NIGERIA’S NEXT TOP MODEL.
Monday, April 9, 2007
I’ve been getting emails about the latest show in the ANTM franchise and I even got a hold of some pictures. The only thing I couldn’t get a hold of was some info on the show. The official site is down due to a surge in hits, and don’t even get me started on Wikipedia.
I’m over America’s Next Top Model, but I would be interested in watching this show. If anyone has any info on it, hit me up and I will update this post. In the meanwhile, check out the pics.
Go ‘head Tyra, I know I hate but you ain’t playing around when if comes to your business.

Finally! Tyra is doing something that doesn’t annoy me. I can’t wait for this!
What’s also great is that these chicks probably won’t be as dramatic/crazy acting as black American females on television (ie ‘I Love NY’, ‘Flavor of Love’, and other ghetto shows) are. We know we can act a fool on tv sometimes.

I don’t know. I can hardly get into ANTM. I don’t even attempt to watch The Austrailian one or the British one. Those are some beautiful sistas though. But I highly doubt I’d tune into this one either.

How wonderfull! Top Model really is world-wide! It is going to be nice to show the beautiful women of Nigeria. The world needs to see young women in Africa in a positive light representing the beauty of their people. I hope that they will broadcast it here also. Hell, if they can air Top Model British Explosion and VH1 can show Australia’s Next Top Model, then there is no reason not to broadcast this show as well!

They have too many African modelling competitions so why not make Africa’s giant have their own show. Big up to my Nigerian sisters. We have to show people that we all do not look like what they show on Tv.

Aint nothing more beautiful than your own-
Beautiful black women in all different shades-fierce!
Hell I would like for them to do a top model here in america with just black women, but someobody would think that the show was discriminating-sometimes I just want to see a show that specifically deals with African-American Women.
Hey they have a new gay channel offered on cable (not a homophobic-to each their own) but I would love to watch a channel that focused on african-american women or women of color. Something similar to Essence magazine-that addresses everyday issues that woman of color encounter.

I wonder if they’ll also have a judge with a crooked lace front and a wonky eye?
That’s nice that they’ve taken the show to another country where the represented majority aren’t pigment-challenged. However, I have to be honest and say that not all of those girls are stuuners. It looks to me like they put the most attractive ones (in white) up front, which was a smart move. But beauty is subjective so it’s anyone’s game.

LOL, who said that these women won’t be crazy and ghetto like our sistas here in America? Everyone knows that Africans are crazy as hell! I had so many African friends and they told me in their country, African females be fighting with sticks and knifes in front of a big crowd to settle their differences! LOL, i don’t know if that’s all of Africa but it does happpen. I’m so glad that Tyra decided to do this. She is one who likes to embrace our black culture and I believe that’s something we’ve lost with accepting and supporting white and puerto rican people to cop our style. This show should be interesting.

As an African woman, I feel they have not done us justice with the women they have chosen to represent Nigeria’s beauty. Most of the girls look the same, and while some are beautiful, most are not. I get irritated when people say women from Africa are beautiful just for the sake of trying to be “down” with their roots. I’ve seen much prettier women walking down the streets..they could have done a much better job selecting the contestants.

You know what, I have nothing against beautiful women of any color but I must ask, WHY ARE WE SO CONSUMED WITH A WOMAN’s LOOKS????? I mean, Im talking about everything in society from magazines to TV to beauty pageants. It makes me feel like , “If Im not beautiful,Im not as valuable as ,say, the next top model.” I got to ask myself, do I want my future daughter to grow up striving hard to be attractive, or striving hard to be intelligent because it seems like we adore, respect, and admire women that are beautiful more than the latter. Plus, beautiful women seem to make more $$$ and have more success by using their beauty. Intelligent women seem to have to work hard to be successful. Just a thought.

people, the show is franchised out to different COUNTRIES not continents!!! Nigerians, being the business minded people they are, got on it quickly … no doubt other countries will soon follow [South Africa and Egypt are said to be representing next] … so, easy on the global geography ignorance …
and I have to agree with the person that wrote about some posters being fake .. if this was the next installment of America’s next top model, we wouldn’t hear the end of how ugly most of these chics are .. but now because we don’t want to politically incorrect, we’re letting it slide .. nah, be real with yours .. most of those girls bodies are BANGING!!! but only like two, three tops are actually fashion model cute .. their skin color and complexion is flawless and they exude 100% regal entitlement!! loves it!!
anyway, I roomed with Naijas’ and they are hilarious .. especially after getting a few beers in them - so, I pray they bring that show over to VH1 SOON!!!

@ #92 - fall back with your foolishness! Nigerians speak quite clearly, accent or not. They’re easy to understand. Get outta here with that mess!
The show came up with this idea b/c A LOT of the hottest runway and catalogue models these days come from Nigeria. Oluchi has done well for herself/Victoria’s secret, and so has Nnenna (top 6 in ANTM two seasons ago). The model scouts had been making frequent trips to find new talent and so Tyra simply picked up on it.
Sorry, but most of these girls don’t look the same to me. They could have gotten a litttle more variety but they still don’t look the same

Yeah you’re counted as African American that is even more of a proper term than Black American that just seems offensive but if you want to be all politically correct then so be it. Noone is going to change the books for you so just hop off of it.
We Africans don’t like a lot of African Americans because you guys just make us look bad you guys do some dumb shit that we were raised not to do and you know it. when black people are stereotyped it’s mostly because of you people
My parents came from nothing in Nigeria and they are very established my dad’s an orthopedic surgeon and my mother is a nurse and they own a couple of houses and you people can’t even pay your damn rent. black people will never be fully respected in this country because of African Americans.

I think some of those girls are pretty. But, I don’t think they picked the prettiest girls from Nigeria. Not by a long shot. Man I swear every time they represent my Africa they do this shit!!!

NNTM,
Hmmm! I know Nigeria can’t sustain a truly large modeling industry, so I guess we must remember this is basically a reality show that gets a bunch of women together to fight, lie, cry, pose and vogue as they try to break through with a “modeling” contract.
I appreciate the diversity within the Black Diaspora, but as one person commented, several of the girls don’t have the “it” factor/look. That may change as they go through the process. Also, do you think the industry will let too many Alek Wek’s breakthrough (she’s a choc to the bone Black unweaved woman!).
Tyra is more about exploitation of women than celebrating beauty. She seems so demeaning with her heavy ass lacefront crown. She acts like the girls have to be ‘perfect’ to make it in the industry, when in truth they are merely hangers. Also, so many girls with top agencies are drunken messes. I guess in the name of entertainment and $, she’s doin’ good.

This is an interesting concept. Looking forward to see who the winner will be.
There is actually a competition that represents the whole continent of Africa, called Nokia Face Of Africa….this is the same competition that launched Oluchi’s career. Africa has some of the most successful black models…Iman, Oluchi, and Alek Wek.
Maybe tyra will include other African countries.

Dunno, if anyone’s said this already, and i’m too lazy to read through all fiftymillion comments. It is NOT a reality show, its a modelling competition…as in, one day only.

They look nice and healthy. They don’t look bulimic. They don’t look like they could use a sandwich. There is at least 1 girl on ANTM that looks like she is sick.

Hi,
I don’t Know if anyone has mentioned this in the comments area but Nigeria’s Next top model is an event, taking place in London, and not a TV show. The company in charge is still in the process of purchasing rights to the franchise from Trya’s production Company, so i doubt if she is involved in the event, at all.
May I take this opportunity to state that I Luuuurrrrvvveeeee your blog for too many reasons that I cannot mention. Take Care.

Hi,
Nigerian’s next top Model is an event taking place in London, rather than a Tv show. The company involved are trying to buy rights to the “Top Model” franchise from Tyra’s production company, so I don’t think she is involved , at all.

Ummm….tyra didn’t lump canada and america into one just because they’re on the same continent.
Seperate country….individual show.
Africa isn’t made up of states u kno…it’s made up of countries with totally different races, cultures and languages…Not to mention the difference in looks and standard of beauty….so why not have Nigeria’s top model.
Afterall i can’t see the whole of europe agreeing to Europes top model, or instead of having an ANTM let’s just do a a North + South America’s top model…

Naija STAND UP!! good look but this would have done better to have been a reality programme as opposed to the one day compo .. but regardless, I’m all over it - for the record, most of you AfAm that are posting your disgust at the ‘beauty’ factor of these chics, *shaking head* - remind yourselves that you’re no better than Imus in your mentality. These women are GORGEOUS not only because they’re from mother Africa or their confidence but because they probably couldn’t care less if you think they measure up to your diluted/tainted bloodline .. they are doing them and that’s what they teach us in Africa that someone just wasn’t quite taught here, eh?

For all of you dumb a$$ AFRICANS judging Black Americans get the hell off of a “BLACK CELEB GOSSIP SITE”.
As far as you #112, African’s sterotype and are so judgemental of BLACK Americans because like I said, they don’t think we are pure,we haven’t gone through the struggle, and other than that there is no respect there because YOU ALL automatically think your’e better (for some odd reason, that I can’t POSSIBLY seem to understand LOL). Your comments about what your parents do for a living is pointless! There’s poverty every fu(kin where, and believe it has NOTHING to do w/ race dumb ass. You stereotyping and saying “Black people” do dumb shit, goes to show how silly and ignorant you are. Don’t get mad and get in your feelings because those girls are simply NOT CUTE whatsoever! If you can’t stand Black people so much, take your dumb a$$ back to nigeria BIOTCH!!
And correction, black people will never be fully respected in this country because of EUROPEANS, and the way America is mapped out. Thats just the way it is. You are not in the same category as a BLACK AMERICAN, the culture is COMPLETELY different, YOU all make yourselves look bad NOT US fool!

Americans (including the so called african americans/black americans) are racist as fucks!! I dont blame you its because you have allowed yourselves to be enslaved and ridiculed.
You play up to the stereotypes and then complain about that shit…You brought it on yourselves.
You are the ones that give ALL black people …Yes i mean all black races a bad name.
I suppose the process of “conditioning” which stems from the slavey period where we were made to believe anything remotely black is ugly i.e our nose, our lips, our hair. Its really sad…why is it when someone is ugly they are dark skinned, and dare I say have “BLACK FEATURES”.
When we are saying these girls are ugly then thats DEEP my people…Who is gonna love us if we cannot love ourselves.
This whole division thing is why we will never progress as a race…its a fucking joke.
SIGHS… (gets it off her chest)

It’s such a shame to see blacks beefin with each other, weather you are pure african or african-american you still black. There shud be solidarity, I mean c’mon we make ourselves look like fools infront of other races. We have been conditioned to thinking that which is our own is ugly and to be beautiful we have to look more european. These girls up there might not be the prettiest nigerians but they sure ain’t ugly, what I’m seeing here is true blackness and we all should embrace it and praise it ‘cos Black is beautiful weather american-black or african-black.

This is a UK competiton there will be no show to air. The large majority of these girls are British born so they may act like US AA women. It is a good idea but it has been hyped up into being like ANTM when it is not.
Still it is good for this competiton to be taking place. I don’t think all the girls are pretty though some are and some aren’t.

Good luck to them and the contestants. If you read through the rules, the about us and the terms and conditions you will see it is different from the format of ANTM and has nought to do with Tyra Banks.

I’m disappointed that this isn’t a television show.
If we ever do have a “Top Model” based in Africa, it will most likely be filmed in South Africa and may or may not include contestants from all over the continent.
It’s too bad because a Top Model show filmed in Britain comprised of all Nigerian contestants would be sooo drama-filled and entertaining.

I sooooo agree with #129 (but maybe not as harshly) I work with a whole slew of Nigerian women and they all have negative things to say about Americans and especially African Americans and OUR culture and I never could understand why they dislike it over here so much but they will marry and pay someone thousands just to get over here! Its bewildering to me! If you hate US and hate it here take your ass back to Africa! I apologize but I have been wanting to say that for the past 3 yrs…….Whew!
