ANIKA NONI ROSE TO VOICE ‘THE FROG PRINCESS’

frog_anika.jpg
“Dreamgirls,” star Anika Noni Rose has been chosen to make Disney history as the voice of the movie studio’s first black princess. The actress/singer beat the likes of Oscar-winning Dreamgirls co-star Jennifer Hudson, Alicia Keys and Tyra Banks, who all reportedly auditioned for the role. I’m really happy for her because she hasn’t been getting her fair shine since Dreamgirls was released. Go ‘ head girl!!

  1. The One

I’m happy for her because I declare it seems like she wasn’t even in Dream Girls.

  2. CONGRATS…..SHE BEAT OUT SOME STRONG WOMEN ALL WORTH OF THE JOB BUT I’M HAPPY SHE GOT IT

  3. She beat out some big stars for this part and I’m so happy for her. FINALLY Disney gives props to black people and I’m glad they picked her for this.

  4. GOOD!!! Considering that they treated her like a BALD-HEADED STEPCHILD with DREAMGIRLS! She was one of the BEST performances in that MOVIE and you hardly EVER seen her at any of the AWARD SHOWS and EVENTS. She deserved just as much PRAISE for that MOVIE as anyone else. So SHE BETTER WORK this next role. Get em Girl!

  5. NoMSoul

Im glad she got the part. She’d be best for. J-Hud’s vooice is too deep. Tyra is too (i think u already know). And A.Keys got that toughneess in her voice. But Anika was a BROADWAY ACTRESS so she knows a thing or two about performing.

PLUS, she can SING to the singing parts of the film. Her Acting was WAY better than Beyonce’s in Dream Girls, and yet, no one acknowledged her for anything. it was like she didnt even exist. So im glad she’s finally getting the chance to shine.

  6. CHA CHA SLIDE

I havnt seen DG but I saw a clip of her in the movie and it was very entertaining.

She made me actually want to see the movie.

Which should be out on dvd, i think in May.

that’s very ironic being that she wasnt showcased much in all of the DG hype and publicity. She has spunk because she held it down at the Oscars next to Jennifer Hudson and Beyonce. She’s a star in her own right.

    I will be following her.

She kinda reminds me of Kimberly Elise(?) from (Set It Off)

Well, good for her. Now on to this “black princess” movie. Shame it took Disney this long for it, its supposed to be set in New Orleans, and word is she falls in love with a European prince…I knew they was to good to be true. N E Way, the princess name is Maddie, and though I am excited for this movie to help with little black girls self esteem as small children, I think they are throwing us a bone. if i had the monetary funds to do so, i would have done it myself, too bad we had to wait on white folks….congrats anika

  8. RC

I agree w/5 she’s perfect for the role. Jennifer’s voice is too deep, Tyra’s too crazy, and I wonder if Alicia can even shake her NY accent. Its also a plus that Disney won’t have to hire someone else for singing. Nika’s a good choice but I am still skeptical about the movie. Hopefully this is one step towards the right direction.

  9. sOhOLLYWOOD

    COOL . . . sOhOLLYWOOD . . .

  10. GO ANIKA NONI ROSE! Finally, little black girls can see themselves on the big screen in a Disney movie.

  11. taji

Walt Disney the bigot!! Did anyone of you ever hear of the “Song of South” made in 1946 but I believe was never released in the United States. It is a depiction of Black people as inferior and a poor representation of Black plantation workers to say the least. It has been locked in the Disney archives and its 60th anniversary was last year but there was not much mention of it. A Disney representative stated that they are thinking of releasing the video. I first heard about this some years ago but maybe the issue may resurface as their is a petition for Disney executives to release the video.

im happy for anika noni ross, personally she was way better than jhud in dreamgirls(in the acting scenes),but why does the black princess look busted, i mean they could made her more prettier and appealing everybody.sorry blackwomen do not look like that.

  13. SassyTeri

Go Anika! I am so happy for her. She’s finally getting the recognition she deserves. She was wonderful in DG and it was very unfair how they treated her. Now she’s gettin’ hers.

  14. David

    I LOVE this woman.

Beautiful and classy. She deserves everything she recieves!

  21. K.K.

yay anika. Can you imagine Alicia Keys’s voice on a disney movie? Deep as hell right? Her voice is too sexy for that kinda stuff after seein smokin aces yesterday which she was very pretty in may i add…

  22. YAY!!!! Congrats to Anika!!! She is well deserving of this role. It suits her, with her Broadway and other theather credits. Plus she is a TRAINED vocalist.

I am so elated that Disney has FINALLY created a black princess! I will be going to see The Frog Princess whenever it comes out!

  23. Chocolate_fiyah

More like it’s about time we got a princess… Well, we did have Sarabi and Nala from the Lion King… They were in Africa… But too bad only one of them was actually black… LOL!

A.N. Rose should really get her due now. Congrats

  24. DangerousKurvz

I second #5′s comments. She is the perfect choice to play this character. She’s classy, humble, and beautiful inside and out. She beat out some talented sistas, but I think she was the best choice overall. I hope she will start receiving the credit that she most definitely deserves. Go on sista girl, go on!! ;o)

  25. The first shall be last, the last first!

  26. ELA

that princess reminds me of brandy… dont know why…

  27. THAT’S GOOD IM HAPPY FOR HER.SHE DESERVES IT.

  28. LashoNDA

this is an important role so i’m glad they chose a truly talented actress. Actress being the operative word. These models/singers/wannabe actresses betta stay the phuck out. Y’all know Tyra would have been HELLA annoying. She would either have done her fake white preppy woman accent or she would have done her fake ghetto Bunifa accent. GO ANIKAAA!!!!!!!!

  29. LashoNDA

@ 28. Y’all know if Brandy hadn’t killed a bitch she would be doing this role. But its all good cos she’s focussing on her new album rite now and she don’t need to be combining that with acting. We all know what happens when Brandy tries to switch lanes………

  30. Blkenese

Yeaaaaa for her! Big tings a gwon on!!!

  31. mai03

Brandy was already Cinderella, so she probally wasn’t considered for that reason. I’m happy for Anika, she is a true talent. I thought for sure Alicia was going to get it, but I’m happy for Anika. I heard them Disney checks are phat! Go get that money girl!

  32. Shootingstar

    Go, Anika!

On another note, its about damn time Disney produced an animated flick with a black lead. Disney has stalled and done everything it could not to have to feature an actual black person in its animated films; ie Lion King.

    Its about damn time!

  33. DivaB

Good for her! She getting more work out here.. She’s talented!

  34. BAM BAM

    @ #12

Actually, Song of the South was released quite a few times in America…..my uncle took me to see it when I was a young aspiring movie nerd.

Good for Anika. I can see her career rising from the east like the sun.

  35. kay

im soo soo happy for Anika!!! you go girl, she deserves it cause she has an amazing voice and even looks like Maddy, and shes sooo talented

  36. pretteyeyez

    CONGRATS ANIKA!!!!

  37. Asentha

    Good for her!!!!!! Congrats!!!

  38. natural mystic

good for Anika, but why can’t they just use some new talent. Why is it always a celebrity, even just for a voice role?

  39. My girl Anika!! Getting her shine!!

  40. Good for her.

I didn’t want Alicia for the role because the princess is a southern girl and I don’t think she could put off the accent.

I think Anika was a great choice; I never thought of her to do it.

  41. #30,

Heaven help us if Tyra had gotten that role. I probably would not go see it for that reason.

  42. THE CL CHAT!!

it’s great that she got this, she didn’t get shine from Dreamgirls so she gets to mark history in another way congrats to her

  43. jessicaspears

LOL at tyra’s “ghetto fab” voice, and yall know her coonin ass would have made maddie a joke. I just wish this movie was set in Africa so kids could get a taste of african royalty and empires. Too many kids (and adults) think that Africa’s history started when we were brought to america as slaves, I thought it would have been great for disney to erase that thought. I mean they could have done the classic “Ada” story which it brazilliant and also displays Africa at a time when we were on top of the world.

Oh and those worried about maddie’s appearence, trust me she will not look like that by 2009. Its just a concept art, if you would have seen the lil mermaid in her concept art you would have thought she was busted too. Im sure they will white wash maddie to oblivion so that she is presentable to her WHITE prince by the time it hits the screens *rolls eyes* I would expect to see light bright skin, a small lil kim pixie nose, green to hazel eyes, and long golden yaky….um I mean “good hair”.

  44. babyboss

even the frog princess is pretty. she perfect for the role!

  45. DAMN DO I HAVE ANY SENSE?? I THOUGHT IT WAS THE GIRL FROM AKLEEH AND THE BEE(DID I SPELL THAT RIGHT??)

OH WELL BUT IM HAPPY FOR ANIKA SHE WAS JUST WAS GOOD AS BEYONCE & JAMIE FOX IN DREAMGIRLS AND DIDNT GET THE RECOGNITION SHE DESERVED, SO IM HAPPY FOR HER

  46. BAM BAM

    @#41 NATURAL MYSTIC

From a marketing standpoint, Hollywood bosses feel it’s smarter to go with a bankable (READ: recognizable) actors when it comes to animation
voice-overs. Especially for big budget features.

  47. CARAMEL 2

Good for her. Wish her all the best. Glad to see sisters doing things big in a postive light.

  48. BAM BAM

    @ BASHYBOO

I could have gone with that casting choice too.

  49. KI KI

I’M HAPPY FOR ANIKA SHE TULY DESERVES THIS SHE WAS MY FAVORITE DG.

  50. Rochelle

Good for her, she deserves it. I can’t wait for this film to come out, I love Disney films.

  51. I AM HAPPY FOR ANIKA SHE WAS PRETTY GOOD IN DREAMGIRLS.I JUST DO NOT LIKE THE NAME OF THE PRINCESS BUT HAY WE CANNOT HAVE IT ALL.

  52. She was the cheapest

On nother note couldnt they have made the princess a little more pretty…compared to Cinderella, Jasmine, Snow White, Ariel….the Frog Princess look kinda fucked up…the nappy ponytail and all

And why does the princess the movie look like its gonna be in technicolor? judging by the pic

  53. Moni in Cali

I happy for her. She can really sang. It’s about damn time Disney had a Black cartoon. The damn Lion King does not count.

  54. kmniles

    #54…

So what you’re saying you want the Princess to look…what…more WHITE? Your statement remids me of Liz Taylor all tanned up trying to play Cleopatra or more recently, Angelina Jolie playing a black woman in her own biopic.

She looks just fine, hair and all.

  55. kenyanpebbles

    so happy for her

  56. jayla06

Why is the damn princess named “Mattie”? I hate that name!!! It’s too plantation/slavery sounding!! Congrats Anika!! You really deserve it!!

  57. Krystin

lol @ #4 thats funny .. but anyway im glad for her she deserves this part. I felt so bad for her during the whole DreamGirls premiere. At the awards when they interviewed Hudson they just ignored Anika..

  58. Krystin

@ 12 yes i have and I think it was on DVD im not sre but there was a movie with a black slave who tells stories to these two white kids … they wanted to put it on DVD but there wer ppl against it
