I’m mad they keep casting Zoe Saldana as a Black woman in these films. Why can’t they cast as the Dominican woman she is? I’ll tell you why! All Spanish women in hollywood gotta look like Jlo or Selma Hayek to be considered or classified as Spanish! But then again it aint so good to be Spanish in Hollywood either! Your just looked at for your tits and ass! It’s sad!

LOL @ Angel!!!!!!! you know these bitches are dying to be first!!!!! crazyness

erm but either way I agree w. Ms.Lashonda on one thing. Next! The film clearly tried to be a different take on things at the beginning but it seems to fall back into these standard Black romantic/comdeies. I’m tired of our films being either dance competition type films or stupid and cheap black romantic comedies. God! What ever happened tothe drama. Soulfood anyone?

I really like Independent Black films, they are not always the greatest movies as far as production, but I still rent them and enjoy! This is one I will rent. I really like Hill Harper. Not so sure about Eva Pigford, I have yet to see her in anything worthwhile.

Hollywood calls her african-american and she thinks she is too. if anything zoe is more black than halle so hush

If that woman was claiming Cuba, Spain or Puerto Rico talking ’bout “soy una borricua, si señor!!” all y’all would call her a disgrace for distancing herself from her african heritage and trying to sound exotic. I’ll support the movie, thank you Angel!

As far as Zoe Saldana goes, her father was black. So she’s dominican and black or Blatina or whatever. Even if she wasn’t black, I love that chick. She is so smart and endearing in all the roles I’ve seen her in.

I think I will take a peek at this movie. It probably wont be all that good (who knows) but I like Zoe and I loves me some Hill Harper
(*Holmer Simpson voice* mmmmmmm Hill Harrrrper!)LOL

Anywho…I agree w/you Tia…..I am sick of dance competitions and hair salon flicks…..can we not do any better?

This is the reason why I watch Love Jones at least once a week. Granted the movie had its corny moments but Nia and Lorenz rocked it out!!! And the soundtrack was fever too!
I LOOOOVE THAT MOVIE!!!! Damn, I just realized that movie came out in 1997! SHUT UP! LOL

WHY DO OUR MOVIES HAVE TO BE HOOD MOVIES, DANCING ETC?? WHY CANT WE HAVE A CINDERELLA STORY LIKE PRETTY WOMAN? WHY CANT WE HAVE A ROMANTIC ACTION MOVIE LIKE SPEED?? New Yorker …you need to hush cause you obviously didn’t read a damn thing I said! I said I’m tired of Hollywood casting her as the stereotypical black woman in Hollywood! As for Hispanic….thats our Slave name…She’s Latin American or Latina…she was born in Dominican Republic…therefore I’m right in what I say! @ Ms. S , Zoe is doing what she needs to do be more acceptable and mainstream. If she were to limit herself to playing a latina , she would be hardly working - those roles are few and hard to come by. By recoginizing herself as a Black woman, she is able to choose from more roles. All the actresses have to do it to survive in the business - ex: j-lo played an italian in out of sight. i’m not saying it’s right but it’s just the nature of the business.

she’s repping DR all day but she still doesn’t deny being black.

Black Puerto Rican is black from puerto rico in my head, but maybe you define it differently and I respect that. I’m not against Zoe reppin’ her latin culture and she does it too, but she claims black as race and I was pointing out that if she was claiming everything else but black, ppl would be pissed. I don’t mind repping for the black women…it’s a beautiful thing….I just wish there was a way she could rep her African roots and her Dominican roots, then she recieve the real paper and get it poppin! Zoe is Black. Doesn’t matter if her ancestry is from the Dominican republic. My fam is from the south and she’s darker than me. She looks just as Black as lets say ahh, Megan Goode. Black women need to get off that hating shit. Hating on other black women from different areas. The slave ships brought us everywhere.

@ oatsuzn - that’s just it - it does matter whether or not she claims to be black and not claim to be dominican , then dominicans and the latino community in general would say that she was denying her roots and turning her back on them.

the same principle applies if she were to rep only being dominican, then she would be pissing off the black community.

it’s like walking on a tightrope trying hard to please both sides of your culture and identity…

You are right about that, they did drop us off everywhere…wasn’t hating man, I just wish she could rep for both African American and Latin American women…but Hollywood won’t give her dual roles cause she don’t like Jlo! and Zoe can act better than her to boot!

@ Bored@work

But does the culture she reps in real life affect the movie role??? I mean, that’s what Ms. S is trying to imply, but really it doesn’t. Zoe is a Black woman from DR. She fits the look for the role(a Black woman). You act as if she’s not doing spanish speaking roles because she refuses to. She doesn’t get cast for JLo roles because the viewing audience would see her as a Black woman not the typical Taino Latina. JLo played Selena, but shes the farthest thing from Mexican…but she LOOKs the part.

@ oatsuzn - you’re right. how she portrays herself in real life doesn’t affect the character she’s playing. but by limiting herself to only playing latina roles, she would be missing out. i think she’s doing a good job of repping both sides professionally and personally. she doesn’t get considered for or offered latina roles because she doesn’t fit the so called mold of what latin women look like because hollywood doesn’t realize that latin people come in all shades..

The Scoop

Thursday, April 19, 2007 /

There was a black film fest some months ago in DC (I want to say late last year) and they showed this movie and the director was there to talk about it. I thought it was a cute movie but unless it is edited, it is definitely something that I could not see making it to the big screen.

I saw this in block buster. I guess since seeing the trailer, i’ll go and rent it. Why does Eva always look ghetto in the movies she’s in? Might be because she keep getting cast in ghetto roles. But I’ll wait and see the movie, maybe the character calls for that.

I saw the movie last year. Its ok, pretty typical but ok. Its about a dude living his life as a stuggling actor. In persuing his dreams he dissed his girl, she left him, she got engaged to someone else, he ratted her out and her fiance broke off the wedding and they still wound up not being together…the end.

@9 No worries, Pigford’s screen time is all of 6 minutes, this hardly counts as a staring role or co-staring and her ass (or lack there of) was out yet again.
Zoe did great as usual and my mans Dorian is a great actor. He really needs to hit the big screen. Good job on the movie, it just needs some kinks worked on. Oh the writer of the movie casted himself and he can act as well.

Unless Zoe actually starts speaking in spanish in all of her roles how would the viewing audience know she was of Latin descent?? The look and the movie role has nothing to do with the actual person. lol god. When you watched Selena, did u say “why did she take this role? she’s not mexican”. Of course you didn’t, because she fit the part. If they had played Zoe opposite Will Smith in ‘Hitch’ instead of Eva Mendez, the viewing audience would view it as a Black male and Black woman in a romantic comedy.

The only Black Latina I can think of off the top of my head that is doing this is Lauren Vélez. All of her characters have been Latin, because she clearly looks it to the viewing public. If they tried to caste her as a ‘Sharissa Jackson’ all you Black women would be hating and saying “they couldnt caste a real Black woman for that role”. I mean c’mon now which way do you want it.

It’s not hating. The concept of the movie just seems played out. I’m all for black Hollywood getting more work but this movie is just not it. Spike Lee’s “Do The Right Thing” is a good example of excellent Black cinema with a interesting concept that wasn’t played out at that time. “Love & Basketball” was a really good romantic movie too. Movies like “Norbit” are the movies that are shaming black Hollywood (and yet people still went out and supported it because it’s supposedly black cinema) But this movie looks good though and it will most likely be better than all the terrible mess that’s been coming out.

she was born in america, her parents were born in d.r. she is african-american. do you know how many dominicans who are darker than her wouldnt even consider themselves black because they think being black is a taboo. zoe is black and she knows it! black is a race, hispanic/latino is a culture, spanish is a language, no one can be spanish!

oh and its funny in your 54th post you are now playing the victim lol you dont like being labeled yet your labeling zoe? why is she only allowed to play someone in a movie where the audience knows shes from hispanic descent?

Its amazing how people always turn even the smallest shit to racial issues. Let the girl be what the hell she is. If she says she’s black, she’s black. I dont see her having an issue with taking on black roles. If she did, do you honestly think she’d take the role? In time, she’ll be offered a latin role. It’ll come. There might be people out there that dont even know she’s half latina, for the simple fact that she doesn’t look mixed. She just looks like a carmel skinned black girl. With the exception of her hair. Her hair is kinda a giveaway.

Back to the subject at hand. Im always down for watching a movie. So I’ll check it out. Alot of ya’ll talkin about “I aint gonna waste my time watchin this dumb stuff….” Like yall really doin anything better with your time. I mean, how many of you are seriously doing something with it? NOw I remember when I first started posting on CL about a year ago a post went up about zoe saldana and if I am not mistaken please correct me if I am wrong she said that she was not black but a latina or something to that affect and it sparked a huge debate that even I took apart of. SO I am shocked to see her play roles that were written for black women if she does not consider herself black??? I also remember learning a very good history fact on that post about why dominicans don;t consider themselves to be black. I really do need to check those archives.
P.S> I am not saying that she needs to diss her latina culture but she is still a black woman.

@85 yes Zoe said she wasn’t black but Latina. I do remember that. So, I guess she actually labeled herself. That kinda solidifies what Ms S. was saying. SHe latina, let her play a Latina.

@77 She doesn’t have to be speaking Spanish just for folk to know she’s Latina. That’s the purpose of Ms S. post. If they stop casting all the light-skinned Latina folk will be aware of the fact that Latinas aren’t just light.

This actually looks good to me. I’ve been waiting to see a nice romantic black film! I am always interested in seeing independent films like this one because it gives me the chance to see less known actors and actresses. It’s so nice to see some new faces for a change! Sometimes I get so tired of seeing the same 5 black actors and actresses in every movie!

Finally, a nice love story (triangle) revolving around blacks that does not contain drugs, gang violence, or other negative stereotype.

Indepedent movies are the greatest. Just check out the IFC channel. They ALWAYS have a good movie on.

Jilly the movie does contain negative sterotypes… Cool comes to work late almost everyday. Also when he trys out for movie (in the movie) He can only get a part as a rapist or drug dealer. And he can’t even really get one of those gigs. He’s living with his mother…. i could go on and on… Eva (is terrible in the movie)… There are too many moments where it is silent for too long with nothing going on. I got this movie like 2 weeks ago from blockbuster.

and STFU to whomever said Zoe is black. She SAID she IS LATINA! READ ALL OF HER INTERVIEWS…DAMN!
I don’t think anyone brought up the race issue with her and I’m not gonna explain again. And living under a rock, this is the US and everything is about race whether you like it or not.

I understand where Miss S is coming from with regards to them actually portraying Zoe Saldana as Hispanic instead of Black.

Hollywood always portrays ethnic actresses as mixed or white looking, i.e. the chinese actresses like ziyi zhang are light skinned chinese, the latin ones always look practically white like eva longoria or salma hayek and so do the black ones like thandie newton and vanessa williams.

I think Ms S was making the point that not all latina’s look white/fair like Salma, some look practically black (and are) thus Hollywood should take that into consideration.

Zoe said in an interview that she doesnt want to be regarded as a “black actress”, but i dont understand why she then goes and acts in “black films”, thats kinds of non-sensical to me

The film looks good, a different story line i might see it if it comes out in the UK

Some of y’all need to calm ya asses down over all this racial nonsense. It is not that serious! Either you like this DVD called “Premium” or you don’t. Either you don’t like Zoe Saldana or you do. Ain’t no need trying to argue over what her race is. Point is Angel wants you to support it.

Yea I saw this, the movie has its moments. Mos def the movie is original and much different than your ‘typical’ black movies. But the script has too many plot holes. And the ending will have you scratching your head.

But I definetly like the vibe of the film, the cinematography & score were excellent.

I swear fo Lord race come up on this board more than a little bit. Why did that have to be the first comment? I read everyone’s justifications for their responses…well most of them anyway, and I’m glad ya’ll cleared up some of the issues. Plus, ya’ll should be happy Zoe’s not trying to be someone she’s not like J. Lo. She only recently went back to her Puerto Rican roots.

But anyway, I think the movie looks good. I’m sure I’ll rent it. I love Zoe. I think she’s a great actress. And I did the indie scene. A lot of those movies are better than what’s released by hollywood.

Now where has Sean Nelson been?…I haven’t seen him since the HBO sereis “The Corner”,now if somebody could find “Cain”(Tyrin Turner) from Meance To Society”.

I wrote, produced, and directed this film and it took over 7 years of straight hustle to get it all produced. Independent of the hollywood system. It took that long because it’s not the stereotypical film that shows the negative aspects of our lives. Let me tell you, films like Soul Plane and other films you might complain about get funded by the studios quickfast. I know because I turn down offers to do that kind of bullshit. This is a business y’all and to continue to make different types of films with black actors you have to make a trailer that makes the film somewhat relatable to the widest audience. Anyone who judges a film by the trailer itself, especially something with black faces and hints of a different perspective should know that marketing people are often scared to market ANY film on it’s true merits. It’s a shame that all these posts are quick to hit the racial element about Zoe’s heritage or pan the film without seeing it. Whether or not the negative posters on this site see Premium or not, which I have no control over and can’t be concerned with, it should be known that this film was created for one reason: to show another side of the black perspective with black characters in a universal story that can be enjoyed by anyone (if it’s something they’re willing to open themselves up to). The films for which you readily and easily spend your hard earned dollars (or your parents) DO NOT have your perspective, perception, or image under any consideration. As far as the plot and other elements, not every love story has to end the same way, nor be filmed the same way, nor pander to the least common denominator of how non-black people view us. Let your expectations go of the films that you’ve seen before or what you think this film might be and judge it on its own merits. It’s no wonder we have the same type of music…movies…clothing…etc marketed to us when you read a string of posts like on this site. If I were a studio I’d be hesitant to make anything remotely smart too because “they obviously don’t want that”. We can have range y’all, and different tastes, and all that shit can work. Peep my website at http://www.double7film.com, view the other films I’ve done by clicking on “Spotlight” and then “Films” and then tell me if you think my shit is typical. I’m riding for the cause to get the real stories out there. Anyway…to y’all who have seen the film, good looking out, and spread the word. Be easy…

This movie deserves to be supported and I’ll spread the word.

I swear, nobody read what the hell I said….I was criticizing the demographic the hollywood holds in this country that is yet another bashing towards all black women! Zoe Saldana is an example of that! Being cast for her appearance! I NEVER said she wasn’t a black Dominican! I’m tired of Hollywood creating these stereotypes. Yet once I said this, people on this blog, want to attack and say that it’s ignorance or an uneducated assumption. No it’s not? Why can’t I have these questions?

# 128…never commented on her not being black…READ THE COMMENT BERFORE YOU COMMENT!!!!! I was criticizing the demographic of the Spanish woman in this country! Zoe has represented the Afro Latina hard and I love that…but I hate that you can’t say her name in the same sentence as Jlo, Jessica Alba, Selma Hayek or Penelopee Cruz, America Feerera, Michelle Rodriguez etc.

If nobody didn’t understand that when the comment was read…..then ya’ll must be really be blind!!!! It was pro-black comment, not questioning this girl’s identity.

128…your right ignorance is bliss!….You should listen to what you say sometimes!!!! It might keep you from saying stupid things!

PETE… I didn’t like that after every scene you had to be reading a paragraph. I mean it was OK… I mean I did watch the whole thing. The ending made it worse because thats what really makes a movie… And nothing special happened. Nothing to remember. That’s whats up that you wrote produced and directed the film. I kinda feel bad for saying negative stuff about it. It’s def something to be proud of since you did everything on your own. Maybe I’ll go buy it now. ( i rented it when I saw it)

131 Chante … thanks for the support.

135 Focused23 … no worries on any of the comments, it’s all good. That’s what forums are about and I’m just the kind of cat to throw my hat in the ring too. I knew this film wasn’t gonna be for everyone. The only thing that’s frustrating is some people don’t know film history or see movies from all over the world to have a realistic reference point for the many different types of stories that are possible. Just because something isn’t for you doesn’t mean it isn’t good. You may hate classical music but you can’t say it’s not an art. Same applies to the knee-jerk proper cats who find no value in hip hop. Black folks need to allow more examples of our life to exist in the worlds of film, tv, radio, stage, magazines, literature…all of that…if we even expect to be seen as anything more than a monolithic race of people.

As far as nothing really happening in the movie, I think that all depends on where you are in your own life. I’m 29 years old, and while I don’t know how old anyone on this site is, I know people my age, older, and even younger who relate well to the fact that you can learn a lot from a relationship and ironically not be meant to share what you learn with that person. That’s a lot of what the film is about and that’s a bittersweet part of growing up. Maybe it’s an age group thing but that is specifically what people relate to at the ending of the film. They have a real person from their lives to place those emotions on.

If you do cop the DVD, I sincerely appreciate it. And I thank you for your comments. I hope as time continues maybe some of y’all will revisit the film and see what we were going for. It seems that the white critics are more concerned with us having more artistic voices out there than we as a people are in some regards, and unfortunately that’s pretty sad. If you check rottentomatoes.com, a site that LOVES to trash movies, you’ll see we have the very rare 100% approval rating for Premium. In the meantime, all the best with whatever you’re doing and don’t stop until you’re living life the way you’ve always dreamed.
