MSNBC PULLS DON IMUS’ MORNING SHOW

Who is the nappy headed ho now? MSNBC said Wednesday it will drop its simulcast of the “Imus in the Morning” radio program, responding to growing outrage over the radio host’s racial slur against the Rutgers women’s basketball team.

The NBC News statement said:

“This decision comes as a result of an ongoing review process, which initially included the announcement of a suspension. It also takes into account many conversations with our own employees. What matters to us most is that the men and women of NBC Universal have confidence in the values we have set for this company. This is the only decision that makes that possible. Once again, we apologize to the women of the Rutgers basketball team and to our viewers. We deeply regret the pain this incident has caused.”

Word is execs at the CBC Corporation are also calling for him to be pulled from their station.

In an interview with ABC News Wednesday afternoon, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., called for talk radio host Don Imus to be fired, and said he would never again appear on his show, which is broadcast on CBS Radio and MSNBC television.

“I understand MSNBC has suspended Mr. Imus,” Obama told ABC News, “but I would also say that there’s nobody on my staff who would still be working for me if they made a comment like that about anybody of any ethnic group. And I would hope that NBC ends up having that same attitude.”

Liars!!! What really matters most is all the sponsors who started pulling their contracts! I’m grateful for what NBC has done, but keep it real! Only after the dollars start disappearing by the millons, did it become apparent that the perpetrator had to go!

I knew Imus was finished the minute I heard what he said! Life is changing as we know it, and its possible to do dumb things that get you disqualified!

  11. So true @ Meatloaf. NBC was losing those big bucks and said it was time for his ass to go!

  12. Dave

First of all Barack Obama will make a great president period. Black or otherwise. Secondly, I am happy some serious acton is being taken. These slap on the wrist punishments for this type of behavior is what is giving these people the audacity to continue making statements like this over public media outlets. You can be as racist as you want but keep that shit in your own home.

  13. REVIVING THE CL CHAT!!

COSIGN MEATLOAF!! they knew it would hurt their pockets so they tossed his ass sideways. think before you speak but his racist ass couldn’t help it he says it so often that it just came out, HIS BAD.

  14. yes

good, a lot of people sent e-mails to msnbc including myself, glad to see they worked

  15. Dave

And I am sick of these white celebrities making these racial comments then running to put the black band-aid(Al Sharpton and/or Jesse Jackson) on it. Who told them that these two caricatures were our spokespeople.

    ________

…and that’s nothing but the truth.

If NBC was so noble, they would have called his ass on his comments immediately after he made them last week – even before there were protests.

But the protests and outrage did prevail, and say what you want about them, the Revs. Jesse and Al did have a hand in mobilizing the forces and getting this out in the open.

  18. babybosss

    @dave
cuz young blk people cant stand up for themselves or they think its ok so we go to al and jesse..which i dont agree with being a spokesperson…

  19. Yeah take that Anus I mean Imus no fuck that he is an anus.

  20. Mrs. Lindo

    Good bye Mr. Imus!!!

  21. I know this is about Done Anus, but can I just say VOTE OBAMA PEOPLE. Although i always recognised and acknowledged his leadership skills, political clout & admired and supported his values I kinda thought what is the point, it aint gonna happen. But its always like that before the first black achiever breaks down a barrier. People probably thought like that before Rosa Parks, MLK, Condolezza Rice came along. Lets get behind him & let our voices be heard.

On the Imus issue……….actually i’m through with it

  22. Anus need sto kiss all of those girls asses right about now!

  23. cdnyc

@10.Meatloaf: You took the words right out of my mouth.

I was watching the early morning news on Monday and this media expert bascially said that if the sponsors didn’t pull their ads, Imus wouldn’t be fired. He said money is the bottom line here.

I’m glad he’s gone, but NBC…keep it real!!!

  24. clarkthink

yeah, this is a financial decision. We need to learn from this…..it’s not Black or White, it’s Green.

  25. Dauphiné

    agree with meatloaf.

  26. cdnyc

    @16. “the black band-aid” LOLOLOL!!!

  27. LILA

Now hopefully this will cause people in positions such as these to think before they speak.

  28. Now this is what i’m talking about!! My 10 letters, and the letters of all the other black folks who wrote one made a difference.

This really goes to show that the power of solidarity ain’t no joke!!

If you don’t stand for something now, you’ll fall for anything later. STAND UP AND BE HEARD!!

  29. MSNBC Drops Don Imus Simulcast Amid Furor
    By DAVID CRARY, AP
NEW YORK (April 11) – MSNBC said Wednesday it will drop its simulcast of the “Imus in the Morning” radio program, responding to growing outrage about the radio host’s racial slur against the Rutgers women’s basketball team.

“This decision comes as a result of an ongoing review process, which initially included the announcement of a suspension. It also takes into account many conversations with our own employees,” NBC news said in a statement.

The announcement also was made on air.

Talk-show host Don Imus triggered the uproar on his April 4 show, when he referred to the mostly black Rutgers women’s basketball team as “nappy-headed hos.” His comments have been widely denounced by civil rights and women’s groups.

The decision does not affect Imus’ nationally syndicated radio show, and the ultimate decision on the fate of that program will rest with executives at CBS Corp . In a statement, CBS reiterated that Imus will be suspended without pay for two weeks beginning on Monday, and that CBS Radio “will continue to speak with all concerned parties and monitor the situation closely.”

MSNBC’s action came after a growing list of sponsors – including American Express Co., Staples Inc., Procter & Gamble Co., and General Motors Corp. – said they were pulling ads from Imus’ show for the indefinite future.

But it did not end calls for Imus to be fired from the radio portion of his program. The show originates from WFAN-AM in New York City and is syndicated nationally by Westwood One, both of which are managed by CBS Corp.

Bruce Gordon, former head of the NAACP and a director of CBS Corp., said before MSNBC’s decision Wednesday he hoped the broadcasting company would “make the smart decision” by firing Imus.

“He’s crossed the line, he’s violated our community,” Gordon said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. “He needs to face the consequence of that violation.”

Gordon, a longtime telecommunications executive, stepped down in March after 19 months as head of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, one of the foremost U.S. civil rights organizations.

He said he had spoken with CBS chief executive Leslie Moonves and hoped the company, after reviewing the situation, would fire Imus rather than let him return to the air at the end of an unpaid two-week suspension beginning next Monday.

A CBS spokesman, Dana McClintock, declined comment on the remarks by Gordon, who is one of at least two minorities on the 13-member board.

The 10 members of the Rutgers team spoke publicly for the first time Tuesday about the on-air comments, made the day after the team lost the NCAA championship game to Tennessee. Some of them wiped away tears as their coach, C. Vivian Stringer, criticized Imus for “racist and sexist remarks that are deplorable, despicable, abominable and unconscionable.”

The women, eight of whom are black, agreed to meet with Imus privately next Tuesday and hear his explanation. They held back from saying whether they’d accept Imus’ apologies or passing judgment on whether a two-week suspension imposed by CBS Radio and MSNBC was sufficient.

Stringer said late Wednesday that she did not call for Imus’ firing, but was pleased with the decision by NBC executives.

Imus has apologized repeatedly for his comments. He said Tuesday he hadn’t been thinking when making a joke that went “way too far.” He also said that those who called for his firing without knowing him, his philanthropic work or what his show was about would be making an “ill-informed” choice.

At the Rutgers campus in New Brunswick, N.J., about 300 students and faculty rallied earlier in the day to cheer for their team, which lost in the national championship game, and add their voices to the crescendo of calls for Imus’ ouster. One of the speakers was Chidimma Acholonu, president of the campus chapter of the NAACP.

“This is not a battle against one man. This is a battle against a way of thought,” she said. “Don Imus does not understand the power of his words, so it is our responsibility to remind him.”

  30. Amaya

Not to be funny or anything but can someone give me five good reasons to vote for Obama, Besides the fact that he’s black ?

  31. kaykay

    yay wow go black people

  32. Long Hair Don't Care

Imus needs to re-evaluate his perception of a “ho.”

After all, he’s from the same race that spawned chicks like Paris Hilton, Anna Nicole Smith (A Case For Maury), Heidi Fleiss, Marilyn Monroe (Fucked JFK), Elizabeth Taylor (who married anybody who looked at her sideways), the Girls Gone Wild college flashers, Zsa Zsa Gabor (another serial wifey), Jenna Jameson, shall we go on?

Not that it’s cool to call anybody out of their name, but if you think about it, the most infamous “loose women” throughout history have not been women of color…they’ve been a bunch of White girls.

And as far as the “nappy headed part,” he looks like he could use a PCJ No-Lye Relaxer himself. So I wouldn’t talk if I were him.

  33. I hear a lot of you saying that it was a financial decision made by NBC to let Imus go, and I do not disagree that part of the decision was influenced by finance, but at the same time, let’s not forgot that this financial decision was due in large part to black folks being outraged at such comments, and urging advertisers to not support the show.

When we simply say that it was purely a financial decision, we deny all the black folks who wrote letters, called radio shows, and picketed NBC studio. Let’s give our people some credit here. I wrote 10 letters, and I know 15 people personally who wrote an average of at least two letters.

If we only had the solidarity to stop purchasing trash from certain hip hop artists…

  34. ThinkAboutIt

Rev Jackson and Rev Sharpton weren’t the only Pastors speaking on this matter – Rev Soaries of First Baptist in NJ is mediating the meeting with Don Imus and the team and TD Jakes let his position be known as well —

But mainstream media tends to show only Rev Al and Rev Jackson all of the time — that’s something to “Think About”.

Bishop T. D. Jakes’ Comments Concerning Racist Comments by Radio Talk Show Host Don Imus

    DALLAS, April 9 -
Bishop T.D. Jakes, Senior Pastor/Founder, The Potter’s House of Dallas, Inc.:

“Trying to be funny” is a justifiable excuse for calling a group of distinguished young African-American women “nappy-headed [whores],” or so says radio talk show host Don Imus about his racial slurs April 4 toward the young ladies of the Rutgers University women’s basketball team.

Given that Imus and his producer are still employed, one must assume that NBC, their employer, agrees. With this attitude, is it any surprise that racism continues to poison America?

Jesus taught that “What goes into a man’s mouth does not make him ‘unclean,’ but what comes out of his mouth, that is what makes him ‘unclean.’” (Matthew 15:11 NIV)

The fact remains that Imus’ unprovoked racial slurs — which sadly appear to be part of a personal pattern over the years — clearly reveal a deeper malignancy of the heart. But it is the lack of immediate and meaningful response by his employer that reveals a deeper cancer in America. Press statements and public appearances are mere bandages when someone’s daughter is called a whore for fun.

True healing will come only when individuals honestly address the root of their remarks, rather than making excuses for them, and only when employers and advertisers in our society respond immediately and decisively. Hall of Fame baseball player Cal Ripken immediately canceled his forthcoming appearance on Imus’ show; others should do the same.

Imus is a broadcast industry professional, who I hold to a higher standard. Imus’ employers are broadcast conglomerates that I also hold to a
higher standard. And the advertisers that spend millions on Imus’ show should also be held to a higher standard.

Allison Gollust, senior vice president for news communications at NBC, has stated: “We take this matter very seriously.” If so, Imus and Bernard McGuirk should be unemployed today and the excuses should stop, so that the healing can begin.

On behalf of decent moral people of all backgrounds, and specifically for women of color, we heard the so-called joke.

But now the entire media, advertisers and industry executives should deliver the punch line.

  35. Nikki

Yess!!!!! He had grandmothers out there protesting too, he should be ashamed!

  36. David

Imus called these women Nappy Headed Hoes, Jiggaboos, and Wannabes.

He called Venus Williams an Animal and said that her and Serena belonged in National Geographic.

He called Gwen Ifill (a first class journalist) a CLEANING lady.

It’s time his IGNORANT ASS GOT IN TROUBLE.

  37. @ post 34, i meant protested at NBC studio

I agree 100% – It was a financial decision, but one that resulted from the pressure put on NBC, MSNBC, and their advertisers from the unity of the Black folk.

  39. Mi Mi

As much as I love and respect Obama, and want him as a president I don’t think “white” america is ready for a black president just yet…There is still too much racial tension going on and until that tension neutralizes Obama would be putting his life at risk for a possible assassination (with all of the crazy white “rednecks” and KKK clans still active in America today. They are not ready for a black president…I think he should’ve waited till 2012 to run.

  40. Ha Ha Ha Ha…What goes around comes back around Imus you loser.

Glad someone finally put their foot down and I know it wasn’t without a fight though…love the folks who fought tooth and nail for Imus’ show to get pulled!

I love that Obama included his daughters in on his thoughts:

He didn’t just cross the line, he fed into some of the worst stereotypes that my two young daughters are having to deal with today in America,” said Obama, the only black candidate in the presidential race.”

  43. MS._BOSTON

I USED TO LISTEN TO HIS SHOW AND I AM NOT GOING TO FRONT HE HAD ME LAUGHING ALL THE TIME, HOWEVER I AM PLEASANTLY SURPRISED THAT MSNBC LET HIM GO BECAUSE HE JUST WENT TOO DAMN FAR!!

  44. One last thing and I’m through with Mr. Imus. While this is a great victory for black folks, we can not put this issue to rest without acknowledging the seeds of the ignorance that brings about some of these ignat comments from white folks. The rap and hip-hop industry and many black comedians should share in this fallout. There is not the same outrage from the black community when some African American entertainers cavalierly and excessively use the words “bitches,” “hos” and “nigga” – having turned them into almost endearing terms.

Due to the overwhelming number of whites and other non-blacks that listen to rap music, and the fact that many of these people rarely interact with blacks, their views of black are greatly shaped by what they hear and see on BET. The African American community is better served when we have a similar standard for any sort of disparaging remark against black people.

If we don’t understand white “supremacy” and its tools, everything else we know and have learned will only confuse us more.

  45. WOW……I’M SURPRISE I REALLY DIDN’T THINK THAT HE WAS GONE TO GET FIRED BECAUSE HE HAS THE COMPLEXION FOR THE PROTECTION BUT I GUESS THAT WAS TIRED OF HIS ASS

  46. Lili

I’ve said it before…I was a frequent watcher of his MSNBC simulcast and just happened to sleep in and miss the maelstrom that one particular morning. He’s a pretty amusing guy with some good points to make, when he isn’t being a dick.

A two week suspension was not sufficient; proper action has been taken on the part of NBC & MSNBC. Now it’s on CBS.

What I DO want to call to everyone’s attention is that Imus…despite all the racist and idiotic remarks he has made during his career, has done a lot of good for others and is probably a pretty decent guy. He did something wrong and now he has to face the consequences.

    - What about Rush Limbaugh? He makes approximately one racist remark a month. Probably more. Besides that, he is completely unapologetic. An example is calling Barak Obama and Halle Berry “Halfrican-Americans”.

    - Fox News? I can name Sean Hannity, but there are certainly more people on that network who have made insensitive remarks.

    - I can usually watch Glenn Beck on CNN, but he’s said horrible things toO, including referring to the survivors of Hurricane Katrina as “scumbags”.

It’s good that we’ve all rallied together and forced NBC to make a decision –not to mention all the corporate sponsors who left and people within NBC/MSNBC who wanted Imus off the air– but what about all the OTHERS? There are people in the media who really DON’T like Black people and other minorities, who really ARE racist, who haven’t done anything to help Black people, and they haven’t received this backlash.

ARE WE GOING TO STEP UP AND STAND AGAINST THE OTHERS?

  47. CHERISH

OH someone calls us nappy headed and suddenly is the topic of conversation allllll over america. YET WE HAVE TROOPS IN IRAQ DYING EVERYDAY!.

LIFE GOES ON, WHO CARES!! HE CALLED SOMEONE A NAPPY HEAD!!. WHATEVER AND KUNTA KINTE GOT HIS FOOT CAUGHT OFF!He survived!

  48. kmniles

I don’t know about you guys but I’m eagerly awaiting to see which ultra conservative tick will jump to his defense (Fox News, Billy O., Shawn Hannity anyone?) They’ll let it die down a minute but mark my words you haven’t heard the last of this.

Obama needs to watch it. Rebubs are fishing for contradictions to jeapordize his campaign. I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to spin his comments against him.

  49. windwalker1313

Good to see that this all worked out well! I actually didn’t think that they would pull the show. Very cool.

Snoop Dogg: Don’t Compare Me To ‘This Punk’ Don Imus
Posted by Tim Graham on April 11, 2007 – 17:19.

On the Imus vs. Rappers front, MTV News reports that rap star Snoop Dogg has issued a new “warning” to the public: Don’t dare to compare his lyrics — or any other MC’s — to Don Imus and his recent racially inflammatory comments. MTV says “the Dogg” found there is no parallel. The Rutgers women Imus ridiculed were a success story, while the women he knocks in his music are “ho’s that’s in the hood that ain’t doing sh–.”

MTV transmitted a long, profane self-defense Snoop offered in a phone interview:

“It’s a completely different scenario,” said Snoop, barking over the phone from a hotel room in L.A. “[Rappers] are not talking about no collegiate basketball girls who have made it to the next level in education and sports. We’re talking about ho’s that’s in the ‘hood that ain’t doing sh–, that’s trying to get a n—a for his money. These are two separate things. First of all, we ain’t no old-ass white men that sit up on MSNBC [the cable network home to Imus] going hard on black girls. We are rappers that have these songs coming from our minds and our souls that are relevant to what we feel. I will not let them mutha—–as say we in the same league as him.”

Snoop Dogg insisted “this punk” Imus deserved much more than a two-week suspension. He deserved to be fired. He should at least be punished like the NFL suspended Tennessee Titans football player Adam Jones for an entire season for scrapes with the police:

“Kick him off the air forever,” he said. “Ban him like they did [Adam] ‘Pacman’ Jones. They kicked him out the [National Football] League for the whole season [for numerous violations of the NFL's personal-conduct policy, including multiple arrests], but this punk gets to get on the air and call black women ‘nappy-headed ho’s.’

  53. Ok so he’s basically been fired? Can we now ban all rap music that has mention of black females being hoes and bitches and sluts? Of course we’re not going to do that. But oh, of course, if these rappers were right it would be a crime against humanity. I just don’t GET this double standard thing! Imus is totally in the wrong, of course. Any knuckle head can see that. But why just punish him or use him as the scape goat. I can name a dozen black people who use this kind of language against African America females on the daily. This stuff is all over our radios yet we’re not going to do squat about that but we’re going to get pissed when whitey says the same damn thing? Hmmmmm.

  54. cdnyc

@53. Please tell me somebody made that up!?!?!

  55. GRANTED, DON IMUS IS DEAD WRONG…NOT TAKING ANYTHING FROM THAT, BUT ME PERSONALLY, I DON’T UNDERSTAND Y EVERYONE IS ALL UPSET BECAUSE ITS NOTHING WE HAVEN’T ALREADY HEARD OR SEEN COMING FROM OUR OWN PEOPLE. I THINK THAT BLACK PEOPLE ARE TOO SENSITIVE WHEN IT COMES TO THIS WHOLE RACE ISSUE ESPECIALLY SINCE THEY ARE DISHIN IGNORANCE THEMSELVES. ITS OKAY FOR A BLACK PERSON TO CALL WHITE PEOPLE CRACKERS, HONKEYS, PINK, ETC. AND THATS OKAY, BUT WHEN THE SHOE IS ON THE OTHER FOOT, EVERYONE HAS THEIR UNDIES IN A BUNCH BECAUSE THE MAN IS WHITE. NOT FAIR!!! AS FAR AS AL SHARPTON, WHEN ELSE DO U SEE HIM, BUT WHEN SOME RACIAL FLING IS GOIN DOWN. I THOUGHT HE WAS FOR HUMAN RIGHTS, BUT HE’S PROVED HE’S ONLY FOR BLACKS RIGHTS. IF U ARE GOING TO CHECK THE PROBLEM, CHECK IT ALL THE WAY AROUND THE BOARD, NOT JUST IN THE WHITE COMMUNITY. I WAS ALWAYS TAUGHT THAT YOU CAN’T HELP SOMEONE ELSE CLEAN UP THEIR HOUSE, UNTIL URS IS CLEAN.

  56. Tonya

Now it’s time to lean on CBS Corp. to follow suit.

  57. Ione

They got his tail out of there and quick! Now we need to start working on “other” images that portray our black women in a negative way all the time.

  58. Aaimah

That curly headed bastard needs to go stand in the unemployment line.

  59. Hooray for #56!

    Sometimes my people remind me of a little kid who broke mamma’s vase. When mom asks whos fault it is, the little brat looks over his shoulder and points to the younger brother. Imus was, in his own ignorant way, trying to immulate US! He didn’t phrase it like a southern Redneck, he said it like a black person would say it…Nappy headed hoes?! sounds like something I’ve heard a million times in “our” community. Now let me see…where did he get that from…ummmm…oh yeah, US! Those who deem themselves “poets” and our “ghetto CNN” ie. rappers, are the ones who say much more vile things and aren’t the least bit ashamed. The only thing more embarassing and racist, is hearing blacks try to explain why its ok for them to say those things. Case in point;

“Know’Im’Saying, niggaz ain’t talkin bout all females, they just talkin bout hoes and bitches. There’s a difference between a Hoe and a female…blah blah blah.”

When 90% of our popular culture refers to each other as this, then tries to attach a legitimate reason to it, no wonder white people think thats what we’re all about! Imus should be fired, but black people need to be taken to the woodshed for perpetuating their own ignorance…THAT’S not the “white mans” fault.
