See, its things like this is what makes you dislike Beyonce. Can’t blame this one on her father! She’s forever fuckin stealin people’s shit, and claiming it as her own, trying to put her own spin to it. Des’ree knew what she was doing. She didn’t want a video made because anyone that’s not aware of the song would probably think Beyonce wrote the song, and that’s its her song, just like a lot of her other stuff she’s done. Beyonce and her reps are so dishonest, and they are going to crash and burn. You can’t keep doing things to people and think there are no consequences. Why she couldn’t simply comply with Des’ree’s wishes is beyond me, what she was asking for wasn’t ridiculous demands. There was no cause for what she did. Why she’s only being sued for $150,000 i dont know. But i would sue her ass for way more than that! Beyonce wont miss that $150,000 which is probably why they went ahead and did it.

I could only hear 10 seconds of the Desree version, but I remember the song well. Desree’s voice has more soul more feeling in it. When I hear her version, I feel like I’m in love.

Bee’s just sounds shallow and does nothing for me. She needs to pay Desree her money AND fire whoever she’s got working for her who allowed this to happen in the first place.

I’ll say Bey because her song has more raw emotion. But, if you haven’t seen Romeo & Juliet w/ Leo Dicaprio, Desree performs the song in the movie and she shows a lot of emotion in the perfomance. It’s close. But, I will agree, Bey has made a lot of mistakes when it comes to claiming to have written music. She also claimed she wrote “wishing on a star” the song she performed in some commercial. I think she just says what she’s told to say and it bites her in the ass sometimes.

I like both versions as well. That scene where Des’ree sang the song in Romeo and Juliet was one of my favorites. And though the video that Beyonce did for it is very intimate, I don’t love it and think she should have done more. I think both women have beautiful voices. Beyonce has a knack for making a song her own, even if it is a remake. Looks like this time, the judge will have the last word on this one. I’m sure Sony has some kind of loop hole to justify her recording this. If not, it certainly was irresponsible of them to allow for the release of it.

That is a rather unfair comparison, seeing as there is only a snippet of the Des’ree version. No. 12 it is not just you, I think it’s just soemthing with teh download.

I remember I used to watch that movie repeatedly, and I loved that song. I like both Des’ree and Beyonce’s version, except towards the end, where Beyonce gets sort of sloppy. So Des’ree wins out based on refinement.

I really hope this is an exaggerated rumor. I understand why Des’ree did not want the name changed, however, why was she tripping on allowing Beyonce’ to do a video for it? At the same time, I completetly disagree with the way Beyonce’ went about it. She bogarded another artist, b/c Des’ree is not working with the money or power she has in the industry. Strictly on GP, it speaks volumes about Beyonce’s character…B knew that she could do the song justice, but an artist refused to allow her the freedom to copy her work. It seems like dignity and true class, would have motivated her to shake that off and go do something of her own that was even better.

When a song has been previously recorded by another artist(origina artost) song writer, you must obtain permission to record and use it, or you will pay the price. I bought the romeo and juliet soundtrack just for desiree’s version, I had no clue who she was and saw the movie and heard the song and I had to have it, the emotion is so raw and pure. I still play the cassette (yep cassette) to this day-

I heard beyonce’s version as well, I think that they both bring their own individual sound and emotion to it-to me you either like one or the other depending on your personal preference-I loooove beyonce without a doubt and like her version, but I prefer desiree’s version-two totally different singers and two different styles-does one necessarily have to be better why can’t we appreciate both versions?

I have the entire Des’Ree version and have listened to it a million. It’s one of my favorite songs in the world and she kills it. The type of emotion and soul she sings with could never be matched, definitely not by Bey. Don’t get me wrong: Bey can sing and she has a nice voice but with the exception of Dangerously In Love [the song], I’ve never really heard that type of passion emanate from her. Record labels do it all the time. How do you think people sample so much music in rap? You get a compulsory liscense and make the track. Kanye West, everybody does it.

I’m shocked that her record company would let something like this slide, there are entire departments dedicated to making sure the songs they put out are legally sound.

I can’t decide if “only” suing for $150,000 proves the case or not….One might say suing for such a small amount shows that they have nothing in favor, but then again one could say the small amount shows they aren’t suing just to get rich, they have an actual case.

Okay, well I’m in the industry and I have to say this was the stupidiest move on Beyonce’s part. Very stupid. First off, for those who think that Beyonce went ahead and recorded the song without permission already knowing how much she would have gotten sued for, it doesn’t work that way. Beyonce had no idea how much she would have gotten sued for. That figure came along after the fact. So let’s say Des’ree asked for more money…way more than what she is seeking. Would it really have been worth it? Aside from that, this makes Beyonce a figure that some may not want to work with in the future. Imagine if other artists just went ahead and recording material they didn’t receive permission or clearance on with the thought in the back of their mind that they could afford the lawsuit. It’s the dumbest thing an artist can do, because in the end it will hurt their reputation and ultimately their career.

Its funny that the same people who keep saying everybody is hating on Beyonce are the same people who hate on others. They are both talented black women. Now we are delighted. Because she has covered the tune “Im Kissing You”, written by Desree and Westbury writer Tim Atack.

The tune first came to attention as the Love Theme from the Baz Luhrmann 1996 version of “Romeo And Juliet” and, since then, has featured on more than 50 compilations and has become one of the best-known Desree tunes, even though it has never been released as a single.

But this new version has caused problems to do with the unlicensed adaptation (new lyrics inserted) and the fact her record company has sought to re-title her version. These might still bring the use to court. We would hope not but we have the rights of the writer to protect!

The new version has already been done on video, showing it may be being thought of as a future single.

Des’ree’s makes you just want to sit down and cry, while Beyonce’s makes you want to get between the sheets.

I love the richness of Des’ree’s voice on this and I think this is better than most of the stuff of hers that was actually released to radio back in the day. This vocal is so haunting and passionate.

On the other hand, this vocal shows me a completely different side of Beyonce — a more restrained one, but with stellar vocals. This should put to rest any thought that the girl can’t sing. She SANG on this one.

IF, If, IF news of the lawsuit is true, then it’s too bad something couldn’t be worked out. Des’ree could have pocketed a nice piece of change.

You cannot rip off someone’s song. This is not sampling. It’s stealing. If you want to sing someone else’s song, go pay them for the rights. I don’t care how insignificant you think Des’ree is. It’s HER song and clearly, she’s good enough that she can write her own music. If you don’t like the terms, write your own songs.

People, get the facts straight…

She had permission to cover and use the song, but they agreed that she would:

1. Not change the title, which she did, Beyonce calls it “Still in Love (Kissing You)” instead of “Kissing You”

and 2. Not make a video, which she did, its on the DVD, but to be honest, its not much of a video and more of a photo montage of Beyonce on the beach

At the end of the day, I think Des’ree is being a little petty. She is credited as a writer on the song and the original title is still a major part of the song. If anything, she should be glad for the publicity that would come. I have loved “Kissing You” for years, but I am sure many people would have never heard it or knew about it until this “controversy”.

The original song is so beautiful, I’ve always loved it. Bee’s version is over the top as usual…. no but really, not feelin Bee’s vesion.

Thanks for the compliment! All said, I think Beyonce is talented and, as proven by all the comments directed towards her here, one of our most valued Black performers. I’m just not a stan and I think she’s a tad overrated. I mainly like to have a little fun at her expense.

It’s amazing that no other Black singer has inspired such strong debate between two extremes: the one’s who like her, and the one’s who don’t. Our singing heroines are usually universally loved (Chaka, ‘Retha, Diana, Mary J., Whitney, Patti etc.).

What is it about her that divides us so? Some might say that it is because she’s just THAT special. But I think that it is because where there is smoke……there seems to be some missing component. It could be there is a sneaking suspicion that she does not think for herself and if you look closely, you can see “behind the curtain”.

Fell in love with song after watching Romeo & Juliet when it came out. Desree’s version is more passionate has more soul and you can feel it it’s meaningful. Then comes along Beyonce and flips it into her own love song to her husband and the song completely looses the plot. Desree wins this one hands down, No Doubt.

And please for the sake of the song is there some kind of device that could erase Beyonce’s version from our memory????

i heard des’ree sing it years ago on my way to ocmulgee georgia for a spanish trip…one of my friends had the soundtrack. i bought the movie a few days later just for that song. i don’t much care for beyonce’s interpretation.

Anyway, as for the versions of this song….I have loved this song since I first heard it in Romeo and Juliet. This is the song that I walked down the cliff on in Jamaica when I got married….(mind you this happened years after I heard the song) No one can sing this song like Des’Ree….When she sings this song…it raises something in your soul…you can just feel her emotion…and it transfers….Beyonce’s version is ok….but I wouldn’t have chosen to walk down the aisle to that…..sorry.

I like Beyonce when she was with Destiny’s Child and when she first started solo with her Dangerously in Love album. I noticed that she didn’t have as much flack with her first album that she did with her B’Day album. Even though she was sued with Baby Boy, that’s pretty much about it, but when B’Day came out, that’s when she changed. Beyonce can sing her ass off, and she tored that infringed song up, but she shoudn’t steal from other people. Beyonce, come back to the Dangerously In Love days, please. You were much humble then. You’re too overrated now.

Um, Desiree did co- write the song. She was out a lot longer than Beyonce and I’m not surprised half you idiots have never heard of her- you all probably were like three when Romeo and Juliet came out. Beyonce did not simply cover ths song- if you have one third of a brain, you can tell that lyrics have been changed as well as the song arrangement ,which would make someone ignorant think Beyonce wrote the entire song and probably to aid Beyonce in court when she tries to claim she didn’t rip this lady off. But she clearly did just that. When are people going to be able to realize that just because you are famous doesn’t mean you are above the law? If this was the other way around( Desiree stealing Beyonce’s shit) you people would be passing out and crying and saying how that bitch needs to give Beyonce her money. To the person who asked whether B changed the name of the song, yes she did. D’s version is called I’m Kissing You ( Love Theme from Romeo and Juliet) [I doubt they wanted her to leave theme...in] and B’s version is called Still In Love (Kissing You).

Both versions are very good, I like them both in their own right. B should have complied with the rules, which were not bad or ridiculous. It is obvious that B owes D money. No matter how much/how little B sampled, she still sampled illegally.

And B and her camp would be pissed if someone else took her work, likewise all of you who are saying that it is no big deal, let someone steal the work that you worked hard to create, and let’s see what happens. I for one would be pissed, and I would have sued for a lot more, an amount of money that would have put a dint into her pocket so she learns a lesson, and learns that it’s not okay, alright, or cute.

The original is the best. Extremely powerful, except no one will vote for it here, because you only can hear 20 seconds of it. PS. DesRee didn’t write it. Sade did. DesRee performed it for the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack. Watch it with the movie and you will see why I think the original is the best. Blew me away.

Des’ree’s song is better, the beat, the words and the voice. It’s unisexual - beyonce’s talking about a boy and quite frankly with the additional lyrics, she makes the song very cheesy. it’s enjoyable and beyonce has a nice voice, but if u’ve heard the original then u’ll definitely like the original better - bcos it really is better! and yes, she does ruin the song.

DES’REE defiinitely has a SUPERIOR QUALITY VOICE - BEYONCÉ LACKS the richness and feeling that DES’REE has. And not only is Des’ree a talented singer - she also composed this beautiful song. Beyconé has a nice voice, nothing to write home about. What she has going for her most is her great looks and image - and I think that’s cool - good for her. But where great voice and musicality is concerned - she’s definitely not the winner here.

i love the original version by deseree. when i first saw that romeo and juliet movie long time ago, that song was the only thing that stood out to me. the remake doesn’t have the power behind it that make you wanna cry like desree’s version does. and on the album cover inside it says that ms. knowles wrote it, which she switched it up a bit but she should had gave desree her props. originality is key!
