Just saw this list last night, and I agree that Debbie Allen and Fatima were glaring omissions, and so is my idol, Frankie Manning. Most people don’t know who Frankie is, but he is one the original swing dancers from the 30’s in Harlem and practically invented the dance! He was a technical (dance) advisor for Spike Lee’s Malcolm X. Go to YouTube and check him out in Hellzapoppin’! This is such an un-educated list. Where are Josephine Baker, Bill Robinson, and Frankie Manning? What about Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers? William Henry Lane? Williams and Walker? These are the dancers who paved the way for superstars like James Brown to make such a lasting impression.

There are a lot of people out raged by this list, I read a few of the 500 some comments, just to see where people’s head are. I think they are OK with the exception of The comments about BET being cancelled. They obviously do not know what BET means to us, what we had to survive to get it and it’s overall value. As for me I love you BET keep striving. I sincerely hope you read this. I do feel that thelist itself is controversial. The fact that it is labeled the 25 greatest of all time and there is no Bojangles or Paula I believe we as a people should make a public apology to these two or give an explanation as to why. I know I’m extremely late, but here are my thoughts…

*BET is a general embarrassment, so it’s not surprise they can’t execute simple tasks reasonably. I don’t watch the station but I did see this list around the internet and, sadly, I’m not surprised.

If they were going to do a show about the Top Dancers, there was really no reason to make it a “countdown”. This isn’t 106th & Park and it’s not necessary to rank great dancers. Simply have a show discussing and showing footage of them all in no particular order. Simple. But, of course, they chose the idiotic way.

*Secondly, I cannot fathom why someone would compile a list of “All-Time” great dancers by using both current popular artists and certified legends/pioneers in the field. The entire concept is ridiculous, IMO. Katherine Dunham (not even on the list), Debbie Allen, Alvin Ailey, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, The Nicholas Brothers, etc are all legends who DEFINED the field. They made dancing, as we know it, into what it is today. Why on earth would you create a list with them alongside, or replaced by, people whose videos are #1 on current countdowns? They didn’t have parameters for the list… it didn’t matter when they lived, what they accomplished, what their race is or what type of dancing they did. That invites controversy, just throwing folks on one list.

ALL BET had to do was List “Top Video Dancers” (eliminating the need to call it “all-time”) which would merely include folks who’ve been in videos or on TV in the last couple of decades. Then, you could easily discuss each person and how they were influenced by the real legends of the past. For instance, Michael Jackson (#1 IMO) as influenced by James Brown, the Nicholas Brothers and Jackie Wilson. Chris Brown, Usher and Omarion (who is a better dancer than C and U, IMO) would in turn be heavily influenced by Michael. You can talk about Janet and Aaliyah, but then cut to a short discussion on how Katherine Dunham changed the game. There’s no logic at all that they are all on the same list. Being ranked. With a straight face.

*Third, they missed people. Going by “Best Video Dancers”, how could BET not include Ginuwine, who outdances Omarion, Chris and Usher? Do they not remember the dance break on “So Anxious”? How did they forget Mya? She’s a TRAINED dancer. She can mimic Janet as well as tap dance, among other things. She won a video nomination for “My Love is Like Wo”. How did they forget Adolfo “Shabba-Doo” Quinones and Michael “Bugaloo Shrimp” Chambers, better known as Ozone and Turbo? Did they not see “Breakin”? Do I need to direct their attention to Chambers’ scene with the broom?

Also, why are there people on that list that don’t really appear on BET? If I’m not mistaken, Shakira is not really a BET artist. If they were going to do that, they might as well have listed a lot of nonBlack people… like Fred Astaire, P!nk and Maya Plisetskaya or somebody.

In conclusion, BET sucks.

*Since people asked, Rosie Perez can be seen dancing during the opening credits of “Do the Right Thing”. Very aggressive in a very well-known scene.

Oh, one more thing: I don’t understand the logic of ranking James Brown first just because MJ idolized him. So what? The student surpassed the teacher, in this instance. Why not put the #1 as whoever influenced James? It’s kind of ridiculous. Someone is always going to be influenced by a predecessor, but overall talent shouldn’t be based on who was first chronologically.

I mean, James was a great performer and dancer, but Michael is the best. I think it was more so based on the fact James had died not too long before this aired. Under normal circumstances, everyone knows who #1 is. “He made Thriller. Thriller!”

Big Daddy Kane? Its Scoob and scrap that needs to be honord for the dancing. Kane was the performer. For those that don’t know hip hop to its fullest (including the crap of the list order that BET put top 25 in) needs to know that Scoob and Scrap laid the foundation for modern hip hop dance.

What do you mean “I don’t understand why Chris Brown is above Janet Jackson and Usher”. Have you seen that kid dance? Janet Jackson can’t EVER do what he can do, and Usher can’t even clean Chris’ dance shoes. He can do everything Usher can and then some more. You can’t say that about Usher but I couldn’t see him krumping to save his life. I don’t even know why you included Janet Jackson’s name, what has she done or can she do that Chris can’t do or already topped? Nothing thats what. I know that Usher and Janet have been around alot longer but that doesn’t automatically make them better dancers than Chris Brown. Chris may be young but he makes his elder dancers obsolete and he gets better and better everyday. In my opinion hes already better than Usher, so by the time he gets to Usher’s age there won’t even be a need to compare the two. He would only be comparable to his former self.
