“STOP SNITCHIN’ ” FEATURE ON 60 MINUTES

Tuesday, April 24, 2007

Stop Snitchin’ - Part 1

On Sunday, ‘60 Minutes’ featured a report on how the hip-hop culture’s ‘Stop Snitchin’ campaign has played a huge role in the amount a unsolved murder cases in the country. One of the interviewees to speak with reporter Anderson Cooper was Cam’ron - who if you don’t remember, was shot at a nightclub in Washington D.C in 2005 and refused to cooperate with the police to find the shooter.

Cam’ron explained his reasoning for not snitchin’ was a violation of his ‘code of ethics’. This would also serve as a reason for others in Hip Hop and the Black community seeing as being a ’snitch’ makes one look like a sell out, could damage their street cred, or they can possibly become another unsolved murder case.

Part 2

What do you all think about this report and ’snitching’? Is it morally right to tell if you see a murder, or is it better to just mind your own business and protect yourself these days?

That’s a stupid code to live by and I would understand if the no snitch code was only used to protect you and your families’ lives but Cam is only using it to protect his street credibility which is just plain stupid. On top of that Cam’ron is a wack rapper, “Purple Haze” was awful and “Wet Wipes” had to be tha worst song I’ve ever heard. I actually think what 50 did was good he did what he had to do and he helped the police do some justice and that makes Cam look even worse than he already looks. But Dipset and G-Unit are both wack versions of Wu-Tang and they need to stop all these gangsta mess when neither of them can put together a solid group album.

I can understand if you witness a crime and choose not 2 “snitch” to protect yourself and your family! I come from an italian family and everything they have done hasn’t been completly honest it’s just the way i’ve been brought up 2 keep your mouth shut! But in some cases you should have to fess up as 2 what you witnessed! THERE IS NUTHIN WORSE THAN WATCHIN THE NEWS SEEING FAMILIES OF PEOPLE WHO WERE SHOT AND KILLED CRYING AND BEGGING SOMEBODY 2 COME FORWARD WITH INFO SO THAT THERE COULD BE SOME JUSTICE! So I think it depends on the situation thats just my opinion!

that Jeffrey Canada spoke so much sense. How come I’ve never heard of him before yet i can’t turn my tv/radio on without hearing Russell Simons/ Al Sharpton running their mouths on some ignorant ish. I’d like to see how the people on this blog who denied the responsibility of hip-hop for the objectifying of women, try and defend hip-hop now. These artists eg. Busta, Game & Cam’ron need to stop perpertrating such ignorance. But the problem the streets don’t understand is THEY ARE THE ONES WHO SUFFER FROM THE DON’T SNITCH POLICY, not these rappers who are loaded and come out to spit game but then run back to their gated beverly hills cribs. How much y’all wanna bet the minute a pussy like Cam’ron gets shot he will be running his girly ass mouth faster than Marion Jones. punk asses

i agree that some situations can be dealt with within the neighborhood because you cant just cross everybody with out running into some knuckles somewhere. but its the general distrust with law enforcement to hand out fair punishment that truly hinders cooperation.

you know that a black man convicted of killing another black man could quite possibly be seen on the streets again in less than ten. Now, if that same black man offs a man of “the european persuasion” we consider him lucky if he gets the possibility of parole.

but there is a line

and rape and muder are on the other side.

once again ignorance never ceases to amaze me! the community is only as powerful as the people. the real shame is when someone sees a murder, testifies, and is supposed to be in the witness program but comes up stanky. the police don’t give a damn and ur family is eating chicken and potatoe salad over ur body and the cops don’t give any funds to help bury your ass and then the murderer gets sentenced to 7 YEARS BUT ONLY SERVES 2! educate urself! so I guess u would be the ones to turn states witness on a drug conspiracy case and snitch yet you were the ones selling drugs for 12 years. the community should stand up don’t expect the police to protect or care in a murder case! as a group, snitch, not as one individual, protect the community as a whole and as it relates to the drug hustle, all u wanna be hustllers and rubber band men, stop snitchin ur a sell out u set up one man to get ur time suspended and he takes the weight for ur time and u prove nothing. then the white man suceeds lockin all u stupid asses up if u play the game be a real hustler, shut da fuck up and do ur 20 fed!

Granted, I am not from the “hood” and I didnt have to face the things that these kids (and adults) deal w/on a daily basis, but still……I just dont see how someone can witness someone else being murdered and not feel compelled to do or say something…..and I am not even talking about it being a civic duty….I am talking about from a moral standpoint, my mind and body both would be at such a state of un-rest. Was Camron the only rapper available…I mean for the sake of all black folks, dude needs to never say anything in a public forum.

Look i’m from the hood, and let me break down wat is i think. The whole not talking to the police was started in black communities in the recent past because it was a known fact the police were corrupt and racist. So of course you can’t trust them to uphold justice. The difference was, back then, groups like the black panthers and others policed there own neighborhoods and took care of their own. Over the last two decades, we stopped policing our neighborhoods, as drugs pretty much ravaged the hoods acrossed America. So when illegal activites became prevalent, and its a every man for himself grind, nobody cares about their neighbor, so why would we police our neighborhood. The problem is dat we kept the same distrust of the cops, and while it is warranted, it hurts us more than helps us. So if for example a serial killer does live next door to us, we don’t snitch to police, and we don’t take care of it ourselves, cuz remember we don’t care, so basically we have let criminals run our hoods and then we wonder why we can’t come up. There are no parameters put on the no snitching thing, if a guy is selling weed of course we don’t tell, but c’mon if a guy is just raping kids, does no snitching still apply. And in some hoods, you can can get local goons to handle situations like dat, but they won’t do it for nothing, so once again bleeding their own people. We hate when ppl say all black ppl are criminals, but when we do shit like dis, to the world, dat is exactly wat we look like. I’m a logical human being and i understand the game, and I think if we ain’t gonna ever trust the police, we need to implement our own police, and get some shit in the hood straightened out.

In England those who give infomation to the police are called ‘grasses’.

It’s all about the code of the street. As far as i’m concerned there’s to many young black kids being killed and this wall of silence is seriously preventing justice being done. If anything it adds to more violence. People who think they can stab or shot another and get away with it only go on doing it until they’re either stabbed or killed themselves. It’s just a never ending circle. And all it does is deplete the black race further.

If someone attemps to take or takes another life don’t hesitate to help the police capture the purpetrator.

Anyone one who thinks helping the police is not gangster is talking out of there arse.

It’s our duty to stop the violence!

30. datdude: Good Morning, you have raised a valid point. I wish the reporter would have asked Cam’ron this:

“So if a serial killer does live next door to you, you don’t snitch to police, but if you know for a fact that a guy on your street just raped a little girl, does no snitching still apply?”

I wonder how he would have answered that, because I know Cam has children.

It’s killing the community. Hip hop didn’t start it but it promotes it now to the mainstream. Those kids’ parents, where are they? If those kids come from the streets, a lot of their parents are fucked up themselves (let’s face it, that’s why these kids need mentors like the man being interviewed) and probably live by the “no snitching” rule. I don’t understand how people can live by a rule without questionning it first, the girl is saying she does it “because that’s the rules”?? That’s not an answer. Tell me WHY you follow this rule, “just because” doesn’t count.

No, they should have asked Cam’ron “if your child was raped by someone and a witness didn’t want to cooperate with the police to find out who your child’s rapist is, would you be cool with that?”.

Busta Rhymes, I don’t understand him. How can you call yourself a friend and not testify for your friend? The man was married with 3 kids, trying to start doing the right thing and change his life. I’ve boycotted LIL KIM’s show, I just boycott BET anyway.

When will all of this end my people? We’re killing each other and on top of that, who’s getting most of this money? Who owns BET and Major Labels? People need to wake up.

It’s sad that we continue to allow the voices of the village idiots to ring louder than the voices of the village intellects. Cam’ron and people like him are a total waste of space. They do nothing to make our community or world better. When you can rationalize not bringing to justice the murderer of someone you know, how can you continue to call yourself a man. How can you look your mother in the eyes? How can you look yourself in the mirror? I hope Cam’ron shamed his mother, by making the statement that this is how he was raised. The irony of claiming that snitching would negatively effect their record sales is laughable. They want the respect of murderers, drug dealers, thieves and rapist. Real gangstas and other delinquints don’t even go into record stores, and the certainly don’t buy their music off the internet. They buy their music bootleg….which hurts the rapper’s record sales. But who am I to question the logic of idiots?

If you don’t want to talk to the police about a crime that you witnessed then you don’t get to complain that the police aren’t doing anything. The police can only do so much on their own. They rely on the community to help them in certain cases…especially if there are witnesses. If they can’t catch a killer or drug dealer because of this stupid No Snitching code of ethics then oh well. I just don’t want to see anyone’s family complaining about the cops when it’s the people on the street who are preventing the cops from doing their jobs.

Not snitching to protect your street cred is indeed ignorant. However, if I saw something I probably wouldn’t tell it either, just because cops are so dirty, and all they do is tell the witness what they wanna hear in order to crack their case. Then they don’t give two sh*ts about the witness. Have you ever watched First 48? It’s a shame the way those cops exploit the witnesses, all for the sake of the case. They tell them they’ll protect them, blah blah blah, but how much are you really protecting them when they’re on national t.v., telling how this murder went down? If I know somebody from around the way, them having their face blurred out is not going to stop me from recognizing them by the rest of their body, and their voice. Cops are dirty, and a lot of them can’t be trusted. I sure wouldn’t put my life in their hands…………….

This is why there are so many unresolved murders and other crimes in the black community. Our families deserve closure and arrests need to be made to catch these criminals. People are quick to bring up Tupac and Biggie’s unresolved murders, but don’t give much thought to the woman whose son was murdered, or the father whose child was hit by a stray bullet and no one knows or saw anything.

I’ve never been a Camron or Dipset fan, and his comments made him look extra ignorant and unfortunately other people will start to believe that all of us feel this way.

Let’s say your child was a victim of a hit and run and lay dead in the street. There was a group of people on the corner who saw the car and driver and approached you to tell you what they saw and when the police arrived they said nothing……HOW WOULD YOU FEEL?

MAD AS HELL…..thats how I felt when our apartment was broken into and a lot of our music, clothes and electronics were stolen in broad daylight one afternoon. We’re asking the people downstairs and across the hall if they saw anything, and a lady said she “heard someone up there, and saw someone dragging bags down the stairs and out the building”. When the cops got there she stood there looking fucking stupid and told them she didn’t see or hear anything. I hope she’ll never forget the look I gave her as my roomates and I stood there crying.

You might overlook someone who opens their car door and hits another car, but MURDER…..come on.

All I’m saying is think of the victims and stop protecting the criminals.

See, it ain’t white people who fukk up the black community - it’s the ignorance of black folk who perpetuate MORE ignorance, and unfortunately, there are a LOT of people out there who don’t have anyone TELLING them that she-it like this is what truly destroys us as a community - no, instead of teaching black children responsibility to themselves and to the communities in which they live, we’re teaching them that if you SEE your best friend’s mother get shot down - turn your head and act like you didn’t.

And unfortunately, there are mf’s who see she-it happen to their VERY own family members or loved ones and they STILL act like it didn’t happen - held captive within your own community, I’m embarrassed FOR us.

Look at Lil Kim, this dumb beyotch did a YEAR in jail, cause she wanted to prove to a mf that she was a “down azz beyotch”… well guess what, Lil’la Kim - you’re a DUMB azz beyotch; who was living a lifestyle that many of us can only dream of, education, mansions, cars, NO financial worries, no worries about your house being robbed or not being able to walk to your car at 10pm, access to any and everything you desire - and you mean to tell me that you already HAVE what many of us DREAM of one day achieving and you damn near throw it away, cause you still want to be on some PROJECT she-it?

I’m disgusted… talk amongst yourselves.

The no snitching code is just out of control. I hate it, but the consequences of snitching are really crazy. So let’s say you tell, what happens next? The Police claim that you can be anonymous when you report something, but what if your anonymous tip is the only thing they have? They can’t do anything. What happens if you decide to go see the Police and then they ask you to testify? You’re ass is grass because of part of the sixth amendment that say “the accused has the right to confront the witness”. Who knows who is sitting in that court room that might follow you home or something. The fear behind this from a “snitcher’s” perspective is just crazy. I think it is even worse for those who are in poverty because they have nowhere else to turn because they have to keep their mouths shut. I live in the hood, and I don’t care if someone is telling me not to snitch. If somebody gets murked, I’m not having that on my conscience. I’m snitching, and if I get killed because of it, so be it. The people who did it will get theirs one way or another.

@#62 Carrington In Houston

Gotta agree with you on those points. WE are the ones who fuk it up for US!! I understand all that “Po-lice is dirty” and shyt but REALLY, now, when do we as poeple stand up to our OWN, a lot of which perpetuate a contant state of fear in our hoods?

Who are you more afraid of? The po-lice or the crakman retaliating against you? And please don’t tell me the police, because statistically speaking, if you live in the hood you are more likely to be a victim of black on black crime than being shot by the police (I expect some shyt on this point but there it is). How can I say this, you say? I live in Bed Stuy, my eyes are open and THE LIGHTS ARE ON!

This is not to say that the system is not phucked up, or that the cops do a good job of protecting witnesses. We have to stand up and demand better treatment! But how can we do that when we’re sending a signal that we don’t care about reporting crimes. I think that reflects back on us in terms of the system. When we refused to sit at the back of the bus, we got some damn RESPECT, didn’t we?

I think we’ve fallen into a state of complacency when it comes to fighting the good fight. Now that fight is not only with “THE SYSTEM”, it’s also within our own infrastructure. We gotta clean up our own shyt and check our inventory. You can be sure that white people do.

Where I live, there are many whites moving in and gentrifying the hood. They form their own “neighborhood blogs”, which I read on regular basis, and you can be damn sure they chronicle every crime, go to community board meetings, communicate with the police, and they don’t show no damn fear of reporting things that are going down.

Yeah you might say that the cops respect them more because they’re white, or that they’re part of the conspiracy, but how come the thugs don’t retaliate against them, but will put a bullet in yo blak ass if you open YOUR mouth? Could it be because our own people consider themselves more disposable than whites? So many Catch -22’s here, but that’s my 2 centz.

Unless we’ve been in that situation I think it’s easy for us to say it’s stupid but for someone who lives in that type of environment it’s not so easy. We need to realize that every person isn’t as strong and we feel they should be so things that we think is common sense to us may not be common sense to them. It would be nice if everyone had the attitude that they’re going to stand up for justice and what’s right but if you have someone who’s genuinely afraid of what could happen to them or their family what do you do? I can only say what I think I’d do in that situation because I haven’t lived it. If you saw someone get killed and you knew for a fact if you went to the police that they would come after you and your family what would you do? Especially if your family was begging you not to say anything because they knew everyone’s life was on the line would you still go to the police and face the consequences? It’s hard watching a family go through something like that but when you realize it could be you next what do you do? Your whole family could be killed beccause of something you said because in the end you are the one that has to live with the decision you made. Is it easier for you to live with knowing you helped solve a murder and gave someone’s family peace of mind or is it easier knowing that you could’ve possibly saved your whole family’s life by not saying anything?

SPICY SEAFOOD GUMBO

@ # 47 – I agree with you completely. I only saw snippets of this show, but I was completely baffled that rappers condoned this “no snitchin” policy. And the timing was impeccable! They aired this mess about the “code of the streets” amidst all of the other scrutiny hip-hop is taking because of the Imus incident. Hip-hop is under attack! And because of this interview, Camron & Busta have truly proven what morons are in this industry. THIS is why hip-hop is viewed so negatively! Rappers promote violence and when given the opportunity to voice their point of view so that perhaps they can be seen in a positive light, these geniuses go on National Television to now say, “F*CK the pigs! Stop snitchin’ so they can’t solve these murders in our black communities!”
Last month I witnessed an armed robbery. My boyfriend and I were in his car and the robbery happened on a street corner in Los Angeles. These two black guys robbed this defenseless pedestrian who was Hispanic. I couldn’t believe that they just walked up on him and straight jacked him by gunpoint. They took the guys wallet and cell phone and then they let him go. I could not believe what I had just witnessed! My boyfriend saw it too, but he REFUSED to call the police. I wanted him to pull over so that I could use the phone and call the cops, but HE also believes in this “no snitchin” crap. He told me I was not getting involved because that was none of my business. He also said that he didn’t want me to testify against the perpetrators, so why even call the cops? I was so angry with him, I asked him to pull over so that I could collect my thoughts and calm down. I wanted to call the cops so badly and report the crime because something similar happened to my brother. He was robbed and beaten by 10 guys and there were witnesses but no one SAID ANYTHING! People actually watched as he was brutally beaten. I mean, even if you didn’t want to get involved, you could simply call the cops so that they could get to the scene of the crime.
Bottom line is there is a fine line to being a snitch. Of course, no one tattles when you see someone stealing out of a store, but when it comes to MURDER, why be silent? For all of you on this blog who think that being cooperative with the cops is unacceptable, what would happen if your mother was murdered? You would be the first person RUNNING to the TV stations to record your plea for someone to come forward to help the cops with their investigation for the murder of your mother, or wife, or sister, or brother, or child! Since when does assisting the cops with an unsolved murder “not cool”? Some people on this post have mentioned fear of retaliation from the person who was caught because of a snitcher. I think those instances are very few. Truth be told, there are far more murders that are solved by witnesses who had NO retaliatory action taken against them for cooperating with the cops. Most witnesses for homicide cases are never murdered or even attacked for testifying against the culprit. Once people really see the ratio, I think that can change the community’s perception of people being seriously hurt or executed because they were “snitches”.

Everything we have we fought for has come from someone taking action, change does not come by sittin on ur ass, if u have a problem black people, stick together, sand for what u believe in. Every other culture knows how to stick together. Frederick Douglass Harriet Tubman and Martin Luther King Jr. didnt accomplish great things for us by watching YOU TUBE and giving their opinion, they took action they stood for what they believed in and did what they had to do, which meant SACRAFICING their life for what they felt was right. Sure enough they thought I was just talking and some of them broke into one of my neighbors garage…
That next day WE (me and my boyz that grew up together in the hood) BUST some heads, Burned some cars and Shot up some crack houses… Guess What, THESE same assholes went to the cops!!!

The cops lauhged in their face and these CLOWNS got the fuck on with their life to another area FAR AWAY from us!!!

———————————————
Everytime I get in a discussion about the current state of Black America, this is the one point that I make! COMPLACENCY will be the death of us. The fight that we used to have in us had died down. Just because we aren’t getting sprayed in the streets with water hoses and because we are allowed to eat inside the same restaurant, attend the same schools and drink from the same water fountains, we think that there’s nothing to fight for. We are so comfortable in the facade of equality that we have been given, that we’ve lost our drive to want better and to seek better. When in fact, true equality has yet to be reached. We’ve got a long way to go. Since the Civil Rights movement of the ’60s, we’ve gotten sidetracked in our new found freedom and equality, and instead of continuing to fight the system, we’ve become involved in the in-fighting of drugs and gang violence. We’ve diverted our attention from the true goal, and money and material things have become all that matter. People fought and died for rights that should have been there’s merely because they existed, and now we kill each other, and think that it’s not our problem? We have some SERIOUS work to do!!!

It’s strange that for all the strengths we have have, it’s our weaknesses that are at the forefront right now. But that’s a temporary thing. As for “bitch”, I think a clearer referendum would be on HOW that word is used in the arts, and not an outright ban. That’s the only word that can used in more than one way.

I’m not for censorship, but I am all for public responsibility.

And what really bothers me is the almost total silence in our community on the travesty that was Hurricane Katrina. PLEASE RENT WHEN THE LEVEES BROKE AND WATCH ALL 3 DISCS. I PROMISE IT’LL START A RIGHTEOUS FIRE IN YOUR SOUL THAT WON’T SOON GO OUT.

They had an opportunity to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Hip-Hop; they chose not to - VH1 picked up the show. They had an opportunity to show we blacks CREATED country - but they dropped the ball again - CMT did it. But yet, they can do a “reality” series about Li’l Kim before she goes to the slammer because she wouldn’t reveal her accomplices.

And yet, after reading the comments on this board, I wonder where most of you stand. There was a crime committed in Sacramento where I might have seen who did it because they were in my area when I was at the convenience store picking up a little food for an all-night writing session. I was interviewed by the local news media when I found out that the crime ACTUALLY happened, and I told the reporter I might have witness the killers before they did it. I went to the police and they are investigating leads and have made one arrest.

Am I afraid of them coming after me? No. Because I have been living in my area long before these wanna-be thugsters started migrating in my neighborhood. If they wanted to get me, they would have got me by now. We can complain about rappers telling about us not to snitch and don’t do anything when the crime is committed, and the report brought home one big point why most of us don’t tell the police: they’ve been using holding tactics like the kind they used for the War on Drugs.

BET has NOT DONE any reporting on situations like this. This isn’t a case about white media being scared of rap…this points out that WE AS A PEOPLE ARE because WE LET IT GET OUT OF CONTROL. We got offended when Don Imus called the Rutgers Women’s Basketball Team “nappy headed hos” but didn’t say crap for 20 years when he was offending everybody or even when hip-hop was demeaning women, particularly Black women. We got upset over Michael Richard’s use of the “N-word” but haven’t don’t anything to educate people about the true meaning of the word.

We can bitch, gripe and moan about the white media when they take on black terms/lexicons, but we do nothing when they point it out to us. Unless we as a people stand up and take our neighborhoods back, then we’ve fallen victim to the rappers who do this “stop snitchin’” crap. Because Cam’Ron’s attack on 50Cent cooperating with the police is bullshit because he chose not to for his ’street cred’. Because Busta Rhymes said nothin’ about his bodyguard being gunned down is bullshit because he wanted to protect his ’street cred’. People it goes FAR BEYOND street cred, we’re the only people killing ourselves or getting killed over dumb shit.

this is absolutely ridiculous. its a shame we do this to ourselves. i hope more people begin to use common sense and start to think for themselves. countless crimes will continue to happen unless more people begin to do better, think for themselves, and consider how their actions effect their community.

I dont necessarily agree that you should report every crime you witness to the police. Sorry, but some people live in neighborhoods where there is virtually no police protection, and to report a crime to the police is to give your life for the one murdered, cause when its found out you told, there are serious reprocussions.

But on the other hand, i think this has snowballed into what we have today; so many unsolved murders, rapes, assaults, robberies, and home invasions in our communities that will never result in justice.

The police on the other hand has very much contributed to this problem. Can’t blame it all on rap and hip hop. The police have never really protected blacks, hispanics, and lower income areas as they do where the rich and middle class live. They could careless about the poor and whether or not they get justice. They dont even put the energy in to solving the murder, and depend solely on someone coming forward, and instead of doing real police work, if someone dont come forward, they use this as an excuse to toss the case in the garbage. And everybody knows that there are alot of corrupt police officers, and when you are reporting a damn crime, you never know which type of officer you are talking to. So many officers are in these drug dealers pockets while you are calling to report there is a crack house across the street from you. It’s just a catch 22, damn if you do, and damn if you dont.

I just hate that the media is trying to make this a hip hop/ rap phenomen issue, and it’s more of a officer/law enforcement and community relationship issue. Throughout the years, criminal justice system has mistreated the inner-city urban population, and yet they want the trust of the same people. Well that trust has to be rebuilt, and until then, with no police protection, no one is going to be reporting anything.

Caramel 2, i agree completley! i’m so tired of us complaining that we are recieving unfair treatment and harassment… i mean, obviously, we have, we’re a strong people (civil rights proved that.. ..coming over here on the boat proved it!). but at the same time, in our generation.. we are causing it. its a catch 22, they keep promoting this stupid “invincible, F&*& the police and everyone else, i’m gonna get mine, money hungry “image, and then when these rappers get called out on it.. they’re quick to scream “not fair” ! Cam is an idiot, i cant say i understand this code of no snitchin, i grew up in the ‘burbs, and i still dont really trust or care much for the police(they are crooked) so i wont act like i know what it means. BUT i do know this is only hurting our future generation.. i mean our generation of grown folks is pretty much set in our ways ( you can change.. but you have to want to) but that makes it even more Cruical for us to teach the young ones, instead of letting them grow up on the words of rappers like Cam who will be gone next year, (broke probably) our young black kids will still be hanging on his every word. We need to wake up yall! We are the most influential group of people, what we say is cool, goes in the history books, so why dont we put it to good use!?! yea “snitcin” may go on in other communities, but it seems we are the only ones that get caught up in this mess as a way of life, while other races grow out of it,and become lawyers and doctors, our kids are busy barely getting by and being killed, living by the “stop snitchin” code and by these rappers lyrics… who dont probably care anything about them.

why did it take something like 60 mintues for someone as wise as Mr. Canada to get any recognition, someone who is actually saying something with substance!!

damnedit, Cam! that was the most ignorant crap you could have came out of your mouth with. Why did they even pick you to interview? You know the whole don’t snitch thing orgininated from black people who were trying to evade oppression. People escaping from slavery. People teaching others or learning to read. People running voter registration centers. People trying to avoid violent racist “police” those “overseers” of the civil rights era. It had nothing to do w/ perpetuating criminal activity in our neighborhoods, YOU INGONRANT S.O.B.! That’s the dumbest shyt ever. And how dare you Cam how dare you have the audacity to go on 60 MINUTES in character - you jerk! Why don’t these rappers come up outta their f’d up alter egos sometimes. Boi - you ain’t Killa Cam! You’re Cameron Giles. You don’t see Halle Berry walking around everywhere trying to pretend she’s Storm from x-men. going on news programs w/ a white wig on. Get a life - a real one. All these rappers - why are we as a people behaving as if Snoop Dogg is anything more than a character that Calvin Broadus plays on TV. The same for .50, and Busta etc, etc, etc. Grow up. These dudes wouldn’t have ANYTHING if they were really like the characters they play. They are as real a cartoon characters. How do you think these dudes live everyday. Feeding their kids, getting them ready for bed and school, being in relationships, fycking paying the electric bill and making sure it’s groceries in the house. Gotdamned people! get a grip. Get off this “no snitching” bull shyt!

@ OL’SCHOOLER - you’re right. It’s a bytch that turns his boy in to get time off his sentence. But what has that got to do w/ a murder? A f’ing serial killer next door? NOTHING. I’d like to crush my fist in Cam’s jaw. And I bet he’d tell that ish in a hurry - and I’m a girl.

Stop saying “yes but we’re not the only ones doing this” F*CK THAT! If an obese person wanna lose weight to be healthy but keeps comparing himself to other fat people and saying “well I’m not the only one” he will NOT solve his problem, and will end up having tons of health problems and die too soon!

Not all of us stay in predominantly black communities. (though I do).

Bullets have no eyes, therefore they know no color. Whites & every other race are keeping killers in the streets, too..because of this same code. These are the same streets we walk on too.

So the key is pulling together AS A WHOLE. It starts with cops…THEY are the reason why people are scared to open their mouths. They do a suck ass job of protecting people.

@115 BigSingh

You are indeed a remarkable person. Understand that everyone cannot do what you did because of the violence that can come out of retaliation for going to the police for reporting a crime. Sometimes things can be taken out of context in what you say to the news or the media.
However I think that if you are going to have one of our people represent us on a forum that it is someone that is credible to speak for our people. Why couldn’t 60 minutes ask Chuck D or KRS1 to appear?
You know why? Because they would’ve broke it down and made them look ridiculious. Understand all of this is happening because this ignorant racist is coming out and saying he said what he said because of the rappers. Why are we allowing this. Yes we should change the way we are portrayed and the lyrics in our music but don’t get it twisted. They are making it seem like it should be ok because we say these things. Wise up people and see the bigger picture.

I think that it all just depends on the situation and the crime. There is a thin line and it’s definitely a two way street. But since they put us on blast, when are they going to put the police on blast for the codes that they follow to protect their own??? What about these dirty azz politicians who lie and cover for each other at the cost of innocent lives being lost in foreign lands due to illegitimate wars and other causes that the public may or may not be privy to?

For all of those who are willing to give their lives for justice (so you say on the blog): Kudos. But no amount of justice is going to bring your loved one back. Death is something we all have to deal with and there’s no use in me losing my life, too over someone’s elses death. I mean honestly, would those of you who are willing to lie down your lives for justice honestly want you family to go the police in the event of your murder IF it meant risking their own lives??? I mean for what?? At the end of the day the victim is still dead and your @ss could be next. God’s sees everything anyway, and please believe He will settle the score.

I noticed that even though they said something about no witnesses coming to tell about how Pac got murdered, they failed to mention
there was a guy that was going to tell the police who he saw do it and he ended up getting MURDERED his self.

If the shooter in D.C. wouldn’t have missed, than we could have rid the world of the stupidity that is CAMERON GILES!

You see I’m really confused because after watching the video and reading what most of you have to say, I dont know what to do?!! I mean I agree with the ones who are talkin about ” If you saw your child get raped would you tell who did it?!” but I ALSO agree with the people from the hood like Bill. I mean he makes a great point too! It’s bad enough one person gets murdered, then you, your crew, ya whole family gets in on the whole action. And everyday you wake up youre gonna think about trying to avoid the friends of the person who raped ya child. But like I said before… it ALLLL ties back into the part about tellin who raped your child or not! Theres REALLY no way out of this situation. wooo this REALLY makes us look bad. Just like the Imus thing… black people get so worked up over him calling black girls ” nappy headed hoes” and saying something about Spike Lee. Thats not RACIST! Just because a white man said it to a black girl makes it over the top racist. But black guys call women that EVERY flippin day! They do it in schools. At home. In rap videos. Everywhere!I’ve been called a hoe by someone of a different race but no one sees me broadcasting it! and the “nappy headed” part def. aint racist. That’s just being mean. Not all black people have hair like that… and if you do…honey you got perms, relaxers,GREASE lol, all types of chemicals. I mean I hope I’m making a lil point maybe.

What the hell is this “snitching” stuff about. All of these “grown ass” advocating not “snitching” are irresponsible & childish. The adult thing would be giving up the information. That street BS is crazy. Living that lifestyle will only hurt those around you & put you in an early grave!

first of all this is not a true perception or representation of my people. most people do not talk or cooperate with the police because of a lack of protection. when you testify against a criminal your name, and whole life story will be in the court documents and once the system is done with you for them its over. but you have to go home and constantly watch your back. look at the family whose house was firebombed for assisting the police..if they protect us like they do the elite then they may get more cooperation.

secondly, get to the root of the problem. the whole not trust the police started or talk to the police started from racism. When there were no black officers and the white officers were racists and hateful. so come on people why let the media do this to us. when the truth is this code is for people in the streets handling street business. growing up in the hood my understanding of no snitching meant not telling on thugs doing their thug thing. we all know this does not apply to crimes like rape and abuse. we need to stop allowing the media paint these pictures of us.

This is the first time I have ever seen Cooper get something wrong. He makes it seem like Snitching is exclusive to the African American Community. When in actuality, it is reflected in the Italian, Hispanic and Asian community just as prominently.

Stop Snitchin is pure ingnorance at it’s best. No dispute. But in truth, it is also a survivial technique used in part by persons who fear retaliation and get no protection from the police. Particuarly those who live the street life.

Shame on Cooper for giving this “news” story his own personal slant.

This is some real sh**. What half the people in the black community dont understand is these so called rappers who grew up in the hood dont give two SH**S about you. Some of yall are the same ones who are easily influenced by every little thing a rapper say or does, yall causing it to infilter and poison our damn communities. What the f**k is going on these days???!!! So you telling me you care more about your street cred or buisness than some person’s life. Are you trying to tell me if witnessed somebody get brutally raped or killed or robbed, you wouldnt come forward so that the coward who committed the crime be brought forward to justice.
Another thing is, young black people especially young black men, are so easily influnced that they follow what they hear or think is “cool” or “down” on radio and tv. Most of these rappers who glorify the hood dont even know what the f**k the hood is about. They dont know the pain, agony,or struggle each and everyday we face. All them fake ass rappers and big wig cooperations want to do is profit off your dumb asses and you easily fell into the trap. How you gonna let some rapper tell yuo the rules and codes of the streets when they dont even live there. You stuck in a hell called the ghetto and their asses f***ing living large in some private gated community with 1292292 cars in their garage and some huge fancy ass house. Smh, cant believe them dumb ass kids went on that show and the girl said its a rule not to snitch. Young girl, if you seen your momma get shot, would you blow your horn then, young boy if you witnessed your best friend get stabbed to death, would you toot your horn then to the police.
Im outraged at Camron’s ignant ass. But what do expect from some idiot. I hope what ever serial killer that is living next to his ass, kills his as, somebody witness the sh** and doesnt snitch like he preaches in his songs. I dont mean to wish something like that somebody, but knowing you got fools like him living in your neighborhoods, makes me wish sh** like that. One day young and old folks will get weary of the nonsense and take action. I know damn well if witnessed a murder, a robbery or rape, my ass is going to “SNITCH”.

Love,Peace,&&Honeyy

This is to funny to me! So let me get this right ,I can’t tell on John Doe cause he sells a little weed here and there in the hood, or the dope boys on the corner, but let John Doe go around the hood raping little girls , and all hell breaks loose. How is it fine for one but not the other, Its like your picking who is not serious (a little weed, crack) or a person raping little girls. I bet any parent(mother/father) who’s little girl gets rape in the hood , would not be like ”am not stop snitchin let it ride”? Black people live in fear. So you snitch on Dope boy, he finds you , kills you ,no one tells. Now your dead. Now you want your family to just let it ride? Black people are so lost. Ask some person in prison about all this Stop snitchin stuff, I bet a lot of heads would turn then. How many men/women behind bars, wishing they could be free on the outside, living life daily. In prison cause of some street credit. Put me down any day am a snitch for life, please believe it believe it please. If I see you in a crime, am going to the police , pointing you out. Then am going home. Your going to jail because you did a crime. So I should go to jail for not telling on you. insert-LIL KIM- Am done venting , please out !

3 Points to Make…

#1. Police offers who work the “hood” are sometimes just as corrupt as the thugs or better yet working with the thugs. Stop snitching didn’t come out of thin air, black people have never trusted the police.

#2. Maybe of Police Officers treated people in the “inner city” with more respect and became partners in the community they could build trust ant get more information. There are many neighborhoods where these police/community policing models have worked, but they take open minds on both sides.

#3. I know hip hop is out of control, but it did not single handely create all the problems in the black community. It’s only 30 years old. Don’t forget the good old days when police officers where hosing children down with water hoses and turning dogs loose on black men and woman!

#4. I’m gonna have to ask the mainstream media to stop using wack ass rappers as the voice of hip hop. This is getting out of hand.

#5. Cameron’s and ass. Hands down, a pink boa wearing ass.

I actually used to work with an older BLACK man whose son was murdered by Jeffery Domer (I think I spelled it right) years ago. So Cam’s logic about not snitching on a serial killer (or any killer) for that matter is WHACK!!! You cannot tell me if he knew someone that murdered a family member of his that he wouldn’t tell. But I can also see it from the other side. My brother was murdered in 2002. The only reason his killer turned himself in was because he was in fear for his life on the streets. He decided he’d rather be in prison than suffer the “street justice” that he was SO QUICK to deal out. Go figure…..

P.S. He got 20 but I’m sure he’ll serve 10 or less.

It’s strange how no one mentioned how Whites committed many acts of terror (cross burning, fire bombs, lynching, random killings) against Blacks, in Mobs mind you, yet NONE of them snitched on each other! Did anyone from these mobs tell on the others or did they give witness accounts to police? Now how is it that the “Stop/No Snitching” philosophy is the Hip Hop or the Black Community’s fault? History tells me otherwise!

And I want to give my personal story:

I’ve witnessed 3 horrible events. I had no intentions of running to some cops to tell what I witnessed. Why? Because it’s possible that I may be sent to an early grave or my family and close friends may be next just to send me a message. Why doesn’t anyone understand that this is two fold?

And before someone mentions the Witness Protection program, I know 3 people (a mother and her kids) who got killed while in it!

Please don’t forget that the witnesses have much more on their shoulders than you can imagine. In one hand, you want that person off the streets but in the other, you want your life. These are the options you have and I’m pretty sure, you will choose your life over death!

Honestyl, I don’t understand why people still continue to say that snitchin is the right thing to do. I guess people who have no real understanding of how the streets work would have that opinion. Let’s say that you do snitch on somebody that did something criminal towards you and that person gets sentenced. You’re probably thinking that its the end of that story but i promise you its not. Because more than likely the criminal’s friends and family will come after you and everybody you love because they wanna see you hurtin in these streets. It aint no love out here. You basically gotta look out for yo’self and yo family cuz the next person is just waitin on the opportunity to come up in these streets. And no, you dont have to be from harlem to understand that shit. Shit, thats every hood in america that it happens. And as far as closure goes, life goes on, snitchin won’t bring that person back. Hell you liable to wind up dead wit em.

They don’t understand….

People live in their own little fog, and they think that once they report something to the police, the Police is going to insure their safety…

People are very naive about the police..The Police are just looking to close cases, and make sure the statitics look good on paper, so they will continue to have a job…….

Well, I’ve read a few of the comments. I can understand all of your views. But all I can say is unless you’ve had it happen to you (i.e. a family member murdered), it’s hard to understand and empathize. I don’t understand how helping your fellow man (not the police, but your fellow man….) turned into snitching.

I’m sure the KKK is jumping for joy about this one. I’m sure conversations in the celebration are going like this, “Damn not only do they kill one another for us but they also let the killers stay out on the streets to possibly kill again!”. Why must we as a people with the most dominant gene pool continue to make fools of ourselves?!? The closest thing we have had to a revolution or change (revolution is too loaded a word for some) in our thought process as a community was sparked by a crazy old white man (Imus) with way too much power and way too little intellegence. Why is it that we don’t demand respect proactively (or before people like Imus think it’s cool to degrade women and falsely patronize black people)?!? I have been seeing fools in ATL wearing those “Stop Snitchin” and “Sntiches Get Stitches” T-shirts since 2004 and have yet to make sense of it. Half of the fools that buy into this kinda thing don’t even involve themselves in anything worth snitching on they are just hype men, P.R. agents, and flunkies for ignorance movements that are continually destroying our community from the core!

@bill
you’re right, many of us don’t understand. the root thing I don’t understand is all this mention of “the streets” as if it’s some mystical place. you know what - the shytty neighborhood I grew up in has a lot of these “rule” people are talking about. But When you walk over to the next “street” the rules change. I’m not disrepecting the position of the person who keeps his/her mouth shut for fear of the lives or their loved ones but what I am saying is that black people need to realize/ rememeber that the world is bigger than the block you live on. All this don’t snitch stuff isn’t helping us. They don’t even have to try to confine us to the ghetto - we do it. then we kill each other. and not only do we forgo the justice system. we don’t police our own either.

I’m sorry, but White America and those boogie black folks who lived in suburbia all their lives don’t know what it’s like to lose a family member or a friend after they chose to cooperate with the cops, and while they were SUPPOSED to be under witness protectiion. I’m from New Orleans, and a lesson learned EARLY is to see and don’t see. Almost every person who chose to “snitch” was killed. Of course we want to help fight crime, but unless law enforcement comes up with a foolproof way to protect those who wish to help them, no one will come forward to testify in court. I mean, why lose YOUR life over someone who don’t give a damn about you anyway?

I JUST DON’T GET IT! solving murders is now a bad thing??? These “gangstas” need to check their morals, what would Cam’ron say if his family was murdered and someone who had information to put the criminal away decided not to snitch! i’m sure he would be singing a diffrent tune. I do not expect that this will go anywhere. PS. I think it is absolutely hillarious that Tysen Beckford is promoting this because he is a back up dancer who lost his “street credit” A long time ago!
