Female Artist’s album sales !!

Amy Winehouse can’t help that she’s white.
Amy Winehouse can’t hhelp that she can sing.

She is simply using her God Given talent !!

I’m sure Amy Winehouse has no ulterior motive to steal Black Music sales…

  9. @ ComplexNDope, I get what you’re saying and I’ve never blamed her for that. My problem is they could be compared as in so and so being their influences, but to straight call them the “new Lauryn” or “new Aretha” is implying that they’re on their level and about to replace them. Usher has been influenced by MJ I don’t see anyone calling him the “new MJ” (and if someone ever did, at least Usher been in the game for 10 years) yet Rolling Stone crows Justin Timberlake the new “king of pop” after one album? That’s ridiculous. That’s all I’m saying.

Bill said what I couldn’t lol.

  11. Peach

Its unfortunate that EVERYTHING is made into a race issue and that a lot of people still havent grown up enough to just listen to music rather than ripping the artist apart. Hearing “oh well she has SOME black in her” is disapointing. We shouldnt be sitting here debating her race with her talent. The woman has a powerful voice and I LOVE IT. Whoever said we let Eminem become rich even though he is racist, is a clown. Someone also said that he was racist because he didnt date black women. Um…some black men dont date white women, and that doesnt make them racist. Its rediculous that the conversation even went down this path, because it should be about our opinion of Amy Winehouse’s talent. Not her race, not about white people vs. black people. Damn

  12. SUBVERT

I think people are putting too much weight on comparisons that have been made. I mean, it’s not like Amy is running around calling herself the new Lauryn. So lets juts put that debate to rest, it’s not the girls fault.

  13. afrobella

Bill, Peach, and ComplexNDope, thanks for talking some sense on this comments thread. And Brian, thanks for stepping outside of the mainstream box and sharing music that’s gritty and different. I appreciate it. Damn, when I wrote about Amy Winehouse, I didn’t get all of this hateration on my site… people just need to appreciate her for who she is (flaws and all) and quit making everything a race issue. If you REALLY want to support old school soul, go get a Bettye LaVette or Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings album.

  14. afrobella

ps: The Dap Kings also sing backup for La Winehouse. So if they’ve got her back, I’m convinced of her soul street cred.

    Bill Said:

Thank you Afrobella for EDUCATING me.
*I’ve never heard of the artist that you mentioned above, but if YOU like them, I will seek them out…

I’m going to do a google search now, to see if I can listen to their music.

    Thank YOU beloved !!!!

** By The Way, There is a Blog called “AfroBella”..Is that YOUR Blog ???

Hi Bill! Yes, that’s me! Pleasure to make your acquaintance, I always look forward to reading your comments here on The Loop. Thanks for your kind words about my site, it’s a labor of love. Angel La and this site really helped to inspire me to create my own thing. Thanks for the love!

it’s kind of a no win siutation for white artists like amy whinehouse and robin thicke. no white singer will ever have a voice like marvin gaye or aretha. period. but i think it’s a testament to the vitality and longevity of black music to have singers like amy and christina, both with 4 octave ranges, drawing on sarah vaughn, bb king, the ronettes. if you’re gonna do it, do it right and amy’s album is refreshing after hearing factory style muscic generated for the airways. think of any r&b singer and they’re pretty much the same. same choreography, same weaves, very similiar beats and sounds. amy reminds me of music of the 60′s and 70′s when artists COULD actually be artists and produce original sounding albums that weren’t disgarded after 2 months.

  20. Ms. G

Back to Black is my song!! It describes how much pain she was in when her lover left her.

I have never compared her to Lauryn Hill and don’t intend to cos they are completely different. This race issue that some of U keep bringing up as an excuse to hate her music is just a load of shite.

All I can say is Amy Winehouse is a brilliant artist and I much prefer listening to REAL music rather than the over-produced bollocks released by people who can’t sing for toffee and use vocoders to disguise just how BAD their voice is *cough, Cassie, cough*, or the type by those who overdo the vocal gymnastics.

Seriously, I enjoy perusing your website !!!

I’m not a woman, but I feel that If I’m living with women (the wife & kids) it probably would be a good ideal for me to understand THEIR needs…..

Your website gives me INSIGHT into the thought process of a BLACK WOMAN as she prepares to beautify herself.

Thank You for Sharing, and for allowing us mere mortals (the BLACK MEN) the opportunity to receive the VERY VALUABLE Rhema that you are pouring out..

    Much Love & Respect

Musical Genuises are Prince, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Queen, Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five……not Lauryn Hill.
I loved her music ( when she was a sane sista) and I think she was an outstanding artist, but not a GENUIS. Music genuises are innovators that take you to another level in music. There are others beyond the ones I mentioned, but I wanted to give examples.

    Now on to Amy Winehouse…..
I love her sound and her music. I think she is a good artist and I am so glad to see more “real” singers again beyond the pop fluff of Beyonce, Justin and Nelly Furtado. She does not in the least bit remind me of Lauryn Hill. They sound totally different and their messages are not even the same. I think people just love to compare.

I really waiting on that new Jill Scott…now she is the truth!

  23. # 66 I still bump “Like A Feather” and “Everybody’s Got Their Something” in my iPod! :)

Amy’s music is pretty cool, problems and all.

  24. lilmissunshine

im tryin to tell everybody in my crew that the UK have great music but non of them want to listen check out Mutya Buena’s song suffer 4 luv.

  25. Krystin

Nice video! Caught my undivided attention FINALLY! But why do i keep seeing people write about her sounding like Lauryn Hill .. i see no comaprison in the voices at all. The song has this um 60′s feel to it.

  26. yyeahisaidit

….did some people ever stop to think that to bring lauren hill and aretha comparisons to amy winehouse and joss stone are done so as compliments to the artistry and brillance of lauren and aretha? why else would lauren be featured on joss’ new cd? (and i’m 100% certain she didn’t have to fuck her for lauren to be on the track, lol) plus both ms. hill and ms. franklin have sold tons of records to all kinds of people across color lines and have influenced them all greatly and these new singers are only futher evidence of that legacy and of how incredible lauren and aretha are to touch ALL people with their talents…which by the way will never be replaced…call me crazy but i can get with amy, joss, lily allen, aretha, lauren etc., that’s the power of music…and believe me music brings more of all types of people together than any of these tired and played out racial politics ever seem to…WHAT? WHAT?

  27. missy

    i think she sucks :-/

  28. iana

perhaps people shouldn’t make comparisons between artists… i love both lauryn and amy’s music but their distinctive styles are very different from each others…

  29. SPRINGHILL

I KNEW THAT IT WAS GOING TO BE HER HEART THAT THEY WERE BURYING, CAUSE THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS FEELING WHILE LISTENING TO THE SONG. THIS GIRL IS FIRE, TRULY REFRESHING TO LISTEN TO. ANGELA GOOD LOOKING ON THE MORE ALTERNATIVE ARTIST THAT YOU SHOWCASE. AS A WOMAN OF COLOR I LIKE MORE ALTERNATIVE AND MUSIC THAT IS A LITTLE OUT OF THE BOX. THANKS

  30. halcyonc

LOVE this chic. I have the CD and I play it at work at least once a day. My favorite tune is “Love is a Losing Game”.

  31. Tight Video! I’m Diggin her But I thought she was Prettier!!! not feelin her hair

  32. LucyLa

If you haven’t gotten the album I suggest you run out and get it. From beginning to end its the shit. Right now she is the only chic putting out quality music, everyone else just wants to get up and shake their ass for the camera. She also has this song “Me & Mr. Jones” which I love. I promise that you will love the entire album. I got it on iTunes for $8 so you cant beat that.

  33. jekia

Its funny……..race is always the topic at hand pertaining to anything black people talk about. I can tell you one thing Amy Winehouse is very talented. I am happy to hear that she listens to old r&b and soul and not the ridiculous shit that is put on BET. No offense I’m getting tired of seeing black videos with half naked women and singers or rappers drinking expensive champagne. Hardly ever showcasing the song of the video. She stated that she grew up listening to talented singers like Dinah Washington,Ella Fitzgerald and Billi Holiday whos song “strange fruit” by the way was written by a white Jewish man. How many young blacks today listen to the greats that paved the way for Beyonce, Ciara, Jay-z etc? Or even grew up on real jazz music. I meet more white people who even know who Robert Johnson is than black people. Its ridiculous! So for those who think that Ms. Winehouse should’nt be singing soul music or be recognized for singing soul music at least she has more respect for the greats than most black Americans.

Oh and by the way Chante……….Norah Jones’s mother is caucasion and her father is Indian jazz musician Ravi Shankar.
