Radio talk-show host Don Imus speaks with Rev. Al Sharpton (not pictured) during Sharpton’s radio show, in New York, April 9, 2007, where Imus apologized for insensitive remarks he made last week about the Rutgers women’s basketball team.

CBS Radio and MSNBC both said they were suspending Imus’ morning talk show for two weeks following his reference last week to members of the Rutgers women’s basketball team as “nappy-headed hos.”

update: girls bball team responds // to meet with Imus

The Rutgers administration and women’s basketball team blasted Don Imus’ “despicable” remarks Tuesday, but stopped short of saying he should be fired and agreed to meet with the embattled radio host.

“We all agreed the meeting with Mr. Imus will help,” Essence Carson, a member of the team that lost the
NCAA women’s championship game to Tennessee last week, said. “We do hope to get something accomplished during this meeting.” READ MORE

  1. I wish they would fire this nappy headed ho. 2 weeks is nothing.

  2. Look at Me

Imus is a loser anyway. He looks like an old burnt Clint Eastwood

  3. Amira

This fool had some nerve calling someone nappy headed!

  4. 2weeks is a slap on the hand. If he was really remorseful for what he said he would have apologize to them right after the game was over. He is only trying to save his rep & job. Is he going to go to rehab to??

  5. Who even listens to IMUS ???

That picture above makes him look like the Crypt Keeper……

I rather for a person to speak hatred out loud, than to keep it inside….

At least we know who we’re dealing with, when they let their racism & anger vent out…

  6. bonnie

A man that looks like he is one step from a grave has the nerve to talk about someone else?? He should be fired. Tim Hardaway said he hated gay people and he got fired from everything left and right, the same should apply to Imus. But I guess if you have 10 million listeners a day on your radio show then you get a pass…

  7. new yorker

but the other team was not light-skinned. they were regular blacks. was his statement racially insensitive? yes. but racist? i don’t think so b/c then he wouldn’t have called the girls from the other team cute and they were black as well

  8. melissa

I hate to say this, BUT, we’re going to get all bent out of shape about this, but we call each other N***** and worse every SINGLE day for entertainment purposes, then we wonder why they think it’s ok for them to use the same language? We need to stop being so hypocritcal, we should NOT accept this from our own much less the Pilgrims.

If we don’t respect ourselves, why would we expect anyone else to?

  9. Who is Imus? Who cares? I don’t, but fire his ass.

  10. @ New Yorker, I agree but I think he just realized that he just said a huge racial comment out-loud on the air and tried to lessen it by saying that the other team was cute! Lol, he ain’t slick!!!

I am not at all surprised that he is only receiving a slap on the wrist. That is so typical!

  11. Quart

    @ Bonnie
Right, he looks like he died 3 years ago!

  12. Cookie

He looks like an old white women! He should be FIRED…Black people when will we learn had it been one of us we would have been fired THE NEXT DAY!

If those he works for won’t fire his ass, then we should not use their products anymore…get the message GE!

  13. co-sign @ 6

I believe and trust in the lord & when its my time to go I will accpet it, but this picture makes me so scared to die

  14. Young D

its 2007 Its time for all of us to come together with word of the God and get over this racial hump. We’re all Gods children regardless if people want to belive it or not.

  15. Lol, @ Bill… He does look like the walking dead!

  16. MrsMcNeil06

……but Isaiah Washington had to go to counseling for his remarks????????????? We shouldn’t stand for this.

  17. Tha Don

We as black people need to stop being so hyper sensitive, that’s why the white man keep saying what they say to start some controversy and watch us cry about it while they laugh about it.

    He could’ve said much worse.

  18. Have you noticed that if you say ANYTHING out of line about Gay people, you will automatically either get fired (Tim Hardaway) or sent to Rehab (Isaiah Washington)
    BUT
If you say ANYTHING about Black People
    It’s like it’s no big deal……..

  19. Imus looks like like a Living Nightmare….

    He’s Uglier than Keith Richards

He looks like they pulled him out of the grave and sat him in front of a microphone..

  20. MrsMcNeil06

It is not about being sensative. It is about respect. If we don’t demand it we will not obtain it. For you to say the only reason the “white” people say racial comments is because we cry about it is crazy. Actually, the reason why they say it less than before is because we demand respect now. If we punk out and just let it go slavery will circle right back around.

  21. Young D

They who is they 18. You can’t be pissed at what he said if your no better then him

don’t comment about a racial issue with a racial issue people like you is the reason were not over the racial hump yet.

    #8 i think ur right

  22. Asentha

You are so right, Bill! Comment #19 was on the money!

If he had been a brother who made unflattering remarks about white females, he would have been FIRED on the spot!!!

  23. Call me the devil’s advocate but don’t we hear this language by our own people everyday and it’s nothing? Rappers, comedians, our girlfriends, they all call us this stuff. Why is it only wrong when someone of another race says it. Why isn’t Al or Jesse boycotting when a rap CD comes out with this type of language.

I don’t pay attention to the Imus, Glen Beck, or O’Reilly types. Hell even Howard Stern has called black women worse. All these men are white, old, and simple minded so they don’t get an ounce of reaction to anything they say.

  24. ms_mac

Can I ask why there is an advertisement for Ann Coulter on this thread; more specifically a thread about Imus calling black women names? LMAO!!!!!! Was that intentional Angel? You’ve killed it with that one if it is.

  25. you know what??

THIS MAN IS SO FUCKING EVIL…..AND HE IS NOT EVEN CAPABLE OF PRETENDING TO BE SINCERELY SORRY…HE’S ACTING LIKE EVERYBODY SHOULD GET OVER IT AND IT IS A DAMN SHAME THAT HE IS GONNA GET AWAY WITH THIS SHIT

    I FUCKING HATE WHITE PEOPLE!

  26. you know what??

…AND THIS MOMOFUKU FACE SCARY AS SHIT!

I actually heard Howard Stern says MUCH worst things about Black People, all the while Robin Quivers (his BLACK co-host) sits next to him and laughs….

“Nappy Headed Hoes”…..Howard Stern says stuff like that everyday on SIRIUS

  28. ms_mac

#24, I agree. For me it all goes back to the sense of ownership and entitlement that blacks feel they have for certain words, actions or phrases. But Steve Harvey made a good point on his morning show. He was talking about black men protecting our black women. That means not teaching little boys that it’s OK to call little girls a hoe or whatever. That means not turning the other cheek when a black woman is molested and pissed on because her aggressor is talented and creative. Some black folks get so mad when someone else does something to us but blow it off when we do it to ourselves.

I really wasn’t shocked by his comment. I’m sure he’s said it a million time behind closed doors. And I’m sure the only reason the execs didn’t cancel his ass is because they too had a good laugh when they heard it.

To me, we as a people getting fired up over this is no different than a man who beats his wife getting fired up over his son slapping his daughter. Do as I say and not as I do? Yeah right. Each one teach one is more like it.

  29. HE LOOK LIKE A GAY ASS FATHER TIME, AND A MUMMY WITH CLOTHES ON HE GOT SOME NERVE TALKING ABOUT ANYONE, 2 WEEKS?? SO TYPICAL I AINT EVEN MAD IM SURPRISED THAT HE EVEN GOT THAT SMH…

  30. OMG so this is the infamous Don Imus? God he looks like death walking…this man is one step away from a heart-attack!!!

  31. He looks like an old racist jacka$$. Stupid mofo can barely hold his neck up straight but he wants to call an all black female basketball team “nappy headed hoes”. His a$$ is on deck and on his way to the upper room so I suggest he get his mind right b4 his time is up. Racist prick.

  32. mai03

Preach Bill! And your right, he does look like they pulled him out of the grave and sat him in front of a microphone stand, with his smashed-in face ass!

It’s unfortunate, because the suspension to me is just like a slap on the hand. He’ll probally take his suspension and vacation with it, come back on the radio, pout about it for a while act all sorry and then just continue on with his show. Kind of seems like a pattern. What happened with Kramer? Nothing huh? My point exactly.

  33. algie

say it #29, its time as black people that we move forward and quit takin steps backwards.50 cent hollering ho this and ho that and going on and on about how hard he is, r kelly peeing on little girls and some of our people are like but he is a talented man wtf would you say the same thing if it was your little daughter or niece…man please. imus 50 cent all these boofing shows like flavor of love i love new york and college hill which we doing and entertaining them without the whiteman’s help needs to be fired and off the air and tv waves.ya’ll know god ain’t pleased with this mess

  34. The messed up part is that his 2 week suspension doesn’t even start until Monday next week. That is BS.

  35. Ms. S

He needs to be fired….point blank! Unfortunately it starts with us to create the change and take words like Hoe, Bitch, Nigga etc. and stop using them as terms of endearment! Especially when they were created to mock someone!!!!

Shout out to BIll!!!!! Keeping preaching my friend!!!!!

  36. KI KI

THIS IS SOMETHING HE HAS REALLY GOTTEN A SLAP ON THE WRIST FOR THAT TERRIBLE COMMENT! WE AS A PEOPLE HAD BETTER WAKE UP AND REALIZE RACISM IS STILL ALIVE AND REARING IT’S UGLY HEAD.

  37. bayboss

well if rappers condone this, then im not surprised…i havent seen no man//rapper who uses this step up. but i 4got all rappers hav white girl syndrome so they aint gonna stand up for this..they prolly happy

  38. kenyanpebbles

yep true, hypocritical if it’s a shock when an old white man says it but when rapper raps about or w.e it’s a joke. people will always disrespect black people as long as black people disrespect themselves.

  39. new yorker

    @txsupercutie
i didn’t think of it that way. it’s true. he could’ve called them cute to show that he wasn’t racist

    agree 100%

  41. Divine One

He most definitely needs to fired forget the apology he had no business saying those things…and from what I understand he made a remark about Maya Angelou…called her a “Jungle Bunny”…I never heard of this guy until recently….with Isaiah Washington making a comment gays…he had to go to rehab….and they are basically treating this case like it doesn’t matter….he old a#$# needs to be fired….period….

  42. Alana

I find it interesting that Black sites such as this one never sound off on hiphop lyrics. One has the platform to discuss those things but choose not to. In fact, you post videos from artists who have said worse. I’m not suprised by what Imus said. He has been saying those things for years! Should he be fired? Of course! But I hate when people act suprised like we are living in a Utopian society. Racism is not some nearly extinct animal who rears its head every now and then. It’s alive and well. But our issues with racism and classism get cannabalized when we aren’t consistent with our view points. The same vigor that we are using with Imus should be utilized when addressing the institutionalized racism ingrained in the rest of our society- especially the entertainment industry. We aren’t as mindful about what our own fellow Blacks are putting out there. Instead we encourage it. They only thing we have are the Jacksons and the Sharptons steam rolling CD’s outside on the sidewalk. The Essence Magazine campaign fizzled out. So we just start talking about it when an obvious racist slips up on the air? We need to be held just as accountable.

  43. Quiche-A

If people didn’t say crazy things, how else would Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson keep a job? They both get on my nerves and I don’t know who instituted the two of them as the black community moral police!

Meanwhile, while everyone’s attention is focused on this foolishness, the war in Iraq is still in full force and gas prices are up to damn near $3 per gallon…..in no way do I agree with Imus, but I do think there are more serious things to focus on. I don’t think what he said was “malicious.” I think he was trying to be funny but he tanked. You can’t say stuff like that on radio or TV without penalties.

Black folks will stay on stuff like this all year instead of looking at deeper issues within the black community such as supporting BLACK rappers who downgrade BLACK women the say way that white man did!

Do we really care that he apologized anyway? I mean really??? Who cares. None of us are so naïve to believe that YT’s don’t sit around and really talk like that about us anyway. I know they do!

  44. Who da fuck listens 2 his show anyway?? I sure don’t!!!!

Imus looks more like a damn Anus!! We all know he ain’t gonna get fired. He got a 2 week vacation, that’s all. He looks dead & hungry. Somebody give his ass a 3 pc w/ mashed potatoes from from popeyes please??? Lol

  45. I already know I’m gona get mad hate for my opinion on this, so I won’t even stay long. I feel like this…
    1. Point nlank, no matter what anyone on the outside says or what tone of voice they say it, no one disrespects us more than we do.
    2. We let the majority of Black comedians get away with a lot worse no questions asked.
    3. The only reason there’s been an influx in people disrespecting us on a large public scale is bacause they’ve seen us do it for years now they wanna join in.
    4. While I do believe Al Sharpton has the best intentions in mind, I think all the attention he’s giving this man is more advertisement (free at that) than he’s received in a long time. Plus he gets a 2 week paid vacation.
    5. Lastly, I was reading msn.com this morning and they had an article on him where he was being interviewed by Matt Lauer and there was a quote by him I think puts it all in perspective. He said “I may be a white man but in all my life I’ve never seen women, young Black women degraded and demeaned by that word than by Black men”.
    ….. Ain’t that the truth Ruth…….

  46. babyboss

#46….i couldnt agree more especially number 5!!!!

  47. Ms. Mac (29) I cosign 100%!

Let’s unify and start respecting each other, we can worry about ignorant, racist fools like Imus later.

Why are we still focusing on this fool? I doubt he’ll ever “sincerely” apologize or lose his job, getting mad is a waste of time and energy.

  48. Alana

In addition to that, I know money talks and all but an Ann Coulter add at the bottom of the screen? Really? She is a badge wearing Fox News Hound Dog who spews hate speech whenever she gets the chance.

    I agree with # 46
There is still no excuse for him thinking it was his place to speak like he did about our women.

I also agree with ms_mac…however she has always been right on.

  52. See.
    I told you..

White people LISTEN to what WE SAY, and REPEAT WHAT WE SAY…..

Rap Artist & Hip Hop Artist have been calling BLACK Woman Bitches, Slut & Hoes for years….

    Now, we get mad, huh…..

  53. CARAMEL 2

    Hi Bill,
Yes you are absolutely right. No matter what two wrongs don’t make a right. If he gets away with it then other races will feel that it is ok to say it. I think we have to stop saying things about each other that we don’t want other races saying about us.

The B word the N word and hoa’s has to stop!!!!!!

  54. COOLER

WHY ARE WE SO PISSED AT WHAT IMUS SAID?

RAPPERS SAY MUCH WORSE AND WHAT DO WE DO ABOUT THAT?
    WE NOD OUR NAPPY HEADS!

WE NEED TO HOLD EVERYONE TO ACCOUNT TO REMARKS WE FEEL ARE DISPARAGING TO BLACK PEOPLE…THIS KIND OF CHERRY PICKING OUTRAGE IS B.S.

  55. ZV

@46, I agree with you. If ya’ll REALLY want to punish Imus, let him KEEP his job and have to watch his step and give more to African-American causes. He said he wants to put one on his radio staff, and have more dialog with Blks. Firing him won’t do anything except make him more famous, he is already filthy rich but keeping him will force him to confront his issues with us.

  56. atlgirl

I aplaud the comments on this topic!! Especially Melissa #9, Bayboss #38, and Who in da #46. Well stated. I wonder what Ludacris’ stand is on this hot topic since his legacy is singing about “hoes in different area codes” and the implications of Imus’ statements to his Ludacris’ daughter. What will the rappers, et.al, say to their daughters as they grow older and become aware of their parents’ lyrics?

  57. ms_mac

43, Alana, well put. I agree totally.

Al Sharpton ain’t no fool. He is not trying to alienate this generation, whcih is why his campaigns for “justice” are always limited to hot button topics. I like his show Sharp Talk and he has some good stuff on there. But Al is not trying to come off like a fuddy duddy old geezer so he still has to embrace the younger culture. Hence the barber shop set up with younger people sitting around. Also peep the slickback curl. I guess he got tired of looking like an old pimp.

Sharpton is just as political as the next. Remember how riled up over Tawanna Brawley he got? Yet I’ve never heard him rally against the “R”. What’s the difference? Right is right and the evidence against those Italians was a lot weaker. But this is his profession. He chooses to take a stand where it’s most advantageous to his career and his MO. Not mad at him. I just wish there was someone out there with a little clout AND some balls.

  58. Jqueen

You need to write MSNBC folks and voice your displeasure IN AN INTELLIGENT AND ARTICULATE MANNER, not a bunch of cursing. I have posted my letter sent to MSNBC below:

“As a Black American, I am voicing my displeasure and complete distaste for Don Imus’ remarks about the Rutgers University basketball team.

To only give Imus a two-week suspension serves to let me know that MSNBC does not care about its Black viewers or the disrespect in which WE have been treated.

As a media outlet, you are responsible for reporting news accurately and fairly–not perpetuating a stereotype towards anyone, especially any person of any race, creed, or color born in this country.

You have failed in this charge. To continue to allow an ignorant mind such as Don Imus to spread his shallow brand of “trailer park rhetoric” is a reflection of who you are as an organization–one who doesn’t respect fellow Americans who happen to look different from you. While I don’t wish that anyone lose a job, Imus has proven he no longer deserves a public forum to promote ignorance to 2 million listeners, nor does MSNBC deserve to benefit financially. Imus needs to be moved to some type of office position in NoDotontheMap, USA.

Imus needs to sit down, face-to-face, with the Rutgers team and apologize to them. He should also sit with a panel of Black Americans randomly chosen, and get to know real, hardworking Black adults–not some random children that come on his ranch.

I am tired of the misrepresentation and disrespect displayed in both the white and media.

MSNBC, you will pay for the decisions you’ve made in regards to this. From this point forward, nothing you do will prosper until you change your ignorant minds and attitudes regarding non-White Americans. Whether it’s up front or at the end, every decision has a consequence. Your decision to keep such a disrespectful man on your roster has just positioned MSNBC for its fall.”

This is only a small representation of what we need to do. Again, start at your own front porch by making a commitment to stop using words such as: “Nigga”, “Bitch”, “Hoe” or any other derogatory term that tears your fellow Black American down. We come up with everything else, why can’t we come up with POSITIVE slang. Challenge your friends to stop using these words and pretty soon, it’ll spread.

Also, there’s plenty of you on here who can get to the ears of these rappers and athletes. Start spreading the word that you’re no longer standing for seeing black women, or men, misrepresented and disrespected with killing, sexual acts or images. If they can’t use these beats to build up Black America, we won’t buy…PLAIN AND SIMPLE.

DO SOMETHING!! Each person is valuable and powerful. One person CAN make a difference. All it takes is a decision.

  59. ms_mac
