OK, ENOUGH WITH THE HAIR SALON MOVIES…

poster_l.jpg

Because frankly, I can’t take no more.

I first heard about this movie via Fresh and shook my head. A couple of people emailed me about this film so, I guess I’ll just go ahead and spit out my opinion – no more ‘Beauty Shop’ remakes. Please, we already had ‘The Hair Show‘ and ‘Nora’s Hair Salon’. I think the world has fully grasp the concept of African American women in the beauty salon across the United States, so…what? Challenge yourselves Hollywood and come up with a better premise.

Here’s a quick movie lesson for you all – Did you know Vivica Fox’s ‘The Salon’ was suppose to be called BEAUTY SHOP? As a matter of fact, Hair Show and The Salon battled for the title but, Oscar nominated Queen Latifah got those rights.

Check out the trailer here if you can’t guess what this is about.

  5. oh please I am not gonna see no tired ass movie about a hair salon.

  6. M-Saw

i would never go see this remaded stuff. its pure trash

  7. Babycheif_Fl

I am sick and tired of all of these “salon” “hair show” movies.

How many beautician acting parts can Kym Whitley play? (she was in Deliver Us from Eva playing a beautician)

Is Terrance Howard playing a bad guy again? Go figure

I haven’t watched the trailer yet, but why do they always have to include the “Token White person” in the movie as a out of place character trying to fit into the black culture?

We as black people need to start doing better movies. Our culture is not just about hair, hip-hop, and pimping.

Stop it. Beauty Shop was better anyway.

  8. Reggie's Girl

I swear, Black movies are either about singing, dancing or playing some sport. Is that all we can do???

Vivica looks pretty in that pic though.

  9. Lusty

Garbage, Garbage, Garbage!!! The trailer is WACK!!!! This flick was shot a loooong time ago, but nobody is intrested. None of the salon movies were not good at all. Nora’s was THE WORST!!!! The Queens was the better one. This shit should be direct to DVD.

  10. CSUgirl

Vivica NO! NO NO NO! DAMN! Shouldnt she be doing films that will further her career?

  11. CSUgirl

This is a straight to DVD movie. I don’t know anybody that’s going to pay these movie theater prices to watch beauty shop/deliver us from eva/hair show/two can play that game movie again!

  12. Vivi better pray that this movie is a hit, after she lost that Caddy contract, which paid $1 million a year.

  13. lana

I love Darren,Terrence, and Monica but I don’t think I’m going to go and see this movie.

  14. I thought Terrance was looking for a role to define him. I guess any check is better than no check though.

  15. Greg Arious

I miss the days of movies like: Soul Food, The Best Man, The Wood, The Brothers etc… All those good ass Black movies that came out in the mid 90′s to early 2000′s that portrayed black people as regular ass American citizens. No gimmicks just real people.

  16. Greg Arious

Vivica needs to call it a career because she is doing the opposite of what you are supposed to do as you get older. She is regressing not progressing.

  17. andrea

oh wow gee. this movie is so not at all geared towards a black audience. black people are only concerned with chillin’ at ‘da hair shop. *rolls eyes*

  18. REVIVING THE CL CHAT!!

please can we come creativee already. as black screenwriter go they seem to be lacking let us pray for one with a gift of creativity no more hair salon, nail salon or project based killing thug ghetto movies

  19. Big Nellie

This movie was made more than two years ago (which explains why Terrance howard is in it, I would hope his career is further along that accepting a role like this.) Clearly it can’t be too good or have too much buzz if it is still yet to be released. Poor Vivica. I used to think she would what Halle was four years ago. Guess not.

  20. Woode29

Wow, I think the last movie Monica Calhoun was in was Gang Of Roses, not that it was worth watching..

  21. As if we don’t have a multitude of coontabulous films out already (especially in this genre). I feel like the only black films deemed “great” are either biopics, love drama’s w/ family reunions, or the infamous gang banging/hood movies~ sadly SMH.

  22. &….would any1 care to share w/ me why these producers ALWAYS feel the need to throw in an “OVERLY flaming” homosexual male & a “token white urbanized girl” into these films????

  23. Abigail_London_Girl

as if the 500 other black hair movies are not enough, people need 2 start sueing now lol

  24. Freaky Girlz

No Creativity- GIVE ME SOMETHING THATS NOT SOO STEROTYPICAL! …they need to try something new.

  25. I’m tired of : a) Hair salon movies, b) Big Mama type movies, c) Dancing ala You Got Serve movies, d) Stereotypical ala Soul Plane movies

  26. 90% of them have the same kind of poor concept, script and overly stereotypical jokes, and same actors playing the same types of roles. Always gotta have the loud always-horny man eating chick (KIM WITLEY, I KNOW YOU CAN DO BETTER THAN TO PLAY THE SAME OL’ ROLE), the overly effeminate gay brother, the playa or thug or pimp, the token white girl, the vicious old man, I mean what the f*ck? I already know how what’s gonna happen, how it’s gonna happen and how the movie will end. Before black hollywood starts complaining they need to step up their game, whether in comedy or drama.

  27. @ MISSENVIED, we’re on the same page.

  28. T

That short hair cut looks good on Vivica

  29. dhhoward02

Why are they making all of the black movies be centered around barbershops and hair salons. I feel like the African American community should stand up and change this fad that is going on. I believe this is why black actors and actresses options on the type of roles they are being offered are limited. What do you think?

  30. LilMamaKatz

umm.tha only hair salon movie i like this far is the barbershop.
    lol

  31. BAM BAM

This is obviously a picture that’s been on the shelf for awhile…Because that looks like the old cute-before-she-fucked-up-her-face Vivica.

They hardly ever make sophisticated black movies with complex characters because we don’t go to see them!!!!

This is the shit that sells!

I can’t remember the title, but there was a good independent movie that came out last year about a black woman whose family struggled within a poorly designed housing project (like what housing project isn’t poorly designed) and came up with an improved design and fought the city to have it built. This movie also included a plot about her white nemesis within the government whose family had their own struggles including a son who loved black culture and frequented the same housing projects.

I didn’t get a chance to see it in the theater, because it disappeared so fast due to lack of support. Does anybody remember the title of this movie? I’d like to put it in my Netflix queue.

Also, a good tip: This is very good thriller from the 90′s starring Dennis Haysbert called Suture. It should have been big, but again, it was considered “too intelligent and arty” for the mainstream black audience. Since when are movies too smart for us? I guess when we don’t support them. Hollywood does the math, you know. Anyway, here’s the link:

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108260/

  32. BAM BAM

Also, go to support black filmmaker Charles Burnett’s masterpiece, “Killer of Sheep”. As the link will explain, this is considered to be one of the most important films of the past 30 years. It is playing in independent venues across the nation. We should be supporting films like these along with the more mainstream black fare.

BECAUSE IT’S A SMALL INDEPENDENT FILM DOESN’T MEAN IT’S NOT AS GOOD OR AS FUNNY OR SCARIER THAN A BIG BUDGET MOVIE. MOST OF THE TIME, IT’S THE COMPLETE OPPOSITE.

Also check out the movie “George Washington”

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0262432/

  33. In regards to taking any movie role that comes their way even if it sucks (ie Nick Cage, Samuel L. Jackson), I see that Terrence Howard is doing the same thing!!

I would not pay to watch this movie. Hell I wouldn’t even watch a free bootleg copy of this shit.

  34. nate

@ 15 what did happen to the good black movies like waiting to exhale, love jones, eves bayou, soul food, etc. Back when black screenwriters were more creative. When the movies were good and funny and made you think. VIVCA should have done alot with her career after the Kill Bill movies, but she took 10 steps back! what the hell i was so happy for her when she got those movies.

ps i love the short hair on her tho.

  35. Why? I mean seriously? SMDH!!

  36. BAM BAM

    @24 MISENVIED

Because according to the Black Hair Salon Movie Charater Template, gay is the new coon/clown. The queen always gets the immediate laugh. It’s usually at “her” expense, though.

  37. PEOPLE CHECK YOUR LOCAL LISTINGS BECAUSE I’M SURE THIS ONE WILL BE GOING STRAIGHT TO BET! MOST LIKELY THIS FRIDAY AT 8!!!

  38. miss thang

wait, how old is this movie? that must be an “old” face of viv cause she has her old features. she looks nice, like the old vivica.

  39. risa

I saw this movie last year. It’s a complete rip off of Barber Shop. Don’t waste your time. **yawn** I don’t know why it has taken so long to surface/resurface.

  40. I SEE THEY HAVE A FEW OF THE USUAL LOW-BUDGET BET MOVIE ACTORS

    MONICA CALHOUN
    KIM WHITELY
    TARAL HICKS (SHE’S MOVING UP)

I DIDN’T KNOW STAN WAS STILL ALIVE

WHERE’S LISA RAYE,LARK VOORHIES, KADEEM HARDISON, MEL JACKSON, VANESSA WILLIAMS, VANESSA BELL CALLOWAY ETC….

  41. Same script, different cast. This needs to go straight to TBS.

Dammit Hollywierd, we as a people do a lot more than just hair.

Vivica looks good though, reminds me of her Set It Off days.

  42. BC

I totally support all of the Independent and low budget films. Does anybody remotely realize how hard it is to get a film green-lighted to the big screen! These dayz people don’t want to spend all that damn money anyways at the movies so DVD is a good look! Times have changed do your homework! Stop getting sick of Beauty Shop, Pimp and Gang bang movies because they aint going no where…lets just hope the shit is good.. As far as Vivica and her career…again I suggest people do there homework! Big Viv is not stopping anytime soon! You don’t have to be a young chicken to make that money! When you love what you do it doesnt matter if it’s big screen…low budget….theatre…or stage! GO Big VIV!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  43. Enveme

    Are you kidding me???

  44. satin

this had to have been done eons ago because vivica’s face no longer looks that good…that was the soul food face..she now has the micheal jackson death is a mystery face…lol

  45. woode29

#42 or anyone actually, what was the name of that show Kim Whitley and Vanessa BC had on BET? I totally forgot about Lark Vorhees, I wonder if she’s still a dime piece. She’s the only lady in my opinion that gave Stacey Dash any competiton as far as looks are concerned. But them SD Playboy pics are something serious.

  46. BAM BAM

    @#44 BC

    oooooookay……………

  47. BAM BAM

As I said, small films will be green-lighted when you SUPPORT them. BTW, here’s the homework: A lot of independent films are self-financed and submitted to key film festivals for bidding. If the film is good and/or promising with good buzz, a major

As I said, small films will be green-lighted when you SUPPORT them. BTW, here’s the homework: A lot of independent films are self-financed and submitted to key film festivals for bidding. If the film is good and/or promising with good buzz, a major studio will pick up the film for distribution, allowing for a suitable or wider release.

That’s where the support component factors in. If the gross is low on opening weekend, the film will most likely disappear in about three weeks time.

  49. H-Town Chic***

I’ll wait till it come out on DVD

  50. Ms. Lady

This movie is old…it’s pre-plastic surgery Vivica.

  51. Asentha

Looks typical and predictable, but I try to support most Black movies. I’ll probably check it out.

  52. I will not spend $10 at the movie theather to see this mess. It’s going straight to video anyways!

  53. Must be old…Terrence Howard would never show up in “this type” of movie, cuz he is Oscar worthy now.

  54. THA TRUTH

The movie looks like it’s made for STR8 to DVD or Cable.

The only good thing is: Vivica actually looks good for a change.

  55. WELL IM LOVING THE CAST AND IM GOING TO SUPPORT THIS MOVIE…

  56. Babycheif_Fl

#47 The show Kym Wyhitley and Vanessa Bell Calloway and that Sheryl woman had on BET was “Oh Drama”.

  57. Divakai

It sort of reminds me of a reverse barbershop! The concept seems almost the same, just its a beauty salon . They have had quite a few movies like this in recent years, so it would be nice to see something a lil different.I will say that Vivica Fox looks really nice with the short hairstryle:) It is becomign tiher face in this movie! Not sure how old this movie is,but she does look nice, more natural in this movie .
The cast appears to be very good aswell, but more likely than not Ill wait till it hits cable or dvd, and Ill watch it then!
