VOTE FOR KIRI DAVIS “A GIRL LIKE ME”
Thanx to my girl Patrice from Afrobella.com I was informed that Kiri Davis the 17 year old producer/director of the very moving film “A Girl Like Me” is currently trying to win the CosmoGirl Take Action Hollywood Film Contest.
If you haven’t seen the film, I added to the post above. It sparked a really good debate on the site last year.
Anyway, make sure you support Kiri Davis and give her a vote. The winner gets $10,000 and a feature in the August issue of CosmoGirl.

me too…
I’m voting! I LOVED this little doc. So very true.
VERY NICE…HI BILL!!
Hi BashyBoo !!!
I voted too…
I think I will vote again.
She got my vote for sure. Don’t sleep ya’ll. This little girl is wise and talented beyond her years.
I have to watch it later, classes and all, but I heard it was very moving!
What a beautiful and intelligent young lady! This documentary is so true and is an example of the very things we argue about on the loop everyday! She’s got my vote!
I voted yesterday! Please vote guys!
THis is beautiful and Ms. Kiri Davis has a bright future. Speaking about the stero types of black women. We need a young brother to do it from thier point of view.
i’m voting but i have genuine questions
i don’t understand the skin bleaching cream. wouldn’t you have to put it on your whole body so that your skin is all the same? doesn’t that take way too much work? don’t understand it!
and what is good hair? the girl in the film said it’s hair that doesn’t have to be relaxed but people of all races tell me they love my hair and i relax it. my black friends have long hair as well and they relax it. i even have mixed friends who relax theirs so what does good hair mean?
very good film btw. i had seen it a while ago and i sent it to all my friends
For good hair she means hair that is loosely curled or wavy. I dont think anyone HAS to relax, but most girls with “good hair” dont relax so I think thats what she meant.

Bill Said;
There’s a girl that posts on CL.
I think I remember her name being Loranda or Laronda..something like that….
Anyways,
She Bleaches her skin…
You know what: I have the same questions
Did Michael Jackson Bleach his ENTIRE body ??
Does the Adverage Black Person Bleach their entire bodies ????
How do you Bleach you back ?
How do you Bleach your Penis ???
Do you stick the Penis in the Bleach bottle, or do you Pour the Bleach on the Penis ??? Does it Burn ???
I have so many questions….
Help !!!
i voted!!
I voted for her, It’s a shame she has the least amount of votes so far. Her documentary is so true.
what were the other documentaries about btw? i want to see them
LOL @ Bill pointing out the riddiculousness of the whole bleaching thing. Some Black people CAN be so full of self-hate it actually makes me upset. I cried when that black girl said the white doll looked & was better but acknowledged that she looks most like the black one. Y’all made fun of her but these are the kids who will turn into the future Lashondas. And don’t forget that some of you bullied, laughed at, chased her off this blog & i also remember people describing her as “crispy”. I won’t put you on blast but you’re no better than the self haters because you encourage them in their self-hate and reinforce their views on race. We should be mature enough to educate and support the the girls like those in the video & the Lashondas of this world, because I know some of y’all are just the same. this whole issue makes me too sad.
I have to admit that this ‘documentary’ was interesting a year ago. Today, not so much.
At any rate, I voted for the chick as you all should because she is in last place.
http://www.cosmogirl.com/funandgames/video/
@16 she has little votes b/c most of the magazine readers are white. they can relate to anorexia/weight issues and drugs/alcohol/teen pressure more that they can relate to black girl/colorism/expectations. personally i preferred her vid and the weight issues vid
Thanks for the love, Angel! I really hope that the Loop can make a difference here. She’s still lagging behind the other two videos. Big respect to the Concrete Loop fam! I saw you got mentioned on Yahoo’s list of top bloggers, that’s a GREAT look. Congratulations! Go Kiri!!!

^^^^^^^^^^ PREACH.
12. help said :
and what is good hair?
^^^^^^^^^^ My definition of good hair is healthy hair. And it doesn’t matter if you dye your hair a certain color, perm your hair (and that means CURL THEM, that’s something white ppl do) or relax them, or keep it natural (no matter the texture – nappy or straight), if your hair HEALTHY then it’s good. But the popular definition of good hair is either straight or curly hair, but anything that is not nappy. Which I find totally ridiculous.
Thanks Maya…
Lashonda…Yeah, THAT’s her name !!
Can SOMEONE email this movie to Lashonda ???
PEOPLE BOOKMARK THIS LINK AND VOTE EVERYDAY!! That’s what I’ll do.
That’s one of my favorite Vid’s I’ve been sending it around for a few months to all my little cousins in highschool. It’s a great eye-opener for them!
Ladies…
We got to get past this “Good Hair” terminology…
Can you ladies think of ANOTHER way to describe your hair ???
It quite possible, that this is WHY Don Imus feels that it’s okay to refer to Black Woman with Natural Style hair as “Nappy Haired Hoes”….
SOME Caucasians have already concluded that Black Woman have corse, brittle hair…
Why should we further agree with those
profane descriptions of our own race’s features ??
Peace
MAD AS HELL
The damn help desk ppl here have the voting blocked. I will have to do it at home.
I voted for Kiri. I admire anyone who tries to evoke change in our race and in our way of thinking. Though, i must say i think it’s up to each individual to evoke change in themself. We can sit down all day long and watch these type of videos, but until we feel better and think differently about ourselves, not a damn thing is gonna change. I seen this video on here last year, and it sure hasn’t changed any of the poster on here. I still hear words like nappy head, bad hair, and look at her weave, and whatever. We are just a messed up people when it comes to appearances, and we are so hard on each other, myself included, and we individual need to feel better and see the value in ourselves. No video can do that for us. I’m working on this.
I’m very shocked at the white doll thing, when I was young I didnt own a white doll and I never wanted one, I think these views of white people must come from the family also, b/c I always saw the black doll as the prettiest, and the whole light skin dark skin thing is weird also, when I lived in the south I never heard anthing about skin shades and never even noticed it. But when I moved to the north, it was a big deal to some people. This video makes me very sad.
I voted. But damn, the wind flew out of my chest when I saw the updated experiment of the black doll vs the white doll.
I think being offended about being called a nappy headed ho begs the question: Which term stung Black women more? Being called nappy headed or being called a hoe? Steve Harvey also pointed this out.
But believe me when I say that even women with so called “good hair” can have naps. For me naps is anything you can’t run a comb straight through without it getting entangled. Hell, I know tons of Jewish people that have naps!
I believe Black people see naps as a bad thing because the forefathers attached it to being Black, which back them was considered shameful. But even today in some African tribes you’ll see that a woman’s crown is the focus of a lot of stress for her. It’s not just in America. The only difference is that some tribes don’t focus on whose hair is nappiest, they focus on whose is the most colorful or adorned.
I’m interested to see how the movie Nappily Ever After will turn out. It’s based on a book about a woman who is on a mission to free herself from her hair because she feels it’s sending the wrong message and attracting the wrong people. Good book. I hope the movie doesn’t suck.
The bottom line is you could have natural Hawaiian silky hair that flows down your back with the fairest skin and still have issues. There are plenty of examples of that. And I’ve said it before, it has nothing to do with hair and skin. It has to do with whether or not people are taught to love and embrace themselves no matter what texture or skin color they were born with. Unfortunately a lot of sisters weren’t that blessed.
I wish I could vote one thousand times…………..
PREACH Ms_Mac! -Passes collection plate-

I also saw this video a while ago, but it still resonates with me. She is such an intelligent young woman, so wonderful to see. The doll experiment though plagues me every time though, it actually wrenches my heart to see the self-discrimination (I think at 5 years of age it is too early to call it hate) at such a young age, in both sexes. I never had a white doll in my life, my mother wouldn’t let me have one. All I can say is I really appreciate that she had the foresight to see what that could have potentially done to my self perception. All that said I wish this young lady much success.
I just voted again…
Man, this movie is SO Good.
15 out of 21 Black CHILDREN picked the WHITE DOLL as being the “Good Doll”….
One little girl said the black doll was the “Bad” doll, because it was black…
When the interviewer asked her which doll looked like her, she picked up the black doll
Has anyone ever seen Spike Lee’s Movie School Daze ?
Kiri Davis movie reminds me of School Daze..
I seen the video a few months back and I was soooo impressed! The doll experiment did kind of tear my heart up maybe because around that time they been experienced the color thing.
But Im about to go vote because girl deserves it!
Hey Bam Bam,,,
I voted too. So sad that it came to this.
I voted but it looks like Kiri’s in last place =(
BUT good news is Kiri was mentioned in Ebony magazine as part of the “Next generation of African-American leaders”. I don’t think most CosmoGirl readers can relate to the struggles of being African American being that the magazine is predominantly Caucasian.
The majority of white people think they have better hair than blacks! They see our hair and skin color as a part of our struggle! If they see a light-skinned person, they check the hair next to determine if its coarse!
My definition of good hair goes beyond how healthy it is! I like it to be clean, shine in the sunlight, neat and styled! Some people with dreads have none of these features, but their hair is still very healthy! They don’t wash it, cut it, or style it!
Am I my hair?
I admit i cried when i seen this video.
@ 29. Drea2006 : same goes with me, as a child i never understood the whole skin shades nonsense.. (i asumed that if you were black then your black no matter what skin tone you are) these concepts are learned and those kids in the video will follow the same learning process that we have.
This is all psychologically damaging and i just wonder where this whole going to end! i really dont want to bring children in the world with all this degrading representations of us black women.
That was awesome. Kiri seems to be a very articulate young lady and I commend her for trying to make her way into the film industry. Hopefully she will make great strides and I wish her all the best success…..she has my vote!
i watched the video for the girl in first place….and it has ABSOLUTELY NO POINT! It’s pretty much a lame music video.
Anyway, I voted for Kiri and hope that she wins cause she does deserve it.
Kiri Davis is an intelligent young woman, and her film is powerful. It’s a shame that kids see the “nice” doll as not of their own heritage. This is what America tries to shove down our throats as the standard of beauty.
@ HELP and Bill u and me both dont understand about skin bleaching, maybe we should address these questions to some yardies and Nigerians because they seem lead the way when it comes to do this and most tend to just bleach their face not anywhere else which is stupid as now their face is light and and an off key colour whilst the rest of their body is still dark. LOL.
It’s all about self-love, it is what they are lacking, without that you can’t love another.Have to be a role model to these young kids-girls exactly because they think the color of their skin is wrong and its not,it so beautiful they just don’t see.It hurts me they don’t.
I wonder if Michael Jackson (and others) Bleach their penis……
Ive been lookin for this vid. I saw it some time last year on a black hair care website. I really like where she is going with this.
I am so glad someone is speaking on this, I see so many black men prefer lighter women, same with men in my culture (middle eastern), why is that? Racism does start within our own communities and we have to change our own mindset first before we can change those around us.
Question… has the director straightened her hair?

Bill Said:
The Director has Dreds……
The whole black vs. white doll thing is kind of like a self-fulfilling prophesy. Blacks have been told that they are inferior to whites for ages so, we automatically start to believe that especially because Blacks still struggle for equality in society and discrimination still exists. it’s pretty sad.
That was so good! At 8:10 that made me tear up. I know when I was younger I probably had all black dolls and it just was a matter of identifying with what I was and not a matter of bad or good, black or white. It took me some time to realize the racial issues that remain in our society, my parents always warned me, but I was ignorant to it unitl I lived a little. I don’t allow other’s inability to be open to everyone hold me down and make me feel oppressed, different, or unworthy. That’s just not option or a way of life for me. I’m voting for Kiri Davis!
I saw the movie and I was not suprised by the comments that were made. This is what happens when fair skin people make terrible comments. Please don’t act suprise!
Shame Shame Shame!!!!!!!!
I will vote for Kiri and here is a shout out to all the girls in the documentary.
..I’m sorry..Kiri Davis has Long Hawainian Silky Hair…
@ knowledge some people use bleaching creams, not necesarily to brighten or lighten pigmentation but to remove any dark spots, blemishes or scars. It would be really stupid for someone to try and lighten their face and not their entire body, if you know someone who does that then, smh. But don’t go assuming that every light skinned nigerian you see has used a bleaching cream.
great video. my computer almost froze when i was voting for her because that site has way too much javascript and crap, but i still voted. the other videos though? they were a pointless. she really deserves to win.
