I CALL BULL-SH*T! (EDITED @ 5:26pm)

Kiri Davis
Ok, I know yall remember the Kiri Davis post I made earlier this week asking everyone to vote for the talented director. She was a finalist in the CosmoGIRL! and Take Action Hollywood film contest for her brilliant documentary, “A Girl Like Me.” (see related posts) Well I go to vote for her today and I get this interesting message from the CosmoGirl site:

We have determined that the online voting has been corrupted as a result of one or more instances of tampering with the voting process by users. As a result, none of the online votes will be counted, and we will submit all three of the semi-finalists to our panel of experts for final judging and selection of a winner. The winner will be featured in the August 2007 issue of CosmoGIRL!

Something doesn’t seem right about this. Tampering with the voting process? You could only vote once per day, how could someone tamper with it? Kiri was in third place and when people from Afrobella and Concreteloop started to give her support, she entered first place. But now the voting is closed? I don’t know about you, but I call bull-shit!

Patrice (afrobella.com) posted a good video, where Kiri talks about her documentary, click on the image above to view it.

EDIT: 3:18PM

I still haven’t heard anything from Cosmo Girl or Hearst Publications, but I wanted to let you know that Jeff Bercovici of Radar Magazine did a little write up on this whole issue. You can check it out here. Keep sending those emails in!!

EDIT: 5:26PM

No one from CosmoGirl responded to my email or contacted me via the phone. But they did respond to Radar Magazine, saying:

A spokeswoman offered this statement to Radar, “It is disappointing that people are jumping to conclusions and making false accusations before the winner has been determined. The Cosmogirl Take Action Hollywood Film Contest online voting was eliminated because it had been compromised by online voters. As has always been the case, the final winner will be chosen by a panel of celebrity judges. The films from the three semi-finalists are all incredible works of art and we know that the judges have a tough decision to make. The winner will be featured in the August 2007 issue of Cosmogirl.”

Still no details on how the “online voting was compromised” but I’m on it. Susan Schulz still hasn’t responded to my emails or calls.

  4. That’s some crazy mess right there.

  5. Hell yeah thats some straight up bull f&%%ing sh**. I was so happy when I saw her first place now because she was probably in first place, the voting is “corrupted”. Pissing me the hell off. Im going to be so livid if she dont win first prize. They mad because the two stupid ass videos made by the other white girls is falling behind. Im officially heated.

    Love,Peace,&&Honeyy

  6. And who can tamper with the results? CosmoGirl, tell the truth!

  7. Ms. T.

WHERE’S AL SHARPTON WHEN YOU NEED HIM?!

  8. =Qua=

The original was a real eye-opener to many of us, who didn’t realize how brainwashed we are as far as beauty and perception of good and bad.

    Damn.. that ain’t right.

  11. SPEAK_ON_IT

Yeah Angel La thats some bullshit! How can u tamper with online voting?!

Their just shocked and upset that she was in 1st place!

  12. HELL NAW!!!!

Can’t stand to see a sista doing good. Her clip was the most enlightening anyway. We sick of hearing white girl’s sob story. Let a sista get out her story too…damn.

She better win too cause if she don’t I’m starting a revolt up at Cosmogirl.

  13. redvelvet1

This is total B.S.! The only reason they decided to stop the on-line voting process is because they noticed that Kiri went from last place to first place in a 24hr period! They automatically assumed that there had to be some sort of tampering taking place because how on earth can a little black documentary go from last to first so quickly, it has to be fixed or we must have found some way to cheat! They are so full of crap!

One thing we should take from this is that we as people truley do have the power to bring about change when we come together and support eachother!!!

  14. UM

    HERE IS THE NUMBER: 217-649-3852
    SUPPORT A SISTAH!

  15. dior1006

I’m in Chicago, so i can call Jesse J. up and it will be on and popping at Cosmo headquarters, you know what I’m saying?!?

it is so very obvious that whitey does not like us supporting eachother, especially when we are doing something positive. Somebody snitched, nothing but a hater.

They just mad that Imus got fired. LOL

  16. kaykay

whatever racism shows it’s ugly head again i can’t get caught up in the madness or i would be a angry violent crazy person.

  17. CARAMEL 2

That is a crying shame. They tampered with the votes. Folks are just trifling…

  18. hood_shit

    That’s foul yo!

  19. Sharonda

I would love to really hear why they stop the voting process because I voted every days since.

  20. 12. Exactly

Just like the Don Imus situation. Did you see how quick those companies removed themselves from him? Shows you how powerful the Black dollar is too!

So when you find something about these products you consume whether it be the price or quality of it, we need to speak up!

  21. Candance

Yeah, corrupt because the sistah was winning, lol! Typical bull shit if I never, ever heard.

Even, if she doesn’t win she is a winner to me. The hell with Cosmo Girl period. Secondly, let’s do better then that and boycott that damn magazine. Hit them where it hurts and that’s in the pocket baby. Tell them if she can’t be in her rightful place in a matter of minutes we can have an on-line petition to boycott their asses.

Don’t be afraid people to take your money from these racist heffa either, because this girl won’t be hurt at all by this if she doesn’t win their contest. She has a bright future ahead of her.

It’s time for us to show these people. MS bus boycott bankrupt that bus company within a matter of days I believe. I’m calling this in memory of Rosa Parks. I’m so tired of these racist man, they make me sick.

    Candance

  22. whaddup Doe

WOW That is so deep. especially as this comes at a time when the whole Imus thing has had such a huge IMPACT. PEOPLE PLEASE BE AWARE THAT OUR VOICES ARE BEING HEARD AND IN A LARGE PROFOUND WAY! WE MUST CALL / PROTEST AND URGE COSMO TO DO THE RIGHT THING. WE WILL NOT TOLERATE PEOPLE SLANDERING OUR WOMEN, SLANDERING OUR CULTURE AND WE WILL FOCUS ON THE BRAINWASHING OF OUR YOUTH AND OUR KIDS AND ULTIMATELY OUR FUTURE. WE MUST ALSO HOLD ON THE SAME LEVEL THE RAPPERS ENTERTAINERS AND ANY WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY WHO MAKE REMARKS ABOUT OUR WOMEN IN A DEROGATORY WAY.

YEAH YEAH YEAH I HEAR THE WHOLE FREEDOM OF SPEECH AND ARTISTIC EXPRESSION ARGUEMENT LOUD AND CLEAR, BUT THERE IS ONLY SO MUCH BOOTY SHAKING TITS AND ASS ACTION OUR YOUNG PEOPLE NEED TO SEE. ARE “NAPPY HEADED HO’S” NO MATTER IF FROM THE BOWELS OF THE GHETTO TO THE UPPER EAST SIDE ARE: NATURAL HEADED BEAUTIFUL BALCK WOMEN. KINKY HAIR NATURAL HAIR DIFERENT SHADES HUES SIZES REPRESENT LIFE BIRTH CULTURE STRENGTH AND BEAUTY!!!!!!!!!!

(sorry I went of but this pissed me off beyond believe) one love CL for not just being “our” entertanment destination but doing what the hip hop culture started out doing, informing, educating and entertaing.

  23. You see, when you try to look at the good side of things, this proves that we have MUCH MORE POWER than we think. Nothing is gonna stop that girl, I believe she’s gonna make even bigger things. As for this, it is far from being over, I’m gonna tell them b*tches how I feel about their bullsh*t!

Speaking of power, use that same power to request artists like Common on radios, tv and magazines. Common’s next album “Finding Forever” in stores July 10th, first single titled “The People”. Request it everywhere when it comes out, we did it with Lauryn’s Miseducation we can do it with him!! Don’t underestimate YOUR power!

  24. FloridaBoy8703

I smell a rat for sure. The voting process was not corrupted. It was merely a case of black people becoming aware of a young sistah and as a result throwing tons of votes at her lol.

ok everbody on three scream DON IMUS!!!!!!

WE TAKING OVER ONE SEAT AT A TIME!!!!

    Band Together!

  25. star

that is foul,i’m not reading or supporting that mag.

  26. ThinkAboutIt

It’s time to get at them on this one… this is blatant – and the corruption is all theirs. First they notified her and her mother 2 days AFTER they notified the other two finalists, and now when the sister started to get her supporters lined up and take first place they claim corruption?

As usual, we start behind in the race, and when we still beat them, they change the rules again.

  27. BabyP

Online hanging chads???? You’ve got to be be fuggin with me right?

  28. JUDAH

Young lady is very talented. Very talented. Hopefully she won’t get corrupted by the Oprah’s and all the other self-hating, rich, down low black lesbians that will tell her to “open her mind”. Lol. Good luck to the sister.

  29. chris' wife

well that shit right der do sound like a HOT ass lie…how the hell can u corrupt some online votes? ONLINE votes i say…lol white people sure don’t want no black people to succeed at all!

  30. Hell yeah this is some bullsh*t. Anything and I mean anything to keep the blk ppl down.

How can there be tampering. They give us the credit for tampering (in so many words) then they take away the message!

    WTF is really going on.

Oh CosmoGirl will be receiving a nice lil “HELLUR” from me!

  31. ms_mac

Well here’s my 2 cents on what I think went down:

We get the word that this brilliant young lady has enetered a contest.

The word spreads throughout the black blogging community (please believe that there was no other way I or at least 95% of the CL peeps would have heard about this contest since we don’t go on cosmogirl.com. Can I get an amen?)

People get excited about the possibility of her winning and start voting.

YT learns that people on blogs like CL are so excited for her that they are actually start searching these blogs to see what the bloggers are saying.

They read where bloggers are saying, “I’m voting for her as many times as I can!” and “I voted for her five times today!”

YT is like, “Hell no. Voting multiple times is corrupting the process and if they keep this up she’ll win.”

YT issues a statement that the voting process has been “corrupted” and all on-line voting must cease and desist.

What other explanantion could there be?

  32. kenyanpebbles

BLACK POWER! black is beauty and her video showed us exactly that we can be beautiful with our own african features, light or dark to kinky hair. that’s the way God made us show IMUS and those other loosers that we are nappy headed beautiful people. iight.
getting carried away but it’s just that this white kid in my class was saying that why do we fire imus but not ludacris for calling people nappy headed hoes, then he said nappy headed hoes again and started laughing, i was about to curse him out, and to think this yt is a guy i chill with, anywhoo…this race thing is just annoying.

  33. shannon75

Cosmogirl caters more to the caucasian teen girls so I am not at all surprised. They cannot have a black teen win to easily-you know we have to work 100x’s harder for the same recognition that others recieve at a whim. Some non-black people argue why there are networks like BET and not a WET (white entertainment television) and if there was it would be considered a racist network. This example right here is why black people have to create their own media outlets whether it be magazines, television and movies because if we keep waiting around for “white america” to validate us, we will be waiting forever.

I say we need a teen magazine that caters to teens of color. And no, I’m not talking about another music review or hip hop mag-we got plenty of those.

P.S. What makes them the “experts” on anything anyways?

  34. They think that black people are stupid and poor…
    YTs better recognize!!

  35. johnosahon

i just e-mailed this to susan

    “hello,

i hate pulling the race card, but you guys are asking for it. can you please give me a solid explanation as to why voting was cancelled exactly when Kiri Davis started leading the votes for the Cosmogirl contest?

i need an answer immediately, this is insulting. it is a voting competition. this is beginning to look like florida 2000 and you guys are looking more like katherine harris, hopefully you would get yout faces PULLED like hers.

    thanks for your time.”

  36. #7-Would you get out my brain lol! I was about to say the same thing but you beat me to the punch. Kudos for you!

  37. redvelvet1

Ms_Mac you betta PREACH girl!!! That is exactly what happened! I believe whole heartedly that is what happened. They know that they don’t have many black readers and when this girl went from last to first so quickly they had to investigate to see how on earth it could have happened!

That is so sad because now I don’t think that she will have a fair shot. You know that there probably is not one black person let alone a black woman on that so-called “panel of experts”! The voting process was not fixed before but it certainly will be now, because they have made sure of that!

  38. redvelvet1

^^They are the one’s fixing it!!!

  39. I think everything happens for a reason. I’m not saying that it’s over because we must protest, we must ALL contact them and tell them how we feel, and let them know that we will EXPOSE THEIR FUCKERY everywhere we can. CONTACT THEM PEOPLE!!!!!! LET THEM KNOW THE BULLSHIT WILL BE EXPOSED!!!

CONCRETELOOP COULD YOU POSSIBLY FIND A WAY TO INTERVIEW THE GIRL?????????????

But everything happens for a reason.

Look what we’ve learned from this :

    1. We have power, and our voice can be heard.

    2. It bothers “THE MAN” obviously. And anything that bothers the means that it CAN HAVE A SERIOUS IMPACT.

    3. AGAAAAAAAIN : LAURYN HILL SOLD OVER 20 MILLIONS OFF OF A MOVEMENT WE STARTED. THE FUGEES MADE IT WORLDWIDE, IT WAS BECAUSE WE STARTED REQUESTING THEM FIRST. COMMON “FINDING FOREVER” IN STORES JULY 10th. START THE MOVEMENT, SHUT THE GANGSTA RAP GAME DOWN BY REQUESTING HIM. Yeah I’m a hardcore fan, and I’m bugging, but if we want to keep hip hop alive and with SOUL and MEANING, if we want to keep it revolutionary as it should have stayed we can do this. Black BLOGS HELP THIS CAUSE, START THE MOVEMENT, YO CONCRETELOOP PLEASE INTERVIEW COMMON!!!

What I wrote to Susan at Cosmo:

So now my vote doesn’t count? I am emailing in regard to Kiri Davis…It is such a disappointment that I, as a subscriber to Cosmopolitan Magazine, and not a teenage girl who is unaware of her economic power, have to pull my subscription to your publication because of what seems to be a biased and unfair practice. Unfortunately these days, economic repercussion seems to be the only means of communication that is regarded with some validity. I work in private industry and can tell you that from the perspective of marketing personnel, tampering with the voting process in regards to this film and it’s supporters reeks badly in the eyes of those would be supporters of your ideals and product.Because an African American filmmaker gained visibility and support of her own volition, somehow the voting has been tampered with? Shame on you. How dare you exercise this type of injustice on a people that you claim to respect and admire. How can you expect your readers to take your “change the world, one person at a time” stories seriously when you have obviously fallen victim to the same syndrome that has kept mankind trapped in the mire of discriminatory practice since it’s inception?I expect more of you and I will let you know that you are accountable for your actions by not contributing to the success of a publication that in fact does not recognize the voting rights of African Americans–even on something that may seem as insignificant to you as a documentary by a Black teenage girl on the standards of beauty accepted and promoted by our so called “liberal” society! You may want to talk to the marketing “professional”that decided this was the proper thing to do.That person id hindering the success of your organization by effectively alienating one of your core audiences and the sector of the population that contributes to the success of your advertisers.I am deeply saddened by this, but, not to the point of apathy.First Imus, in his blatant disrespect insults our girls, and now you, in a covert manner(which is far more dangerous)insult the intelligence of our people.(in a sarcastic tone)—Truly cosmopolitan!

Kiri—Every dream worth having is worth fighting for and coming up against opposition (even when it looms large) makes the realization of that dream all the sweeter.

  41. Aisha

You saw the injustice of that too i see. She was up by 515 the other day and now all of a sudden the day before they tally the votes or look at the results, it’s been “corrupted” I already sent 2 emails but I will send more.

  42. Natural Mystic

Again, like the Don Anus ordeal this is nothing shocking.

F^ck Cosmo Girl. This young lady is gonna make it bigger than that anyway!

  43. Ayoka

Thanks,Chante. Black people need to start realizing that our money is just as green as the next persons. That’s how you get the attention of corporate America. After all, the bottom line is what drives these people.

  44. WHAT? I DONT EVEN KNOW WHO THE BROAD IS AND IM CONTACTING COSMO, I SMELL A RAT…

  45. Aisha

If it hasn’t already been started, I’m going to start an online petition. In all the groups I’m in there over 800 or more that I sent the link to the contest too and I know over 75% of them voted and sent the link to groups that they’re in as well.

  46. xxxxxxxxx

WHEN I TRIED TO GO AND VOTE I COULD NOT FIND ANY OF THE LINKS TO VOTE…

  47. Marsha

    COSMOGIRL!=GOOD-OLE-GIRLS!-CLUB……..

  50. trinq

Again, the African American girl went from third place to first and that is definitely a problem. I think we should countinue to support other minorities in any way. We are still pulling for yo KIRI, GOD BLESS.

  51. Ms. S

I SECOND THE CALL OF B.S.!!!!!! BABY GIRL DID HER THING!!!!!!!!

  52. BronzeTrinity

I haven’t gotten a response from them yet. I’m going to stick with this but I will be away from the computer for most of the day. If anyone wants please send this email to them and try to get a response. I’ll come back and tell you what they say as soon as I hear from them. All of your efforts and cooperation were so amazing this can’t just go to waste!

    Dear CosmoGirl,

Would you please issue a statement to the Internet Community about the nature of the tampering that you have reported concerning the Take Action Hollywood film contest? Many of us worked hard to distribute and promote Kiri Davis’ video and the contest over the internet and we would like to know what has happened and why you are not counting the votes we worked so hard to obtain. According to recent voters, Kiri Davis was in the lead with votes and we would like a detailed account of the alleged tampering and why measures had not been taken before hand to prevent such tampering. This is surely a disappointment to all of the girls involved because instead of listening to the voice of your readers and the public, you have decided to ignore us and use a panel of judges who you have chosen. Furthermore, we would like to know who the judges are, their credentials, and if members of the African American community will be represented. We, the Internet Community look forward to your response.

    Sincerely,

  53. shell

Yeah I’m definetely going to try some other way to get my vote heard one way or another

  54. kenyanpebbles

instead of complaining, EMAIL THEM!! i just did that cause WTF is this?!

  55. Yeah I can smell The BS too She may loose the battle but it looks like she is winning the war. Her documentary is getting national attention.

  56. THats DEF. BuLL- ISH!!!

Ofcourse there would be a spike in the votes that quickly. Two prominant and popular black websites urged its users to support.

Black ppl don’t really read COSmo Girl like that (I mean i kno i got better things to read then that) so i wouldn’t have heard about this had it not been for CL.

WHo would really sabatage the votes, IT’s NOT THAT SERIOUS!

I was a little offended when I went to vote for “A Girl Like Me” and the video about peer pressure was the most voted for? Kiri’s film was BY FAR the most educational, relevant and social significant one.

WHITE PEOPLE hate hearing about black problems because they just don’t GET IT!

  57. Thanks for their email address! I’m on it right now!

I agree with MsMac in the way they could have found out about the “multiple votes” but I’m sure those other contestants had that advantage too. They just didn’t post it on the web so everybody and anybody could find out about it like we did. LOL My people, my people.

But once again, this is another example of how they think we are supposed to just shut up and be quiet while they run all over us. Another example of trying to keep us down. SMH

  58. Damn Straight

Once again, old Crackerjack decides to batten down the hatches when a Black girl ‘doesn’t know her place’ *rolls eyes*

Those types of magazines are only interested in us when we conform to certain stereotypes or someone is getting so much attention that they HAVE to give us some shine. A Girl Like Me was a brilliant documentary and while I already knew about some of the issues the girls raised, it was still very thought-provoking.

    Kudos to Kiri… we’re still behind U!
