WHO SUNG IT BETTER ANYWAY?: BEYONCE V.S DES’REE

Wednesday, April 18, 2007

beedesiree.jpg

Beyonce remade a song called “Still In Love (Kissing You)”, but it’s being reported she never had permission to record the song and is being hit with a lawsuit:

According to a lawsuit filed yesterday in Manhattan Federal Court by music administators, Beyonce allegedly never obtained proper clearance to cover a song called “I’m Kissing You,” originally co-written by a singer named Des’ree — famous for her 1994 smash hit, “Gotta Be.” Des’ree’s version was used in Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film “Romeo and Juliet,” Beyonce’s version can be found on the re-release of her album, “B’Day.”

In the lawsuit, Des’ree and her reps claim that Beyonce, along with her record company people, originally tried to work out a deal to use the song. When they weren’t satisfied with the proposed terms — which included not being able to change the title or make a music video for the song — Beyonce’ allegedly blew off copyright law completely, and recorded the song and video without permission. The song was eventually released on Beyonce’s album, “B’Day - Deluxe Edition” on April 3, 2007, with the title “Still in Love (Kissing You).”

Des’ree is suing to halt distribution of the song, video and album and seeking at least $150,000 in damages. READ MORE

Looks like Bee went hard on them and said she gonna do this song for her man. I’ve always like Des’ree though, she has a beautiful voice and I found it odd for Beyonce to remake the song anyway seeing how it was released and plenty people know about it. I’ll let you guys be the judge in this challenge: Who sung it better anyway?

she jacks people’s track and take credit for it. a recuring theme.

she can sing but not the best singer i’ve heard to date. once people get over her azz (which is looking to be the case) she better hope her two album deal sells enough to get another contract. if she’s doing less numbers already her sales has nowhere to go but down. her peak was 3 years ago. sorry

Umm that is the same damn song, B better be glad I am not on that jury, Deseree would would be owning B-day. For an artist of her callibar to stick it to someone who hasn’t hit in years is just plain wrong, now she has to come correct. But 150K what is that, shit if I was representing her we would be requesting all royalties from distribution to vidoe, sale, recorded rights, and any other monetary cuts that song brought to the sale of the DVD. B would be out of luck, LOL Dee get yours!

Des’ree w/ a doubt , I remember when I was w/ my ex. wifey when I lived in NY that joint in Romeo and Juliet put alot of chicks emotional, I understand people nowadays like Bee and everything she sings but com’on Des’ree is that song. Bee can’t fill the shoes on that.

Wednesday, April 18, 2007 /

Oh gosh! How can you say Des’ree’s version had more passion? B/c it was on that scene in Romeo and Juliet when they were flirting n stuff? Her voice is wayyyyy too deep, but yes she can sing. And I LOVED Romeo and Juliet but didn’t even recall this song until it was brought to my attention. Everything Bee touches turns to gold, so I don’t blame her for doing it anyway. Damn, I would love to just spend a day in her shoes. People be on her like white on rice. Hell, I had never heard of the song or the singer until Bee’s version came out. Congrats girl, you still are the first thing on people’s mind when they wake up.

AGAIN THIS IS FROM THE COMPANY SUING BEYONCE AND COMPANY

THIS IS FROM WESTBURY MUSIC, THE COMPANY OVER DESREE

Beyonce Does A Cover Of “Im Kissing You”

The love theme from “Romeo & Juliet” finds favour with the US superstar - but legal problems abound…

The beautiful world superstar Beyonce is rapidly becoming one of the favourite Westbury artistes.
A couple of months ago, she put out a version of her “Ring The Alarm” single with samples from the Winston Riley/Tenor Saw track “Ring The Alarm”. This pleased us.

Now we are delighted. Because she has covered the tune “Im Kissing You”, written by Desree and Westbury writer Tim Atack.

The tune first came to attention as the Love Theme from the Baz Luhrmann 1996 version of “Romeo And Juliet” and, since then, has featured on more than 50 compilations and has become one of the best-known Desree tunes, even though it has never been released as a single.

But this new version has caused problems to do with the unlicensed adaptation (new lyrics inserted) and the fact her record company has sought to re-title her version. These might still bring the use to court. We would hope not but we have the rights of the writer to protect!

The new version has already been done on video, showing it may be being thought of as a future single.

We thought our tender reader might like to remind themselves of the original song

before sampling the Beyonce video…

Date: April, 2007

PEOPLE NEED TO STOP ASSUMING AND KNOW BEFORE THEY SPEW OFF TRASH. BEYONCE DID NOT STEAL THE SONG, SHE CHANGED THE LYRICS AND TITLE!

Des’Ree has the type of voice with that deep end that reaches in and grabs your soul like her fellow Brit Mica Paris, who, incidentally, sang the original version of You Put A Move On My Heart much better than Tamia (whom I love as well).

des’ree wins no doubt
bee has a beautiful voice but it doesn’t suit the song as well as des’ree’s voice. the richness, the depth, everything was heart-wrenching. someone said des’ree’s voice was too deep. that’s the point. there’s something beautiful in her deepness. it’s like sadness or like she says “the aching”. and her version is more simple which is also a plus.

bee’s added “lyrics” are something to laugh about. she added words to every part of the song while des’ree let the music ride and sink in. bee could have done w/o the “you’re my father you’re my protector i love you” nonsense. too cliche.

that being said i do think that as a whole bee has more range in her voice than des’ree and pulls off more genres but the question was who sang THIS song better, not who is the better singer. no offense to the ppl who voted for bee, but anyone who thought des’ version was sub-par to bee’s knows nothing about REAL music.

Now, because DESREE is less popular and a “hasbeen” people prefer Beyonce’s version? Find a better argument please you people are fools. Tamia is a hasbeen compared to Ciara, does Ciara sing better than her? Think people, think a little!

And Des’Ree is a great singer, she’s the one behnd “You gotta be cool, you gotta be tough, you gotta be stronger / All I know all I know love will save the day”, how could you forget that? And her song “Life”? I love her.

Des’Ree kills it literally I prefer the way she sings it. It’s a no brainer to me, she has much more soul - I don’t care how popular she is and how much she sold.

It’s a damn shame how ignorant a lot of yall are.

1. Making an opinion when you ain’t even heard the damn original.
2. If you had a brain you would know that they are two different songs. It’s not a cover because the lyrics are totally NEW.
3. Beyonce clearly made a NEW version of the song, and she needs to owe up and pay Desiree for the song.
4. Beyonce sang the song better.
5. Just from the stance of songwriting, Beyonce’s version SHITS on Des’ree’s. READ the damn lyrics if you dont have the songs.

LYRICS

Pride can stand a thousand trials
The strong will never fall
But watching stars without you my soul cried
Heaving heart is full of pain
Oh, oh, the aching

Touch me deep, pure and true gift to me forever
Cause, I’m kissing you
Oh, I’m kissing you, oh
Where are you now?
Where are you now?
Cause, I’m kissing you
I’m kissing you, oh

[chorus]
I’m kissing you, oooh
I’m kissing you, oooh

your my father, you are my soldier,
you protect me, boy you save me, your my best friend, you’re my husband
you are my doctor, counselor, provider, professor, my everything

and I love you, I love you, I love you, yes I love you I..
I need you, I need you, I need you, I can’t live without you
I trust you, I trust you with every ounce of me
just teach me, boy teach me,just take me

baby you’re so pure

[chorus]
I’m kissing you, forever and ever and ever
I love kissing you (kissing you, kissing you)

my love, everything about you baby
It’s been so many years since we fell in love
you’ve got something special baby
we can cry together
we can grow together
be ourselves together

and I love you, more than music
Yes I love you, more than music
I rather be kissing you, oooh

Off Topic:

Here’s an interesting review of Kelly Rowland’s song by writer Charles Perez in Billboard magazine. The interesting thing about this review is how Kelly is rated as a singer:

Five years after solo debut, “Simply Deep” sold 2 million records, Destiny’s Child alumnus (and arguably, the trio’s best singer) Kelly Rowland returns. The lead single, Polow Da Don’s drum-friendly “Like This,” unfortunately, buries her usually soulful voice and diva-esque harmonies behind a gimmick-ridden pop radio-friendly track, which, while set up to seduce top 40 and clubs (and particularly females who have dealt with drama in past relationships, a rare topic heard in female R&B songs lately), is simply not up to par with what we know Rowland is capable of delivering. Rapper Eve further slums down the track with a superfluous, humdrum rap. New album “Here I Am” boasts star-studded alliances from Sean Garret, Bryan-Michael Cox and Rich Harrison. But this first single, while high profile, is ultimately a feeble front-runner.—Charles Perez

Des’Ree sang it better, no doubt. I understand why she didn’t want B. to change the name of the song and make a video. Those actions would make it seem like it was a Beyonce original. A lot of B.’s fans don’t know who Des’Ree is, so she’d never get proper credit for her song. Hmph, that’s just like Poppa Knowles to try to steal somebody’s thunder…

Des’ree is everything Beyonce wishes and purports to be. A hearfelt vocalist, and a true songwriter. Beyonce is neither. Beyonce is a pop star, nothin really wrong with that. Just means that there is a certain element if fakeness to everything Beyonce does, including her take on this song. Des’ree sang from her soul. Beyonce just mimicked the feel of the song. While, Des’ree CREATED the feeling. Des’ree wins hands down! Note to B-Fans: There was a music industry before Beyonce and there will be one after Beyonce.

Oh…no way…”Kissing You” was beautiful the way it was. Ugh…no way. Des’ree all the way! I remember when this song originally came out. It was with that “Romeo and Juliet” movie from the 90s. I was in 7th grade.

“I love you, I love you, I love you.” What the hell…I think the song lost its integrity with this remake. The lyrics are kinda lame. UGH. Don’t get me wrong, it’s good for what it is…but when I have to compare it to Des’ree?? There’s no competition…the passion and emotion you hear in Des’ree’s voice, and the her version’s lyrics?? Desree did really well and was successful in England for quite a while (for those of you calling her a one hit wonder). Plus she can really saaaang.

Des’ree sang the 1994 hit “You Gotta Be” and while she has not had much U.S. success, she is well-known in other parts of the world. But that is irrelevant. It does not matter if she is a “nobody”. It does not matter whether she was “tripping” with the deal she tried to sign with Beyonce. IT IS HER SONG!!!! She can do what she wants with it.
Bee sang it well. I love Des’ree’s version better coz that’s the one I have known and I have her “Supernatural” album. But again that is irrelevant. If you stole it, PAY UP!!!!
