VIDEO: LIL MAMA - LIP GLOSS
Thursday, April 5, 2007
Last month we introduced you to Lil Mama, the 17 year-old rapper from NYC and yall lit her a new one. Homegirl wasn’t paying attention to what yall had to say and went out and made a video for that “lip gloss” song anyway. I’m not gonna lie, I bump this song sometimes!
We wanted to point a few things out though; word is the chick can actually rap - this song just doesn’t really prove that. And peep Kimora Lee Simmons’ “KLS” Charm Bracelet lip gloss in the beginning. Gotta love Kimora.
Check out for Lil Mama’s new album “Voice of The Young People” when it hits stores later this year. In the meanwhile, check her myspace page..

I’m not so sure what her ‘lip gloss’ is supposed to represent. I’m thinkin’ it has GOT to be a metaphor for something else. If not, the song has no point and makes absolutely no sense. It doesn’t really sound bad, as far as production goes. But what is she sayin’. ‘My lip gloss be poppin’? HUH?
She sounds like a young Yo-Yo though.

I rarely say anything is cute. But I liked this. It was age-appropriate. And the other poster is right - there’s something extra old and hard about a 16-year-old rappin’ about her p*. I think the premise of her magical lip gloss is cute. I can get wit it.

As for Lil Mama…this is a bit out of my realm but I do think this will appeal greatly to junior high and high school chicketies. To Lil Mama’s credit I am impressed that she was talking about things a girl her age should be. Instead of Pop Lockin & Dropin It.
You know Kimora’s lipgloss sales just shot up by 100%.

I’m 25…but I gotta admit it: the beat is tight, her flavor reminds of Da’ Brat, despite the juvenile lyrics. Should be a hit with the 10-13 age group. What, would you rather hear her rap about “my bubble gum” and how “you can’t have a piece”?

When she was rapping without the beat I think she did fine. However, the beat and the song was horrible But she’s cute though. I think it’s ok for young people. I really feel for the next generation because they are not going to have a chance to know what “real music” is. (Unless their parents or grandparents put them on) I am still ROFL with “my lip gloss be poppin”! LMAO!!

I have no comment because at 25 years old, I’m not in her age demographic either. I know it’s definitely not for me but I’m not going to knock it because this is the kind of light-hearted stuff that maybe teenagers should be listening instead of “Freakum Dress” or songs all about sex. Good for her, maybe she’ll start a movement. My only semi-negative comment would be, this does not look 17. But I remember when I was in high school there were girls just like her who looked grown already.

Gimme a break, music doesn’t have to be “meaningful” or deep to be music, really. I think to be whatever her age is, and her trying to break through this song is perfect fun for high school chicks and their lipgloss. I don’t put this song in the “music is dead” category, she’s a kid making songs for kids, that’s it. Plus her litte break down no music type shit was tight, she can rap.

I’m sorry like I said before that adolescent girl don’t need to be talking about how her lips are attracting guys. It’s just inappropiate to me and she’s sending the wrong message to these already fast ass little girls.
Make a song about applying for college or something, versus how your lips make guys crush on you.

Real talk- Kimora is a beast with that product placement of KLS… you betta work, bitch!
Also, this song isn’t for twenty-somethings, its for the teeny-bopper set and I rather like it for the young cats.
My only concern is the baby she’s holding… I hope she’s not promoting teenage motherhood.
Lastly, I heard Swiss say that she spits harder than some dudes in the industry now so…

I think that the video is very cute and also very age appropriate. Shes not scantily clad, yet still very pretty and stylish. Her style of rap does remind me alot of YOYO/Mc Lyte. Shyt if that other girl can make a song called Chicken Noodle soup with a soda on the side and have that be a huge hit with young kids and teens than why not lipgloss. Not something Ill be dancing to on the dancefloor or pumping out my radio speakers but again, I must keep in mind that the song has a younger target audience. The dancing was good, her rapping childlike but still better than some of what I have heard in recent years! I’d rather hear a 17 yearold rap about lipgloss than getting it on and popping or down and dirty with with some boy.

I think that’s more appropriate for girls her age than TEAIRRA MARI singing “make her feel good” and “i don’t give a fuck” and CASSIE talking about giving head.
She dresses like a teenager. Not like Teairra Mari or Cassie.
Raps about something cute, fun and sexy but not “grown sexy”.
Video is appropriate too, and reflects the normal world of teenagers. No ass or titties, and too short shorts.
She has skills, the breakdown part when she’s holding the baby proves it.
Not something I’d buy but something I’d definitely give to teens in my fam.
YES finally a teen who dresses like and talks the way teens are supposed to.

And how old is JoJo? I’m not sure, but I believe she’s around the same age if not younger, and her music is not as juvenile as this, Joss Stone is only 19! Why do yall find it so hard to beleive a black person can have light eyes? I hope yall are white cause I would hope that most black people KNOW that blacks come in all shades and sizes, including eyecolor. I cant beleive yall are stressin on her eyecolor, I have hazel eyes and most black people dont question them or anything. White people however can be sooo damn ignorant.

Some of these comments are absolutely ridiculous. If you don’t digg the song… that’s’ one thing. Some of ya’ll are so EXTRA. She needs a nose job, she’s not mature, Joss Stone is 19 and she sings about this…, etc…. LMAO. Who the fuck cares?? She’s fine the way her CREATOR made her, just because she has ONE song about lip gloss does not mean she’s immature- it’s simply a fun song, besides, how can you judge a person’s character based off of one song??- I’m sure her album won’t be entirely about lip gloss, and this post is about Lil’ Mama… not Joss Stone or JoJo… they all have competely different styles that are totally unrelated… can I read some posts that aren’t completely laden in bullshit?? hmmmmmmm

lets not forget that “White tee” song, we all know how important that was. I just wanted to comment and say that its really refreshing to see someone act their age.
Almost every artist that came out when they were teens were hyper sexualized. Mya came out with “movin on” and “its all about me” with sisqo when she was 17 and that stuff was hella grown!
Ciara was 18 when she came out in a bra and low rider jeans singin about how she teases men with her goodies but they will neva get them.
Cassie….well her ass was basically singin bout givin head.
Rihanna came out sweet and inocent then switched it up when she hit 18 and now she is performin in cootchie shorts lookin like she 25.
Tearra marie talkin bout she need a man that can handle her in the bedroom when she was 17.
Jojo talkin bout lightin a blunt in “good ole good ole” and she 16.
Usher sung about havin sex in “nice and slow” when he was 17.
So if lil mama wants to rap about he lipgloss game then let her! Her other songs on her myspace sounded more mature anyway, this cuold just be a way to get our generation interested in her so that she can expose them to more meaningful music once they are hooked.

I like her. She’s 17 years old people what did u all expect? She trying to reach her age group which are teens. Maybe she does know how to rap but her label is making her do this teeny boppy stuff to appeal to young kids. At least she is not coming out looking like a sex feen whore like some of these new artists that are coming out today (Cassie). She cute, I’m not writing her off yet. I do think she knows how to rap at the end she was switching words like crazy.

The song is for young teens females and not sexual at (excellent). Lyricist? That don’t happen no more just look at Down South, all they really do is dance around. I expect this from young kids her age but when you got grown ass men doing it (such as Down South)that’s a big problem. Where i’m at in In Cali you would never find males dancing and shit like they do Down South. I would hate on NY to, but every dance song I hear from them come from young females not the males so i’ll keep my mouth shut. This girl can’t hurt hip hop when it died already. You heard Nas!

Do you hear the rap that’s out right now coming from grown ass men in the South, what do you think this teaches the youth? Sorry south side if I offened you just given examples. Do you actually think that Lil Mama is helping damaging rap music? Well check out Young jeezy White girls that really mean Cocaine, Snap ya fingers Lil Jon, Walk it out, that 2 step shit, lean wit it rock with it, etc. Hip hop was damaged before Lil Mama showed up. At least she a young girl doing this and not a grown man. Lil Mama is fully dressed and dressed like a teen at that having fun.

It’s funny how some of the people who comment on these blogs talk about how young artist should stick to their age groups and not try to act grown. Now we finally have a young, pretty MC rapper doing exactly what you guys said you wanted. Now she is being torn down like garbage!
This proves that no matter who you are, you can’t please everyone. With that being said, I think the song is appropiate for her age, and regardless of anything that is said negative about her, she should excel in what she is doing! Now thats whats up!!!!!

SHE IS WHAT I WANT MY 15 Y. O DAUGHTER LISTENING TO! AND I’M GLAD MY DAUGHTER LIKE THIS SONG
TO THE ONES WHO SAID SHE LOOK OLDER THAN HER AGE. SHE DOES NOT TO ME SHE LOOKS 17-19 NOTHING ABOVE THAT. SHE DOES NOT HAVE TO LOOK LIKE A BABY TO BE 17, AS 17 IS NOT A KID AND SHE WILL BE AN ADULT SOON.
IS THIS KID FROM NEW YORK? CAUSE I MOVED FROM MARYLAND ABOUT 3 YEARS AGO TO NEW YORK, AND I NOTICE A DIFFERENCE THE WAY YOUNG GIRLS DRESS AND ACT IN NEW YORK COMPARED TO MARYLAND AND OTHER SOUTHERN REGION PARTS. LIL MAMA FITS THAT DESCRIPTION I SEE IN NEW YORK. THE LITTLE GIRLS DRESS AND ACT A LOT MORE APPROPRIATE THAN IN SOUTHERN REGIONS EVEN THOUGH THEY STILL CAN BE A LITTLE IRRITATED AND GHETTO TO. I HAD TO MOVE MY FAMILY TO GET FROM THE VIOLENCE AND SEX THAT GOES ON OVER THERE IN MARYLAND. I’M GLAD THIS GIRL IS POSITIVE GOOD FOR OUR YOUTH.

I looked at the video 3 times and was jammin each time. This is for a teenage demographic. It is refreshing to hear her rap about somthing so dumb but at the same time appropriate for younger children. Hopefully the rest of her album is better than this but still has that young feel to it. No one is expecting someone from the age of 18 and up to listen to this on a daily basis. She’s young and she’s sticking to what she knows…and obviously its lipgloss. I’m sure as she gets older her topics will mature but now its great for the younger crowd. This song is meant for teenagers - highschool and middleschool students. It’s kind of obvious when you see her dancing around a school with other young kids that its supposed to be a teenage girl’s anthem. Jive calls her “the voice of the young people” and I highly doubt that they expect 23 yr old men and women to bounce to this in the club. It ain’t for you. If you don’t like it, don’t listen.

I tell you, people will rap about ANYTHING these days. The song is plain wack. I understand that she’s only 17 years old and probably don’t want to rap about “heavy” stuff. But damn, this is as corny as they get. Not feeling it at all. :0(

Okay I’m 22 so this is so not for me, however none of the music out now appeals to me even from the older folks in the game. I watched 106&Park yesterday on the count down I hear a song called “Pop lock and drop it”, ” Rock yo hips then wave and sip”, ” Let me buy u a drink”(the song should only be sung by people old enough to get in clubs). This show is for teens yet all the video’s are for muture audiences. I know 17yr olds with 2&3 kids. LiL Mama can sing about lip gloss all day long and get my support.
P.S.
Look at all the big Grown Women bow was singing to in all is video’s from day 1!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Age Appropriate, listenable beat. She’s no dummy and is going along with the arbitrary pop song writing that’s going on. And to top it all off she’s a rapper that can dance. If she’s marketed right she’ll do just fine. My Jr. High lil’ brother’s friends are lovin it.

LMAO @ #5
How WACK was that!!!
The video premise was WACK - Last time I checked lip gloss didn’t make you popular at high school!
The production was lackluster, the beat wasn’t enough…she needed neptunes on that shit!!
Lyrically I was shocked the ENTIRE song was about lip gloss - now that takes talent….talking about nothing for 4 mins!!
The only positive aspects was the colouful / fun vibe of the video and the artists flow (I can’t bring myself to call her by her name)

im sorry but im still disgusted by this dumb song
im around that girls age && only the kid who would listen to this is that kid who still listens to radio disney… im not gonna lie, the beat is crack but the song is the wackest excuse of a song… im her age && i want my music to have more substance than that. this is for like my 5 year old cousins. just because we arent grown doesnt mean we dont want songs that have some meaning. believe it or not, chicken noodle soup && rock yo hips make me wanna smack this whole generation. sure, its cool to dance to but when you get home && wanna chill out… do u wanna hear bout some poppin lip gloss?? point blank, you can have an ‘age appropriate’ song that isnt stupid && have no point… what has the music world come to?

You people complain about a song on LIP GLOSS? Fun songs have always been in Hip Hop, wasn’t KRS 1 was rapping about “ADIDAS”? And he’s one of the smartest and dopest emcees ever. Wasn’t nobody dissing Nelly for singing about “Air Force One” either.
Like someone else said BOW WOW was talking to and about grown ass women and had grown ass chicks in his video at age 14 (video ft. Snoop) and nobody was calling this boy a “fast ass boy”, yet SHE is a problem?
Long as the chick ain’t rapping about getting or giving head like most boys and girls her age out there, I’m cool with her, and she can definitely be the Voice Of The Youth!!

all you old people dissing her should be ashamed of yourselves. It is a cute song and it is appropriate for her age. I do not want my kids listening to 50 cents n lil kim. She would soon grow up and end up doing more mature songs.
I like it and i think she is a sharp girl. If she has several nice songs in her album then I think she would do fine.

people like you do not see anything wrong in 17yr olds having babies (Judging from your comment).
You know Joss stone is not acting her age(Dating a man old enough to be father). Well her songs represent her lifestyle). Make sure you come up with better comparisons next time.

I really dont see the reason for the song……who cares if her lip gloss is popping????? She should’ ve done a MAC commercial!!!!!!! Does she want us all to go buy lip gloss ????? Then she bought the lip gloss into “G-Slide”……..she needed to stop then. But she is a good dancer.
