I was really young when Vanity was hot but I remember liking the song. I saw her on some ministry show last summer, she looked very pretty and healthy and she was preaching the word. She looks very content and happy. Good for her because a lot of people couldn’t bounce back the way that she did.

Nice post! Wow that seems like it was a long time ago.. Prince and his crew made the eighties. I remember the big debate then was who was better, P or MJ. When MJ dropped “Thriller”, P knew he had to come big, so he made Purple Rain. But P always kept some bad bitches. I always wondered why Vanity didn’t play Appolonia in Purple Rain. Whatever happened to Appolonia anyway? And Morris and Jerome?

Vanity hit a rough patch, She OD a few times, then got clean. After she got clean she had a stroke, kidney failure & a host of other health problems.

Actually in the movie it is Applonia, or however you spell it, it is also her in the group. I met Vanity at a church in Georgia she actually inspired me to get baptized at 16. She even performed the ceremony. She is in to God now, she spoke about how she was strung out on drugs that she was scared to leave her apartment, and how at one point she was so hooked she had limo for her and a limo for the person with her drugs. S he did say once she went down hill all the people her were around her while she was doing drugs left her alone and were not there for her. She found out she was sick from all the drug use(liver issues) and thats when she decided to get her life together, married a football player and became sort of like an evangilist. Say what you want, but she’s really nice and anyone who heard her story would be affected, it was horrible to hear someone speak like that, and at church; But it let you know all the fame and money can come and go just as fast as it came and you could be left worse off than before it came.

#54, That’s very interesting, never knew that. Are you sure that’s correct? Prince and Rick James both released they’re solo debut albums in 1978, prior to his solo career, Rick James was in a rock band in the late sixties called The Mynah Birds, Neil Young was also a member of this band. Neither of the two artist “Prince or Rick” reached mainstream success untill the mid-eighties, so why would Prince be opening for Rick who was not yet a superstar either? The MaryJane girls did not hit the scene untill 1983, Vanity Six signed with Prince in 1980, their album went into studio production in 1982 and was released in 1983.

A little info about Vanity6:

Vanity 6 was orginally gonna be called “Vagina” to go with their racey lyrics, and sexual image. But the group thought that was too provacative. The “6″ was used because it sounds like the word sex. Prince named the group. Their racey lyrics are tsame compared to today’s standards.

The song “Slave 4 U” sung by Britney Spears was refrenced from the track “Nasty Girl” done by the Neptunes. The melodic knocking and sexual overtone is a staple to the song.

Wow, This was the good ol’ days…. Vanity was the joint, Eye Candy at it’s best in a camisole! Then along came Appolonia and it got better. And Vanity was NEVER was fired from Purple Rain, she NEVER set foot on set, she and Prince were having personal issues, and she moved on to Motley Crue’s Nikki 6 who was famous back then and a druggie as well whom while together they did hardcore drugs which almost cost her her life. Vanity 2nd of all, she didn’t want to take her top off for the partial nude scene, I have no idea why considering the revealing outfits she wore on stage, 3rd of all, she decieded to shoot THE LAST DRAGON and work on a solo album instead. Her having a drug problem was kept hush hush in the industry, just like the fact that Appolina was a happily MARRIED woman when she did Purple Rain. The studio wanted people to think she and Prince were an item, even in interviews today she’ll tell you they never were, it was all PR.

Vanity 6 are the orginal “Nasty Girls”! The album is still in heavy rotation. Those girls were getting they sexy on ha. I love Vanity 6’s version of “Sex Shooter” more than Apollonia’s version.

Theres a track called “Vibrator” by Vanity 6,which I was told that is unreleased. Great song, but I heard that Prince made her masterbate on the song. Sounds like she really is lol.

#127- That’s the way I heard it, too!! Vanity and Nikki 6 were also engaged at one time. And yes, Susan, the other Black girl in the group was Prince’s high school sweetheart. The white chick, Brenda, was married to Prince’s set designer at the time. She also was Prince’s wardrobe mistress. Guess she picked out and managed his clothes.

I found out about em thru my fat mom, Janet Buttimer, because get this, she says she got knocked up, pregs with me here in Dallas, while listening to some song of Apollonia6 about making “A Mess on my Dress”–

Not sure if that’s the name or not, but she swears that it’s the song she “did it” by - and out I came 9 months later. Unfortunately. My life sux!

Now if she’d only remember the guy’s name that she did it with…jeez…she has no clue…for REAL!

Just a little correction to #60…Vanity 6 as a group was originally supposed to be named “The Hookers”. Before both Prince & Vanity settled on the stage name “Vanity” he wanted her to be named “Vagina”. The “6″ is derived from the group’s breast count LOL! 2X3=6 …Vanity 6 was born.
